January transfer window: Which Premier League clubs spent the most?

January transfer window: Which Premier League clubs spent the most?

Premier League clubs spent a record £446.2m during the January transfer window - but how much did your team spend?

The total expenditure almost doubled the previous winter record of £225m set in 2011, while Arsenal, Brighton, Huddersfield, Liverpool, Manchester City, Southampton and Swansea all set new transfer fee records.

Liverpool, spent the most this January with an outlay of £75.2m, having signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75m and Tony Gallacher from Falkirk for £200,000.

Arsenal were the next biggest spenders with £61.8m spent, parting £60m for Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, in addition to PAS Giannina defender Konstantinos Mavropanos for £1.8m.

Manchester City missed out on Alexis Sanchez and Riyad Mahrez, but landed 23-year-old Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte in the closing stages of the window for a club-record £57m and snapped up Jack Harrison from MLS side New York City for £4m.

In contrast, Bournemouth, Burnley, Manchester United, Newcastle and West Ham did not spend a penny on permanent transfers during the window, although Manchester United swapped Henrikh Mkhitaryan for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez.

Van Dijk was the most expensive acquisition in the Premier League, followed by Aubameyang, Laporte, Cenk Tosun (£27m to Everton), Lucas Moura (£25m to Spurs), Emerson (£24.6m to Chelsea), Adrien Silva (£22m to Leicester) and Theo Walcott (£20m to Everton).

Only seven Premier League clubs received funds from player sales.

In addition to spending the most, Liverpool also received the most, collecting a window-high £146.2m from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho and another £200,000 from the sale of Cameron Brannagan to Oxford United.

Southampton were the next biggest beneficiaries from sales, cashing in £75m for Van Dijk, followed by Chelsea’s £57m for striker Diego Costa, whose move to Atletico Madrid finally went through on January 1.

Arsenal collected £50m from Walcott, Olivier Giroud (£18m) and Francis Coquelin (£12m), while West Ham received £26m for Andre Ayew (£18m) and Diafra Sakho (£8).

Everton offloaded Ross Barkley for a comparatively low £15m and Liam Walsh to Bristol City for £1m, while West Brom received £2.5m from Leeds for Tyler Roberts.

Only three clubs made a net profit from transfers during the window, with Liverpool making the most with £71m - after Coutinho’s sale mitigated the record signing of Van Dijk - followed by Southampton (£55.9m) and West Ham (£26m).

Manchester City recorded the greatest loss with -£61m from player sales, while Everton (-(£31m), Leicester (-£26.4m), Stoke (-£25m), Swansea (-£18m), Brighton (-£14.1m), Huddersfield (-£12m) and Arsenal (-£11.8m) all fell seven digits in the red.

Premier League clubs signed 48 players in total with Watford and Stoke both making four additions - including loans - while Newcastle, Chelsea, West Brom, Arsenal, Brighton, Swansea, Leicester and Everton all made three acquisitions.

Liverpool, West Ham, Burnley, Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Huddersfield and Manchester City all made two signings during the window.

Southampton and Tottenham were frugal with incomings, only signing Guido Carrillo and Moura, respectively, while Bournemouth were the only club not to make at least one signing.

There were 151 outgoings, with Arsenal offloading a league-high 15 players, followed by Liverpool (12), Everton (11), Newcastle, Manchester City (both 10), Watford, Chelsea and West Brom (all nine).

West Ham, Huddersfield, Tottenham and Bournemouth all allowed seven players to leave, followed by Manchester United (six), Brighton, Leicester, Burnley (all five).

Crystal Palace and Southampton only parted company, either permanently or temporarily on loan, with four players - with Stoke shedding a league-low three players from their roster.

West Brom will wear Cyrille Regis shirts against Southampton

Show/hide article…

West Brom will wear shirts with Cyrille Regis’ name on them this Saturday to honour the club icon following his sudden death last month.

Regis died of a heart attack just a month before he was due to take his wife on a Caribbean cruise to mark his 60th birthday.

The jerseys, which will be worn against Southampton, will feature a motif of Regis celebrating one of his 112 goals for the Baggies – his strike against Notts County in 1982.

It is West Brom’s first home game since the death of Regis, whose funeral was on Tuesday, and the club will have an hour’s build-up to the game purely to celebrate his life.

There will be a parade of players there to pay respect, a minute’s applause and video footage of a player who served as an inspiration to so many.

Regis was recognised as a pioneer for black players during the 1970s and 1980s after experiencing racial abuse and paving the way for a new generation.

The club have asked supporters to get there an hour before the 3pm kick-off on Saturday in order to be present for the occasion.

The shirts will be auctioned off following the Southampton game, with all proceeds going to a charity of the Regis family’s choice.

Fans have also been urged to bring their West Brom scarves to the game in order to show their respects by waving them and creating a sea of blue and white before kick-off.

Premier League transfers RATED: Which club had best January window?

Show/hide article…

The January transfer window has now closed after the usual mad scramble to strengthen squads at the mid-point of the season.

Spending by the 20 Premier League clubs rose dramatically on a year ago with a grand total of £419.5million splashed out over the past 31 days.

The likes of Alexis Sanchez, Virgil van Dijk, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ross Barkley, Emerson Palmieri, Aymeric Laporte, Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott made headlines in one of the most exciting January windows yet.

But which club conducted the best business? We assess all 20 top-flight sides on their ins and outs.

The departure of Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United threatened to further toxify the air of frustration among Arsenal fans and anti-Arsene Wenger feeling, but somehow they turned it around and emerged from the window stronger.

Removing Sanchez now rather than when his contract expired in the summer meant Arsenal could get Henrikh Mkhitaryan in return and get rid of a divisive dressing room presence who threatened to clock off long before May.

The £56m signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund has got fans rightly excited and if he can replicate his goal returns from the Bundesliga, they will could still finish in the top four.

A further boost came when Mesut Ozil agreed to a new long-term contract and it’s all turned out pretty positively for the Gunners and their new hierarchy.

No doubt Arsenal fans ideally didn’t want to see Olivier Giroud moving across town to rivals Chelsea but the Frenchman was too far down the pecking order and so it makes sense for all involved.

A very quiet January for the Cherries, who still aren’t far away from the relegation zone given how tight the bottom half of the league table is.

It was a chance to bring in some additions but with a limited budget in the end they only shed Lewis Grabban and Benik Afobe from their squad.

Mind you, as they then went and won 3-0 at Chelsea, perhaps Eddie Howe doesn’t need to be worried.

If Brighton are to enjoy a second season in the Premier League, urgent reinforcements were needed to an attack that has only mustered 18 goals in 25 matches so far.

And they achieved their aims, breaking their club record to sign Jurgen Locadia from PSV Eindhoven for £14m. Locadia scored 62 goals in 178 games for PSV but it remains to be seen if he can bridge the gap to the Premier League.

One man they know well is Leonardo Ulloa, signed on loan from Leicester until the end of the season, and another player who will serve them well up front.

It now remains to be seen whether they have enough firepower to survive.

Their pre-Christmas form may be a thing of the past - and hopes of qualifying for European football may have diminished - but it was a good window for the Clarets.

They managed to keep all of their best players and added Aaron Lennon cheaply from Everton and also loaned Georges-Kevin N’Koudou from Tottenham.

Both could potentially give Burnley’s season the shot in the arm it needs.

Antonio Conte felt Chelsea needed greater depth if they were to launch a late-season assault on trophies, specifically a striker, a left-back and a creative midfielder.

They ultimately managed to tick all three boxes though their striker pursuit did see them rather humourously linked with the likes of Andy Carroll, Peter Crouch and Ashley Barnes, or literally any forward over 6ft tall.

In the end, taking Giroud from Arsenal looks like a very good fit, while Conte no longer has to worry about Michy Batshuayi, someone he clearly never rated.

For £15m, buying Ross Barkley was a no-brainer. While his career seems to have been stalled for the past four years, he’ll be desperate to re-start it on a bigger stage than Everton.

Chelsea could have a brilliant player on their hands. If not, he only cost £15m.

Emerson Palmieri, signed from Roma, could well prove an exciting addition on the left side and seems well-suited to Conte’s manner of playing.

Roy Hodgson felt he needed several reinforcements during the window but in the end, despite a frantic final few hours, they only found a few pieces for the jigsaw.

Poland international centre-half Jaroslaw Jach came in from Zaglebie Lubin, midfielder Erdal Rakip was loaned from Benfica and striker Alexander Sorloth arrived on deadline day from Midtjylland for £9m.

All have added depth to the squad but hardly set pulses racing. Regardless, all hands on deck now for the survival effort.

Sam Allardyce knew he needed to spend after the initial momentum following his appointment faded amid the hectic festive period. Of particular importance was adding pace, creativity and a reliable goalscorer.

The £27m signing of Cenk Tosun from Besiktas and the £25m arrival of Theo Walcott from Arsenal will hopefully have done that. Walcott scored twice in Wednesday night’s 2-1 win over Leicester, a very promising sign.

Evertonians will, of course, be disappointed to see academy product Barkley leave, and might have hoped for more than £15m for him, but it’s probably for the best.

The loan signing of Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala could prove a handy deadline day addition.

These are worrying times for Huddersfield, who have slipped precariously down the table and are now barely above the relegation zone.

Ideally, they would have brought in half-a-dozen players during January but they had to make do with the £14m buy of Alex Pritchard from Norwich and the loan of Monaco’s Terence Kongolo.

It hasn’t convinced many people they have what it takes to survive.

A transfer window dominated by efforts to cling on to their prize asset Riyad Mahrez rather than strengthen their squad.

In the end, Leicester did manage to keep hold of Mahrez despite a last-ditch £60m bid from Manchester City but given the Algerian’s determination to get his big money move at some point, you wonder what he’ll be like for the rest of the campaign.

On the plus side, Leicester did finally get their deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva over the line having missed the August deadline by 14 seconds.

And the £4.4m signing Fousseni Diabate looks a very promising one given his FA Cup debut at Peterborough but Leicester remain at great pains to point out he isn’t a replacement for Mahrez.

It didn’t take a genius to work out what Liverpool were desperately crying out for in January - a decent central defender.

Jurgen Klopp finally signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, though it took £75m to plug their defensive hole. Liverpool will be praying Van Dijk solves their problems, though early results with him in the side haven’t been heartening.

The sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for a whopping £145m more than balanced the books though it did provoke frenzied debate as to the extent Liverpool would miss him.

They certainly don’t lack vibrancy going forward, with the form of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane this season softening the blow of losing him.

Despite their world class squad and fabulous form this season, Pep Guardiola acknowledged the need for greater depth as they attempt to compete on four fronts between now and the end of the campaign.

They withdrew their interest in Alexis Sanchez once Manchester United got involved, preferring not to enter a bidding war and, as it transpired, to try and tempt Leicester to sell Mahrez instead.

This proved unsuccessful yet there are few out there who’ll feel City - with their 15-point lead at the top of the Premier League - are starved of attacking talent.

One long-standing target they did bring in was Athletic Bilbao centre-back Aymeric Laporte, who cost £57m but will add further defensive protection.

So a pretty indifferent window for City all told, but it’s hard to spot too many areas of weakness in Guardiola’s all-conquering team.

Beating City to the signature of Sanchez will feel good for United and Jose Mourinho and the Chilean will provide a certain X-factor that they have maybe been lacking in certain matches this season.

Adding Sanchez to the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard should mean United have enough to compete in three competitions for now and take on City properly next year.

It also should have laid to rest Mourinho’s fears that United were falling too far behind City and needed to spend at ever-more eye-watering levels. Indeed, he has extended his contract as a result.

The window also got Henrikh Mkhitaryan out of his hair, so Mourinho should be happy.

Summer priorities must be another central midfielder and probably another centre-back.

It’s a difficult time to be a Newcastle fan. The club remains stuck in a state of limbo, with Mike Ashley’s sale to new investors stalled, no transfer budget as a result and manager Rafa Benitez questioning his future.

With the team struggling to keep their head above water in the Premier League, there was never going to be millions put up for new signings this January yet firepower was so urgently needed.

That explains why their headline arrival, Islam Slimani, came in from Leicester on loan in the last knockings of the window. Newcastle fans have little choice but to pin their hopes on him.

Two others arrived on loan in this most frugal of windows - Chelsea winger Kenedy and Sparta Prague goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Not very inspiring.

The Van Dijk saga was concluded early enough in the window to allow Southampton to reinvest in some players that might save them from relegation.

Nobody at the club will be too disappointed to see the back of the Dutch defender given he’d barely featuring during the first-half of the season and they received a good return at £75m.

Their only signing was the Monaco forward Guido Carrillo, who cost £19.2m, and the fans can only hope for fireworks from him given how few goals they have witnessed this season.

You suspect it will prove too little.

Another club trying to stay afloat in the very choppy waters just above the Premier League drop zone.

They partially succeeded in strengthening parts of their team with the signings of right-back Moritz Bauer, midfielder Badou Ndiaye and left-back Kostas Stafylidis.

One player they didn’t manage to get through the door was a reliable goalscorer, however, and that could prove criticial.

Wins over Liverpool and Arsenal since Carlos Carvalhal arrived at Swansea have lifted spirits, though they remain in the relegation zone.

But the mood was lifted further on deadline day by the £18m return of Andre Ayew from West Ham and they will hope he has a similar impact as during his first spell with the club in 2015-16.

The loan signing of midfielder Andy King from Leicester could also prove an inspired move and Swansea do now look better equipped to continue their resurgence under Carvalhal.

There wasn’t a threat of Tottenham losing any of their key personnel for the time being, though the club must be bracing itself for a world record tilt from Real Madrid for Harry Kane in the summer.

Rarely ones to go on a spending spree, Spurs signed only Lucas Moura from Paris Saint-Germain in a £25m buy that will offer quality back-up to Kane up front.

Lucas had a very good scoring record in France before he fell out of favour and it’s a very promising addition for Tottenham as they aim to regain their top four place in the Premier League.

With Javi Gracia replacing Marco Silva as manager on January 21, it was a pretty disjointed transfer window for mid-table Watford.

The loan signing of Gerard Deulofeu from Barcelona looks a good one, especially if he can replicate his best Everton form.

It was most important to add a little something extra going forward, but Watford also loaned Sunderland’s Didier Ndong and bought Dodi Lukebakio from Anderlecht as one for the future.

Not too bad, but Gracia will use the summer to put his stamp on the squad, assuming the Pozzo family don’t get trigger happy before then.

The Baggies managed to keep hold of in-demand centre-back Jonny Evans, which will be important in their efforts to lift themselves off the bottom of the table.

They have also offered Daniel Sturridge the platform to revitalise his career and the Liverpool loanee should certainly add quality and important goals.

Making permanent the signing of Egyptian centre-back Ahmed Hegazi also looks a shrewd move as they try and stem the flow of goals.

An injury crisis in David Moyes’ squad prompted a flurry of late activity, with West Ham signing Jordan Hugill from Preston for £8m.

He’s an impressive performer down in the Championship, so the Hammers will hope his goals there translate into the big time.

There are high hopes over Joao Mario, acquired on loan from Inter Milan, too, as Moyes looks for some extra drive to continue their improvement under his management.

Cenk Tosun, Guido Carrillo, Konstantinos Mavropanos: Lesser-known January signings to watch in the Premier League

Show/hide article…

Alexis Sanchez, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were among the big movers of the January transfer window in the Premier League, but who are the lesser-known new arrivals to watch out for?

From a Dutch striker with an eye-catching Eredvisie record to an Austrian right-back who has already impressed, which of our selection are you most looking forward to seeing?

Take a look below and let us know on Twitter @SkySportsPL.

Strikers from the Eredivise have had varied impacts in the Premier League, but Brighton hope Jurgen Locadia will prove more Luis Suarez than Afonso Alves. The Seagulls smashed their transfer record for the 24-year-old, paying PSV Eindhoven £14.1m to secure his signature on a long-term contract.

Locadia, a powerful forward who can play anywhere across the front line, arrives at the Amex Stadium having spent his entire professional career at PSV. He scored 62 goals in 178 appearances for the Dutch side after making his debut in 2011, including nine in 18 this season. He is yet to represent the Netherlands at senior level, but has been called up on three occasions.

It was Theo Walcott who scored the goals to see off Leicester on Wednesday night, but Everton hope Cenk Tosun will soon prove his worth too. The Turkish international, a £27m signing from Besiktas, arrives at Goodison Park with a fine scoring record in his homeland. Will it translate to the Premier League?

Southampton re-invested some of fee they received from Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk in Argentinian striker Guido Carrillo, a club record £19.1m addition from Monaco. The 26-year-old arrives at St Mary’s having worked with Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino at former club Estudiantes.

Carillo was a bit-part player for Monaco but he is likely to feature more prominently for a Southampton side who have struggled in front of goal this season. At 6ft 2ins, he will give them a focal point up front and, they hope, more of a goal threat than Shane Long, Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini.

Have Leicester unearthed another gem in Fousseni Diabate? The French-born Malian forward joined the Foxes for a reported fee of around £2m from Ligue 2 side Gazalec Ajaccio in mid-January, marking his debut with two goals and an assist in their 5-1 win over Peterborough in the FA Cup.

Leicester will have high hopes for Diabate having previously plucked Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante from the same division, and Puel, whose eldest son, Gregoire, played with the youngster at Ajaccio, is excited by his potential.

“He has good attributes to play in the Premier League: pace, a good engine,” he said. “He can make good penetration but also good combinations with his team-mates. Now, he has to continue this good work on the pitch and in training, and step-by-step we will see if we can give him some game time in the Premier League.”

Unknown Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos became Arsenal’s first signing since the appointment of new chief scout Sven Mislintat when he arrived from PAS GIannina at the start of January. Arsene Wenger initially intended to send him out on loan, but his plans changed after seeing him in training. “The first signs he showed were so encouraging that I decided to keep him,” he said.

Crystal Palace bolstered their front line with the deadline day signing of Alexander Sorloth from Midtjylland for a fee believed to be in the region of £9m. The 6ft 4ins 22-year-old, who previously had spells at FC Groningen, Bodo Glimt and Rosenborg, described the move to the Premier League as a “dream come true”.

Sorloth is a full Norwegian international who impressed Palace with his eye-catching performances for Danish Superliga leaders Midtjylland in the first half of the campaign, where he scored 15 goals and provided nine assists in 26 appearances in all competitions.

Crystal Palace’s only other permanent signing was that of Polish international Jaroslaw Jach from Zaglebie Lubin. The 23-year-old centre-back has signed a three-and-a-half year contract at Selhurst Park having made 78 appearances in five seasons at his former club.

“The Premier League was the league I have followed since I was little and I always wanted to come and play here,” he said. “I know it is the club from south London and has an outstanding manager, Roy Hodgson, who led team England in the past. Every game is a sell-out which is one of the greatest things.”

It didn’t generate too many headlines but Virgil van Dijk wasn’t the only new arrival at Liverpool in January. Jurgen Klopp’s side also struck a £200,000 deal for Falkirk full-back Tony Gallacher.

The 18-year-old made his debut for the Scottish side at the age of 16 in November 2015 and went on to make 26 first-team appearances in total. The highly-rated youngster, who had also been linked with Manchester United and Stoke, will initially join up with Liverpool’s U23s.

Manchester United clinched the signing of 17-year-old goalkeeper Matej Kovar from FC Slovacko. The Czech Republic U18 international impressed the club during a trial period in November and will now hope to impress Nicky Butt and the rest of the coaching team at United’s academy.

Austrian right-back Moritz became Stoke’s first signing of the January transfer window when he completed his £5m move from Rubin Kazan shortly after the sacking of Mark Hughes. The 26-year-old, who can also play as a wing-back or winger, has gone straight into the Stoke team, starting their games against Manchester United, Huddersfield and Watford and impressing Paul Lambert.

Bauer previously played for Swiss side Grasshopper Zurich. He represented Switzerland at youth level before switching allegiance to Austria, for whom he has won four senior caps.

English football could have two Deadline Days in August

If one transfer deadline wasn’t enough, English football could have two Deadline Days in August.

In a move designed to end disruption and allow clubs to focus on their football, Premier League clubs have agreed to close the summer transfer window before the start of the 2018-19 season.

The EFL could follow the Premier League’s example and bring their transfer deadline forward when they meet next month, but as things stand, and with foreign leagues’ deadlines also expected to be on August 31, we are in line for two transfer deadlines next summer.

So what does this all mean for the summer window? Here’s all you need to know…

There is no official confirmation as yet as to when the summer transfer window will open.

The 2017 summer window opened for English clubs on Friday, June 9 and this year it is expected to once again open in early June.

The 2018 summer window will close on Thursday August 9, two days before the first match of next season after Premier League clubs have voted to bring the deadline forward.

It came after a number of Premier League managers and club officials complained about the negative impact of transfer uncertainty and speculation on their players.

Last summer, Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa, Philippe Coutinho and Virgil van Dijk were just four of a list of players who did not play for their clubs as they pursued exits.

Sky sources understand the decision was not unanimous between the Premier League clubs. It was reached instead by 14 clubs, a two-thirds majority.

Five clubs voted against the change and one abstained.

"There was a big concern that the Premier League has been playing two or three match rounds with a degree of uncertainty between themselves.

"It wasn’t unanimous but nobody was pathologically angry about the situation. But there were some concerns by some clubs that, although they wouldn’t be able to buy any more players, their players could still be picked off by those who haven’t closed their windows. It just meant they couldn’t support it.

“We did have managers’ meetings before the season started. The managers are very strong on it. Almost all of them were in favour of shutting it earlier. The clubs just think it’s wrong that, going into the first game of the season, they could be playing against a player that, a few weeks later, could be playing for a different club.”

Bringing the deadline forward will eradicate panic buys after two or three games of the season, but it will also give Premier League clubs significantly less time to complete their business.

Next summer, the window will close less than four weeks after the end of the World Cup. Factor in players taking holidays after the Russia showpiece, and Premier League clubs will be left rushing to complete their business in a much shorter time-frame.

The heightened pressure and urgency could make Deadline Day even more frantic for Premier League clubs.

As things stand, the transfer window for the English Football League remains unaffected, with EFL clubs allowed to buy from Premier League clubs.

However, EFL clubs will vote later this month over whether to change their summer window in line with the Premier League for incoming transfers.

EFL clubs will also vote on the registration of players on a temporary loan transfer until the end of August.

The EFL is understood to favour keeping loan deals until the end of the month, with just under a quarter of all loans completed on Deadline Day in August.

Following an early closure, if clubs agree, it is understood the league would only allow clubs to convert a standard loan to a permanent transfer the following January, to prevent any misuse of its proposed new rule.

The transfer windows in Spain, France, Germany and Italy all expected to open in early June.

As usual, the deadlines are expected to fall on August 31, with Ligue 1, Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga showing no signs of following the Premier League’s lead.

Premier League clubs will no longer be able to make signings when the season gets underway, but the change does not apply to other leagues, meaning Premier League players will still be able to move abroad - and at the moment to EFL clubs - up until August 31.

That means transfer sagas such as Barcelona’s pursuit of Coutinho last summer could still drag on into the season, creating the same kind of unwanted distractions for Premier League bosses.

However, Premier League clubs will be in a position to charge a premium from foreign clubs after the early deadline has passed, but they will be unable to reinvest their earnings until the January window.
