“Good news” for Saints on van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino hailed Virgil van Dijk’s return to the Saints starting line-up as “good news” for the club.

The Dutch defender made his first since January in the 2-1 defeat at Stoke.

Though he gave away a first half penalty, Pellegrino was generally pleased with how he played after such a long time out, and also praised the 26-year-old’s attitude after all the furore that surrounded his future following his summer transfer request.

“I think he was ok,” surmised Pellegrino. “It is not easy to come back after a long long way, a long period of time, and I think he was correct, focused, and the timing in some action was good.

“I have to try and give some games to everybody to recover our best players.

“It’s good news and not just Virgil but Sofiane (Boufal) played well second half and the level of the team is always with the performance of the players on the line and it’s good news for us.”

Sadly for van Dijk, his return to the team was not quite enough to inspire a win as Saints lost out to Peter Crouch’s late winner.

For Pellegrino it felt like a familiar tale after playing well in the second half against Manchester United the previous week but also coming away with nothing to show for it.

“I feel disappointed for this goal, it was an unlucky action for us that changed completely the history of the game,” reflected Pellegrino.

“I think we put them under pressure even from the beginning, the first half, controlling the ball and in the second half we were much better, pushing them.

“After our goal I think we were much better than them and in this moment I think we were more close to win the game than to lose.

“But it is part of football and we concede a soft goal and it is something we have to improve.

“We showed character, I think we controlled the ball, we moved them, we never give them, except a couple of counter attacks with Shaqiri who is a clever player always looking for spaces behind our midfielders.

“In general I can’t say nothing about our attitude and energy but more or less it is the same history as the other day.

“We play well, we put them under pressure, but we come back home with zero points.”

Pellegrino was spoken to by referee Mike Jones late on, but played down the incident.

He said: “I wanted to take the ball in this moment because we play with just one ball, and I left my zone. The only thing I did was to leave my zone.

“I don’t have any problem with Mark and I respect the referee and I respect Mark. Nothing happened."

Pellegrino praises away support

Show/hide article…

Saints fell behind to Mame Biram Diouf’s first-half header, but deservedly drew level through Maya Yoshida only for substitute Peter Crouch to win the game late on for the hosts.

But Pellegrino is confident the support from the stands will help his players turn positive performances into results in the coming weeks.

“We have to be grateful to them,” he said, of the 2,064 who made the trip to the Potteries.

“They were always getting behind the team, pushing us and giving us the strength and energy to score.

“We have to come home with no points, but in the next few games, playing with this spirit and character, I think we will improve.

“We have to keep going.”

Virgil Van Dijk: I wouldn’t be surprised if Southampton man joins Chelsea - journalist

Show/hide article…

That’s the verdict of The Guardian’s Sachin Nakrani, who jokingly suggested on Twitter that Liverpool should only offer £40m for the Southampton man.

Van Dijk’s future has been the subject of plenty of speculation throughout 2017 with a cluster of big clubs keen on signing him.

A move to Liverpool appeared to be a formality until they were accused of tapping the Holland international up in June.

Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal have all been credited with interest in Van Dijk, who’s just returned to first-team action, as well.

Yoshida: We must bounce back

Show/hide article…

The Japanese international defender’s first away Premier League goal since February 2014 – a sublime scissor-kick - gave the 2,064 travelling Southampton fans hope of at least a draw at the bet365 Stadium, only for Peter Crouch to tap in late on to seal the points for Stoke.

What counts now is the way Mauricio Pellegrino’s men respond against Newcastle in two weeks’ time at St.Mary’s.

“It’s disappointing to lose what was a very important game. The next step now is to make sure we return from the international break in good shape and bounce back with a home win.

"The fans got behind us and their support was fantastic; hopefully we can regroup and get a positive result from the Newcastle match.”

For Yoshida, while dominating for large periods of the encounter in the Potteries, a sloppy start to the game meant that Saints were facing an uphill battle throughout against a competitive Stoke side.

“We didn’t play well enough in the first half,” he added. “We afforded them too many opportunities on the counter-attack. Things improved after the break and we made more chances after equalising but we ultimately very unlucky to concede like that at the end.

“There were similarities here with the United game in the way that we controlled possession. That said, we know that we need to improve going forward and we conceded two goals today so there is work to be done at the back as well.

“Looking just at myself, my job is to help keep things tight at the other end. It is a shame that my goal didn’t lead to a win.”

WATCH: Stoke 2-1 Southampton

Show/hide article…

Stoke substitute Peter Crouch spared Saido Berahino’s blushes as he came off the bench to register the winner against old club Southampton.

Having led through Mame Diouf’s header, Berahino then had a chance to end a goalless streak that dates back to February 2016, but he missed his fourth successive penalty during that drought as Fraser Forster kept it out.

It looked like it would prove costly when Maya Yoshida headed in a 75th-minute equaliser, yet Crouch, who came on for Berahino, poked in the winner from close range to make it 2-1 and earn the Potters their first win in six.
