Saints hopeful of signing Promes this summer after failed £25m bid

Show/hide article…

Southampton are confident that Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes will be a Saint one day - just not today.

Saints had several bids for the Dutchman, rising to £25million, knocked back but are convinced the player would like to come to St Mary’s and look set to reignite their interest in him over the summer.

Patience is the strategy and they’re not rushing to sign an alternative because they believe the 26-year-old is the right player for them.

The deal would have been for a club-record fee had it gone through, however, Spartak rejected Southampton’s bids with little hope of finding a replacement before the window closes.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s Saints have lacked a cutting edge in front of goal this season, possessing the seventh-worst goalscoring record in the Premier League, and were hoping to revive their survival hopes with Promes’ goals.

Promes has scored 10 in 17 Russian Premier League games this season, as well as two in the Champions League, while Southampton remain 19th and one point from safety.

Ollie Cook: Southampton loan defender to Barrow for remainder of the season

Show/hide article…

Premier League side Southampton have loaned defender Ollie Cook to National League club Barrow for the remainder of the season.

Centre-half Cook, 20, is yet to make a senior appearance for the Saints but has been regular in their Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy sides.

He signed a professional deal with Southampton in May 2016, having come through the youth system at St Mary’s.

The Bluebirds, who are 20th in the table, play Torquay United on Saturday.

Southampton 1-1 Brighton: Stephens rescues goal-shy Saints

Show/hide article…

As Mauricio Pellegrino reflected on a twelfth consecutive Premier League match without a victory, he paused for breath and let out a knowing nod.

‘I don’t want to be naive,’ the Southampton manager grimaced. ‘We need results. When the board has confidence in you in difficult situations, it is one of the most important victories.’

Southampton’s continued loyalty is admirable but for Pellegrino, matters grow ever more ominous. As relegation rivals Swansea and Bournemouth nobble the knees of high-flying opponents, Southampton’s malaise come into sharper focus.

Southampton actually played reasonably well here but once again, it was not enough and for Pellegrino, the simple facts of the matter were these.

He has been at the club seven months and taken this team from an 8th placed finish and EFL Cup final last season into the relegation zone. This winless stretch is the club’s longest run without a top-flight victory since March 1995.

The regression is stark and for a while, Brighton’s early lead, gained through a Glenn Murray penalty, promised to cast the death knell on the manager’s time at the club.

When the Southampton equaliser came, energy coursed through the stadium for the first time all evening. For Pellegrino, it offered hope of a dramatic revival. Yet it fizzled out, and that, unfortunately, has been the story all too often in Pellegrino’s tenure. Brief hope, lasting disappointment.

For an hour, Southampton probed their stubborn opponents for a way back into this game. Jack Stephens headed wide and Pierre-Emile Hobjbjerg hit the crossbar. Pellegrino played two of his cards at half-time, pulling Oriol Romeu and Dusan Tadic and introducing Sofiane Boufal and £19m January signing Guido Carrillo.

Rancour grew on the terraces. Fans became impatient when players failed to show for throw-ins and groaned when the ball was passed back to the goalkeeper. They booed at half-time and jeered every lapsed pass in the second.

The eventual equaliser was scruffy. James Ward-Prowse whipped in a low free-kick. It took one deflection, two deflections and Stephens then pounced with a backheel to turn it in.

Brighton at home is not a gimme but it is a handy fixture. Chris Hughton’s side were the lowest scoring team in the Premier League before this match with 17 goals. They have won one of their last 14 matches and failed to score in nine of those.

Yet Southampton made a dozy start and Brighton were the early risers. Jose Izquierdo should have scored within a minute but instead struck over the bar.

Brighton took the lead their start merited after 14 minutes. Izquierdo broke into the penalty area and teed up Solly March. As the winger turned smartly, Wesley Hoedt stuck out a leg and March went over. Murray finished coolly from the spot. It was the club’s first Premier League away goal for 10 hours and 15 minutes.

Hughton said: ‘We will always try and get that second goal but we were up against a good team.’

Southampton eventually raised themselves from the canvas. Ward-Prowse delivered a couple of teasing crosses into the penalty area. When Matthew Ryan’s clearance rebounded off Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s, it clattered into the cross-bar.

In the second-half, Stephens’ directed a free header wide of the goal. Then he turned one in. It was enough to rescue a point, but only the boardroom will decide if it is enough to preserve Pellegrino.

Southampton 1 Brighton 1: Jack Stephens rescues a point for Saints but relegation fears continue to grow

Show/hide article…

Southampton thought that a lingering cloud had been removed by selling Virgil van Dijk before the January transfer window had even opened but, five weeks on, the forecast around St Mary’s has only got gloomier.

The transfer window closed on Wednesday night with the club missing out on their main transfer target in Quincy Promes and still rooted in the relegation zone amid a winless sequence in the Premier League that now spans 12 games and more than two months.

Yes, it could have been even worse here having trailed for much of the game, following Glenn Murray’s first-half penalty, but the lack of confidence and attacking threat was striking in the subsequent struggle to translate their dominance of possession into clear chances.

West Bromwich Albion now await on Saturday and, while Southampton remain one of the few struggling clubs to have not already replaced their manager, that may just become a must-win game for Manuel Pellegrino. He might be well liked in both the boardroom and dressing-room but an urgency is beginning to develop about the situation.

Southampton have not had such a long sequence without winning in the Premier League since 1995. Pellegrino has repeatedly said that he does not fear for his job but acknowledged that a home draw was “not enough”.

Southampton 1-1 Brighton: Jack Stephens denies visitors victory

Show/hide article…

Jack Stephens’ flicked goal cancelled out Glenn Murray’s penalty as Southampton and Brighton played out a 1-1 draw which extends their winless runs.

The result means Southampton are now without victory in their last 12 league matches, while Brighton have not won any of their last six in the Premier League.

Despite all of Southampton’s time on the ball, they were unable to find a way past Brighton’s resolute defence as both sides left with a hard-fought point.

The hosts move up a relegation place into 18th, while Brighton go up a single position into 15th.

Brighton got off to a fast start and deservedly took the lead in the 14th minute, when Solly March was tripped up in the box by Wesley Hoedt and Murray sent Alex McCarthy the wrong way from the penalty spot.

The home side grew into the half and came very close to scoring just after the half-hour mark through Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Brighton’s Mathew Ryan was caught dawdling on the ball, with his lazy clearance blocked by the German midfielder before clattering off the crossbar.

Southampton continued to try and fashion out a clear shot on goal but found it difficult. Cedric’s sliced effort was easily collected by Ryan before Ezequiel Schelotto did well on the stroke of half-time to block out James Ward-Prowse’s look on goal.

Mauricio Pellegrino introduced forwards Guido Carrillo and Sofiane Boufal and both had a positive influence on the match, with Boufal winning the free-kick which resulted in Southampton’s equaliser in the 64th minute. Ward-Prowse’s low free-kick deflected off Jose Izquierdo and into the path of Stephens, who turned the ball in to score his second goal in as many games.

Southampton continued to push for goal, with Carrillo unleashing a shot from range that went narrowly over the bar and Hojbjerg having an attempt from distance that Ryan did well to clutch to his chest.

Southampton have failed to win any of their last 12 Premier League games (D7 L5) since beating Everton in November.

Brighton have picked up just two points in their last seven away Premier League matches (W0 D2 L5).

The Saints have lost only one of their last 28 home Premier League games against newly promoted clubs, but all three of their matches this season have ended as draws.

Glenn Murray has equalled his best scoring season in the Premier League (seven goals), also scoring seven in 2014-15 for Crystal Palace.

Three of Murray’s seven Premier League goals this season have been scored from the penalty spot, with only Sergio Aguero and Jamie Vardy (4) scoring more penalties in the Premier League this season.

Jack Stephens registered his first ever Premier League goal in his 30th appearance.

Boufal came off the bench after half-time and made an immediate impact on the game. His dangerous runs caused Schelotto problems down the left flank and drew plenty of fouls, including the one which resulted in Southampton’s equaliser.

His end product is still questionable, but he added the necessary attacking impetus Southampton needed after a first-half where their movement was laborious.

Mauricio Pellegrino: "After the goal we controlled the game totally. I don’t remember many chances of them but we didn’t play quick enough.

“We tried to break their defenders and they were really compact, deeper. For us, we didn’t play quick enough. But we scored this goal and we were a little bit lucky also. It was a really tight game.”

Chris Hughton: "We were well worthy of the point we got. When you play away, and with the players they’ve got, you’d expect them to have good possession and to threaten but I think we restricted to them to one half chance or so.

“We were resilient at what we did and had one very good opportunity and we took it once we got into that final third so overall I’m reasonably happy.”

Southampton travel to face Alan Pardew’s West Brom on Saturday at 3pm. Brighton, meanwhile, take on West Ham at home at the same time.

Stephens on target again but Saints held

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men started slowly and fell behind to Glenn Murray’s 15th minute penalty, but dominated the second half in a bid to turn the tide.

Stephens duly flicked home James Ward-Prowse’s low free kick 20 minutes after the interval, but plenty of pressure was not converted into a killer second goal.

Pellegrino made one change to his starting line-up following the Emirates FA Cup victory over Watford, a result that extended Saints’ unbeaten run to four games.

Ward-Prowse was recalled in place of Sofiane Boufal, with new signing Guido Carrillo among the substitute as Shane Long continued to lead the line.

Brighton, attacking towards a boisterous away following in the first half, carved out the first chance inside the opening minute.

Solomon March escaped down the right and squared the ball across the box towards Murray, inadvertently finding opposite winger Jose Izquierdo in the process.

It was a clear opportunity for the Colombian, but he leant back at the vital moment and skied his shot high over the crossbar.

The visitors continued to enjoy the better start, and took a crucial lead on 14 minutes.

After Oriol Romeu headed a Ward-Prowse corner over the crossbar, Albion got back on the attack and Izquierdo found March in the box, who sharply turned away from Wesley Hoedt and went down under the Dutchman’s trailing leg.

Referee Mike Dean pointed to the spot, and up stepped Murray to send Alex McCarthy the wrong way.

Saints did show more intent as the first half wore on, but were just missing that clinical edge.

When Pierre-Emile Højbjerg had the chance to feed Dušan Tadić, he overhit the pass, while Ryan Bertrand sent a cross into the stand from an intelligent first-time pass from Steven Davis that set him free down the left.

Bertrand threatened to make amends when he went for goal from a tight angle soon after, driving his shot fractionally over.

A bit of luck would not go amiss either. When goalkeeper Mathew Ryan’s clearance struck the charging Højbjerg, the ball cannoned against the face of the crossbar.

Shane Long was first to react only to be denied by a last-ditch tackle on the rebound, before Stephens headed over from the resulting corner.

Another Ward-Prowse delivery was cleverly pulled back to the edge of the box for Bertrand, but the pass was bobbling slightly and the defender could not keep his shot down.

Pellegrino responded to a frustrating half with a double substitution before the restart, as Boufal and Carrillo were summoned to replace Romeu and Tadić.

Ward-Prowse’s crosses had represented Saints’ best chance of scoring, and that trend continued after the interval.

When the midfielder was afforded too much space on the left side of the box, he delivered plum on to the forehead of Stephens, who spurned the chance to make it two goals in two games by nodding wide from eight yards.

But the two would combine again 20 minutes into the second period, this time to deadly effect.

From a free kick wide on the left, Ward-Prowse fizzed one in low and slightly behind Stephens, who had the foresight to help it on with a deft backheel hardly befitting a central defender. Ryan could only stand and watch.

Meanwhile, Carrillo was putting himself about, and tried his luck from 30 yards with a vicious strike that rose too high but demonstrated his positivity.

Having partnered Long for just over half an hour, he had a new foil in Manolo Gabbiadini for the final 12 minutes as Saints chased the winner they craved.

Virtually the entire second half was being played in Brighton territory, but clear sights of goal remained at a surplus.

Boufal probed, committing defenders without quite prising them open, while Ward-Prowse continued to wrap his foot around crosses without finding his target.

When Davis surged forward from midfield you sensed Carrillo’s big moment might come, but the striker could not collect the pass in his stride and the chance of victory came and went.

Jack Stephens’ equaliser earns struggling Southampton a point against Brighton

Show/hide article…

Under the supermoon rising above St Mary’s, the football was down to earth in every sense.

Whether an uninspiring south coast squabble proves to be one small step towards safety or a giant leap through the trapdoor remains to be seen.

In the end, Saints were grateful for defender Jack Stephens’ second goal in as many games for the small mercy of a point.

But neither manager was moonwalking along the touchline, although Brighton boss Chris Hughton was probably the more grateful for his end of the deal.

Albion had already squandered a glorious chance in the opening 30 seconds, Jose Izquierdo aiming for the stars from a Pascal Gross cut-back and nearly hitting the moon, before the visitors drew first blood.

Wesley Hoedt’s trip on Solly March in the box after 13 minutes was as clear as the sky at night and Glenn Murray buried his ninth goal of the season from the penalty spot.

Murray had scored the winner at Middlesbrough in the FA Cup fourth round at the weekend, just days after helping police with their enquiries into allegations of a £1m tax fraud.

But there are few complaints at the Amex about his returns – 30 goals in 54 starts – since his second coming with the Seagulls.

Southampton’s early dithering turned trepidation into open revolt among the home support, and it is hard to see how a season of infuriating inconsistency under Mauricio Pellegrino’s management represents an upgrade on a top-eight finish and Wembley cup final on Claude Puel’s watch last year.

The closest Saints came to an equaliser before the break owed nothing to creativity and everything to persistence as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg charged down Albion keeper Matt Ryan’s clearance and the ricochet cannoned off the bar.

Heavily reliant on James Ward-Prowse’s set piece delivery and riddled with more anxiety than chickens crossing the road, the only thing polished about this Saints display was their head coach’s shiny brogues in the dugout.

The crescendo of boos told its own grievous story for Pellegrino, for whom a double substitution at the interval had an element of desperation.

Record £19.2 million signing Guido Carrillo helped to crank up the pressure on Brighton, who were in full retreat like the tide going out.

Southampton spurned a fine chance when Stephens sent an unmarked header drifting wide from Ward-Prowse’s cross, but the same combination led to an untidy equaliser after 64 minutes.

This time, JWP’s free-kick came in low and Stephens – whose birthday winner against Watford in the Cup was his first for the club – provided the critical touch again.

Southampton snatch equaliser against Brighton but remain in bottom three

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s Jack Stephens had played 38 games for the club without scoring before netting the winner against Watford in the FA Cup on Saturday. He clearly enjoyed the experience as he did it again last night to give Saints a share of the points in the south coast derby.

Brighton had gone in front with Glenn Murray’s first-half penalty but failed to build on their good start and allowed the home side back into the game. Nevertheless, they were probably happier with the result, which keeps them above their hosts, who have not won in 12 Premier League games and remain in deep trouble.

With both teams struggling for form and goals, the match promised little. Each had signed Argentinian forwards during the transfer window in an attempt to boost poor scoring records, but Guido Carrillo of Saints and Brighton’s Leo Ulloa began the match on the bench.

Brighton, though, should have been ahead in the first minute. Glenn Murray headed on to Pascal Gross, and his low cross from the right found Jose Izquierdo unmarked at the far post. But the Colombian winger’s first-time shot was closer to the roof of the stand than the roof of the net.

Southampton’s nerves resulted in plenty of sloppy passes straight to opponents but Brighton were incapable of taking advantage and usually unable to deliver the right final ball, although a forward prod by Gross was almost turned into his own net by Jack Stephens.

But after 13 minutes they were in front. Izquierdo charged onto Gross’s pass and forced his way into the penalty area on the left, and as Solly March tried to turn on his pass, he was tripped by Wesley Hoedt. Murray beat Alex McCarthy confidently from the penalty to score Brighton’s first league goal on the road in seven games.

Saints came back and Lewis Dunk produced an acrobatic clearance to prevent Shane Long from reaching a cross by James Ward-Prowse. Ryan Bertrand, who had been a doubt before the match with a hamstring injury sustained in Saturday’s FA Cup victory over Watford, was inches high with an angled shot from 15 yards, and Brighton goalkeeper Maty Ryan had to rush from his line to gather when Dunk misjudged a through ball.

The Australian’s bravery on that occasion meant that he deserved his luck when his attempted clearance cannoned off Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg but rebounded from the crossbar. It would have been a fluke of the streakiest order if the ball had gone in, but it roused a home crowd who had become decidedly restless.

Saints responded by ending the first half on the attack, and they should have levelled early in the second half when Stephens escaped his marker but headed wide. He made up for that miss though, getting his heel to Ward-Prowse’s mis-hit free kick after 64 minutes, the ball bouncing in off the far post. Yet again Brighton had failed to defend a set play, although there seemed to be more than a touch of fortune about the ball’s route into goal.

Both teams had chances after that but a draw was both a fair and a predictable result even if the game had been better than form had suggested.

Pellegrino’s focus turns to West Brom

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is already looking ahead to Saturday’s trip to West Brom after seeing his Southampton side held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Brighton at St Mary’s.

The Seagulls snatched an early lead from the penalty spot through Glenn Murray, giving them something to hold on to with Saints needing three points to leapfrog the visitors in the Premier League table.

Home pressure increased after the interval, as Saints drew level through Jack Stephens’s second goal in two games, but a priceless winning goal proved elusive for Pellegrino’s men.

“I think in the first 15 minutes they were a little bit better in direct play,” said the boss.

“They won some second balls and from this situation we conceded a penalty.

“After the goal, we totally controlled the game, but we couldn’t play quick enough to break through their defenders.

“Little by little they would drop and for us, it was really difficult to find the space to create more chances.

“We were patient and well organised because I don’t remember many actions from them, so in defence we controlled them well most of the time.

“In this situation, every single victory is massive, but we have to keep pushing and on Saturday we have another opportunity.”

Davis: Slow start cost us

Show/hide article…

From then, it was an uphill struggle for the home side who had Jack Stephens to thank for the second time in five days after the defender’s flicked equaliser in the second half.

“It’s so important to start quickly at home and get on the front foot but we didn’t do that tonight,” Davis said.

“We were a goal behind early on and Brighton were difficult to break down. Overall, we showed enough of a reaction to eventually get back level but we couldn’t find a touch of quality in the final third to get a winner.”

Despite Wednesday night’s stalemate, the captain remains confident that Saints have the requisite quality to pull clear of danger in the coming weeks.

“We knew how important a result would have been here against a team that’s near us in the table. We simply haven’t won enough games; I believe there is a lot of quality in this dressing room and we shouldn’t be in this position. It’s up to us to pull ourselves out of it.

“We’ve shown some signs of progression but we need start performing for a full 90 minutes and turn one point into three. All we can do is try and find the positives in games and look to push forwards in the next few weeks.”

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton were too slow in 1-1 draw with Brighton

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton were too slow in 1-1 draw with Brighton

Mauricio Pellegrino says his Southampton side were too slow after their 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Brighton took the lead thanks to Glenn Murray’s penalty in the 14th minute, but Southampton found an equaliser through Jack Stephens midway through the second half from a set-piece.

The result means Southampton are now winless in their last 12 Premier League matches and Pellegrino believes his side were too slow to get the ball forward despite dominating possession at St Mary’s.

“I don’t remember many chances for them but we didn’t play quick enough,” he told Sky Sports after the match.

"We tried to break their defenders and they were really compact and played much deeper [than us].

“For us, we didn’t play quick enough. But we scored this goal and we were a little bit lucky also. It was a really tight game.”

The 1-1 draw means Southampton have moved up one position into 18th in the Premier League table.

Southampton have won just once away from home all season in the Premier League and Pellegrino believes they need to pick up more points on the road if they are going to survive.

He added: "The Premier League now, little by little, will be more tight but I think until the end we have to keep pushing.

"On Saturday we’ve got another opportunity against West Brom. It will be really difficult but I think we had to learn from today and keep going.

“It’s really important we pick up results because we leave a lot of points at home and we have to try and do something away.”

Pellegrino: Saints unlucky in transfer pursuit

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino believes Saints got “unlucky” in the January transfer window.

The Saints boss admitted he had hoped to make more than just one signing after the £75m sale of Virgil van Dijk was announced at the end of December.

Though Saints did break their club record transfer fee to bring in £19.2m striker Guido Carrillo there were no further arrivals at St Mary’s.

Saints had also targeted an attacking midfielder, and initially went after Theo Walcott but lost out to Everton.

They then turned their attentions to Quincy Promes.

After refusing to pay his entire release clause upfront, they came to a compromise with Spartak Moscow, and the player was understood to be ready to join, but the Russian club pulled out, citing difficulties in getting a replacement.

When asked if he had expected more than one arrival after the early sale of van Dijk, Pellegrino replied: “I think so but I think we were a little bit unlucky in some aspects.

“Why? Because some players really close and at the end the other part of the negotiation say no.

“January when every single day that is passing and you have to bring important players the other club needs time to move and replace him.

“Little by little it is getting worse and bringing players with capacity is not easy.”

January proved a testing transfer window for many Premier League clubs who started off with grand plans but ultimately struggled to get more than one or two players through the door.

Pellegrino certainly sensed it was a particularly difficult market.

“Obviously every single squad can improve with other players but it’s not too easy to choose one player and bring them into the squad,” he admitted.

“In the last two years I think the market changed a lot after Pogba and Neymar.

“The market is huge and every single player from South America and Asia the transfer fees are massive.

“Some player we can but others we cannot.

“If we bring somebody else it is because we are sure he can improve our squad, otherwise what is the point?”

Pellegrino brought on his sole January signing, Carrillo, at half time in the draw with Brighton, and is now readying him for a first start at West Brom.

“We test him and talk to him about this possibility but with the staff we arrive to the conclusion he is 30 or 45 minutes and ready for Saturday,” he reported.

“In Monaco he didn’t train the last two weeks, training alone, and it’s not the same. Just for this reason.”

Davis looks to “massive” West Brom game

Show/hide article…

Saints missed the opportunity to climb out of the relegation zone on Wednesday night, as they drew 1-1 at home with Brighton.

After that disappointment, attention quickly turns to this weekend’s trip to bottom-placed side West Brom.

“Between now and the end of the season, every game is going to be massive,” said Davis. "There’s a lot of teams fighting for the same objective.

"We haven’t won enough games this season, we’ve got to be honest with ourselves, but we’ve got quality there that can get ourselves out of this position and it’s only us that can do that.

“We’ve got a lot of games coming up like this one, and the game [against Brighton] was exactly like that.”

While West Brom may be at the foot of the table, Davis expects a more confident side than that position suggests, especially following their FA Cup win at Liverpool last weekend.

"They got a lot of confidence from the result last week against Liverpool, so it’s going to be tough, but we have to show our qualities and try to go in there to get the three points, because that’s the only thing that’s going to get us out of this position.

“It’s not a position we want to be in and we just need to keep pushing ourselves to try to get out of that and stay together, and I’m sure we’ll do that.”
