I’m with you on the main thrust of your post, and I need to say that I haven’t seen any of the game, but on selection, I can see both sides.
I feel that if we’d lost to Leicester whilst conceding 4 with a fit Cedric and Lemina on the bench, Barry and New Yorkie Saint would have lost their shit in an even more knee-jerkingly embarrassing way. I might even have lost it a bit myself.
I mean, when I saw this I thought, yep, that’s a good enough side to compete against Leicester…
…when the side proved to me that it wasn’t good enough, I blamed the players and not the coach or his selection.
As for formation, we’ve discussed this down the pub and I can’t help but agree that any 3 of our CBs and 2 excellent CMs would make us a formidable team to break down and give us the ability to give Boufal/Tadic/Redmond a defence-worrying free role. It is a no-brainer and when we’ve played it we look solid.
But a) it’s not the Southampton way and b) playing 3 at the back has a deflating effect on Les Reed’s ego’s erection.
