Stoke City striker Saido Berahino last scored a goal 583 days ago

Show/hide article…

In 2010, England’s kit sponsors Umbro perceived Saido Berahino to be the future of football in this country. As a 17-year-old, he shared the stage for a promotional photo-shoot with Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott and Eric Dier.

As a young hopeful, the 2018 World Cup in Russia would have been a key objective. Yet as England manager Gareth Southgate watched on here, Berahino, still only 24, is barely a footnote to the national discussion.

His turmoil becomes more acute by the week. He has encountered discipline problems, accusations of poor fitness, an eight-week ban for recreational drug use and now the mother of all goal-scoring slumps.

In its most bleak terms, 583 days have passed since Berahino scored a competitive goal.

He is still to score since signing for Stoke in January and his last goal for previous club West Bromwich Albion came in February 2016.

In the Premier League, he has subsequently played 1,908 minutes, had 38 shots and failed to score.

There has been one assist in that time. He has now also missed four penalties since he last scored. Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster denied him from the spot this time.

ā€˜I’d be lying if I said it hadn’t been frustrating for me,’ Berahino said. ā€˜I’ve been brought here to score goals and I believe I can do that. The most important thing is the manager has still got belief in me.’

That manager, Mark Hughes, admitted he has had him in for extra finishing practice. He did not play badly here but Hughes said: ā€˜On occasions he will have a little bit of doubt but we tell him to concentrate on doing the right things. It is a difficult period but we feel it is just a matter of time.’

Berahino was replaced in the 70th minute by Peter Crouch, who scored a late winner. Hughes suggested the 36-year-old may have his contract extended by another year.

Stoke took the lead from a Mame Biram Diouf header but, after Berahino’s penalty miss, Southampton equalised through Maya Yoshida.

Berahino had to fight Stoke teammate Shaqiri over missed penalty chance

Show/hide article…

Stoke striker Saido Berahino will not shy away from taking another penalty, despite missing four in a row since he last scored a goal and saying he had ā€œto fightā€ teammate Xherdan Shaqiri to take his missed penalty against Southampton.

The 24-year-old had a great opportunity to end his long goalless drought when he won a first-half penalty against Saints on Saturday only to see Fraser Forster keep his effort out in a game that saw Peter Crouch score a late winner to seal a 2-1 victory.

It is now 32 games without netting for Berahino, a run that dates back to his West Brom days, and the barren spell has included a quartet of spot-kick failures.

He had two saved in one game for the Baggies against Watford in April 2016, fired wide in a League Cup shootout against Northampton the following season and was then denied by Forster on Saturday.

The Potters did not have a designated penalty taker on the field and Berahino revealed he had risked Shaqiri’s wrath by stepping up to the plate.

"Of course I would have taken another one but I don’t want to be greedy,’’ Berahino said. "I know Shaqiri wanted to kill me over that one; I had to fight Shaqiri to take that one.

"I got to take that one because I was the one who was fouled so he allowed me to take it, but it is what it is.’’

Three seasons ago Berahino scored 20 goals in a campaign for West Brom and was called up to the England squad.

Now he just wants to open his account for a Stoke side that in January rescued him from a situation that had soured at The Hawthorns.

"I’d be lying if I said it hadn’t been frustrating for me,’’ Berahino admitted. "But the most important thing is the manager [Mark Hughes] has still got belief in me and the players know what I’m about and they see it every day in training.

"When the floodlights come on I want that first goal and I’d be happy to score. I’m not going to beat myself up about it too much but I believe I’m focused out there on the pitch.

"Strikers live by their goals, that’s what we’re paid for. I’ve been brought here to score goals and I believe I can do that.’’

On Saturday Berahino had won his penalty off Virgil van Dijk, who was otherwise brilliant on his first start since January.

A foot injury ended his season prematurely then but his absence in the early games of this campaign was due to the reintegration process that followed his failure to force through a summer move away from Southampton.

Saints ignored Liverpool’s attempts to land Van Dijk and captain Steven Davis knows how big an asset the Dutchman will remain to his team now the window is closed.

"We all know what he’s done here in previous seasons and I’m delighted we’ve kept hold of him,’’ Davis said.

"It hasn’t affected the squad but it’s a difficult situation for the individual to deal with.

"There was obviously a lot going on. The transfer window can be a difficult place at times mentally.

"But it’s good he’s come out of the other side of it. He’s back in training, full of energy and has a desire to get back into the team and play his part.’’

Premier League fans’ verdict: Manchester United record familiar score

Show/hide article…

Manchester United continue their impressive form while their City rivals lay down a statement of intent with a huge win over Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Everton continue to struggle and life just gets worse for sorry Crystal Palace.

Here, Sportsmail gets the fans’ verdict following an entertaining weekend of action…

We simply couldn’t stop Harry Kane today. A joy to watch in how he found space, and a masterclass in finishing. Spurs’ clinical finishing was impressive, however Town didn’t help themselves.

Lowe and Smith gifted the first two goals, and Kane’s stunning third was straight from a throw in!

There were positives, as yet again Depoitre put in a real shift up top - feeding off scraps - while Schindler was a bright spark in an otherwise poor defence. Just like Van La Parra last week, I hope Alli recieves the criticism his shocking dive deserves.

Well that was a stroll in the park. After blowing Huddersfield’s battlers away in the first 25 minutes with a display of devastating finishing from Harry Kane, the second half was somewhat of an anticlimax.

However, the much maligned Moussa Sissoko notched his first goal for Spurs at the death making it 4-0 and a sixth away win in a row.

Pochettino has his team magnificently drilled and another terrific season beckons.

The Cherries will be distraught that they did not sweep Leicester aside. We hit the woodwork twice and if one goal had gone in it would have been followed by several more.

We can argue that some penalty calls were unjustly waved away, but Bournemouth had loads of chances to win this.

Marc Pugh, especially, having come into the team could not have tried harder, but he’ll be gutted he did not score.

The big positive is that Lewis Cook was superb in midfield, linking up play and making incisive passes – who needs Jack Wilshere?

Another disappointing performance from the Foxes in a game that we really needed to win to kickstart the season after a very tough start.

We could easily have been three down at half-time if Bournemouth had been more ruthless but we held on.

We did improve slightly in the second half and actually could’ve won it if Okazaki had taken his chance but it really would’ve been a smash and grab. Vast improvements are needed.

It seems 4-0 is the new 1-1 for United.

Doing it once could be luck, twice is great but more than that? It’s a habit.

United are firing on all cylinders and that’s without Paul Pogba.

Bring on Liverpool - that’s the real test and if we win that then, well, United have to be considered title favourites alongside City.

At least Palace are breaking records every week and being talked about!

In all seriousness, this is getting silly now. While most did not expect much from the trip to Old Trafford, a performance of sorts would provide some small consolation.

We knew Roy Hodgson had a job on his hands and it was always going to be mission impossible with these consecutive tough games.

Bring on no goals or points from eight games so we can all move on.

I’d imagine Southampton must be wondering how on earth they managed to lose the game.

Stoke were as frustrating as ever, missing easy passes, giving away possession carelessly, failing to take the chance to kill the game and then almost throwing everything away through blind panic.

owever, they found a way to win and there was plenty of character shown by many of our players during a frantic injury time assault by The Saints.

We’ve played better than this in the past, much better in fact, and ended up losing so we’ll tip our caps to the footballing gods and say thank you for the three points. The win was what mattered and we got it.

Today was a fantastic opportunity to gain some momentum but, just like a chance that has dropped perfectly for us inside the box, we failed to take it.

The decision to start Shane Long baffled me given Stoke’s willingness to play a deep block (he was only ever meant to be a short-term fix) and Nathan Redmond needs to start repaying Pellegrino’s faith.

Over two weeks now, Southampton have played a cautious first half, consequently gone 1-0 down, and only then showed attacking intent when it’s often too little, too late.

Showings like this are popping up all too often…

What can you say? Two-nil up a little after 20 minutes and cruising it should have been a much-needed home win after no wins in five.

What followed was Tony Pulis showing once again he is tactically inept when Plan A goes out of the window.

Just two league wins from his last 15 matches simply isn’t good enough at this level.

On a positive note, Kyrchowiak is one of the best passers of the ball I’ve seen at The Hawthorns.

Man City and Chelsea are our next two home games. I really worry.

Maybe we should rest Richarlison every game and just bring him on in injury time, because he seems to love a late equaliser or winner.

But despite the late ecstasy, that felt like a game we could and should have won.

We were the better team for most of the match, but had to work hard to get back into it after three minutes of appalling defending left us 2-0 down.

Gomes had a game to forget and we were far from clinical up front, but Silva delivered again to keep us unbeaten on the road.

West Ham were in desperate need of a result and in spite of what was a pretty dire and uninspiring performance, they got one.

Slaven Bilic earned himself a stay of execution courtesy of Sakho’s late winner but it’s evident that the fans aren’t content with performances and tactics right now.

All this result does is paper over some very large cracks and you fear sooner or later patience with Bilic from the board will wear thin.

That was painful. Not just Diafra Sakho’s 90th minute winner for West Ham — I’m talking about the Swansea performance as well.

The home side were poor, the away side were equally as poor and it made for a lacklustre and uneventful game of football.

The Swans, yet again, were hopeless in attack and the midfield hasn’t got a clue what to do with the ball, too.

It’s mind-boggling how we’ve become so inept at playing - what we used to be renowned for - good football.

One thing’s for certain though, we’re in the bottom three now and if we don’t see any improvement soon, we’ll still be there in May.

We’ve got Huddersfield next, and if we fail to win, the pressure will be on for Clement.

There are very few times in football as an opposing supporter that you can have no complaints.

As much as I would have loved to have carried on the crest of a wave from Madrid last Wednesday, Chelsea were well and truly brought back down to earth with a thud!

Outclassed, out-fought and looking like we would have been happy to settle for a draw, Chelsea were made to pay by Kevin De Bruyne.

I would love to write positives for Chelsea in this one but I’m afraid I can’t do it today.

Fair play to our opponents. Chelsea still have work to do.

A huge test of our credentials and we came through superbly - dominated possession, limited Chelsea to virtually nothing and De Bruyne’s strike was a fitting winner.

Delph was a revelation at left-back, Stones continues to grow in stature and Fernandinho is the machine that keeps us ticking over. Fully deserved win!

Arsenal dominated possession from start to finish and peppered the away team’s goal with a massive 25 attempts.

Sharper finishing from Sanchez and Ramsey could have see the two-goal haul trebled.

The soothing tonic was that injured Mesut Ozil wasn’t missed. Arsenal are going to cope just fine without his presence.

Arsene Wenger racked up an expected three points and continued a stylish recovery as he heads into a fairly comfortable October.

We worked hard and looked dangerous from set-pieces and if Solly March’s screamer had gone in, we might have rocked the library.

At least we had a better weekend than the teams we need below us.

The arrival of Krul has put pressure on Mat Ryan and he has responded well.

After a bright start Everton conspired to produce another flat display.

Against a deep, well-organised Burnley conceding a goal was only going to increase the worry around Goodison and so it proved to be.

October will forever be the bellwether month of how teams perform (especially Everton). For us it has begun poorly and it doesn’t look like the manager, the players and the performances will be suggesting improvements.

The boos and and angry feelings at the end of the game will be around for some time at Everton. The summer days of optimism, signings and a new era are well and truly over.

This is Burnley. This is the much talked about team who struggled badly away from home last season. Yet here we are with eight points from the first four away games at Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and Everton.

Today’s win at Everton was simply outstanding and was won with a brilliant team goal finished by Jeff Hendrick. We had to do some defending at times but we did so well that they hardly had a clear-cut chance.

Once Philippe Coutinho’s strike sailed past Rob Elliot, it looked as if Liverpool would take it up a gear and cause us serious problems.

However Joselu’s equaliser halted their momentum. Jonjo Shelvey and Mikel Merino look a strong midfield partnership, though Isaac Hayden’s denfensive discipline was missed on occasions.

Groundhog Day. Liverpool seem to dominate every game they play but it counts for very little because the forwards don’t take their chances and their defenders are taking it in turns to gift the opposition a goal.

This time it was Joel Matip who unforgivably allowed Joselu to run through the centre and score, albeit extremely fortuitously.

At the other end it’s beginning to feel like if Philippe Coutinho isn’t banging in screamers then Liverpool won’t score.

Frustrating doesn’t even begin to describe this team.

Show/hide article…

Kane scored 13 goals for club and country in September, scoring twice during Spurs’ 4-0 win at Huddersfield on Saturday.

Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho (No 2, up seven places) broke the deadlock at Newcastle with another long-range stunner before Joselu (No 80, up 59 places) salvaged a point for the Magpies.

Last week’s table-topper Sergio Aguero slipped five places to No 6, having missed the game at Stamford Bridge after suffering broken ribs from a car crash in Amsterdam on Thursday.

Watford’s Richarlison climbed three places to secure the No 4 spot in this week’s chart, scoring in the last minute for the second successive week during a 2-2 draw at West Brom.

Nacho Monreal (No 5, up 23 places) fired through a crowd to put Arsenal ahead during a 2-0 win over Brighton on Sunday, with goalkeeper Petr Cech (No 10, up seven places) keeping his fourth successive clean sheet.

THE VERDICT: Time for progress

Show/hide article…

We have had the settling in period, and now we are at the point where more substantive progress is required.

Mauricio Pellegrino has had the chance to get his feet under the table at St Mary’s, to get to know his team and start to implement his philosophy and ideas.

In modern day football patience is thin on the ground, and that always seems a little harsh, but after struggling to really hit the ground running in terms of results, he needs at least some more performances to show the way Saints are heading.

We have seen it in patches, most recently in the second halves against Manchester United and Stoke. That has been progress of a sort.

But when you have won just two of your first eight games in all competitions – and against, United aside, fairly middling opposition - you are going to be all too aware of the need to get some momentum going.

Saints are into another international break now left to ponder on many of the same dilemmas that have been troubling them for some time.

Goals, or a lack of them, remains top of the agenda.

You could take the viewpoint that Saints don’t have the players they need, that the balance of the squad isn’t correct. But then Pellegrino himself hasn’t really suggested that.

Therefore something really needs to change.

There isn’t any need to panic in terms of the early league table etc, and therefore Pellegrino deserves continued patience when it comes to results.

But he really needs to show he is stamping his authority on things, and that his principles are bearing fruit.

Even in this day and age people shouldn’t ask for everything all at once, but you want clear signs that things are heading in the right direction.

Right now they are all too fleeting.

It will be interesting to see how Pellegrino reacts.

So far he has been cautious, keen not to change too many things and rock the boat.

But with that failing to really deliver what he and the club wants, a fortnight to chew things over is a long time for ideas to percolate.

Despite his reluctance, maybe there will be a formation change, a switch in tactical emphasis, perhaps a way to get two up top by playing three centre halves. It doesn’t really feel like just sticking with more of the same is a particularly viable option.

Panicking would be a bad move, but there comes a time when some sort of action is required.

Saints’ game at Stoke was another example of a match they could have won which they didn’t.

There were plenty of chances for Saints again, but only one was taken, and that a spectacular goal from a centre half. In the end it cost them as Stoke nicked the three points.

It was certainly a more open affair than many would have predicted before kick-off, but it was two teams with plenty of competence and spirit, but both clearly a little short in the final third.

Fraser Forster made first half saves from the outstanding Xherdan Shaqiri, whose ability to find space between the lines Saints struggled to deal with, as well as Maxim Choupo-Moting.

At the other end Jack Butland smothered when Shane Long might have scored while Nathan Redmond put wide after being played in by Dusan Tadic.

Stoke took the lead on 40 minutes with a disappointingly soft goal.

Shaqiri delivered an inswinging right wing corner, Mame Diouf had lost Mario Lemina with a simple run and headed home unmarked in the centre of the goal six yards out.

Virgil van Dijk, restored to the starting line-up for the first time since January, showed his reading of the game by being on hand for a few superb last ditch challenges, but his match rustiness was apparent at times.

None more so than when he gave away a penalty just minutes later, clearly dragging back Saido Berahino.

The Stoke striker stepped up to take the spot kick himself and put it at a nice height for Forster, who made an excellent save diving to his left to really keep his team in it.

Stoke produced some questionable second half tactics, opting to lose pretty much all attacking threat and defend their one goal lead.

They sat so deep, got men behind the ball, gave Saints almost total possession and simply seemed to believe that Saints would fail to break them down.

Their confidence didn’t waver as Saints spurned chances. Both Long and van Dijk missed the target with clear headers, but they eventually made the breakthrough on 75 minutes.

The goal, only the fifth of the season for Saints, saw a scrappy build-up but a remarkable finish as Maya Yoshida produced a dramatic acrobatic volley in the area that slammed in off the underside of the bar.

With the momentum having been so firmly behind Saints throughout the second period, you felt the game was theirs to win, yet it was Stoke who bagged what proved to be the winner five minutes from time, Peter Crouch finishing from close range, again taking advantage of poor collective defending.

Saints had a late rally and might have found another goal were it not for Manolo Gabbiadini failing to make contact with Ryan Bertrand’s cross and Kurt Zouma hacking clear after Charlie Austin had bundled the ball past Butland.

With four more very winnable matches coming up after this international break and before the next, you sense this is a crunch period in the season for Saints to set out their ambitions. Things certainly get a lot tougher thereafter.

Pellegrino’s mind may be whirring a lot over the next couple of weeks.

Experienced heads issue rallying cry to Saints

Show/hide article…

MAYA Yoshida has urged Saints to ā€œget back on track as soon as possibleā€ after the international break following back-to-back Premier League defeats.

Saints have won just two games in their opening eight games in all competitions and there is some concern considering Mauricio Pellegrino’s men have only faced one of the top-flight’s big guns so far.

Yoshida netted a stunning goal in Saints’ latest defeat to Stoke, making it 1-1 on 75 minutes before Peter Crouch scored to win it for the hosts with only five minutes left to play.

Many of Saints’ players now disappear on international duty, but will be back ahead of Newcastle’s visit to St Mary’s a week Sunday.

Pellegrino’s men then face West Brom, Brighton and Burnley, so the favourable fixtures continue and Yoshida knows it’s paramount that Saints get back to winning ways.

ā€œAs a centre-back it means something really small,ā€ he said about scoring. ā€œIf we concede two goals and lose I can never be happy with that.

ā€œA goal is a goal but the most important thing is the three points today. But we couldn’t get them and we couldn’t play well.

ā€œPerhaps we couldn’t get the points but we didn’t show our qualities either. That’s my frustration.

ā€œEspecially in the first half we are not aggressive enough and we couldn’t the points.

ā€œNow we have to get back on track as soon as possible after the international break.

ā€œThe important thing is to come back quickly and fresh after the internationals.ā€

The statistics from Stoke paint a curious picture, with Saints commanding 70 per cent of the possession overall and having more shots than the hosts.

But it is the efforts on target where Saints’ familiar issues are laid bare, with just three shots on target to Stoke’s six.

ā€œIt’s been our Achilles heel so to speak,ā€ said Steven Davis. ā€œWe didn’t test (Stoke goalkeeper Jack) Butland enough today and we need to realise that and when we get those opportunities make sure we get shots off and test the keeper.ā€

Captain Davis has urged Saints to dust themselves down and go again after a disappointing period.

ā€œWe had a lot of possession but we didn’t make the most of it,ā€ he said. ā€œIt’s another frustrating one and we’re disappointed not to come away with anything.

ā€œEspecially when we got back in to the game at 1-1 and you’re thinking there will be only one winner here.

ā€œBut we’re getting punished for the mistakes we make.ā€

ā€œWe just need to pick ourselves up and stick together and keep trying to do the right things,ā€ he added.
