Stoke City vs. Southampton - Football Match Report - September 30, 2017 - ESPN

Show/hide article…

Despite earning a win, Mark Hughes hoped to see his Stoke side control their home match against Southampton stronger. (0:28)

Stoke substitute Peter Crouch spared Saido Berahino’s blushes as he came off the bench to register the winner against old club Southampton.

Having led through Mame Diouf’s header, Berahino then had a penalty to end a goalless streak that dates back to February 2016, but he missed his fourth successive spot-kick during that drought as Fraser Forster kept it out.

It looked like it would prove costly when Maya Yoshida headed in a 75th-minute equaliser, yet Crouch, who came on for Berahino, poked in the winner from close range to make it 2-1 and earn the Potters their first win in six.

Berahino had been praised by his manager Mark Hughes on Friday and he was handed a recall for a Stoke side missing Jese Rodriguez through compassionate leave.

There was also a first start of the season for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk after the Liverpool target was denied a summer move away.

The Dutchman last started in January, with a foot injury ending his campaign early last season, and it was evident early on just why he was so sought after as he made three key blocks.

His central-defensive partner Yoshida was sidestepped easily by Xherdan Shaqiri when the Swiss fired at Forster, with Diouf dithering over the rebound and allowing Mario Lemina to stop his shot.

In the battle of the back-up England goalkeepers, Jack Butland produced his own fine save to deny Shane Long from close range when he was played in by Oriol Romeu, though Forster was still being kept busier as he denied Maxim Choupo-Moting.

However, Forster was helpless when Stoke went ahead five minutes before the interval through Diouf, who nodded in unmarked from Shaqiri’s near-post corner.

The Potters looked set to double that advantage three minutes later when the otherwise faultless Van Dijk clipped Berahino as he came across him in the box.

Despite his recent woeful record from the spot, the 24-year-old stepped up himself only for Forster to guess correctly, diving left to keep out a penalty that was not struck into the corner.

What should have been a morale-boosting moment for Berahino only proved to further sap his confidence.

He barely had a sniff to register his first Stoke goal, and his first in 32 appearances, after the break before being replaced by Crouch 20 minutes from time.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino brought on Sofiane Boufal in the 61st minute in place of captain Steven Davis, with a member of the visiting backroom staff making sure the armband was passed to Yoshida rather than previous incumbent Van Dijk.

And it was the man in possession of that armband who levelled.

Boufal reached the byline after his initial corner was cleared out to him and his cross was flicked on by Long to where Yoshida could dispatch a scissor-kick volley in off the crossbar.

Yet another of the replacements, one familiar to Saints fans from his season with them over a decade ago, had the final say.

Stoke wanted a penalty again when Joe Allen went down under a challenge from Romeu, but play continued and Shaqiri released Erik Pieters to cross for Choupo-Moting.

His first effort was blocked by Forster’s leg, but from the ground he poked back towards goal and Crouch was on hand to sweep in from a couple of yards out to win it.

Pellegrino: We were the dominant team

Show/hide article…

Hosts Stoke City went in front through Mame Biram Diouf’s 40th minute header, before Fraser Forster saved Saido Berahino’s penalty to keep Saints within striking distance.

What followed after the break was relentless pressure from the visitors, who deservedly drew level through Maya Yoshida’s acrobatic volley, only to concede again as Stoke substitute Peter Crouch flicked in a cruel winner five minutes from time.

“We dominated them,” Pellegrino said. “We didn’t create much, but we always controlled the ball and never gave them the possibility to control the game.

“We conceded a couple of chances on the counter-attack, because Shaqiri is a clever player who was always looking for spaces behind our midfielders, but in the second half we were much better.

“We conceded from a corner and then we scored from a corner, but we also created a couple of chances in the first half that were clearer than the ones in the second half.

“We drew level in the game when we were much better than them, but then we concede the winning goal.

“We are disappointed because I think we played a really good game, putting them under pressure even from the beginning.”

Stoke 2-1 Southampton: Pellegrino urges Saints to keep faith

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has urged Saints to keep playing the way they are, insisting they will ‘win more than they lose.’ The new Saints boss heads into the latest international break having started with two victories in his first eight games in charge, and with goals in short supply.

The latest defeat came at Stoke, where Peter Crouch struck late to condemn Saints to a 2-1 loss.

Saints did produce some good attacking football, but again a failure to score goals cost them dearly.

Pellegrino wants his team to going the same way, believing the results will come.

He said: “For sure we will try different players, different positions. It is something we are doing because during the game we changed two or three times.

“Sometimes it depends on the positions, sometimes no, because when you change too much they don’t have time to be connect between them.

“I think in the last few games we deserve a little bit more.

“One thing is the score and another is what we are doing on the pitch and we have to analyse well to do some change.”

He added: “It could be a lack of goals, but it could also be we have to avoid (conceding) this type of goals.

“I think the football today with the majority of the teams it’s really difficult to create chances and to score goals.

“Today we did, we create a couple of clear chances in the first half, and in the second half we were there.

“Ok, we have to keep going, and we repeat, playing in this way we will win more than we lose.”

Maya Yoshida popped up to deliver Saints’ fifth goal of the season with a stunning volley on 75 minutes, cancelling out Mame Diouf’s first half header.

However, Crouch’s winner five minutes from time meant it was a disappointing journey home for Saints, who were again left to rue chances created but squandered.

“In football when you work with a group of people always when you are right it is about a lot of things, and when you are wrong it is about a lot of things. It’s the same,” insisted Pellegrino.

“When the team has success everybody is responsible and when the team don’t get results it’s not just about one thing, it’s about a lot of things is my opinion.”

Fleming: Pleased to see defenders on the scoresheet

Show/hide article…

The victory lifted Saints in to the top half of the U18s Premier League table, with striker Michael Obafemi adding to his growing goal tally, and defensive pairing Ollie Gardner and Jake Vokins finding the net to cap a bright display.

Reflecting on the win, Fleming said: "We’re getting there, the performances have been quite consistent throughout, but we’re always trying to improve in games. I’d still like to be a bit more clinical in the final third.

“Talking to an ex-defender, I’m pleased with the clean sheet. At academy level goals seem to fly in week on week, but defensively I thought we were solid and we created an awful lot of chances today.”

A centre-half in his playing days, the 45-year-old was particularly delighted to see two defenders on the scoresheet, while reserving additional praise for Ireland international, Obafemi.

He added: "Always pleasing to see defenders scoring goals, Christoph had one disallowed as well. Attacking the ball is something we’ve been working on in training

"I thought our decision-making and execution of cross needs works, it is an area we need to improve.

“Michael is a real handful up front, he’s got real pace and power. And starting to find some consistency in his performances now.”

Dja Djedje strike edges Watford past Saints

Show/hide article…

A stunning goal from Brice Dja Djedje helped Watford defeat Southampton 2-1 in their opening Group B Premier League Cup fixture.

Michael Folivi put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot after 23 minutes at Staplewood Training Ground.

It could have been 1-1 but Marcus Barnes was denied from 12 yards by Hornets goalkeeper Nathan Gartside.

Watford made it 2-0 on 65 minutes when Dja Djedje struck from 20 yards before Callum Slattery reduced the deficit with Southampton’s second penalty.

Southampton’s next Group B opponents are Watford on Thursday 2 November with Watford hosting Blackburn Rovers the following Monday.

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton were unlucky in defeat to Stoke

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino felt Southampton were “unlucky” after their narrow 2-1 defeat at Stoke on Saturday.

Peter Crouch’s late winner condemned the Saints to their third Premier League defeat from seven matches.

The visitors had Fraser Forster’s penalty save from Saido Berahino to thank for keeping them in the game after Mame Biram Diouf’s opener and it looked like they had earned a draw when Maya Yoshida fired in an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining.

But Crouch popped up to scramble in Stoke’s second, leaving Pellegrino to bemoan Southampton’s continuing misfortune in front of goal.

“We were unlucky, we were pushing until the end and we put them under pressure all the time,” Pellegrino said. "It’s part of football.

"They scored two goals and we scored one, we have to learn for the future. We deserved a little bit more but it’s the third or fourth game that we are talking about the same history.

“I can’t say anything because our attitude was really good until the end. We were pushing them until the end on their pitch. In one part of the game we were well but in another part we have to keep going.”

Pellegrino praised Forster for his spot-kick save to deny Berahino but admitted the Saints have plenty to work on over the international break.

“It [the penalty save] was a key moment because for us it increased the confidence,” he added. "For sure after our goal we were there in the game but I will repeat, at the end the opponent scored the goal and we have to congratulate them.

“It’s a difficult situation for us because 50 per cent of the squad are internationals. I have to work with the 50 per cent who remain but it’s a good time to reflect, rest and to prepare in the best way for our next game.”

Liverpool must get Virgil van Dijk to solve defensive woes - Reds legend Graeme Souness

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is the answer to Liverpool’s defensive woes for Graeme Souness

The Dutchman, 26, looked to be nearing a move to Anfield in August before the Saints blocked his move.

Souness, who had spells managing both Southampton and Liverpool, is now hoping the Reds can strike a deal in the new year after failing with a £60million bid this summer.

And Liverpool desperately need him.

After just six Premier League games the Reds have coughed up 11 goals – the joint-third worst record in the division.

Souness reckons Van Dijk would help solve the problem.

The Scot said: “I am a fan of Van Dijk. When he was at Celtic I thought it was too easy for him. He makes it look simple.

“Anybody who makes the job look easy is worth keeping an eye on.
