They kinda stopped all that polygamy in early 1900s. Though some of the more fundamentalIists/cult/sects type ones did carry on.

As religion pretty much produced marriage then get rid of it and we’d be back to having several partners and picking the best one to make strong babies and hooking up with the ones that can protect. Is it such a backward concept. It’s how we became to be.
Interesting to see on International Women’s day that polyandry (women with multiple husbands) is outlawed nearly everywhere. But polygyny (men with multiple wives) is OK in 50 counties. This is why we need these days to show the inequality.

I’m not being Mysognist bout it srs. I thought polygamy was a unisex word. If i get my harem of 6 or 7 wives, I am ok if those 6 or 7 wives each also have 6 or 7 husbands, especially if they let me watch. It would cause bit of scheduling difficulty i spose, but our Christmas party would be fkn epic. We’d have to hire a marquee.

Anyway, this thread is about social integration, not what cultural practices you agree and don’t agree with. This couple clearly failed to follow the local customs (i.e. integrate) and are, therefore, guilty of being at fault for being unable to socially integrate.

This has been going on in the UAE since the country was formed in 1971.
Almost all expats know this rule and there are ways around it. Depending on when they last left the country for a visa run is tell them she got pregnant outside of the UAE.
exactly! This couple were expecting the country to change to suit them rather than them changing to fit into the country. They probably fell into the trap of thinking their culture is better than that of their hosts. If you want to move somewhere then you should make the effort to integrate. I wonder whether either learnt the language, the article doesn’t say. I’d be surprised, you know what these sort of people are like.

If they can’t figure out the rules in the country they’ve gone to live in and abide by those rules, they must be a bit backward really. No other word for it I’m afraid.

What is your actual argument here? Are you seriously telling me that things become morally ‘good’ or ‘bad’ dependent on which part of the world the actions take place in?
Crank it up a notch; if we have no right to say what’s right or wrong then on what philosophical basis can you condemn ISIS throwing gays off rooftops given that they’re part of a different culture to you?

I think you might be pooling all of the Islamic faith into one there and saying it’s all about that and forgetting western culture doesn’t do some of the above things too. We often see reports that our children aren’t that happy in the UK so I don’t think we can say we sorted it all.
I was reminded yesterday of Fatima Al-Fihri a Muslim woman who is credited with founding a university in Fes in 859.

Yesterday a Christian woman was saying that women aren’t born to lead, that men do that better. On International Women’s day ffs. You can imagine my reaction (head in hands at my desk) as this is an educated woman. So that’s a Christian female not promoting equality and parity. Apparently women get distracted. Her views on transgender was also worrying given where she works.
Waiting for some to say she is correct…
