Robert E Lee - Should The Statue Have Stayed?

After careful consideration, I have changed my mind about replying to this post.

I think it is unreasonable to believe that Trump is aware of anything that resembles historical context.

De facto segregation is still going on now.

That Statue is a war memorial to the dead. It this case what is the objection, that we are commerating men who fought and died on the losing side or the word confederate.

Governor Terry McAuliffe seems to be taking a sensible approach(explains why it was nothing to do with Obama as well).

“The discussion regarding whether to relocate Confederate statues is an important and legitimate conversation that should take place in each community that contains one. Monuments should serve as unifiers, to inspire us collectively and to venerate our greatest citizens.

Unfortunately, the recent events in Charlottesville demonstrate that monuments celebrating the leadership of the Confederacy have become flashpoints for hatred, division and violence. “As we attempt to heal and learn from the tragic events in Charlottesville, I encourage Virginia’s localities and the General Assembly – which are vested with the legal authority – to take down these monuments and relocate them to museums or more appropriate settings.

I hope we can all now agree that these symbols are a barrier to progress, inclusion and equality in Virginia and, while the decision may not be mine to make, I believe the path forward is clear.”

As do the local mayors.

This is a provocative piece from Tony Greenstein on the recent troubles with the far right in America and the Israeli response.

As I said Charlottesville present the Zionists with a real dilemma. It took Netanyahu three days before he could say anything about the neo-Nazi murder of an anti-fascist at Charlottesville. In the Times of Israel of 15.8.17. in an article headed **‘3 days later, Israeli leaders still conspicuously silent on Charlottesville’ **Raphael Ahrens wrote that:

three days after neo-Nazis marched in broad daylight through the streets waving swastika flags and chanting “Jews will not replace us,” the leader of the Jewish state had still not publicly commented on the matter as of Tuesday.

Netanyahu’s silence in the face of images that send chills down the spines of Jews worldwide has raised eyebrows among analysts and experts.

Similarly, an article For Israel, White House Ties Trump Neo-Nazi Condemnation for NDTV reports on how ‘An Israeli cabinet minister has said relations with US President Donald Trump take priority over condemning neo-Nazis, to justify Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s muted response to events in Charlottesville.’

I agree with all the liberal babies concerning this about a rallying point for the far right I really do but what do we do and where do we stop and how much can a liberal agenda be allowed to rewrite history?

Mount Rushmore

Washington Obelisk

Where does it stop?

Have these same people asked for apologies of everyone involved in the slave trade or is this selective based upon colour?

To me it indicates that this whole issue needs to be looked at more holistically. There is more at stake here than Statutes, and as was seen in Boston where “more moderate/wiser” alt-r tried to exercise “freedom of speech”. Crush Nazis of course, but then where does it stop?

The cynic in me still sees this as “look over here and shout about this” while we should be looking the other way.

Pandora’s box springs to mind. I hope the wiser heads such as the previous post about a proper policy rather than a sound bite response take the lead here.

Looking at some of the quotes in that Greenstein blog, it’s difficult not to be a cynic. You’ve got Netanyahu’s own nipper downplaying the neo Nazis and bigging up this recently invented “Alt Left” threat.

But, alas, another Netanyahu came out on this. Netanyahu Jr., that is – Yair Netanyahu. Writingon his Facebook yesterday:

“To put things in perspective. I’m a Jew, I’m an Israeli, the neo nazis scums in Virginia hate me and my country. But they belong to the past. Their breed is dying out. However the thugs of Antifa and BLM who hate my country (and America too in my view) just as much are getting stronger and stronger and becoming super dominant in American universities and public life.”

There’s no such thing as Alt-Left.

It’s used by centrists to equate people that want universal healthcare with Neo-Nazi’s, and Neo-Nazi’s that need an equivalent ‘across the aisle’.

Again, the Alt-Right is a label they gave themselves, because they don’t want to be called Nazi’s. The Alt-Left is not a thing.

Totally not been able to find it but the thing that worries me about this “Deflection of Attention” was an article which kind of compared the way Marx described “The Workers” and “How to exploit them” and the way that Bannon (and Trump) with the (non extremist) alt - r mindset were re-writing that.

One of my (very wise) American FB pals had posted it ages back. But the point was something like dumb down the proles, misinform them and you can epxloit them on minimum wages and the like. It was VERY scary but it also needed an “Atmosphere” or “Fear” to be induced so that these bat shit crazy stuff could be rolled out.

What I do remember was that the article was not some crazy Conspiracy Nut but some paper from an Ivy League project.

#biggerpicture worries me more than the statues

This is a link to one of the articles the Greenstein blog references, quoting the minister.

Equally worrying and astonishing. The Labour Party went through months of turmoil over social media reposts by Naz Shah and comments from Ken Livingstone that everyone was disgusted with, but no-one bothered to quote. The UK’s left was accused of being a breeding ground for anti-semites.

The US has rallies and demonstrations where actual anti-semites, openly shouting their views en-masse, and because Trump has been treating the Netanyahu administration favourably, Israel is prepared to go light on condemnation.

This is how dictatorships develop, not with Chamberlain style appeasement, but with willing partners wilfully looking the other way.

Critics have accused PM Netanyahu of being slow to condemn extremism and anti-Semitism at US far-right protests, having only done so in a single tweet- three days after the rally in the Virginia town that ended in bloodshed.

Mr Ayoob Kara, the communications minister and a vocal Netanyahu supporter, said in remarks published Friday in the Jerusalem Post that backing President Trump was a strategic must for Israel’s right-wing government.

“Due to the terrific relations with the US, we need to put the declarations about the Nazis in the proper proportion,” Mr Kara told the English-language newspaper.

“We need to condemn anti-Semitism and any trace of Nazism, and I will do what I can as a minister to stop its spread. But Trump is the best US leader Israel has ever had,” he said.

“His relations with the prime minister of Israel are wonderful, and after enduring the terrible years of (Barack) Obama, Trump is the unquestioned leader of the free world, and we must not accept anyone harming him,” he added.

Thx Pap. Can’t access much of that stuff here unless in mainstream press

I wonder what our liberal friends make of this?

Like everything else in human affairs it will never really stop. But, as of now, it does not appear to be selective based upon color (or colour).

I make of it that the current prime minister of Israel is a right wing authoritarian with no interest in making peace if it involves any compromise with the arabs. Ultimately, the jews in Israel will have to become more and more brutal to hold onto power and I don’t see it ending well.

But at least there are no statues of Robert E. Lee there so that’s good.

As a Side point, I just realized that I can see who up or down votes me. Not bad to figure it out after only a couple of years.

I never vote anyone down, what is the point? The “can I speak to you manager types” on here love it, they’re supposed to be the laid back sort and I am the right winger, they do make me laugh.

What wereTed Bates’ views on race?

Alt left no, I was sneered at by using extreme left on this site and saints web, the extreme left have sweats existed but always been perceived as the weakling underdog, these aren’t and they’re worse than the fascist Islamic terror groups we see now bombing and maiming. Liberal concession has led us here.
