Saints assess Lemina injury

Show/hide article…

Saints are likely to be without midfield powerhouse Mario Lemina for this weekend’s crunch clash with Burnley at St Mary’s, but are hopeful he will be fit to return after the next international break.

Lemina was forced out of the 1-1 draw with Brighton at the Amex with an ankle injury sustained in training last week.

Though the damage is understood to not be too serious, Lemina is not currently being considered for the visit of Burnley.

Helpfully that is the last game before the next international break, with Saints not playing again until November 18 when they travel to Liverpool.

It is hoped that Lemina will be ready for a return at Anfield, which marks the start of a busy run of fixtures.

Mauricio Pellegrino will be desperate to have Lemina in top condition for that period of matches, which sees Saints play all of the Premier League’s top six before the turn of the year, with five of those games being away from home.

With that in mind, Saints know they really need to convert another home game into a win when the Clarets come to town.

Though Burnley have risen to seventh in the Premier League table, they still represent a decent chance for Saints to put another three points on the board.

Pellegrino will have another tricky decision to make in terms of his team selection and who to play in the heart of midfield in Lemina’s absence.

He started at Brighton with Oriol Romeu playing the anchoring midfield role alone in what was more akin to a 4-1-4-1 formation.

That changed somewhat during the game, with Romeu playing alongside Steven Davis and latterly substitute Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in a more traditional 4-2-3-1 style formation.

Playing at home Pellegrino is likely to want to go with a more attacking line-up, which suggests he could start with a 4-2-3-1, which leaves him several options.

He could play Davis in the deeper role, potentially freeing up a more attacking spot for another player, potentially Nathan Redmond, who was on the bench with Sofiane Boufal not really able to take his chance after a recall to the side, or Shane Long.

The Republic of Ireland international was dropped with Pellegrino concerned over the lack of another strike option to use from the bench with Charlie Austin out injured and Manolo Gabbiadini playing through the middle.

Hojbjerg’s late cameo at the Amex was his first minutes of the season, and he will be hoping to get a start under Pellegrino this weekend.

James Ward-Prowse can also play a slightly deeper role if Pellegrino doesn’t want to use him in a more attacking right sided position.

Celtic’s Kieran Tierney among Britain’s best full-backs - Brendan Rodgers

Show/hide article…

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers says he rates Kieran Tierney alongside Danny Rose and Ryan Bertrand as Britain’s best full-backs.

Rodgers praised Tierney’s performance in opposition to Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben in Celtic’s 2-1 defeat.

“I’ve worked with who I consider to be the two best full-backs in Britain - Danny Rose at Watford and Ryan Bertrand at Chelsea,” said Rodgers.

“And Kieran is right up there with those boys.”

Rose, 27, now at Tottenham Hotspur, and Southampton mainstay Bertrand, 28, are both experienced England internationals.

But Rodgers believes that Scotland left-back Tierney, who a day earlier had signed a new six-year contract, is not yet the finished article.

“He’s still very young, still got bits of improvement to make, but his quality, will, determination and focus is outstanding,” he said.

"He loves playing at Celtic and nights like this you can see why. He’s a real special talent who is focused on improving.

“He’s a really special player. For 20, to play at that composure - first and foremost, he’s a defender.”

Celtic’s loss in Glasgow means Rodgers’ side cannot reach the knock-out stages, but striker Leigh Griffiths believes the Scottish champions proved they are good enough to compete with Europe’s best.

“They were poor goals,” he said. "It’s cost us dearly, but everybody saw that we can play at this level.

"On our day, we can run anybody close.

“We just need to take that kind of performance over to PSG and hopefully try and frustrate them for a long period of time.”

Celtic are favourites to clinch third place in Group B and drop into the Europa League and Griffiths believes that will be a job well done.

“Our aim at the start of the season was to be in European football after Christmas,” he said.

“As long as we don’t get beat from Anderlecht at home we should progress.”

Meanwhile, Moussa Dembele, who started the game ahead of Griffiths, also thought Celtic proved they could compete with the tournament’s top sides.

“It was a good game from both teams,” he said. "This game is just about small details and today we concede two easy goals and that’s cost us the game.

"We can’t give these players these kind of chances.

"We showed that we have the desire and the quality as well to be in this competition. We just have to keep doing it again now.

“We made it tough for them and we showed our quality.”

Celtic travel to group leaders Paris St-Germain on 22 November and end the group campaign at home to Anderlecht on 5 December.

Kieran Tierney ‘right up there’ with Danny Rose, Ryan Bertrand - Rodgers

Show/hide article…

Boss Brendan Rodgers described Kieran Tierney as a “special talent” following his display in Celtic’s 2-1 defeat by Bayern Munich at Parkhead on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old left-back, who came through the Hoops’ youth academy, signed a new six-year contract on Monday.

Tierney held his own against Bayern’s experienced stand-in skipper Arjen Robben, although the Scottish champions came up short in a pulsating Champions League encounter after goals from Kingsley Coman and Javi Martinez cancelled out Callum McGregor’s leveller, for a result that means Celtic cannot progress in the competition.

Rodgers said: "Kieran Tierney was up against Arjen Robben and he was outstanding again.

"I had Danny Rose as a young player at Watford and I worked with Ryan Bertrand at Chelsea.

"And Kieran is right up there with those boys.

"He is still very young and those boys are into their latter twenties. He still has bits of improvements to make but his quality, his will, his determination and his focus for a young player is outstanding and he loves playing for Celtic.

"And nights like that, you can see why he wanted to sign here.

“A real special talent but a boy who is focused in improvement.”

Rodgers had no doubt that Tierney’s fellow defender Dedryck Boyata was to blame for the opening goal.

The Belgium centre-back hesitated and let a long punt from Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich go over his head.

Coman was on to the ball in a flash and rounded keeper Craig Gordon, who had rushed outside his box, before slipping the ball past the backtracking Boyata, Bitton and Mikael Lustig, with the Hoops claiming the Bayern attacker had used an arm to control the ball.

The Northern Irishman was not sure if there had been an infringement and was more concerned by how easily his defence was breached.

He said: "We have got to deal with it, as simple as that.

"We put good pressure on their keeper and our defensive line is good.

"So we have to head it. It is as simple as that.

"That at least gives him the chance.

“When their keeper kicks it, you want your goalkeeper high, your defence is in a good line, so head it.”

The midfielder curled in an unstoppable free-kick to give the Baggies the lead.

Kevin De Bruyne played the perfect pass for the German winger to score in the rout.

The Ghanaian fired in a rocket of a shot from 20 yards that the 'keeper couldn’t get near.

A touch of class allowed the Brazilian to powerfully send a 20-yard shot into the top corner.

Heurelho Gomes was left helpless as Pedro opened the scoring from distance.

The Gunner completed the scoring in style at Goodison Park.

The attacker finally showed what he was capable of with a solo stunner, as he dribbled from his own half to score the decisive goal.

A rare goal for the Brazilian, but it was certainly worth the wait as the midfielder smashed the ball beyond Jack Butland from 25 yards.

Dyche delight at Cork form

Show/hide article…

Sean Dyche feels former Saints midfielder Jack Cork is relishing being the main man at Burnley after a summer switch from Swansea.

The 28-year-old was instrumental in the Clarets’ 1-0 victory over Newcastle on Monday night that moved Dyche’s side up to seventh on his fifth anniversary as boss.

Cork, who played more 150 times for Saints over two spells at the club, has been an ever-present in the division having been brought to Turf Moor this summer for a fee that could rise up to £10m, and has covered more ground than any other top-flight player across the ten games.

Having perhaps been overshadowed by others at previous, Dyche believes the ex-Chelsea trainee now has a platform to showcase his talent.

“I think he’s enjoying his football, enjoying the group,” Dyche said, ahead of his side’s visit to St Mary’s at the weekend.

"I liked him, obviously, before we bought him, but his game knowledge and his understanding of the Premier League probably shines more with us because he’s a main player and looks like a main player.

"He looks like he has an importance level and handles that really well. He’s adapted into the group almost seamlessly.

“I thought he was terrific again.”

Alongside Cork, Belgian midfielder Steven Defour has been reborn after a largely disappointing first season in England.

His international manager Roberto Martinez was in attendance at Turf Moor to witness a player he has not used in over a year, with Defour’s evening ended by a groin strain that makes him a doubt for Burnley’s final game before the international break against Southampton.

“He’s got a tight groin and we managed to get him off pretty quick,” Dyche added.

"We try and be as diligent with injuries as we can. We have ultimate trust in the players and if he’s saying he’s got a tight groin then he has to come off. They know their bodies and we want that kind of professionalism.

“It’s not easy for a player to do that but he’s old enough and wise enough to know the difference. He’s come off quickly and we hope that settles down. He’s a good player.”

Northern Ireland skipper Steven Davis receives MBE at Palace

Show/hide article…

Southampton and Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis spoke of his delight after receiving his MBE at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

Davis was presented with his medal by the Duke of Cambridge, who is president of the Football Association.

The 32-year-old, from Cullybackey in County Antrim, said it was an “honour that I will cherish” to be made an MBE at such a point in his career.

“I think to get it in any given field is huge,” Davis said.

“To still be playing as well, it is unbelievable. It is nothing I ever expected, to be honest.”

Speaking ahead of the two-legged tie against Switzerland in November that will determine if Northern Ireland reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Davis added: "It is going to be a difficult game but there is a lot of belief within the squad.

“It is two games for us to get to the World Cup so we will be giving it our all.”

Davis said the proudest moment of his career so far had been playing in the Euro 2016 tournament in France.
