Jaïdi: Standards need to be maintained

Show/hide article…

Jaïdi’s youngsters are preparing for three fixtures, in three different competitions, in the upcoming eight days, and the Saints coach has talked us through their hectic schedule and preparation routine as the games near.

“We always make sure that the boys recover well,” he began. "We have a good setup here. The boys have staff and facilities at their disposal, to make sure they are ready for the next three games.

"Surely it will be a different message each game, the Premier League Cup games are obviously different to Checkatrade Trophy fixtures. But mainly we want the players to understand that the standards need to be maintained, individually and collectively. That will make us win games.

“It is a home game, we want to lead from the front in terms of creating chances. Lately, we have been missing opportunities, not effective enough in the final third, so the concentration in training has been on controlling the game and finishing chances.”

Asked about the potential for an experienced starting XI at Staplewood tonight, Jaïdi remained reserved in his response: “The one thing I know is that our 23s boys will be ready!”

Yeovil to appeal against Saints starlet’s first sending off

Show/hide article…

YEOVIL Town are appealing against the first red card of Olufela Olomola’s career after the Saints star’s latest goal for the League Two club.

Olomola netted the seventh goal of his loan spell in the 27th minute as Yeovil beat Stevenage 3-0 at Huish Park on Saturday.

He tapped in the second from inside the area after midfielder Otis Khan broke clear and passed to the unmarked Saints loanee.

Olomola’s goal was sandwiched by a brace from AFC Bournemouth’s Sam Surridge, as Yeovil scored all their goals before half-time.

But the 20 year-old’s 14th appearance for the club was overshadowed by his sending off during the goalless second half.

Olomola was given a straight red card in the 63rd minute after referee Chris Sarginson decided that he had kicked out at Stevenage defender Joe Martin.

The incident sparked a mass brawl involving both sets of players, which resulted in a red card for Keith Toner, Stevenage’s on-loan Aston Villa defender.

Yeovil finished the game with nine men after veteran defender Francois Zoko was sent off for a high foot in the 82nd minute.

But Yeovil are still hopeful that Olomola’s three-match ban will be overturned.

Should that be the case, he will be available for Saturday’s FA Cup first-round tie against Southend United.

Otherwise, he will also miss league matches against Carlisle and Swindon.

Appealing the decision carries the risk of Olomola’s ban being extended to a fourth game - against current League Two leaders Notts County - if the FA panel deems it to be ‘frivolous’.

Yeovil Town manager Darren Way told somersetlive: “I think it was one of those situations where Fela got in a tussle.

“The referee decided not to blow the whistle and then before you know it you’ve got two players on the ground and everyone running at them but I think, if you give that a little bit earlier you don’t see that.

“I was more disappointed that there were a lot of staff, certainly from an official’s point of view.

“You had the fourth official and the linesman and the referee and they still got it wrong, so that’s disappointing.

“But I want to focus on the positives which was a great performance.

“The team was fantastic. We played very, very well.”

U23s Report: Saints 0-1 Brighton

Show/hide article…

The home side were disadvantaged early on, when Jan Bednarek saw red for a last ditch tackle, and a succession of late chances went begging for Saints, with Sam McQueen unlucky to be twice denied.

A man down, the hosts navigated the first-half well, despite suffering an early setback when Bednarek was shown an untimely red card in the 14th minute.

The centre-half was adjudged to have illegally obstructed the run of Soufyan Ahannach as the Dutchman charged towards Alex McCarthy’s goal, and the referee elected to contentiously dismiss the Polish defender, where perhaps a caution would have been just punishment.

The visitors, watched by first-team manager Chris Hughton, were getting joy in the wide areas, as fullback pairing George Cox and Ales Mateju were invited forward by midfield architect Beram Kayal.

Taking advantage of the extra man, Brighton enjoyed much of the first-half possession, with Connor Goldson blasting over from eight yards in the 18th minute and Henrik Bjordal with a second identical chance to edge the visitors in front moments later.

The Norwegian’s shot was charged down by a dogged Saints rearguard, who were forced to reshuffle after the sending off, with captain Alfie Jones filling the void in the backline.

Set-piece specialist James Tilley tested McCarthy from a free-kick midway through the half, but the 'keeper was equal to it, parrying to his right, before a brief spell of Saints pressure gifted McQueen a rare opportunity at the opposing end.

Deployed in a more attaching role, the winger was well found by lone target man Jonathan Afolabi, before unleashing a shot at a comfortable height for Nikki Manepaa, who duly palmed to safety.

Deadlock at the break, McCarthy had to be alert as the two side’s reemerged, saving from Tilley, who tried his luck from distance, before Saints’ gritty resistance was shattered by substitute Connolly.

Introduced at the interval, the Irishman pounced upon a bouncing ball in the area, before lashing home ruthlessly, to make good on Brighton’s dominance. Max Sanders asked further questions of McCarthy’s credentials on the hour mark, to which the ex-Crystal Palace stopper found adequate response.

Hampered by the first-half sending off, Saints were unable to penetrate an organised Seagulls outfit, who used the benefit of an extra man to dictate possession throughout.

Saints’ liveliest threat McQueen attempted to rescue a point in the closing stages, after teasing an effort wide, before calling Manepaa in to action, but couldn’t make the necessary breakthrough.

Jaïdi proud of his players

Show/hide article…

Saints were edged out 1-0 by their Albion counterparts in Premier League 2 at Staplewood, after losing Jan Bednarek to a controversial red card in the 14th minute, with the defender judged to have committed a foul as the last man.

Jaïdi’s side performed impressively despite the disadvantage, and created some good opportunities, but they were ultimately undone by a stunning strike from Brighton substitute Aaron Connolly shortly after half-time.

“I told the boys they should be proud of their performance, despite the result, which was due to many aspects,” said Jaïdi. "One of them which was the referee’s decision. I’m not sure about it, so I’ll have a look. But, overall, I think we started well.

"It (the red card) ruined a little bit our game, but I think the performance was spot on from the boys, in terms of how they handled it, how they showed a good mentality and spirit and how they handled the challenge.

"If we played with 11 we could have been more in balance and more of a threat up front and probably scored more goals and created more chances than what we saw in the game.

"That probably would be the difference, and it’s really important, because it could be three points for us. But, as I said, this is part of the game and part of the learning experience for some of them.

“There are a lot of positives to take from tonight. First of all the mentality the boys showed in this game and hopefully if we take that to our next game – and any game – we will win it.”

Ward-Prowse hopes England’s U17 world champions get Premier League opportunities

Show/hide article…

JAMES Ward-Prowse hopes England’s Under-17 World Cup winners get the opportunities he has had with Saints.

The midfielder celebrates his 23rd birthday tomorrow but has already made 180 appearances for Saints, including 144 in the Premier League.

Ward-Prowse, who made his Saints debut when he was still only 16, hopes the England U17 players that overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat Spain 5-2 in Saturday’s final, seven of whom are at Chelsea or Manchester City, will get similar opportunities in the top flight.

“We watched the last half hour as we were travelling to Brighton,” said the former England U21 captain, who also played for England at U17, U19 and U20 level.

“Everyone had an interest in it and to see them win it the way they did was great. It takes courage to come back from 2-0 down.

"So to get five goals - and the quality of the goals - as well … to see them all celebrating you could see how much it meant to them.

“Overall it’s been a great summer for English football with the seniors qualifying for the World Cup and the younger age-group sides doing well.

“Hopefully these players get chances in their respective clubs’ first teams and they can improve the great [England] squad we’ve already got.”

Manchester City’s Phil Foden was rightly lauded after scoring twice in the final before receiving the Golden Ball award for being the player of the tournament.

“He’s obviously done well in the tournament, hopefully he goes back to his club and gets a chance there as well,” added Ward-Prowse, who was still only 17 when he made his Premier League debut at Manchester City five years ago.

He soon provided a reminder of his dead-ball ability after being recalled at Brighton.

Seven minutes into his first Premier League game for more than a month, Ward-Prowse’s free kick hit the post before being headed in by Steven Davis.

“It was nice to contribute towards the first goal, I was just disappointed we couldn’t keep up our early dominance and take all three points,” he added.

“We didn’t quite stay on the front foot, we dropped back after getting the goal.

"But it’s not the worst result and we have a chance to get some momentum against Burnley.”
