Eddie Howe refuses to criticise Harry Arter for penalty miss

Show/hide article…

Eddie Howe refused to criticise Harry Arter for missing the late penalty which cost Bournemouth victory at Southampton, but said he would have to consider who takes spot kicks in future.

The south coast derby ended 0-0 at St Mary’s after Arter slipped during his run-up and struck embarrassingly over the crossbar.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane did something similar earlier this season from the same penalty spot, but a bigger concern for Howe is that his team have not scored from their past three penalties.

Howe said: "I don’t know where we go next with our penalty taker. We’ll have to think about it and see.

"It’s obvious he slipped, it’s one of those things. No one goes there to miss. I have to respect that people put themselves up for it, because it’s a difficult role.

"Josh King would have taken it [but] he goes off, you get the penalty, and Harry takes it. You would ideally think a player shouldn’t slip taking a penalty but it’s a high-pressure situation and these things happen.

“More pleasing is the fact we’re creating those opportunities.”

Adam Smith also struck the post during their improved second-half performance, and asked if he felt his team deserved all three points, Howe responded: "Definitely second half, we were excellent in the closing stages.

"We really dominated that last 25 minutes, and created some outstanding opportunities. On another day we’d have scored two or three. It took us until half an hour into the first half to get a foothold.

"[Andrew Surman] twisted his knee in attempting to score from the corner in the first half. We felt he could be good enough second half to go out and perform but he said straight away he was struggling.

"His knee’s in a brace now so it looks like he’ll be out for a period of time.

“We do have some tough games to come. It was important we got something, it edges us closer to where we want to be.”

Southampton 0 Bournemouth 0: Harry Arter balloons penalty as Cherries hoodoo continues

Show/hide article…

Harry Arter missed a second-half penalty that could have given Bournemouth the win

But the midfielder will find it hard to watch a re-run of one of the worst penalties there has ever been.

Bournemouth have never won at Saints – and the 46th-minute sub was gifted the chance to end that appalling record when he strode up to the spot with just 12 minutes to go.

It looked a soft call from referee Jon Moss even though Ryan Bertrand did have a hand on Ryan Fraser’s blue shirt.

Arter looked confident enough but spooned his effort miles over the bar and into the Cherries’ fans behind the goal.

Adam Smith: Bournemouth feeling confident ahead of Liverpool trip

Show/hide article…

Bournemouth defender Adam Smith insists his side will take on high-flying Liverpool on Wednesday in confident mood after extending their unbeaten run in the Premier League to four games.

Saturday’s 0-0 draw at local rivals Southampton, during which Smith struck the post amid a dominant second-half performance that could have secured victory, also represented the Cherries’ second clean sheet in succession.

After a poor start to the year that left Bournemouth at threat of relegation, they have improved since their resilience earned a 1-1 draw at Manchester United last month and they have now climbed up to 11th place.

Earlier on Saturday, Liverpool impressed in defeating Everton 3-1, but Smith has faith in the game plan they will take to Anfield.

‘It’s another tough game but we’re going to go there with confidence; we’re unbeaten in the last four games and we’ll be looking to take that on,’ he told the club’s official website.

'They’ve got quality players and the way they play is very good.

'We know that if we put them under pressure and don’t give them time on the ball we can try and force them into mistakes, we’re going there with a bit of confidence.

‘We’ll have Sunday off and then recover on Monday to prepare for Liverpool.’

Southampton, who sit 10th, level on 34 points with Bournemouth immediately below them, host Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

Palace will go into the match on a massive high following their shock 2-1 victory at Chelsea - giving them a fourth successive win - but Southampton manager Claude Puel is taking confidence from his goalkeeper Fraser Forster’s form.

‘It’s a clean sheet but it is with luck,’ Puel told his club’s website of Saturday’s draw. 'I prefer to get a clean sheet with strong defence and quality.

'I would also like to talk about the good performance of Fraser Forster who made some good saves to get one point.

'It was a good thing to be back at St Mary’s after almost two months but it’s a disappointment because we wanted to offer a good result for all the fans.

‘It’s important now to recover well and to start to think about playing Crystal Palace on Wednesday.’

Funds raised to build memorial for Southampton sailors killed in Titanic sinking

Show/hide article…

MEMBERS of the British Titanic Society will mark its 30th anniversary by raising funds for a memorial to Southampton sailors killed in the disaster.

The city was home to 549 of the 673 White Star employees who died when the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in April 1912.

Overnight more than 232 women in the city were widowed and 1,239 children were left without a father.

Many of the crewmen came from Northam, with almost every street suffering at least one bereavement as a result of the tragedy.

As reported in the Daily Echo, the city’s mother church, St Mary’s in Northam, is raising funds for a stained-glass window in memory of the men who perished.

The window will depict an angel hovering over the Atlantic and holding a ribbon that says “The Crew”.

On April 20 1912 St Mary’s held a memorial service attended by hundreds of mourners including the mayor, Henry Bowyer, and the widow of Titanic’s captain, Edward Smith.

The Bishop of Winchester told the congregation: “In spite of the glory of the spring sunshine streaming in, there is a pall of sorrow over the country, which lay thicker over Southampton. None could remember a greater catastrophe so awful.”

The church’s fundraising has already netted most of the £35,000 needed to finance the new window.

Further fundraising will take place during the British Titanic Society’s annual convention at the Grand Harbour Hotel in West Quay Road, Southampton, this weekend.

The society is celebrating its 30th anniversary and the convention is set to attract its biggest crowd since 2012 - the 100th anniversary of the disaster in which more than 1,500 people died.

A society spokesman said: “An exhibition will include rare and even unique artefacts from Titanic, including an original lifejacket, sheet music that belonged to bandleader Wallace Hartley, and a gold pocket watch picked up by a surviving crew member as the ship was sinking beneath his feet.”

Cash collected during the convention could result in St Mary’s hitting its fundraising target.

Those backing the appeal include film star David Warner, one of the very few actors who have appeared in two Titanic movies.

Romeu: Gabbiadini is a big miss

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu admits free-scoring Manolo Gabbiadini was a big miss at St Mary’s as Saints drew 0-0 with neighbours AFC Bournemouth.

The Italian has scored six goals in his first five appearances for the club, since a £14.6m January move from Napoli, but missed out against the Cherries because of a groin problem, with Jay Rodriguez starting in his stead upfront.

“The shape we had when he [Gabbiadini] was playing was very good and he was scoring and that is very good for the team,” Romeu said.

“Of course we will miss him but I think that Shane [Long] and Jay [Rodriguez] did a good job. Every time they come out they try to do their best.”

Without the in-form 25-year-old, Saints were unable to find the net – despite creating plenty of chances.

“His form was just amazing and he was very dangerous and you could see defenders from other teams were very aware of him at that point," Romeu added.

Dusan Tadic clipped the outside of the post and Maya Yoshida’s header zipped narrowly, while Jay Rodriguez’s powerful volley was saved by Cherries goalkeeper Artur Boruc in a creative first-half from Saints.

The Spanish defensive midfielder was left to rue those missed opportunities.

“You have ups and downs but this was not a bad game from us,” he said.

“The team played well and we had so many chances.

“The only thing was that we did not put the ball in the net and being honest, we should have been one or two up in the first half and that would have given us more room and space to play in the second half.”

However, with Harry Arter missing a penalty on 78 minutes, Adam Smith’s strike hitting the post and Benik Afobe steering a close range effort wide in a dominant second-half from the visitors, Romeu ultimately felt Saints were lucky to come away with a point.

“They had some good chances and we were just defending in the last few minutes of the game," he said.

“In the last 10 minutes, we were just trying to get a counter-attack to get a goal, but in our heads a point was good.”

The 25-year-old didn’t expect Saints to come under so much pressure after the break.

“Well, no, they are a good team and were pushing and it is not easy but after the first half, we thought we could control the game in the second half and have more chances, but we didn’t,” he said.

“We lost some second balls, we lost parts of the pitch and they did well, so a point was good.”
