Ref Watch: Dermot Gallagher’s verdict on whether Christian Eriksen’s opener for Spurs against Man Utd have been disallowed

Ref Watch: Dermot Gallagher’s verdict on whether Christian Eriksen’s opener for Spurs against Man Utd have been disallowed

Should Christian Eriksen’s quick-fire opener for Tottenham Hotspur against Manchester United have stood? Were West Bromwich Albion lucky not to have been reduced to 10 men against Manchester City? Dermot Gallagher has his say in this week’s Ref Watch.

As always, there were a number of hotly disputed decisions in the Premier League in midweek. Not to worry, however, as we have Dermot here to run his eye over those big calls.

So whether it is penalties given and not given, possible sendings off and a player encroaching at the kick-off, the former top-flight official gives us his verdict…

Incident: Was Harry Kane encroaching for Spurs’ first goal?

Dermot’s verdict: By the letter of the law, the kick-off should have been retaken

Dermot says: If you look at it, it is so fine. There are five players between the referee and Kane. Also, as the ball is about to be kicked, it is so tight that if the referee [Andre Marriner] blew and had it retaken and they had scored, people would say, ‘Is he overzealous?’ But to the letter of the law, it should have been retaken, although you cannot blame this for the goal as it comes 11 seconds later, and 11 seconds is a long time.

Incident: Antonio Valencia brings down Dele Alli in the area

Dermot says: It is a foul, although only one angle from behind the goal shows that, and that is where the referee cannot be. Whether he touches the ball or not, though, is immaterial because it is a foul.

Incident: Matt Phillips only saw yellow for this challenge on Brahim Diaz, but was it a red card?

Dermot says: If the referee [Robert Madley] has the view we have here, he will send him off every day of the week because it is high, late, at speed and likely to endanger the safety of an opponent. But if you go back to the original shot, what you will see is that the only justification for not giving that is Gareth Barry is immediately between the referee and the incident and he does not have a clear view of it. All he sees is the outcome of it, rather than the actual occurrence itself.

Incident: Wayne Rooney gives away a penalty after bringing down Wilfried Ndidi in the box

Dermot says: A great position by Chris Kavanagh (the referee’s assistant) as the play built up, he has moved into that channel and has got the perfect view - he has seen it and recognised it.

Incident: Liverpool win a penalty after Philip Billing pulls over Emre Can in the area

Dermot says: Clumsy, is it not? He cannot win the ball there, clumsy, penalty. And again, the referee [Kevin Friend] was in the perfect position and that is the secret with a lot of these decisions - if you have the got the perfect viewing position, you can make the correct decision. But if you are blocked off, say, it becomes a lot more difficult.

Incident: Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson brings down Collin Quaner, but no spot kick

Dermot says: I do not think this is a penalty, both players are running for the ball and are off balance, and the Huddersfield player [Quaner] is already off balance. They are touching, but he [Robertson] is not pushing him. If anything, he [Quaner] should not fall that way if being pulled.

Premier League transfer spending compared with La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 & Serie A

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs set a new winter transfer spending record after splashing £446m on signings - but how did that total compare with the other top leagues in Europe?

England’s top flight spent more than any of the other top four leagues in Europe, dwarfing totals spent in La Liga (£250m), Bundesliga (£65m), Ligue 1 (£50m) and Serie A (£20m).

Therefore, Premier League spending almost doubled sums in Spain - and was 22 times more than the £20m spent in Serie A.

Barcelona’s acquisition of Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho for £146m was the most expensive deal across the five leagues and accounted for more than half of La Liga spending.

Diego Costa also contributed heavily to the total in Spain after finally completing his £57m move to Atletico Madrid from Chelsea.

Liverpool’s £75m outlay for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk was the second-most expensive deal across the leagues - a fee the Reds later mitigated from the sale of Coutinho.

Manchester City signed Aymeric Laporte for a club-record £57m from Athletic Bilbao, with the Spanish club promptly activating the £27m release clause for Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez as a replacement.

Arsenal prised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund for a club-record £60m, while north London rivals Tottenham spent £25m on Paris Saint-Germain striker Lucas Moura.

In Germany, Dortmund invested £18m on centre-back Manuel Akanji, while Bayern Munich snapped up striker Sandro Wagner for around £12m. Other notable Bundesliga signings included Admir Mehmedi (£7.2m to Wolfsburg), Milot Rashica (£6.3m to Werder Bremen) and Vincent Koziello (£2.7m to FC Koln).

In Ligue 1, the majority of cash was spent on Pietro Pellegri (£19m to Monaco), Martin Terrier (£10m to Lyon), Rafik Guitane and Diafro Sakho (both £9m to Rennes).

Only four players cost more than £2m in Italy to contribute to the staggeringly low £20m total spend, including Pol Lirola (£6.3m to Sassuolo) , Bryan Dabo (£4m to Fiorentina), Damir Ceter (£3m to Cagliari) and Fererico Mattiello (£2.25m to Atalanta).

Gabbiadini doubtful for West Brom trip

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini is a doubt for Southampton’s trip to West Brom on Saturday.

The striker, who came on as a substitute in the midweek home draw with Brighton, missed training on Thursday morning due to a hip complaint.

Manager Mauricio Pellegrino reported no further injury problems, with the exception of long-term absentee Charlie Austin.

“Manolo Gabbiadini couldn’t train today,” the boss revealed. “He’s with the doctor trying to do some studies on a scan.

“He felt some pain in his hip. We will decide tomorrow – I’ll wait for the doctor for some information.

“Most of them, except Charlie Austin, will be available for Saturday.”

Stat Pack: West Brom vs Saints

Show/hide article…

West Bromwich Albion have failed to score in seven of their last nine Premier League meetings with Southampton, but won both matches in which they did find the net (W2 D2 L5).

There have been just seven goals scored in the last nine top-flight league meetings between these sides at the Hawthorns.

West Brom have lost just one of their last six Premier League home games, but four of these have ended in a draw (W1 D4 L1).

Southampton have won each of their last four Premier League games against opposition that started that day bottom of the league – this includes wins over West Ham United (August) and Crystal Palace (September) this season.

Alan Pardew – who managed 64 games for Southampton in all competitions between August 2009 and August 2010 – has never lost a home league match against the Saints (P5 W3 D2 L0).

West Bromwich Albion have picked up just eight points in 11 Premier League games since Alan Pardew first took charge of the club – only three teams have won fewer points since then, one of which is Southampton (7).

Daniel Sturridge has scored on his first Premier League start for three different clubs – Liverpool, Bolton Wanderers and Manchester City, only failing to do so for Chelsea in the competition.

The previous two Premier League meetings have been won by a single Saints goal; Jordy Clasie scored the winner at the Hawthorns last time out in April 2017 before Sofiane Boufal’s superb individual goal separated the teams at St Mary’s in October.

Transfer net spend of every Premier League club in both the summer and winter 2017/18 windows

Show/hide article…

Spending records in transfer windows appear to be getting broken all the time and this season has proved no different.

The January transfer window, which closed on Wednesday night, broke the record for the most money spent by Premier League clubs on deadline day, with over £150m spent.

In total, top-flight teams spent £450million in the last month - more than double the previous record outlay in a mid-season window.

That followed an unprecedented summer transfer window, which saw Premier League teams splash out a staggering £1.4bn.

But many clubs actually made a profit this season.

Check out the gallery above to see Premier League clubs ranked in terms of net spend in 2017/18.

Premier League clubs’ January transfer spending up 77%

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs spent 77% more on new signings compared to last year’s winter window, according to new figures.

But net spend, the amount spent after the income from player sales is deducted, was the equivalent of around 3% of a club’s total revenue across the Premier League.

£419.5m was spent by clubs, compared to £236.7m in 2017, a rise of 77.2% in the window, which closed on Wednesday night.

Virgil van Dijk’s £75m move to Liverpool, Pierre-Emerick’s Aubameyang’s £60m transfer to Arsenal and Aymeric Laporte’s £57m move to Manchester City were the biggest deals.

The Premier League’s figures reveal the overall net spend was £147.6m in January and includes all transfer fees committed by its clubs.

These figures include loan fees but do not include potential add-ons in a transfer.

In total, Premier League clubs made nearly 50 new signings last month, with more than 150 players leaving their sides.

The biggest ever transfer window for spending was £1.4bn last summer, with a net spend of £665m.

Clubs are also committed to supporting schools and local communities in England.

The Premier League’s redistribution programme will invest £443m in all areas of professional sport this season.

The summer transfer window will open in early June and close for the Premier League before the first game of next season.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino says losing runs are part of football life

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton are ‘not too handsome’ at the moment because of their poor run of form.

But the Saints boss says losing is part of football and remains confident he can steer the club to Premier League safety.

Southampton drew 1-1 with Brighton on Wednesday night and are 18th in the table, albeit only five points behind Bournemouth in 10th.

With only four Premier League wins to their name this season, and none since November, it is has been a hard season for Southampton so far but Pellegrino remains philosophical.

“At the end of the season, we can analyse this better,” he said.

"Right now, when you are not in the right moment, you have to be careful with your analysis because psychologically the belief people have about us, the manager, the club, the board, it is not the best.

"When you lose, everybody is unhappy. When you win, everybody looks really handsome - blonde, blue eyes.

“But, when you lose, you are not too handsome.”

Asked if he was confident he could turn Southampton’s season around, Pellegrino said: "Football is something I did all my life.

"I got the feeling from childhood - when you lose some people look at you like ‘oh, you have got a problem’.

"Everybody who plays and works in football knows this feeling - but also I got to the point where I enjoy it, because I like the adrenaline and the pressure, even in difficult situations like now.

"I feel alive in this job but sometimes, who wants to be on the side of the loser?

"But, you want to play the game, sometimes you have to lose.

"I feel we are a unit and the togetherness in the club is really high.

“I receive a lot of support from the beginning and I think this club, these people, deserve more.”

Carrillo set for Southampton start as Gabbiadini faces late test

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton’s Guido Carrillo is in contention to start Saturday’s Premier League clash at West Bromwich Albion as fellow forward Manolo Gabbiadini faces a late fitness test, manager Mauricio Pellegrino said on Thursday.

Argentine Carrillo, who signed from Monaco for around 19 million pounds last week, impressed on his league debut once he was introduced as a 46th-minute substitute in the 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday.

“It is one possibility, I think he (Carrillo) was alive and he showed with his energy that he wants to help the team and show his potential,” Pellegrino told a news conference when asked if the club’s record signing would start.

“Little by little he will come back to his best level and the connection of the team will get better.”

Southampton are currently without top scorer Charlie Austin and could be dealt another injury blow after Italian Gabbiadini missed Thursday’s training.

“He is with the doctor now trying to do a scan… he feels some pain in his hip and we’ll decide tomorrow. I am waiting for the doctor for some information,” Pellegrino added.

Southampton are 18th in the league with 23 points and Pellegrino said the club had to take positives from Wednesday’s clash into the game against basement side West Brom.

”After the (Brighton) goal we controlled the game,“ he said. ”We need to try and win games. We have to continue doing things to try and improve but we have to think about one game at a time.

“I imagine that away we will have more space but at the same time we have to control the opponent (West Brom) – the opponent is really strong in set plays.”
