RESULTS: Dermot Gallagher analyses your top five rule changes in football

Former top-flight official Dermot Gallagher offers his expert opinion on the rule changes you suggested during Sky Sports’ Support the Ref week.

Are offsides an unnecessary nuisance? Should players really be booked for taking their shirt off? And who exactly should be allowed to complain to the referee?

As part of our Support the Ref campaign last month, we wanted to hear from you about the future of refereeing and rules in football.

We then collated 13 of your ideas - which varied from sin bins to diving bans - and put them to a vote.

Here, we reveal the top five rule changes you would most like to see, with Gallagher determining whether they could realistically be implemented…

Scroll down to see how all 13 rule changes fared in the vote

Suggestion: Players can be banned for diving in the aftermath of a game

Dermot says: This is something I’m really in favour of because I don’t like seeing it in football. In my opinion, three people should meet every Monday and if they decide 3-0 in favour that someone has dived, then that player should get a two-match ban. If it comes up a second time it should be a four-match ban and a third time should be a 10-match ban.

People would say 10 matches is outrageous, but if a guy has already missed six matches, then he’s not listening. I don’t think it would get that far, I think the first ban would sort it out.

Suggestion: Only the captain can speak to the referee to contest a decision

Dermot says: We’ve gone a long way towards that already, in the sense that the captain is spoken to by the referee when they come in with the teamsheets. So that starts the communication process.

If there’s a big decision captains liaise with the referee and transfer information across.

When a player is yellow carded we see the captain called over and they are given a public rebuke in front of the captain. The ref uses him as a way of diffusing the situation.

Suggestion: No more bookings for a player taking his shirt off or going into the crowd while celebrating

Dermot says: It is what it is. It’s what we’re stuck with whether we like it or not. I remember that it was always difficult when they were already on a yellow card and did that. I remember Chris Foy sent off Arjen Robben against Sunderland - you become the evil pantomime figure.

This rule is a mandatory rule. This is not subjective, there is no leeway.

Suggestion: The referee wears a microphone or body camera so discussions with players are recorded and made public

Dermot says: What the referee and the player communicate on the pitch should stay on the pitch. I think it’s a workplace where a referee is dealing with discipline or a decision he has made. I think that should stay private.

Suggestion: Managers have three chances per game to send a decision to a video referral

Dermot says: Definitely no. I think it would be used as a tactic. You would just take chances to break up the play. If a penalty is given towards the end of the day, even if you think it is a penalty, you would challenge it just so that it delays the player taking it.

Six clubs Luke Shaw could join if Manchester United axe him in the summer

Show/hide article…

He was once the most expensive teenager in football, now Luke Shaw looks set to depart Manchester United with a whimper.

Shaw failed to make the squad for this weekend’s goalless draw with West Brom before boss Jose Mourinho made a damning assessment of the defender.

United chief Mourinho accused him of being ā€œa long way behindā€ other players in the squad in a fight for a place on the bench and ā€œcannot compare the way he trains and commits, the focus, the ambitionā€.

The England man’s last appearance in a Red shirt came at the beginning of March when he was handed a surprise start against Bournemouth.

But despite earning a seven minute cameo for the Three Lions against Germany last week - his seventh international cap - Shaw has only managed 15 outings for the Red Devils this season.

The left-back will now be hankering for a quick summer move to free himself from Mourinho, although the Portuguese may yet do a dramatic U-turn and put his faith in Shaw, but if he does not, where could the young defender end up?

Here are six possible destinations for the 21-year-old…

A return to where he played his best football could be the best remedy to save Shaw’s career.

Shaw joined the Saints’ academy aged eight before progressing through the age groups to become yet another player bred for stardom on the South Coast - following Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin et al.

He played 67 times for Southampton around and returning to somewhere he was loved could be the way to bring his form back.

The worry for Shaw is his departure has laid the trail for Matt Targett and Sam McQueen who are highly-rated home growns - and even if he can top them he will still have to fight off Ryan Bertrand.

Eddie Howe has reinvigorated Jack Wilshere’s dwindling career and solved his injury jinx, why couldn’t he do that to Shaw?

There are huge similarities between Wilshere and Shaw. Both slung into international football early, both have suffered their fair share of injuries and both have found game time at their top four clubs tough to nail down.

Howe has a way of getting the best of out players who want his help and his methods could be perfect for Shaw.

Again it is back to a slice of the country where Shaw knows like the back of his hand as well which is only another bonus.

Going out the limelight like Wilshere could be great idea but at his part of his lifespan as a professional footballer he might want more than relegation worries.

United will want to recoup all of the £30m they spent to sign Shaw from Saints in June 2014.

The most likely place to get that money back at the moment is the money bags in the Chinese Premier League.

A player with the stature and youthfulness as Shaw could be exactly what the young league needs to grow its brand and prove they are looking for the future.

But would party fan Shaw want to move to the isolated communist state? Probably not.

Shaw rejected the Blues to join United two and a half years ago. They were keen on him then and would definitely look again.

A wing-back role might be great for Shaw, more in line with the attacking impetus he was so good at when with Saints.

Antonio Conte’s men are waltzing towards the title so bringing in a risk like Shaw would seem strange, but the left flank could do with being beefed up with not a lot behind Marcos Alonso.

Shaw might have played his best football for Saints, but it was almost exclusively down to Mauricio Pochettino how well he did.

The exciting forward thinking brand of football by the Argentine got the best out of Shaw and made him worth more than nearly every other teen in history, except teammate Anthony Martial.

Danny Rose is arguably the best full-back in the Premier League, so he might have to get used to sitting on the bench at Wembley if he was to move to Spurs for next season.

James Milner has been shoehorned into Klopp’s team for too long, and Shaw is the antidote.

All the stars align to make this is a great move for all parties, with Shaw likely getting the Champions League football he craves.

But would Mourinho sell one of his assets to a neighbour and massive rival? He has previous when he let Juan Mata go to Old Trafford when Chelsea boss.

Power Rankings: Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez & Wilfried Ndidi in top 10

Show/hide article…

Leicester City dominate the Power Rankings top 10 just six weeks after sacking Claudio Ranieri - but Crystal Palace 'keeper Wayne Hennessey tops the chart this week.

The Wales stopper made 10 saves during the Eagles’ heroic 2-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday, having kept three successive clean sheets before the weekend.

Team-mate Wilfried Zaha (No 7, up 24 places) levelled the scores at Stamford Bridge before Christian Benteke (No 14, up 74 places) sealed three points for Sam Allardyce’s men.

Three Leicester players made the top 10 for the first time this season, with Wilfried Ndidi landing the No 2 spot after his stunning long-range opener during the Foxes’ 2-0 over Stoke.

Jamie Vardy (No 4, up five places) scored his fourth league goal in as many games with another wonder strike from a Danny Simpson (No 11, up 83 places) cross, while Riyad Mahrez (No 5, down two places) was also among the top performers this week.

Liverpool winger Sadio Mane (No 10, up one place) opened the scoring during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Merseyside rivals Everton on Saturday but suffered a knee injury on the hour mark.

Philippe Coutinho (No 8, up 35 places) regained the Reds’ lead after Matthew Pennington had equalised for the Toffees on his debut before Mane’s replacement Divock Origi struck a third to ensure victory.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance by awarding points to players for 32 different matchday stats.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.

The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every Tuesday during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…

Romeu: Another big game

Show/hide article…

Saints head into the next round of fixtures in tenth position in the Premier League, but the six teams below them are each within three points.

The last of those is Palace, who are up to 16th in the table after winning four in a row, including Saturday’s shock 2-1 victory at leaders Chelsea.

"It’s another big game,ā€ said Romeu. "Now we are very tight in the table and winning or losing makes a big difference.

"We just want to get points and create a gap between ourselves and the teams underneath in the lower part of the table. To get that we need to win games.ā€

Reflecting on Saturday’s 0-0 home draw with Bournemouth, the midfielder told reporters: "I think the only thing that we could a little bit regret was going in to half time with the score 0-0.

"I think we had many chances in the first half, we played good football but in the second, they had more. They played more aggressive, created more chances and we can be happy with a draw.

"I wouldn’t say it was bad game from us. I think the team played well and I think the first half was good. We had some good chances – the only thing we didn’t put the ball in the back of the net.

ā€œBeing honest we should go one or two ahead in the first half and thought would have given us much more space in the second half. That didn’t happen so we had to change the game in the second half.ā€

First, France v Spain saw video technology reverse two decisions, which helped the latter win 2-0, ignite a debate about its further use.

And at the weekend, Stoke City star Marko Arnautovic had a goal ruled out when officials, despite appearing to be onside, deemed him offside.

Where do the Premier League teams rank in No of headed goals scored?

Show/hide article…

Arsenal certainly haven’t been head and shoulders above everyone in the Premier League this season, but at least in one statistic they have something to jump about for.

The Gunners earned a 2-2 draw at home to top-four rivals Manchester City on Sunday courtesy of Shkodran Mustafi’s second-half header.

That goal was Arsenal’s 14th of the season from a header - a league-leading figure with West Brom.

Arsenal’s headed tally is perhaps a surprising one with Arsene Wenger’s side renowned for their intricate play on the ground rather than crosses into the box.

However, 24 per cent of their 58 league goals have come from headers - indicating a change in approach from the north London outfit.

Wenger’s side has also been criticised for their inability to defend aerial threats on goal too - and that sharply came into focus during last month’s 3-1 defeat at West Brom.

The Baggies’ win at the Hawthorns that day saw two headed goals scored by defender Craig Dawson - with the manner of his latter one seeing Arsenal’s zonal marking lambasted by many.

With Tony Pulis’ side earning a 0-0 draw at Manchester United on Saturday, they are yet to add to their tally of 14 headed goals.

West Brom’s percentage of headed goals is higher than Arsenal’s though at 36 per cent (14 from 39 goals).

Swansea and West Ham are the next best on this list with 11 headed goals apiece.

With both teams having a large targetman up front in Fernando Llorente and Andy Carroll - this is perhaps no surprise too. Despite the physical presence of Carroll though, West Ham’s main contributor to this tally is Michail Antonio who has scored six of those.

Crystal Palace, Everton and Liverpool (all 10) are the only other teams to be in double figures with Manchester United (9) one headed goal shy of joining them.

Despite Chelsea seemingly running away with the Premier League title, only five of their 60 goals have come via headers - representing just an eight per cent figure.

Their first came in December with a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace, courtesy of Diego Costa.

The Blues’ tally of five is the 14th best in the league with Stoke (4), Hull, Manchester City and Southampton (all 3), as well as Burnley (2) below them.

However, all of those teams are kept off the bottom spot by Sunderland.

The Black Cats, who are rooted to 20th in the actual league table, are yet to score a headed goal in their 29 games played so far.

But with Sunderland only scoring 24 times this season, supporters will take any goal - regardless of how it comes.

Puel calls for a clinical edge

Show/hide article…

Saints were frustrated by AFC Bournemouth in a goalless draw at St Mary’s, after creating a number of first-half opportunities.

And Puel is expecting another battle against Sam Allardyce’s men, who are fresh off the back of an away win at league leaders Chelsea.

ā€œIt’s important now to try to have good results. It’s important now to find a good balance, to find a clinical edge because we haven’t scored in the last game,ā€ Puel said.

ā€œThere’s a good spirit in the team, we try to play good football and these three games, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and West Brom are all difficult.

ā€œThey are all direct opponents who are with confidence after good recent results. Crystal Palace have won their last games including the win over Chelsea.

ā€œIt’s important we have a good focus and concentration about this strong team. They are physical and good on the counter-attack.

ā€œWe need to give a good response on Wednesday.ā€

Cherries want to sign Wilshere permanently

Show/hide article…

Eddie Howe remains determined to sign Jack Wilshere on a permanent basis despite relegating the midfielder to Bournemouth’s substitutes.

Despite his arrival on loan from Arsenal last summer being considered a significant coup, he has started the past four games on the bench and was left out of the most recent England squad.

However Howe, tipped in some quarters as a potential future manager of the national team, still hopes to sign Wilshere at the end of the season and could recall him at Liverpool on Wednesday after Andrew Surman suffered a knee injury in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Southampton.

ā€œI’ve always said, ā€˜We love Jack, we would love to sign him’,ā€ said Howe, 39. "But that decision will rest with Arsenal, with Jack, with other people: it’s out of our hands. And Jack may well see his future elsewhere.

"He did say as soon as he came to us that he’d totally commit to us for the season, and then in the summer sort out of his future.

"There’s so many variables, there’s so many things that can change, it’s not the right time. We’ve got to concentrate on results and the games we’ve got coming up.

"Jack obviously wouldn’t want to start from the bench, he’d want to be playing, but since the Manchester United game - he felt his ankle against Manchester City - the team’s done very well, and it’s very difficult to take either centre-forward out.

ā€œWhat he has done when he’s come on is showed he’s got a great attitude; he’s trained so well, and that’s reflected when he’s come on the pitch, he’s been outstanding. He really was the defining factor in us gaining total control (against Southampton).ā€

Wilshere, 25, has been joined on the bench by Ā£15million club-record signing Jordon Ibe, and Ireland’s Harry Arter, who will also be in contention to replace Surman.

ā€œWe’ve got real competition in that position,ā€ the manager said. "It’s probably the area of the team where I’ve got an array of options. You’ve seen Harry Arter come off the bench: he’s been outstanding for us this season. You’ve got Jack; Dan Gosling’s done very well for us in recent weeks "(Wilshere’s) been an outstanding professional. And I can’t speak highly enough of him, as a player and as a person. If you look at Jack’s season overall, there’s massive, massive positives.

ā€œHe’s played so many games, a lot of 90 minutes: this is just a little spell where he’s been out of the team but he’s still coming on to great effect. Overall he’s stayed fit: it has to be a huge positive for him, this season.ā€

Puel gives Gabbiadini fitness update

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel has confirmed that Manolo Gabbiadini is out of the Crystal Palace game at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.

The Italian striker, who has scored six goals in his first five Saints appearances since a £14.6m January move from Napoli, remains sidelined with a groin injury he picked up at Tottenham just over two weeks ago.

Puel had hoped the 25-year-old would be back for the Palace match, but will now be monitoring him ahead of the visit to West Brom on Saturday.

Along with Saints’ long-term absentees, Puel stated that Sofiane Boufal is a doubt for the Eagles clash after picking a muscle injury in training.

ā€œI don’t know if Sofiane Boufal will be available (against Palace) because of something he picked up in training in his muscle,ā€ the boss said.

ā€œGabbiadini is not available for this game, but we will see with the next game against West Bromwich.ā€

He added: "He (Gabbiadini) has started to run but cannot, for the moment, make training sessions with the squad.

"I don’t know, we will see this, I hope (he can be back) the next week and if he cannot participate and stay available, we will wait for the next game against Manchester City.

ā€œHe is now an important player for us but for now I prefer speaking about Jay or Shane because now they are the important players for us.ā€
