I’ll do it! I’ll do my best, if you like, tho it will cause me some pain to draw ur Fury.
Assertiveness does seem to be more common trait in Bros, imo. I dunno if it is Biological reason, i.e. Testosterone or whatever, or if it is cos of cultural learning or something like that, but I would still say it is prob a True Thing, based on my extensive experience of working in fast food & hole making industries.
Did you work in Dunkin Donuts as well then?
I don’t think you can call being a hairy, ursine gigolo a ‘hole making industry’.
Piccolo not gigolo.
If she was Muslim, you’d be defending her and asking “who can say who’s right or wrong?”
So do you think that a country’s culture/law/justice system etc. becoming more ‘Islamic’ (and I do appreciate that that’s a fairly large umbrella term) would make an improvement to things then?
I don’t. Any more than I’d like to see our country become more Christian, Hindu or Buddhist. I think secularism is the way to go.
If you disagree, that’s totally fine. It is after all, a subjective question.
Don’t fancy your chances in a vote though. Secularism is pretty cool and I’m rather partial to living in a secular society. I think most people are.
It’s not about “singing the praises of Islamic culture”, it’s a recognition that we really aren’t in a position to be dishing out shit tons of judgement.
It’s interesting to watch people who say how terrible their homelands have become, turn around and lambast others for not being as good as them. The reason you are, by your own admission, such an angry young man is your and millions of other peoples inability to flourish? That appears to run counter to the claim that we are good at promoting happiness, too.
I dunno if you’ve been paying attention, but all those points you mention, with the exception of scienctific progress perhaps, we aren’t exactly great at ourselves. Interesting timing to be talking about the liberation of women, mind.
It is worth remembering, the causes right-wingers suddenly champion when they can be used as a stick to beat Muslims with, are often relatively new here. LGBT communities have suffered horrendously, and still continute to in the UK. It’s still in the living memory of many that the man creditted with knocking years off WWII & saving millions of lives was chemically castrated and driven to suicide for the crime of being gay. I don’t know a single gay, lesbian or trans person that hasn’t been on the receiving end of a good kicking, simply for being gay.
Oh, and our PM, led by her Christian faith, has voted against LGBT rights at every possible opportunity - as many in her party have too. This is pretty much the only thing I’ll give Cameron any credit for, he seemed uncharacteristically earnest in giving LGBT people the right to marry.
It’s only in my lifetime that it’s been made illegal for a man to rape his wife, and UK MEP’s (hello, all of UKIP) voted against a similar bill in the EU.
We really aren’t as far ahead of these guys as many would like to claim.
Nice piece of second guessing which also nicely side steps the point. Well done.
There are billions of people living on this planet and you have decided that most of them would like to live the same way that you do. How do you know what they think, or do you just assume that your way must be best because, well, it is what you like so it must be best?
That is how i feel about things tbh. When pap says that i.e. stargate sg-1 is better show than i.e. peter kay’s car share, i just shake my head sadly + feel bad for him. It doesn’t even occur to me that he might be Right.
Stargate SG-1 is toss. Nicked its best ideas from other places, and despite having a portal that went fucking everywhere, they ended up in British Columbia more often than not.
Before I take a stab at this, although KRG has covered most of it pretty damn well, could you define what you mean by “Western culture”? I mean, do you just mean the UK/EU, or are you including, I don’t know, Russia or Tea Party Rupublicans in the US too? I just don’t want another “this is what ‘generation’ means to me” situation where a very specific definition is being used to suit an agenda. Thanks.
First of all, thank you kindly for taking the time to write that response.
I think you raise a lot of good, legitimate points and I’ll respond in depth when I get home (just back from the gym and have to nip out for my late shift!)
However, I must point out one thing; and it is quite a crucial point.
The crux of your post is essentially “What a lot of the Muslim countries are doing is indeed wrong and backward, but there are several mitigating factors in this, and besides which, we actually aren’t in that great a position to judge” (you may have a point here). Your post tacitly concedes the ‘wrongness’ and immorality of treating gay people as second-class citizens.
Bathsaint (though I 'm sure he’s a nice chap). Didn’t actually say that though.
He said that we can’t even _ SAY _ what’s right and wrong and that to do so ‘smacks of cultural imperialism’.
Big difference.
Gd idea! Everyone post pictures that define western culture. Go!
Burn the heretic.
I think that’s a fair summary. Don’t rush to reply, and you certainly need not thank me*.
I’ve not got a huge interest in defending the barbaric actions of Authoritarian regimes, which is what I beleive we are referring too. There are practices in Muslim-majority countries that are disgusting. I ain’t for a second disputing that.
But I believe that is more to do with the rather extremist sects that hold all the power (most of these places aren’t exactly paragons of Democracy), than a systemic problem with all of Islam - particularly Muslims born and raised in Western countries. . Such practices should be called out for what they are.
Equally, I don’t think we have a huge moral high ground to be telling these places how much better we are than them, and it doesn’t escape my attention that many people who love to bash Islamic countries don’t exactly go after Russia with the same gusto. Which, is a nation with an Authoritarian regime with equally barbaric treatment of LGBT folk.
Authoritarians, whether they are Christian, Islamic, Atheist, Communist or whatever - target minorities, strip away rights and brutalise people. In my opinion, that is the pattern - not that they are Islamic.
*This sounded a bit glib when I read it back. It wasn’t meant as such.
krg & tramp was seperated at birth; one of them went to hippy commune to be raised on hemp, and the other went to Eton.
