Southampton 1-1 Brighton - Stephens rescues a point for Saints

Show/hide article…

SAINTS recovered from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw with Brighton but wasted the chance to ignite their season as their struggles continued in the final third.

They had recently shown signs of improvement and secured some encouraging results, but after under-pressure manager Mauricio Pellegrino started new £19.2million striker Guido Carrillo on the bench, they remain at risk of relegation and in 18th place.

Brighton represented beatable opposition even after Glenn Murray had given them the lead, but following Jack Stephens scoring for the second game in succession and despite their dominance, the winning goal Southampton so desperately needed did not arrive.

The visitors had already threatened through Jose Izquierdo and Davy Propper when, in the 14th minute, a clumsy challenge by Wesley Hoedt on Solly March brought the winger down in the area and they were awarded a penalty.

Murray routinely stepped up and finished into the bottom right corner while Alex McCarthy dived towards the left. Unusually in the context of the host team’s so-far disappointing season, they almost immediately produced a response.

Despite so often playing with a lack of creativity and confidence, even if they were doing so against hesitant and limited opponents - and perhaps partly because of that - they found a consistent attacking intent.

Oriol Romeu struck harmlessly over the crossbar from the edge of the area after a classy, backheeled lay-off from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and the impressive Ryan Bertrand then curled just over when aiming for the top left corner after a run from the left wing.

By half-time Brighton’s Mat Ryan had been forced to rush out to intercept a through-ball to Shane Long, Hojbjerg had chased down a clearance from the goalkeeper and deflected it onto the bar, and Bertrand had again curled just over.

As has often been the case for Pellegrino’s team, only the absence of a natural goalscorer meant they were not by then level, which made the introduction of record signing Carrillo as inevitable as his omission was puzzling.

The Argentinian unusually adopted a 4-4-2 for the second half as Carrillo and Sofiane Boufal replaced Romeu and Dusan Tadic, demonstrating how crucial it was they avoided another defeat.

Stephens had already headed wide from a promising position when, in the 64th minute, a foul by March on Boufal gave the hosts a left-wing free-kick.

After James Ward-Prowse curled a low cross into the penalty area, similarly to during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat of Watford, from close range Stephens sent the loose ball through the crowded penalty area and towards goal, beyond Ryan and into the back of the net.

The momentum Southampton’s, Hojbjerg shortly followed that with a low drive from midfield that Ryan routinely saved, but despite their dominance of possession, they continued to struggle to create the clear chance they needed.

In stoppage time, Steven Davis sent a well-struck, 25-yard shot towards the bottom right corner, but again Ryan saved, securing 15th-placed Brighton another vital point.

Paul Merson’s transfer window grades: High marks for Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd

Show/hide article…

Paul Merson grades the transfer window for each Premier League club with Chelsea, Liverpool and Man Utd top of the class.

It was a record-breaking January window as players such as Alexis Sanchez, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Philippe Coutinho, Virgil van Dijk, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Ross Barkley, Olivier Giroud, Lucas Moura, Aymeric Laporte and Theo Walcott made high-profile moves.

But which Premier League clubs did best and which club was given an F by Soccer Saturday expert Merson? Read on for his team-by-team grades…

MERSE SAYS: I’ll give them an A for attacking because Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan are top, top-drawer players. They’ve lost Giroud but getting rid of Walcott was good business in my opinion. But they’ve brought in no defenders and they need a centre-half. How have they not got Jonny Evans out of West Brom? I was watching the game against Swansea thinking: ‘You’re going to pay £60m for another centre-forward when you’ve already got a £40m forward in Lacazette, who isn’t going to get a game now?’ I’ll give them a D- for defensive work.

MERSE SAYS: You can’t really give them a mark because they haven’t brought anybody in! What grade can you give to the kid who doesn’t turn up at school? I’ll have to give them an F because they’re in a relegation battle and they should do business. I like Eddie Howe, but I just think he’s very, very loyal. You look at the back four and, apart from Nathan Ake, they’ve been there for the last six or seven years and they’ve been through the leagues. They don’t often let him down but you need to freshen it up sometimes.

MERSE SAYS: They’ve brought in Leo Ulloa and I really like him. He scores goals and had a good record at Leicester, so I think that’s a good deal. It’s good to see they’re having a go.

MERSE SAYS: Sean Dyche has gone with wide players, and I can see where he’s coming from, but Lennon and N’Koudou don’t remind me of Burnley players who will dig in, sit in and be hard to beat. I don’t see that with those two, they’re more like luxury players. I’ll have to wait and see on that one, but I don’t think it’s great.

MERSE SAYS: To get Giroud for that price, it’s a cup of tea, that is. He could keep Alvaro Morata out of the team, he really could. I’m a big fan of Barkley as well, even though I know he splits opinion. Emerson is decent as well and getting Batshuayi and Kenedy out is good business. Antonio Conte should be happy with what they’ve done.

MERSE SAYS: I don’t really know the players that Crystal Palace have brought in. Ibrahim Amadou would have been a decent signing if they could have got him to come. I would have given them a B+ if they’d got him.

MERSE SAYS: This has been a decent window. They’ve let players go that weren’t playing and got them off the wage bill. Theo has scored over 100 goals for Arsenal and the lad Tosun needs an opportunity because he’s living off scraps so far. They’ll be pleased with their business.

MERSE SAYS: The Huddersfield owner has had a go and if they go down it will be in a blaze of glory and won’t be for lack of trying. You see teams come up and don’t really spend, so fair play to him. I like Pritchard and I think he will be a good player for them.

MERSE SAYS: They kept Mahrez, but if the other players have the hump with him then you worry. He handed in a transfer request and he put himself in a position to go - but he’s ended up staying. If they forgive him then it’s a result for Leicester by keeping him. However, players shouldn’t not turn up for training and refuse to play matches. One thing they have at Leicester is team spirit and that won’t look good.

MERSE SAYS: It’s been a brilliant window. They needed a centre-half and they paid good money and got him. They also got £146m for Coutinho and got a big earner in Daniel Sturridge off the wage bill. It’s been good business in my opinion. Top marks.

MERSE SAYS: Manchester City can pretty much just go out and get what they need. They paid good money for Laporte but he’s another good player who will fit in. They wouldn’t have been after Riyad Mahrez if Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus weren’t injured, but they’ve got that much money that they could buy him until they’re fit. It’s not a big blow that they haven’t got him.

MERSE SAYS: How many teams get quality like Alexis Sanchez in January? They needed that x-factor and they’ve definitely been missing a spark to give them a little bit extra in tight games. He can play in the Champions League as well, which is a bonus.

MERSE SAYS: Kenedy alone isn’t going to keep you up. I’m not being horrible but he won’t, so I’m glad they did a bit of late business on Deadline Day by getting Slimani. They needed a forward because they’re not scoring enough goals and someone like him might reignite them.

MERSE SAYS: Carillo hasn’t played loads of football but he’s decent. They also got £75m for a centre-half and that’s seriously good business. They were always going to lose him so to get that money is phenomenal. They haven’t got anyone else in but I don’t think they can moan too much.

MERSE SAYS: I don’t know any of those players, so I can’t rate them high. They didn’t buy anybody at the start of the season really and that’s why Mark Hughes struggled. He was left out to dry. I didn’t think they’d get rid of him then give Paul Lambert a few million quid and they haven’t broken the bank, have they?

MERSE SAYS: It wasn’t looking like a good window for Swansea until they brought in Ayew and King at the very last moment. They are two good attacking international players, which is what they need because they’ve been looking quite solid at the back in recent games.

MERSE SAYS: It’s hard with Tottenham. I always say if you put their best XI on the pitch then they’re as good as anybody. So whoever you’re buying it’s hard to make them better unless you’re paying big bucks. But they’ve got a good player in Lucas Moura. You only have to look towards the other week when Christian Eriksen didn’t play and Moussa Sissoko did, and they’re not the same team.

MERSE SAYS: Didier Ndong? I don’t get that one. Deulofeu was at Barcelona and now he’s coming to Watford in a relegation battle. He can be first class on his day but I’ve also seen him off his day. You’ve got to tell him to go out wide and do what you’ve got to do, but if you ask him to do other stuff? I don’t think so.

MERSE SAYS: That could be A+++ if Sturridge finds anywhere near the form he showed a couple of years ago. I’m a massive fan of his and it’s worth the punt. If he gets going he gets them safe and that’s Mastercard… priceless.

MERSE SAYS: Joao Mario is decent and I think they’ll stay up this season. As for Hugill, I think it’s quite a big step from the Championship. People tell me there’s not much between the two divisions but I don’t agree. It’s a big jump to come up and score goals in the Premier League.

WATCH: The best of Deadline Day

Show/hide article…

It was a busy day for the Sky Sports team as the January transfer deadline came and went, with Premier League sides’ spending breaking records for the winter window.

The day began with Arsenal wrapping up their much-anticipated club-record transfer to land Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund, while Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi completed switches to Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund respectively to complete the protracted three-way transfer saga, and there were plenty more big money deals closed as the day wore on.

Lucas Moura’s move to Tottenham from Paris Saint-Germain was finally confirmed late in the day, but there was less joy for Manchester City and Riyad Mahrez, after Leicester refused to sanction a switch for the Algerian which Sky Sports News has been told has left the 2015/16 footballer of the year “depressed”.

There was a wasted trip to Belgium for Newcastle’s Alexander Mitrovic, a failed eleventh-hour bid from Arsenal for West Brom’s Jonny Evans, an army of freezing Sky Sports reporters peppered across Premier League grounds around the country, and the odd furry friend getting into the transfer deadline day spirit.

Chris Hughton was pleased with Brighton’s fight after their 1-1 draw with Southampton

Show/hide article…

Chris Hughton was pleased with Brighton’s fight after their 1-1 draw with Southampton

Chris Hughton has praised the battling display from his side after Brighton drew 1-1 with Southampton.

Brighton took a first-half lead through Glenn Murray’s penalty at St Mary’s but were denied victory as Jack Stephens scored Southampton’s equaliser in the 64th minute.

The draw does little to help Brighton’s rise up the table as they are only one point above the relegation zone in 15th. But Hughton was happy with his side’s display in a game where they had far less of the ball.

“We were well worthy of the point we got,” Hughton told Sky Sports after the game.

"When you play away, and with the players they’ve got, you’d expect them to have good possession and to threaten but I think we restricted them to one half-chance or so.

“We were resilient at what we did and had a very good opportunity once we got into that final third and we took it. So overall, I’m reasonably happy.”

Even though Brighton did not get the win they were looking for, Hughton has challenged his players to reach the level required to survive in the Premier League.

He added: "This is the time for players to step up and it’s become quite obvious that going into this last third of the season it’s going to be the team that stands out from the rest that survives.

“Whether that’s through resilience or scoring the odd goals or turning defence into attacks… whichever way it is they’ve got to show it a bit more than the others.”

THE VERDICT: Saints know their fate

Show/hide article…

It was hardly the finale to January that Saints fans had dreamt of.

When supporters awoke yesterday morning there was perhaps a tinge of anticipation and expectancy. It was a big day for the club.

There was every chance that by the time it came to slumber again that everybody would know a lot more about what awaits Saints for the rest of the season.

The first big question mark surrounded whether Saints could pull off a dramatic deadline day deal for Quincy Promes. The answer was that Spartak held out and it didn’t happen, leaving the meaningful January business as the sale of Virgil van Dijk and the capture of Guido Carrillo.

Saints now know what they have to work with for the remainder of the season.

Then of course there was the small matter of a game against Brighton.

The two clubs are certainly relegation rivals and it felt like a match Saints really needed to win to have any realistic hope of extracting themselves from a few months of purely battling the drop.

Anything less and the script was written for a tense finale to the campaign.

And, so, that is the way it is to be after a 1-1 draw.

It could have been worse, Brighton did lead at half time, but it also could have been so much better.

The fixture list is starting to look ominous for Saints now with the winnable looking home matches rather thin on the ground.

If there was the suspicion that Saints really needed four points from the Brighton and West Brom double header, the equation is now quite clear heading to The Hawthorns at the weekend.

Saints can take comfort from the fact there are so many teams embroiled in this fight, but still with just four league wins in the season it needs a turnaround.

For Pellegrino, too, the pressure is well and truly on again.

The match itself was what you might have expected. Both teams knew how much was on the line and didn’t want to lose, but in truth it was probably there for the taking had either been a little braver, or perhaps confident, or maybe incisive.

The impetus on that front really was on Saints.

Brighton almost got the ideal start as within the first minute Glenn Murray’s flick-on gave Pascal Gross the chance to square the ball to Jose Izqueirdo just inside the area but he skied his effort.

Up the other end Oriol Romeu produced the same end result with a header from 12 yards after a James Ward-Prowse corner.

Brighton got the lead on 14 minutes from the penalty spot.

Izquierdo laid the ball off to Solly March, who twisted and turned in the box and was brought down by the trailing leg of Wesley Hoedt, giving referee Mike Dean little option.

Murray stepped up and coolly sent Alex McCarthy the wrong way.

Saints had the greater pressure in the remainder of the half but chances were hard to come by.

Ryan Bertrand hit the side netting with a surprise shot from a difficult angle, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s persistence almost paid dividends as he closed down Brighton keeper Matt Ryan whose clearance hit the Saints man and deflected back against the crossbar.

Bertrand might have done better two minutes before the break after a cute cutback corner from Ward-Prowse gave the left back a chance to shoot first time unmarked from just inside the area but he put over.

Brighton’s only other notable first half attacking moment saw Murray’s near post shot saved by McCarthy.

It felt as if Pellegrino had to do something positive at the break, and while in the past he has been criticised for refusing, this time he acted.

On came Sofiane Boufal and Guido Carrillo for Romeu and Tadic and Saints went with virtually a 4-4-2, and the unusual sight of two strikers pretty much in tandem up top.

It was more of a slow burner than a dramatic immediate impact, but it was at least trying something different.

Jack Stephens, fresh from a first Saints goal in the FA Cup win over Watford, might have levelled things up when he had a free header eight yards out nine minutes after the restart but he put wide.

However, he was on target and equalised on 64 minutes.

Ward-Prowse delivered a dangerous low inswinging left wing free kick and Stephens produced a wonderful piece of improvisation to make the deftest of flicked connections as the ball went through his legs in the six yard box and diverted it into the bottom corner.

It was really only Saints who were pushing for a winner with Brighton seemingly content to try and head back home with a solid point.

Hojbjerg hit a solid shot from distance straight down the middle but it was fielded by Ryan.

Steven Davis did likewise deep into stoppage time but again Ryan was there and the game duly ended in a draw that was clearly far more satisfactory for Brighton than it was for Saints.

This is likely to be a tense few months now.

Saints need West Brom win

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says Saints need to get a win against West Brom at the weekend after their relegation crisis deepened with a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton.

The St Mary’s stalemate equalled Saints’ longest ever Premier League winless streak of 12 matches. The last time that happened was 1994/95.

Saints will go into the match at The Hawthorns still in the bottom three and with time running out to save themselves.

Pellegrino said: “Obviously for us to draw at home is not enough in this moment.

“I think the first 15 minutes we allowed them in the second ball to arrive to wide areas because they are a clinical team and in one ball they make a penalty.

“After the penalty I think we control totally the game.

“At the same time we couldn’t play quick enough to try to create more possibilities.

“We made some substitutions but little by little our anxiety doesn’t allow us to be in the right position in the right way to move the ball quick enough.

“It’s one point and obviously we are not happy with this.

“I think the team in the last five or six weeks was growing and we have to learn from this situation that every single detail at this level makes the difference.

“Now Saturday we have got another opportunity to try to win the game because right now we need to put three points on our table.”

There is inevitably even more pressure on Pellegrino and focus on his future, but he insisted: “I think I have got my energy thinking about trying to win this game.

“This is our reality now and sometimes football today is what happen today.

“I think the manager, the player, all the club are part of this club.

“We have to try to do our best to change this.

“I can’t say anything about that and we have lived difficult situations and this club knows about ups and downs and we have to keep pushing.

“We have I think a group of footballers ready, everybody fit except Charlie and I think we have potential to try to improve.”

Pellegrino tried to shake things up against Brighton with a double change at half time and unusually played two strikers, but it didn’t quite work.

“Some time to put more offensive people doesn’t mean you will dominate or play better,” he reflected.

“I think we arrive much more easier in the first half than the second to the by-line.

“We cross three or four times and I thought maybe with Carrillo into the box will be important but at the same time we lose this connection between the line with Dusan.

“Sometimes you have to choose and have to take a risk.

“After equalising we were really close to scoring the second, we control the game, defend well, control the counter attack.

“Today in Premier League every single team has this capacity and the level of organisation is really high and it’s not too easy to find this possibility.”

Premier League clubs spent a record £430million in the January transfer window

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs spent £430million in the January transfer window, nearly double the previous record of £225million, according to analysis by Deloitte.

Deadline day alone saw Premier League clubs complete deals totalling £150million, also a new record for the winter window, the accountancy firm said.

Premier League ins and outs: All done deals in January 2018 transfer window

Deloitte’s Sports Business Group estimates spending by Premier League clubs in the 2017/18 season to be a record £1.9billion, eclipsing last season’s record of £1.4billion.

Partner Dan Jones said: "Premier League clubs have taken the opportunity to refresh their squads in January before the decisive phase of the season.

“International trade has flourished, with the highest ever January gross overseas outlay in Premier League history (£260m), but also the highest amount of January receipts from abroad (£185m), with names such as Coutinho and Costa leaving the UK and Laporte and Aubameyang arriving from abroad.”

Brazil midfielder Philippe Coutinho moved from Liverpool to Barcelona after five seasons at Anfield, while Chelsea’s wantaway Spanish striker Diego Costa left for Atletico Madrid.

Manchester City spent £57m on Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signed for Arsenal for £56m.

Liverpool got in early to line up the costliest deal of the month, signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75m.

Jones said: "While another record-breaking season catches the eye, Premier League clubs’ expenditure continues to be well within their means in the context of revenue generated.

“Estimated 2017/18 net spend of £755m represents just 17% of forecast 2017/18 Premier League revenue, in line with the average over the 15 years since the first transfer window in January 2003, as clubs’ increase investment in players in proportion to the overall growth of the football business.”

A new January transfer window record for player sales was also set, with deals totalling £340million, leaving net transfer expenditure at £90million.

The winter transfer season usually sees the bulk of spending by clubs at the bottom of the league as they attempt to spend their way to survival from relegation, although the splurge seen in January is more akin to the summer window.

Nearly two thirds of the gross expenditure was by the top six, while the bottom six accounted for about a fifth.

Jones said: “Such is the level of competition for a coveted top-four position in the Premier League, as well as ongoing European battles, that top clubs have been willing to break with more traditional summer investment strategies to steal a march on their rivals mid-season, with several club transfer records being broken in this window.”
