Red-and-White Stripes vs. Black-and-White Stripes

Did you really?

How about this bit concerning Puel?

“Hindsight suggests that the last guy might just have been overachieving.”

Overacheiving by playing anti football, the fans aren’t over expentant they just want to be told realistic goals and expectations and not be treated as inbred hicks.

I think the calls to drop Redmond are deserved. I’ve not arrived at that opinion lightly or after a couple of games. Going back to last season he was infuriating. His ‘assist’ for Gabbiadini was not even the creation of a chance as the player still had so much to do and about 25 seconds went by before the ball was in the net.

If it was justified to drop Gabbiadini or Hoedt then surely it is also for dropping Redmond. It wasn’t as if Gabby was missing chances, he simply wasn’t getting any service. The runs were there but nobody was picking him out.

For me the problem with Redmond and to a certain extent Tadic, is just how predictable they have become. 99% of the time Redmond does the same thing and rarely takes a full back on the outside. Perhaps this is partly because he is a right footed player playing on the left but even so, he is a well paid professional that should be able to use his left foot. As a team we don’t get to the byline enough in my opinion.

That is why it must be worth giving Boufal a few games in the side. I am pretty sure he has no clue what he doing so there is little chance that defenders will know what he’s gunna do either. He is so unpredictable and right now I think we need that. Equally, he is the last player to score for us from outside the 18 yard box. When you are playing against deep sitting teams you need the option of somebody shooting from distance. Redmond, Tadic and Davis certainly can’t or at least won’t.

The over coached argument is an interesting one. I say that because remembering back to the game at Anfield in the cup run last year, Redmond was skinning defenders and taking them on on the outside, getting to the byline and cutting the ball back to create chances. So he clearly has it about him to do that more often, but for some reason he doesn’t. That is why I find him so frustrating and have fallen out of love with the guy.

It may well be that after a few games we are calling for Boufal to get the fuck out of the team but at the moment I know exactly what we are going to get from Redmond and at the moment it isn’t great.

Just to add some balance and not just slate Redmond… I thought Romeu was poor yesterday. He looked very slow on the ball and stunted our attacking impetus at times by taking too long on the ball or playing the safe pass too often.

Bertrand didn’t get forward anywhere near as much as Cedric did. I found that a little strange because when he did get forward with his overlapping runs we look dangerous. He also probably has the best delivery in the side. Apart from his corners straight to the goalkeeper of course (a massive pet peeve of mine).

Lemina looks like a very good player and will likely be the next one who the media choose to speculate over.

VVD still looks rusty but his diagonals are useful in switching up play and getting us up the pitch.

Forster has his own thread after yesterday so that probably says enough about his performance. After saving a penalty the week before I would have hoped he’d be a bit more confident. Clearly what confidence he got from that was very fragile and was gone completely by the time his kick was closed down by Perez.

All in all there are a few causes for optimism, albeit not many. Another very winnable game has passed us by. That is dropped points at home to Swansea, Watford and Newcastle now.

I do wonder if we should be attempting to introduce the 3-5-2 sooner rather than later. We certainly have the players for it. It seems to me that our best attacking wide players are our fullbacks so that may solve the lack of creativity and width that Redmond and Tadic offer and the goalscoring difficulties we have been experiencing over the last few months and would allow us to get two goalscorers in to the box more frequently. If we aren’t creating many clear cut chances then we need to ensure as much as possible that Gabby and Austin are the ones on the end of them more often than not.

That’s all well and good but do I have to start the next match thread?

Good post Ss.

I didn’t mention vvd yesterday but he looked to be going through the motions to me.

I am amazed that mp hasn’t gone to 352. It looks obvious to me and a Fuck ton of others on Twitter etc.

Yes, yes and yes

Now stop bleating like a new born lamb being chased by a Welsh farmer and start the damn thing, only 5 days left…

Redmond got me 6 points on the fantasy footy so he’s alright by me. For now.

Didn’t think this story deserved its own thread but I like to think we were the straw that broke the camels back yesterday…

I completely forgot to mention this previously, but for me the biggest disappointment yesterday was Bletch’s shirt. A White Stuff number in plain (and non-garish) purple, with a restrained off-white check. In fairness, he did wear it under an anorak, as Rallyboy spotted from his perch in the Northam, but it was still a major let-down. We know he can do better than this, and he really needs to pull the stops out for the next match he attends.

Suddenly dawned on me during yesterday’s game…we look like a team that’s playing a system they don’t believe in.

As GB says above VVD looks like he’s going through the motions…but actually they all do. That team is not playing with belief and hasn’t done since the season started.

It’s not a good look and we could be in a spot of bother here.

This guy has his finger on the pulse. A very good report

Is Bletch turning out for WBA then (courtesy of a ticket offer from me)? I hope he pulls out the stops for the tea-time / afternoon on beers friendly KO time.

Of course you do and get it up quick as I have things to say :lou_lol:

Agreed. But it is a sorry state of affairs when TSW is quoted as a source of info on Saints matters. If the guy had done his homework he would know that manager (insert name here) out threads appear with boring monotony whenever we dont play like Barcelona.

Although he does call Pied a centre back which makes the decision to put him on for JWP seem terrible.

Yep, I stopped reading after that. How can I take anyone seriously who can’t even get player positions right? The rest may well be good, but it’s either lazy or stupid to not do your basic research.

Hmm, from the article

And, although football forums are hardly the most rational corners of the internet, it was rather telling that a threat entitled ‘PELLEGRINO OUT’ sprung up on one popular Southampton site in the hours ahead of the Newcastle match, attracting over 100 responses almost immediately.

I don’t remember a thread entitled thaton here!!

You may have missed the word “popular”
