🇷🇺 Russia

Once you’ve seen the obvious one in the foreground, it’s quite fun to concentrate on the rest and see how many more twitchers you can spot. :+1::+1::smile:

First Covid, then Putin, now zombies :lou_sad:

What news company is this? Pro Kremlin I’d suspect.

Should this go in here or in the Ukraine war/invasion thread? I’ll go for here.

With cold weather expected today in Ukrain how will the Russian invaders keep themselves warm with no fuel?
Putin is combining into Napoleon now as well as Hitler, the other thing they have in common is they’re short.

I’ve been thinking about what I said here because I found it quite difficult to concoct this argument. Basically I think there is truth to Barry’s argument. There are some particularly intolerant laws in Russia and I am against the UK following suit in that respect. However, the more I think about the counter argument I made, I don’t think I am really wrong either and that’s really sad.

In theory we probably do have a limited amount of extra freedom in the west to protest and when that limit is exceeded there is probably some degree of additional tolerance, but apart from some outliers at the edge of society who are willing to risk being subjected to the more tolerant consequences, for the sake of making limited to no real impact, who is actually willing and able to exercise that extra freedom?

Where is the huge benefit to feel smug about of having a right to protest if no one listens to you?

If you’re not willing to test the limits of your freedom what difference does it really make if the consequences of exceeding the limits are mild or extreme?

I’ve often wondered how many protestors would have been required in order to force Blair to change course on the Iraq invasion. Estimates vary between 1 and 2 million in London, if that had been 5 million would they have had to take notice? 10? 20? Or would any number have been insufficient for a policy change?

It depends upon who they think those protesters vote for

If 2 million die hard Labour supporters protest against a Tory government then the govt is unlikely to give a fuck. However if 2 million Tory voters get on the warpath then a Tory govt starts to sit up and pay attention - you could argue that Brexit is a good example of the govt being pushed to do something it didn’t really want to do

I think you’re missing the point, some protests do work but they take time and momentum, its the actual right to protest, Greenham Common worked.

Greenham common falls under the category of limited to no impact I’m afraid.

Greenham Common was immensely successful in highlighting the issues, we digress though, its the right to protest and the freedom to object, Russia is a trapped nation and the people are subjugated, indoctrinated and aren’t free at all.

The Poll Tax demos worked

I think I paid about £20 of my poll tax - I was in the Eastleigh borough so the tickets charged £400, but they sent me a standing order mandate for £1.80ish a month which I gladly paid, much to their fury
