Redmond still targeting England World Cup spot

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond admits he has had a tricky start to the season with Saints but has not given up hope of playing his way into England’s World Cup squad.

Redmond missed the decisive spot-kick as England Under-21s lost in the European Championship semi-finals to Germany, with his involvement in the tournament also delaying his return to Saints and new manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

The 23-year-old has not lowered his sights, though, challenging himself to excel for the club in the coming months and catch the eye of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

Redmond made his senior debut from the bench against Germany in March but faces stiff competition for a place.

“I had a tough summer with England, a bit of a personal thing there with missing the penalty,” he said.

"So I had some things to overcome in the summer, coming up late to pre-season I had a lot of catching up to do with fitness and work and getting to know the manager. It has been one of those with a new manager, new environment, new way of working and in those respects it has been quite tough but it is something that I’m learning through.

"I’ve felt a bit more better recently but football is about confidence for a lot of players and I’m certainly one of them.

“Ever since me and Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse) got called up by England it has given me that extra motivation to do that (make the World Cup) but that isn’t going to happen unless my performances for Southampton improve. That is the first thing that needs to happen.”

Given Southgate’s previous job was with the under-21s, there has been an increasingly youthful look to the national side with a series of Young Lions graduates handed important roles.

And the make-up of the squad gives Redmond belief he can be next.

“It is a weird feeling playing with the seniors. It’s the team you have watched your whole life but then again I’ve played with lots of players in the younger age groups,” he said.

“Guys like Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Jack Butland - there are so many players I have played with in the younger ages so to see how they’ve done it, it just makes me go ‘wow, they’re actually doing it’ and there is that same hope and chance for me so that has spurred me on. How I do for Southampton will determine that.”

Prince William makes Davis an MBE

Show/hide article…

SAINTS captain Steven Davis was made an MBE for his services to football by Prince William at Buckingham Palace.

The 32-year-old attended a ceremony at the palace today, where the Duke of Cambridge, the president of the Football Association, handed him the accolade.

He said to receive the MBE was an “honour that I will cherish”.

“I think to get it in any given field is huge, and obviously to still be playing as well, it’s unbelievable. It’s nothing I ever expected, to be honest,” he said.

During a professional career that has spanned more than 14 years, Davis has become one of the most capped players in Northern Irish history, and is set to make his 100th appearance in the World Cup play-offs in November.

Speaking ahead of the two-legged tie against Switzerland that will determine if the Northern Irish reach the final in Russia, Davis said: “It’s going to be a difficult game but there’s a lot of belief within the squad, and it’s two games for us to get to the World Cup so we will be giving it our all.”

Last summer, the midfielder captained his country to their first major tournament in more than 30 years at Euro 2016, where Michael O’Neill’s side impressively reached the second round.

After a recent World Cup qualifier win over Azerbaijan he clocked 95 games for the national team, joining David Healy as the third-highest capped Northern Ireland international ever.

Having also played for Aston Villa, Fulham and Scottish giants Rangers, Davis has been a lynchpin for Saints since his arrival in 2012, making 205 appearances in all competitions.

He has now been rewarded by being made an MBE for his contribution to the game.

NI captain Davis receives MBE

Show/hide article…

The midfielder who led his country to the last-16 stage in the European Championships, was awarded the honour in recognition of his services to football.

When Davis, who plays his club football at Southampton, was told back in June that he was in line for the award, he said he was “honoured and humbled”.

If he features in the World Cup play-offs against Switzerland next month, the 32-year-old will become only the third Northern Ireland player to win 100 caps for his country - the other two being defender Aaron Hughes and legendary goalkeeper Pat Jennings.

Speaking ahead of the two-legged tie that will determine if the Northern Irish reach the World Cup in Russia, Davis said, “It’s going to be a difficult game but there’s a lot of belief within the squad, and it’s two games for us to get to the World Cup so we will be giving it our all.”
