THE VERDICT: A missed chance to prove a big point for Saints

Show/hide article…

THIS was a chance to prove a point to the St Mary’s faithful.

But it ended being a familiar tale of missed chances, flashes of good play and a reminder of where Saints would be without Manolo Gabbiadini.

One of the most telling statistics to hone in on after Saints’ goalless draw against neighbours AFC Bournemouth is one relating to their form in front of goal at St Mary’s this term in the Premier League.

Middlesbrough are the only team to score fewer goals (12) at home than Saints (14).

Charlie Austin remains the top-scorer at home in the league with four goals, despite being absent for nearly three months.

But there was hope that after eight weeks away from St Mary’s, in which Saints had scored 11 goals in just four games, they would return to the south coast ready to show off their new-found bang in front of goal – especially when faced with the third worst defence in the league in the Cherries.

There had been evidence during this recent run of games that Saints had turned a corner this season now.

They were exciting going forward – if not slightly shaky at the back – in the reinstated 4-2-3-1 formation and they’d bought a superb goal-scorer in Gabbiadini.

There was a sneak preview in their last home game prior to the Cherries draw, the disappointing 3-1 defeat to West Ham at the start of February, that Gabbiadini was the missing link between success and failure in Saints’ topsy-turvy season.

He scored a cracking goal to open the scoring that day, before the Hammers came back to win.

In their absence from St Mary’s, Gabbiadini proved that he was a player who added that killer touch.

With the 25-year-old leading the charge, Saints recorded back-to-back league away triumphs – in both of which they scored four goals.

It seemed things were gaining some thrust.

Defeats were also in the mix in the EFL Cup final to Manchester United and Tottenham, but Claude Puel’s men were showing good signs, with their new £14.6m striker netting six goals.

Saints then finally headed home on Saturday eager to show the home faithful that they were ready to build momentum in the run-in until the end of the season.

With six home games left to pack in until the end of May, Saints’ season will be defined by their form at St Mary’s, so it was a chance to kick that off in style.

Last term’s sixth placed finished was very much built on the form at St Mary’s, with Saints recording 11 wins and scoring the second most in the division at home (47) along the way.

Only champions Leicester, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City won more on home turf last term in the top-flight.

So the Cherries game was a chance to push on.

Except, with Gabbiadini out with a groin problem, the same old problems that cursed Saints earlier in the campaign reared their ugly heads once more.

There were the familiar sights.

Head in hands as the ball whistled narrowly wide. Tick.

Jay Rodriguez looked sharp and energetic upfront, but was often caught offside.

The five-goal striker, who came into the side in Gabbiadni’s absence to make his first start in eight weeks, powered a tasty shot on the volley at Artur Boruc’s goal in the first-half, which was saved well by the former Saints shot stopper.

The 27-year-old even had the ball in the net, but was flagged for offside after he’d been played in by Ryan Bertrand on the left.

There were also glimmers from new England cap Nathan Redmond, who produced an array of exciting runs and shots.

Dusan Tadic was also in on the act, clipping the outside of the left post from 15 yards after being played in by Cedric Soares.

Maya Yoshida also flicked a header just wide of the far post from a corner just before half time.

Yet Saints were ultimately frustrated in front of goal.

Second half substitute Shane Long also added his own near miss.

The Republic of Ireland international was industrious and a nuisance, as usual, but couldn’t find the finishing touch when he was slotted through on the right by Tadic, dinking an effort narrowly wide of the left post.

The influence of Gabbiadini will be telling in the long run, but it was unfortunate in many ways that on their return to St Mary’s they couldn’t show that they’d solved this problem of creating but not scoring.

As it was, Saints will feel lucky to even come away with a point from the Cherries match.

Captain Steven Davis had to make a goal-line clearance on 33 minutes from a Bournemouth corner as ex-Saints man Andrew Surman tried to poke home.

The Cherries then came out after the break with more desire and drive than their south coast neighbours.

Benik Afobe will be having nightmares over his miss just past the hour mark, when he was played in by Josh King in acres of space in the box, only to fire wide of the post.

Ten minutes after that Cherries came knocking again, going closer as Adam Smith hit the post square on with a low drive from the edge of the box.

Cherries’ best chance came after Ryan Bertrand was adjudged to have fouled Ryan Fraser in the box.

Harry Arter admitted that he was already celebrating in his head when stepped up to fire the resulting penalty kick well over Fraser Forster’s goal on 78 minutes.

In all Bournemouth were likely the worthy winners after their second-half showing, but Saints somehow managed to claim a point.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace: Premier League preview

Show/hide article…

Crystal Palace travel to Southampton on Wednesday night aiming to build on their shock victory at Chelsea.

Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha were both on target at Stamford Bridge and Sam Allardyce will be hopeful his key players can replicate such impressive performances on the South Coast.

The Eagles are currently four points clear of the relegation zone but cannot consider themselves safe with a difficult run-in on the horizon.

However, Claude Puel’s side have won just two of their last eight top-flight fixtures and the south Londoners will be confident they can make it five wins on the bounce to boost their survival hopes even further.

Southampton host Crystal Palace at St. Mary’s Stadium with kick-off scheduled for 7.45pm on Wednesday, April 5.

The match will be not be televised live on TV in the UK. Alternatively, you can follow all the build-up and action from 6.45pm with Standard Sport’s London Football live blog.

Allardyce is unlikely to make too many changes, having seen his players deliver so emphatically against the league leaders.

The Eagles’ defence has conceded just one goal in five games but a reshuffle is on the cards due to injuries to Scott Dann (knee) and James Tomkins (calf).

Patrick van Aanholt and Mathieu Flamini are rated as doubtful while James McArthur could recover from a back spasm problem.

Southampton are also facing a selection headache in defence with Virgil van Dijk sidelined with an ankle problem.

Manolo Gabbiadini is suffering with a groin strain and is unlikely to recover in time to face the Eagles.

Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez will deputise up front as the Saints go in search of a first win on home turf since late January.

Sane’s settled and Lucas proves Liverpool worth - 10 THINGS WE LEARNED

Show/hide article…

The Premier League returned with a bang following the international break, bringing with it top four battles and a shock defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Crystal Palace’s toppling of Chelsea caused shockwaves while Arsenal stopped the losing streak and Liverpool painted Merseyside a deep shade of red.

Sportsmail’s Ralph Ellis has studied the facts and stats from the weekend’s action, across the Premier League and the English divisions, and brought you 10 things we learned…

  1. Leroy Sane took his time to settle into the Premier League but the 21-year-old is now unquestionably the Manchester City player to make the most progress in Pep Guardiola’s first campaign.

The blistering pace he showed to outrun Hector Bellerin for City’s first goal at Arsenal showed why he cost £37m from German club Schalke 04.

It was his seventh goal in 14 appearances in all competitions since Guardiola put him into the starting line-up against Spurs on January 21st, coming at a rate of one every 164 minutes.

  1. When Lucas Leiva started against Wolves in the FA Cup at the end of January it was billed as his Anfield farewell after nearly 10 years at the club.

But stories of his departure proved unfounded and that has turned out a blessing for Jurgen Klopp because the 30-year-old still clearly has a huge value.

After starting at Hull once the window was shut he’s been involved in every Liverpool game since and was superb against Everton, making most passes (68) and winning seven of a remarkable nine tackles, the most made by any Premier League player this weekend.

  1. Big decision by Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to leave England full back Kyle Walker on the bench at Burnley and start Kieran Trippier instead.

The Spurs chief was presumably worried about fatigue as Walker had played all 90 minutes of both England’s internationals against Germany and Lithuania.

Even so it was a big call – it was only the second time Walker has not started a league game for Tottenham since March 2016.

  1. Managers need to have complete confidence in their decisions and Paul Clement certainly backed his own team selection in Swansea’s 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough.

Despite the desperate need for three points to open some space above the relegation zone he chose not to use a single substitute, believing his original line-up would find a goal if he showed patience in them.

It was the first time in 220 Premier League matches since Swansea won promotion to the top flight in 2011 that any of the seven bosses who have been in charge have not used a single sub.

  1. Hal Robson-Kanu hasn’t had the easiest of times since signing for West Brom and immediately hearing from boss Tony Pulis that he wasn’t the “big name” that his new manager had really wanted.

The Welsh international’s job since has been mainly to run the clock down, making 21 appearances as a sub with only six of them for longer than 10 minutes.

But it hasn’t changed his attitude and on a rare start he worked his socks off in the 0-0 draw at Manchester United, fighting 23 duels up front on his own – the most by any Premier League striker this weekend.

  1. Opta produced some stats last week showing that on average British players run further in every game than their foreign team mates.

Clearly nobody has told Crystal Palace’s Serbian midfielder Luka Milivojevic. He ran 7.8 miles to help secure the shock 2-1 win at Chelsea, the furthest of any player in the Premier League this weekend.

Next best was the 7.6 miles covered by Cesc Fabregas, presumably trying to keep up with him.

  1. Few young players this season have taken an unexpected chance better than Southampton’s Jack Stephens who found himself propelled into the first team when Virgil van Dijk got injured at the same time as Jose Fonte was sold to West Ham.

The 23-year-old defender had a shaky start with two defeats in his first two Premier League starts but is now beginning to look the part and made a big contribution to the clean sheet at home to Bournemouth.

The 33-year-old got his 19th Championship goal of the season in the 1-0 win over relegation haunted Blackburn to give the Seagulls a nine-point margin over third place.

Brighton haven’t had a 20 goals a season striker since Murray left for Crystal Palace in 2011 after scoring 22 in the League One promotion campaign.

  1. Phil Brown appears to be the manager who has finally found a way to tame the wild child that is Nile Ranger and his reward could be a second promotion with Southend.

The former Newcastle striker, now 25, got his fifth goal in six games in the 3-0 win over Oldham that kept the Shrimpers in the League One play-off places.

  1. League Two clubs will miss the financial boost they get from Portsmouth’ s travelling fans if Paul Cook’s side cling on to their automatic promotion place.

Despite a round trip of nearly 700 miles that meant 12 hours on the road Pompey sold out their entire allocation of 1,000 tickets at Hartlepool, and many more fans snuck into other parts of the ground for the biggest crowd seen at Victoria Park this season.

It was worth the journey to see a 2-0 away win that opened up a six point gap to Stevenage in fourth place.

Loan Watch: Big win for Gazzaniga

Show/hide article…

The 25-year-old played the full game, as Rayo produced a surprise result against their second-placed opponents that lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Gazzaniga was beaten by defender Alcalá in the 41st minute, but, by then, the visitors were already 2-0 up, thanks to efforts from Santi Comesaña and Roberto Trashorras.

Their two-goal advantage was restored on the hour mark, thanks to Javi Guerra, before Gazzaniga made a number of important saves to keep the lead intact.

There was no such joy for striker Sam Gallagher, who was unable to help Blackburn Rovers from falling to a narrow defeat at Championship promotion chasers Brighton.

Glenn Murray’s goal midway through the second half separated the sides, and, although Gallagher was thrown on shortly after, there was no way through for the visitors, who are 22nd ahead of their trip to Reading tomorrow night.

There was also defeat for defender Jason McCarthy, who played the full match as Walsall were beaten 1-0 at promotion contenders Bradford, with Billy Clarke’s 58th-minute goal deciding matters.

The Saddlers are now 13th in the table, ahead of their final six games of the campaign.

Additionally, congratulations go to former Southampton defender Jordan Turnbull, who was a regular in our Loan Watch columns before joining Coventry City on a permanent basis earlier this season, as he helped the Sky Blues to a 2-1 victory over Oxford United in the final of the Checkatrade Trophy, at Wembley Stadium.

Turnbull played the entire game, as Gael Bigirimana and George Thomas got the crucial goals for Coventry.
