Hesketh excited to be back

Show/hide article…

The midfielder played 70 minutes for Southampton Under-23s on Monday night, as they were beaten 1-0 at Staplewood by Brighton, in Premier League 2.

It was Hesketh’s second game back after spending six months out with a hamstring injury, having also featured in the first half of the 6-2 home win over Newcastle two weeks ago.

With Saints having to play most of the game against Brighton with ten men, following an early red card for Jan Bednarek, Hesketh felt the additional exertion required to cope with being shorthanded was no bad thing for him.

“It’s a long time to be out and it’s very frustrating sitting and watching everyone train and play, so to be back in and around it is really exciting,” he said.

"It’s really nice. Obviously, personally, I’m really happy to be back. It’s been frustrating – whatever it was, six or six-and-a-half months – to be out sitting and watching, but to be back playing is really nice.

“My first game, against Newcastle, was a lot easier than this one as such, but a different challenge obviously benefited me more physically and I think I got a lot from it.”

The 21-year-old added: "I feel really good. I was a bit tired towards the end of the game, but when I’m training and playing I feel myself fitness-wise. There’s maybe a bit of rustiness here and there, but that’s slowly going away and hopefully I’ll be back fully flowing in a couple of weeks.

“The plan is to play 90 minutes next week. We’re keeping it slow at the moment, so I won’t be playing two games in a week right now. I’m just building myself back up and once I get the full 90 minutes and get training every day then that will come with time.”

Connolly goal clinches win for Brighton

Show/hide article…

Aaron Connolly scored the only goal as Brighton & Hove Albion beat 10-man Southampton 1-0 to end a run of six Division 2 matches without victory.

The half-time substitute scored with a half-volley in the 56th minute to secure the Seagulls’ third win of the season, in front of first-team manager Chris Hughton.

Southampton had Jan Bednarek sent off in the 13th minute, following his challenge on Soufyan Ahannach.

Brighton have moved up to seventh place, behind Southampton on goal difference.

Sead Kolasinac and Leroy Sane lead Fantasy Football team of the week

Show/hide article…

We look at which players made the Sky Sports Fantasy Football XI at the weekend, after the majority of popular picks failed to deliver.

None of the league’s 35 most popular players make the line-up, with Leroy Sane, in 7.21 per cent of sides, representing the most selected player to make it into the team.

Here’s a look at the best performers of the week…

The England international has been subjected to criticism since the beginning of the season, but produced a fantastic display against Crystal Palace despite conceding twice. He produced a weekend high of seven saves and earned the Sky Sports man-of-the-match award against the Eagles, although it was not enough to see West Ham hold on for the win.

After Huddersfield shocked Manchester United, the pressure was on Liverpool to not slip up, and Moreno helped make sure of that with an assured display at left-back. The Spaniard earned bonus points for tackling (two successful tackles) and passing (79 completed passes) as they eased to a 3-0 win.

Gomez was another key defender in Liverpool’s victory as he continued to cement his place in Jurgen Klopp’s backline. The 20-year-old earned bonuses for 102 completed passes and a clean sheet. It was also the fourth time he has hit double figures for Sky Sports Fantasy Football points in a game, although all of his successful performances have come at Anfield, with just five points earned away from home.

Stoke stunned high-flying Watford with a 1-0 victory and Shawcross was at the heart of their performance. The 30-year-old played a key role in the centre of the Potters’ back three, and earned the man-of-the-match award for his part in just their second clean sheet of the season.

The Bosnian provided the 6.51 per cent of Sky Sports Fantasy Football bosses who selected him with a stellar display, becoming the player of the weekend with 20 points. Kolasinac equalised for Arsenal and then assisted Aaron Ramsey’s winner, while also earning a passing bonus and inevitably the Sky Sports man-of-the-match award.

After an injury-blighted start to the season, Hazard is finally showing the form he is capable of. The Belgian scored the only goal of the game with a tidy finish against Bournemouth, securing the man-of-the-match award in the process. The 26-year-old also made seven key passes in the game but was not rewarded with an assist as his team-mates failed to add to his effort.

Liverpool’s utility man pretty much ticked every box with his performance on Saturday, racking up bonus points for tackles and passes, while providing an assist as well. That saw him secure the Sky Sports man-of-the-match award, doubling his tally for the season in the process.

Gray stole the show against Everton, collecting the ball in his own half, producing a mazy run up the pitch that allowed Riyad Mahrez to assist Jamie Vardy for the opener. The 21-year-old then found the back of the net, thanks in large part to a calamitous mistake from Jonjoe Kenny, to make sure of the victory.

Manchester City continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-2 victory over West Brom, and Fernandinho was right at the heart of it. The Brazilian made 114 successful passes, assisted Leroy Sane on the opening goal and got on the scoresheet himself. The tenacious midfielder collected the man-of-the-match award to cap off a brilliant performance.

Leroy Sane is arguably one of the in-form players in the Premier League right now, scoring four goals in his last five games. He has also provided five assists, scoring 52 Sky Sports Fantasy Football points in that time. The German has become a regular under Pep Guardiola, and he continued to show his class against West Brom, scoring the opener and assisting Fernandinho’s strike.

In what was a poor week for strikers in Sky Sports Fantasy Football, Jay Rodriguez makes the team of the week courtesy of his modest valuation. The West Brom forward was joint with four other strikers: Jamie Vardy (£11.2m), Daniel Sturridge (£11.1m), Roberto Firmino (£10.6m) and Javier Hernandez (£10.7m). All five scored a goal but were still outscored by six goalkeepers in a weekend where strikers were goal-shy.

Manchester City dominate ’ Premier League Power Rankings

Show/hide article…

Manchester City winger Leroy Sane has topped the Sky Sports Power Rankings and is joined by three team-mates in the top 10.

City won their eighth successive league game with a 3-2 win at West Brom on Saturday, extending their remarkable goal tally to 35 scored from 10 games.

Holding midfielder Fernandinho (No 2, up 14 places) assisted Sane’s opener and the Brazil international struck from range to restore City’s lead before Raheem Sterling (No 9, up six places) netted his seventh league goal this term.

Team-mate Kevin De Bruyne (No 7, down four places) retained his place among the top performers, despite failing to score or create an assist at The Hawthorns.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane topped the chart last week but slipped two places to No 3 after missing Spurs’ 1-0 defeat to Manchester United with a hamstring injury.

Arsenal came from behind to win for the third successive game in all competitions during a 2-1 victory over Swansea, with match-winner Aaron Ramsey (No 4, up 17 places) scoring his third goal of the campaign.

Burnley moved up to seventh in the Premier League after a 1-0 win over Newcastle, with stopper Nick Pope (No 6, up 20 places) keeping his third clean sheet since replacing the injured Tom Heaton.

Stoke’s Mame Biram Diouf engaged in a match-high 20 duels during a 1-0 win at Watford after scoring in each of his previous three games, while Chelsea’s Eden Hazard soared to No 8 after netting the winner at Bournemouth.

Fernandinho and Arsenal’s Sead Kolasinac recorded the highest number of points from matchday 10, while Demarai Gray fired 207 places up the chart after scoring during Leicester’s 2-0 win against Everton.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance over the last five matchdays by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.

The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every week during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…

Lovren ‘sickened’ by death threats

Show/hide article…

Former Southampton centre half Dejan Lovren has branded death threats made against his family as “disgusting”.

The Liverpool and Croatia defender - in the news of late after questionable performances - shared the threat on his Instagram story.

Lovren posted a direct message he had received from a user which read “I’m gonna murder ur family u Croatian p_*_*”.

The 28-year-old captioned it with “horrible what kind of people we have” before adding in a second image: "I don’t mind when people talk s_*_ about me, it says more about them!

“But I cannot ignore when my family is threatened. I just can’t and won’t accept that. Disgusting.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp last week defended his player after substituting him just 31 minutes into a 4-1 loss at Tottenham.

The performance drew heavy criticism and Klopp said: "I don’t wish one of you to have your mistakes discussed in public. You cannot even imagine how it feels.

"The boys are in the first place still human beings but you look like you are watching an accident and you are the kind of people standing around with smartphones instead of helping. I’m not this kind of person.

"We had a normal week. Of course it’s not the nicest week in Dejan’s life but it’s only football. People don’t become a better or a worse person through making a mistake in a football game.

“If I think about Dejan, I have much more positive things than negative things.”

‘My performances must improve’: Redmond confident of a World Cup spot

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond admits he has had a tricky start to the season with Southampton but has not given up hope of breaking into England’s World Cup squad.

Redmond missed the decisive spot-kick as England Under 21 lost in the European Championship semi finals to Germany, with his involvement in the tournament also delaying his return to Saints and their new manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

The 23-year-old has not lowered his sights, though, challenging himself to excel for the club in the coming months and catch the eye of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

Redmond made his senior debut from the bench against Germany in March but faces stiff competition for a place.

‘I had a tough summer with England, a bit of a personal thing there with missing the penalty,’ he said.

'So I had some things to overcome in the summer, coming up late to pre-season I had a lot of catching up to do with fitness and work and getting to know the manager.

'It has been one of those with a new manager, new environment, new way of working and in those respects it has been quite tough but it is something that I’m learning through.

'I’ve felt a bit better recently but football is about confidence for a lot of players and I’m certainly one of them.

‘Ever since me and Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse) got called up by England it has given me that extra motivation to do that (make the World Cup) but that isn’t going to happen unless my performances for Southampton improve. That is the first thing that needs to happen.’

Given Southgate’s previous job was with the under 21, there has been an increasingly youthful look to the national side with a series of Young Lions graduates handed important roles.

And the make-up of the squad gives Redmond belief he can be next to be given an opportunity.

‘It is a weird feeling playing with the seniors. It’s the team you have watched your whole life but then again I’ve played with lots of players in the younger age groups,’ he said.

‘Guys like Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Jack Butland - there are so many players I have played with in the younger ages so to see how they’ve done it, it just makes me go ‘wow, they’re actually doing it’ and there is that same hope and chance for me so that has spurred me on. How I do for Southampton will determine that.’

Prince William makes Davis an MBE

Show/hide article…

SAINTS captain Steven Davis was made an MBE for his services to football by Prince William at Buckingham Palace.

The 32-year-old attended a ceremony at the palace today, where the Duke of Cambridge, the president of the Football Association, handed him the accolade.

He said to receive the MBE was an “honour that I will cherish”.

“I think to get it in any given field is huge, and obviously to still be playing as well, it’s unbelievable. It’s nothing I ever expected, to be honest,” he said.

During a professional career that has spanned more than 14 years, Davis has become one of the most capped players in Northern Irish history, and is set to make his 100th appearance in the World Cup play-offs in November.

Speaking ahead of the two-legged tie against Switzerland that will determine if the Northern Irish reach the final in Russia, Davis said: “It’s going to be a difficult game but there’s a lot of belief within the squad, and it’s two games for us to get to the World Cup so we will be giving it our all.”

Last summer, the midfielder captained his country to their first major tournament in more than 30 years at Euro 2016, where Michael O’Neill’s side impressively reached the second round.

After a recent World Cup qualifier win over Azerbaijan he clocked 95 games for the national team, joining David Healy as the third-highest capped Northern Ireland international ever.

Having also played for Aston Villa, Fulham and Scottish giants Rangers, Davis has been a lynchpin for Saints since his arrival in 2012, making 205 appearances in all competitions.

He has now been rewarded by being made an MBE for his contribution to the game.
