The former Southampton and England forward went up against Griffith in the John Arne Riise Arena on Saturday morning, but saw his first of three penalties saved by the presenter.

Le Tiss quickly regained form, sending Griffith the wrong way with his other two penalties.

Soccer Special pundit Le Tissier converted 47 of his 48 penalties during his 16-year playing career.

U18s Report: Saints 3-0 Swansea

Show/hide article…

After a dreary first half, Saints sprung in to life in the second period, dictating play, and finding the net three times to cap an impressive display.

Defender Vokins stole the show, assisting the second goal, while scoring the third, to ensure the home side emerged convincing victors.

The visitors were perhaps the quicker out the starting gate, maintaining possession in the middle third, but it was Saints who lay first assault on their opposition goal.

Starting in place of the injured Harrison Davis, Dan Bartlett’s volleyed layoff found the feet of Vokins, who whipped an inviting ball in to the path of Obafemi.

Fresh from his goal last week, the striker collected the pass in his stride before unleashing a shot that was well blocked by recovering Swans defender Ben Cabango.

Moments later Saints skipper Christoph Klarer had punctured the Swansea backline with a bullet header from Vokins’ inswinging corner, only for the referee’s whistle to curtail celebrations.

The Welsh side adopted a higher press midway through the first period, committing men forward to pressurise the ball, and it nearly paid dividends in the 25th minute.

Arnor Gudjohnsen, half-brother of former Chelsea and Barcelona star Eidur, escaped his marker six yards from goal but couldn’t direct his diving header on target.

Saints had a chance to enter the break with a narrow advantage on the stroke of half time, as Obafemi continued to be the home side’s most likely threat. The Irish international killed the ball well, before shuffling sideways to engineer room for the shot, but fired disappointingly over.

Eager to get on the front foot, Kornelius Hansen emerged from the interval intent on testing opposition 'keeper Alex Lang. Operating in a less familiar role on the wing, the Norwegian approached the box with pace in the 50th minute, before curling a chipped effort over Lang but wide of the far post.

And the Swans shot stopper was scrambling once more minutes later, when a neat Southampton move was rounded off by a fierce Bartlett drive from 20 yards. Clever with his movement, Obafemi was involved in the build-up, but the eventual shot kissed the wrong side of the side netting.

The deadlock was deservedly broken in the 65th minute, when clumsy defending saw Obafemi upended in the technical area. The striker was quick to claim the penalty, and duly rolled the ball under Lang to put Saints in command.

Before long the floodgates opened, as defensive pairing Gardner and Vokins gave Saints an unassailable lead. A quick-fire double from corners; Gardner was on hand to tap in Vokins’ in-swinging corner, before the England international helped himself to a goal, directly from a left-sided corner.

Good value for the win, Saints’ youngsters cruised to victory, and decreased their margin on the top half of the table in the U18s Premier League.

Peter Crouch nets late winner as Virgil van Dijk makes Saints comeback

Show/hide article…

Super sub Peter Crouch bagged the winner five minutes from time as Saido Berahino squandered a glorious chance to end his goal drought.

Crouch came off the bench to grab a point at West Brom - and the evergreen hitman repeated his goalscoring heroics to earn Stoke their second league win of the campaign.

Southampton went to sleep to allow the unmarked Mame Diouf to head home Xherdan Shaqiri’s corner on 40 minutes to open the scoring.

Berahino’s nightmare moment came three minutes later when he was tugged back by Virgil van Dijk for a penalty.

Berahino eagerly grabbed the ball, sensing his chance had finally come, only for Fraser Forster to dive to his left to deny him.

The former West Brom striker has now missed his last four penalties and his 582-day wait for a goal goes on.

Southampton equalised on 75 minutes when Maya Yoshida rammed the ball home from Shane Long’s flick from Sofiane Boufal’s cross.

Stoke responded and after a melee in the box, Crouch steered home Maxim Choupo-Moting’s effort from close range.

Despite conceding the spot-kick, van Dijk excelled on his first start since January 22, although his attempts to force a move in the summer have not been forgotten as Steven Davis retained the captain’s armband.

Stoke City 2 Southampton 1: Peter Crouch snatches late winner but Saido Berahino’s nightmare goes on

Show/hide article…

Stoke ended their all-competition run of five matches without a win but goal-starved Saido Berahino’s personal nightmare continued with a missed penalty that almost cost his side two points.

Given his first start since the opening day of the season, the former West Bromwich Albion front man, without a goal in senior football since February 2016, grabbed the ball after Virgil van Dijk pulled him down in the box for a 43rd-minute penalty.

It was the perfect opportunity for Berahino to lift the weight from his shoulders by ending his drought.

But the 24-year-old took the spot-kick like a player out of the habit of scoring and Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster read his intentions, diving to his left to make a relatively comfortable save.

In fact, it was the third penalty in a row that Berahino had missed – he failed with two attempts in the same game for West Brom against Watford in April 2016, two months after his last goal.

The Burundi-born player’s form has never recovered fully from his stand-off with West Brom over his blocked move to Tottenham in the summer of 2015.

Stoke 2-1 Southampton: Peter Crouch snatches late winner

Show/hide article…

Peter Crouch’s late winner secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory for Stoke at home to Southampton on Saturday.

Mame Biram Diouf nodded the hosts ahead after 40 minutes before Saido Berahino saw his penalty saved by Fraser Forster.

Virgil van Dijk, making his first Southampton start for eight months, conceded the spot-kick for his challenge on Berahino, who stepped up to miss his fourth successive spot-kick during a goalless drought that stretches back to February 2016.

It looked like the visitors had earned a draw when Maya Yoshida equalised on 75 minutes, but substitute Crouch snatched the three points 10 minutes later with a close-range finish after a goalmouth scramble.

Nathan Redmond and Shane Long earlier squandered good chances for Southampton before the hosts went in front through Diouf - the striker nodding home Xherdan Shaqiri’s excellent delivery to break the deadlock in an even encounter.

They should have doubled their lead three minutes later when Van Dijk brought down Berahino, but the Stoke forward was denied by Forster.

The home side wanted a second spot-kick shortly after half-time when Dusan Tadic appeared to handball Shaqiri’s cross but referee Mike Jones turned down the appeal.

Still, Southampton pressed after the break as Mauricio Pellegrino introduced Sofiane Boufal, Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini and those attacking moves paid off.

Boufal made the difference as his run and cross helped tee up Yoshida, who volleyed home a spectacular leveller.

But the visitors’ joy was short-lived as substitute Crouch turned in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s goalward poke to secure Stoke’s second win of the campaign.

There was still time for Southampton to push forward again and they went close through Gabbiadini and Austin but Stoke held on.

Mark Hughes: "It was important to get the win. We have had some really difficult home games against some top sides and Southampton themselves are a very good side in this league.

“They have finished above us over the last few years so we knew it was another difficult home fixture. We found a way to get maximum points, it was a little bit scruffy towards the end, but Crouchy has come on and made the difference at the top end of the pitch.”

Mauricio Pellegrino: “We were unlucky, we were pushing until the end and we put them under pressure all the time. It’s part of football. They scored two goals and we scored one, we have to learn for the future.”

Phil Thompson: "Berahino picked the ball up for the penalty and was desperate to take it. You think, after all that, he didn’t have the time to settle.

“It was a good save by Forster, but it wasn’t in the corner. Berahino will be kicking himself.”

The on-loan Chelsea defender was ineligible for Stoke’s 4-0 defeat to his parent club last weekend but returned on Saturday to produce a superb display at the heart of the Potters’ defence.

He kept Shane Long in check and put his body on the line on several occasions to deny Southampton’s attackers, especially after the introduction of Gabbiadini and Austin.

With Ryan Shawcross and Bruno Martins Indi absent through injury, it was a vital performance in a crucial win for the hosts.

Stoke face one of their toughest tests of the season next as they travel to Manchester City after the international break.

As for Southampton, they resume at home to Newcastle, live on Sky Sports Premier League.

Peter Crouch’s late strike downs old club Southampton as Stoke end winless run

Show/hide article…

Peter Crouch ended Stoke City’s four-match Premier League run without a win as a Virgil Van Dijk-inspired Southampton lost their unbeaten away record.

Substitute Crouch won it for Stoke five minutes from time when he stabbed home from a yard out to end Saints’ four-match undefeated sequence on the road stretching back to April 25.

Mame Diouf glanced home five minutes before the break to give Mark Hughes’s side a deserved lead.

Diouf’s first goal since May was cancelled out by Maya Yoshida’s 75th-minute volley as Saints drew level after a strong fightback in the second half.

Stoke striker Saido Berahino earned but missed a 43rd-minute penalty on his first start since the opening day of the season as his barren scoring run stretched to 32 games and 582 days.

Stoke made a bright start and created two chances in the first two minutes.

Maxim Choupo-Moting dribbled to the edge of the box in a jinking run only to see his rising drive loop over the bar after a deflection.

Then Joe Allen fired a powerful drive a few inches too high from 20 yards after Diouf teed him up following a partly-cleared corner.

Darren Fletcher was next to be presented with an opportunity and his volley was blocked by the recalled Van Dijk, making his first start of the season after his dispute with the club.

Southampton’s first sight of goal came in the 12th minute when Mario Lemina advanced before curling wide from 25 yards.

But Stoke continued to look dangerous and they forced the first save of the game after a quarter of an hour when Xherdan Shaqiri’s left-foot drive from 12 yards was beaten away by Fraser Forster.

And it took a vital clearance from Ryan Bertrand ahead of Shaqiri to prevent the little Swiss international from putting the Potters ahead in the 23rd minute after Choupo-Moting split the Saints’ defence for Allen to cross.

A minute later though the visitors threatened when Shane Long beat the offside trap after Steve Davis’s free kick had been cleared, and, with a smart shot on the turn, forced the first save from Stoke keeper Jack Butland, who sprinted off his line to parry.

The first flashpoint came on the half hour when Allen was booked for tripping Dusan Tadic, who Stoke claimed caught Choupo-Moting late beforehand.

Stoke carried on probing and Allen and Fletcher had shots blocked by Van Dijk and Bertrand before the hosts took a deserved lead five minutes before the break.

Diouf lost his marker deep inside the six-yard box to glance home Shaqiri’s inswinging corner.

Stoke missed the chance to double their lead in the 43rd minute when Berahino’s penalty was saved by Forster diving to his left after the £12m striker won the spot kick after being pushed by Van Dijk.

It was Berahino’s fourth consecutive miss from the spot, a run which includded two for West Brom against Watford in April 2016.

Southampton, inspired by the promptings of Mario Lemina and Tadic, were the better team for the start of the second half.

They missed two chances to equalise after Geoff Cameron poked his shot straight at Forster from Shaqiri’s cross.

Both fell to Shane Long and both were headers that flew over the bar from right-wing crosses, first from Cedric Soares’s centre then from Tadic’s delivery.

The Saints made two changes in an effort to drag themselves level, as Sofiane Boufal replaced captain Steven Davis on the hour then Nathan Redmond made way for Manolo Gabbiadini seven minutes later.

But despite dominating possession, the visitors were left frustrated by their inability to penetrate a determined Stoke rearguard.

They laboured away but Lemina’s wayward finish high into the stand on 71 minutes was typical of their efforts in front of goal.

Southampton were made to pay for their wastefulness five minutes from time when Crouch stabbed home from a yard out after Choupo-Moting had two efforts blocked following Erik Pieters’s cross.

Saints denied by late Crouch strike

Show/hide article…

Saints headed north unbeaten in four away Premier League matches but were denied what would have been a hard-earned point by Crouch’s late tap-in.

A string of fine saves from Fraser Forster – recalled to the England squad earlier in the week – kept Southampton in the game in the first half either side of Mame Biram Diouf’s headed opener on 40 minutes, the big man clawing out efforts from Xherdan Shaqiri and Maxime Choupo-Moting before palming away Saido Berahino’s penalty.

Southampton - who featured Virgil van Dijk in their backline from the first whistle for the first time since January - improved after the interval and their territorial dominance was rewarded midway through the second half thanks to Yoshida’s crashing volley only for Crouch to bundle home from a yard five minutes from time.

Stoke began the brighter, with Choupo-Moting, Kurt Zouma and Darren Fletcher all drawing well-timed interceptions from the returning van Dijk before Forster produced the first of several fine stops to palm away Xherdan Shaqiri’s close-range shot on the quarter-hour mark.

As it happened, Nathan Redmond might have given Saints the lead with one of the best chances of the half, the winger nudging wide of the target under pressure from the covering Diouf after racing onto Dusan Tadic’s defence-splitting pass.

As the tempo quickened and the game stretched, only goal-saving interceptions from Ryan Bertrand on Shaqiri, Jack Butland on Shane Long and Forster acrobatically once more on Choupo-Moting kept the scores level before Diouf broke the deadlock on 40 minutes.

The Senegalese’s firm header from Shaqiri’s corner put the Potters in front and they may have even doubled their lead within 90 seconds after van Dijk’s trip on Stoke’s number 18 in the penalty area.

Saido Berahino stepped up, Forster superbly denied him to keep his side in contention at half-time.

Two headed chances for Long kicked off a spell of sustained dominance for Pellegrino’s men after the restart with Sofiane Boufal and Manolo Gabbiadini taking the places of Steven Davis and Redmond.

Yoshida smashed superbly past Butland on the volley on 75 minutes followingsome sloppy Stoke defending to drag Saints back into contention only for substitute Crouch to poke into the net inside the six-yard box late on.

Gabbiadini twice went close to salvaging a point in stoppage time but it was not to be for the men in turquoise and black.

We go again after the international break.

Stoke 2-1 Southampton: Crouch strikes to sink Saints

Show/hide article…

Peter Crouch condemned his former club to defeat as he scored the winner five minutes from time as Saints were beaten 2-1 by Stoke in Virgil van Dijk’s first start since January.

Maya Yoshida netted just Saints’ fifth goal of the season with a stunning volley to equalise after Mame Diouf had given Stoke a first half lead moments before Fraser Forster saved a Saido Berahino penalty.

But Crouch’s intervention ensured Mauricio Pellegrino’s men go into the latest international break on the back of one win in their last six matches in all competitions, and two in eight all season.

Van Dijk was in the thick of the action inside the first minute as Maxim Choupo-Moting broke forward down the middle and tried a shot from 20 yards out, with the defender on hand to deflect it wide.

Stoke were trying to start positively and Joe Allen was the next to have a go from distance only to slice over the bar.

Having started playing deep and on the back foot, Saints had a first half chance on eight minutes as a looping ball over the top from deep found Dusan Tadic who tried to help it on its way towards goal but couldn’t find the target.

Mario Lemina had a crack after finding space cutting inside but his right footed shot curled wide of the far post.

Fraser Forster had to come to Saints’ rescue on 15 minutes as Stoke broke quickly. Xherdan Shaqiri produced a neat turn in the area to buy himself a yard for a left footed driven shot but the keeper dived to his right to save.

The game was becoming increasingly open and Saints were the next with a chance as Nathan Redmond was played in by Tadic. He had to try and flick a shot first time under pressure past the keeper but failed to hit the target.

Shane Long tested Jack Butland with a shot on the turn from six yards out after Oriol Romeu had won a second ball from a free kick but the Potters stopper blocked with a low dive from close range.

The theme of chances for both teams continued as Forster again had to save on the half hour mark. It was Choupo-Moting who worked the room for a firm right footed shot from the edge of the area that Forster saved away to his right.

Joe Allen became the first player in the book for a foul on Tadic.

Van Dijk made another vital interception on 38 minutes as he was on hand to make a last ditch sliding challenge to deny Allen before Ryan Bertrand headed over Darren Fletcher’s stinging drive from 20 yards.

However, there was no stopping Stoke from taking the lead on 40 minutes.

It was a very disappointing goal for Saints to concede, coming direct from a set piece.

Shaqiri whipped in an inswinging right wing corner and Mame Diouf was able to make a simple run and break free from his marker and flicked a header home in space on the edge of the six yard box.

Saints got a massive let-off when Forster saved from the penalty spot to prevent them going two down just three minutes later.

Van Dijk hauled down Saido Berahino in the area and Mike Jones had no option but to point to the spot.

Berahino stepped up to take it but his right footed effort was a nice height for Forster who made a good save diving to his left.

Cedric Soares had the last effort of the half with a drive from distance that went wide and at the break Saints were a goal down but still in the game.

Saints were appealing for Allen to be sent off as he flattened Long with a high boot in the opening moments of the second period but referee Jones just awarded a free kick and took no further action.

Forster was in business again on 49 minutes as he blocked at the near post after Romeu directed Shaqiri’s left wing cross towards his own goal.

Tadic picked up a yellow card after several fouls in quick succession.

Long had a great chance to level things up on 54 minutes as Cedric whipped in a terrific right wing cross. The Saints striker rose highest to meet the ball on the edge of the six yard box but headed over the bar.

Romeu was the next booked for dragging back Shaqiri.

Long had a tougher chance back peddling to reach a Tadic cross from the right and couldn’t guide it on target.

Van Dijk was the next to spurn a good opportunity as he was found by Redmond’s outswinging corner but from ten yards out he headed into the ground and wide.

Saints made a first change on 60 minutes with Sofiane Boufal replacing Davis.

That meant sticking with the same system despite Stoke having lost much of their attacking impetus and instead getting men behind the ball and defending deep.

Pellegrino brought on Manolo Gabbiadini for Redmond on 67 minutes with Long dropping deeper.

Stoke responded with Peter Crouch coming on for Berahino.

With Stoke showing no ambition whatsoever the challenge was there for Saints. They had almost all of the possession but needed to find a way to break through a packed Potters defensive action.

There was occasional space out wide due to Stoke’s three at the back policy, but the numbers dropping deep were meaning even that was start to become less.

Saints did make the breakthrough and levelled the scores on 75 minutes through an unlikely source.

It was a scrappy build-up as Bofual’s deflected cross was sliced on by Long but the finish was sublime as Yoshida produced a remarkable acrobatic volley from eight yards out to fire in a shot in via the underside of the bar.

Lemina made a superb sliding tackle to deny Choupo-Moting as Stoke suddenly decided they might need to push forward again.

Yoshida almost got another one as he slid in at the far post to meet a deep free kick but from a difficult angle he found the side netting.

There was a sting in the tail for Saints though as one of their former players scored against them five minutes from time.

Forster saved with his legs from Choupo-Moting after Erik Pieters’ cut back but Stoke managed to work the ball back into Crouch who turned home from close range.

Saints appealed for offside but replays suggested the linesman was correct not to raise his flag and they were left chasing the game again.

They came close as Gabbiadini couldn’t make to contact with Bertrand’s cross while Austin bundled the ball past Butland but Kurt Zouma cleared off the line.

There was plenty of chaos in what proved to be about eight minutes of added time but Saints couldn’t find another goal and went home empty handed.

Stoke City 2-1 Southampton: Peter Crouch sinks former club

Show/hide article…

Sitting on the bench and cursing the latest traumatic episode of his young career, Saido Berahino must have afforded himself a rueful smile.

Having missed a penalty, Berahino then watched on as Peter Crouch, the 36-year-old who replaced him 70 minutes into this game, turned a tap-in into an empty goal with just five minutes to spare.

Crouch’s goal was a gift from pointblank range and what Berahino, still only 24, would give for a chance so straightforward.

‘Crouchy is invaluable,’ Stoke boss Mark Hughes said. ‘It wasn’t a big decision to renew his deal this summer. If he continues like this, we will have a similar discussion sometimes next year. I played until I was 38. He trains every single day with the other lads and competes.’

For poor Berahino, we are now entering that desperate stage of a goalscoring crisis where figures are broken down and historical landmarks are recalled.

582 days, 13,969 hours and over 50 million seconds have now passed since Berahino last scored a competitive goal.

That strike, scored in the colours of West Brom against Crystal Palace in February 2016, arrived in the heady days when Brexit remained a pipe dream or the stuff of sweat soaked nightmares, depending on one’s allegiances, Donald Trump was a TV personality rather than the US President and Roy Hogdson carried the hopes of a nation as the England manager.

Here, at last, Berahino must have thought his moment had come. Stoke were 1-0 up already through Mame Biram Diouf’s simple header from a Xherdan Shaqiri corner when Berahino began to run at the returning Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman, playing for the first time since January after a serious injury and extended transfer saga, flung out an arm and Berahino fell to ground. The striker immediately reached for the ball.

As he placed it down, the goal opened like the arms of a lover; and then closed once more with the snap of a venus fly tap as goalkeeper Fraser Forster sprawled across his line to make the save. Remarkably, it was the fourth time Berahino has missed from the spot since he last scored a goal.

From the player who cannot score to the team who cannot score, Southampton were inhibited once more here. Southampton had scored only two goals in seven fixtures so far this season. The slump is worse at home, where Southampton have failed to score in nine of their past 10 matches.

Here, however, they appeared to have brought their troubles along with them. Their play is pleasant enough but a cutting edge is absent. This is a long-term malaise and the sight of £67.8m worth of talent on the Southampton bench, including Charlie Austin, Manolo Gabbiadini and Sofiane Boufal, is a reminder that this is club with loftier ambitions than a low mid-table finish.

Nathan Redmond spurned a clear opening in the first-half, scuffing wide and in the second-half, Shane Long headed over twice in quick succession.

Maya Yoshida soon stepped up to the plate, as he acrobatically turned in a neat move involving Boufal and Long.

Southampton fans, delirious by the sight of the ball in the opponents goal, excitedly crowed on repeat: 'We’ve scored a goal…"

For a while, they dared to dream of a two-goal bonanza. Southampton appeared the likelier side.

Yet as Stoke broke away, Eric Pieters raided down the left flank and after Maxim Choupo-Moting’s was twice denied by Forster, Crouch was there to turn home a winner.
