Huddersfield 0-0 Southampton: Pellegrino hails Saints spirit

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino was delighted with the character shown by his side as Saints put their Carabao Cup humbling against Wolves behind them to fight out an entertaining goalless draw at Huddersfield.

Saints had to dig deep to contain the Terriers, who are flying high in a honeymoon period after their promotion, and then started to dominate in the second half.

They almost won it as Ryan Bertrand had a header cleared off the line in stoppage time, but going into the international break Saints are unbeaten in the Premier League with a win and two draws in the top flight.

Pellegrino said: “It was a really tough game from the beginning.

“Huddersfield right now is a team with a really high mentality, they are really strong in second balls and long balls in aerial play with big players and some deliveries from three-quarters.

“They create some problems and at the same time in the first half we have two chances clear to score and in the second half, especially when we had the ball, we were better than them, and we had three or four chances to win the game.

“We could win, we could lose, maybe, but it was a really tough.

“The best thing for us was we showed great character for 90 minutes and we got one point and we have to keep going.”

Pellegrino helped his side get control with tactical changes at the break and revealed: “I move a little bit higher Mario (Lemina) and Steven (Davis) and I put Oriol (Romeu) close to the centre backs to help a little bit in aerial play. I think we were better.

“After I change again because I see some players a little bit tired to put fresh people, fresh legs, and I think we finished better than them.

“The best news is we can compete in a tough game, we can control the opponent when we manage the ball, and in the first three games I think we deserve to win the first two. This was really tough but we could win, we could also lose. Typical Premier League game.”

International calls continue

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand has been named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying fixtures against Malta and Slovakia.

There could well be a clash of two Saints players over the break, as Dušan Tadić and Serbia are billed to play Shane Long and the Republic of Ireland in a top-of-the-group World Cup qualifier.

Before that fixture, however, both sides must face the bottom two teams in Group D. With Serbia hosting Moldova and Ireland travelling to Georgia.

Steven Davis and Northern Ireland are also set to play qualifying fixtures against San Marino before a crucial clash with Czech Republic, whilst Cedric and Portugal face the Faroe Islands and Hungary in the same competition.

Maya Yoshida, Manolo Gabbiadini and Wesley Hoedt will also represent Japan, Italy and Holland respectively in their World Cup qualifiers over the break.

Elsewhere, Jan Bednarek will represent Poland’s senior squad for the first time, as they visit Denmark and host Kazakhstan in a pair of World Cup qualifiers.

Cédric has also been called up by Portugal, as they tackle Faroe Islands and Hungary in a pair of qualifiers, whilst Jake Vokins has received his first call-up into the England Under-18s squad ahead of their games with Brazil and South Africa.

Full list of call-ups

Manolo Gabbiadini – Italy

Ryan Bertrand – England

Steven Davis – Northern Ireland

Dušan Tadić – Serbia

Cédric – Portugal

Maya Yoshida – Japan

Jan Bednarek – Poland

Shane Long – Republic of Ireland (Provisional)

Wesley Hoedt – Netherlands (Provisional)

Jake Vokins – England Under-18s

This list will be updated as and when players are selected.

Mauricio Pellegrino rues missed chances after Southampton held at Huddersfield

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino bemoaned Southampton’s failure to convert their chances after they were held at Huddersfield on Saturday.

Nathan Redmond wasted an early one-on-one for the visitors while Ryan Bertrand saw a late header cleared off the line as the two sides played out a 0-0 draw at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Southampton have failed to score in eight of their last 11 Premier League games, scoring just seven goals from 144 shots in those matches.

Under Pellegrino, they have been held scoreless in three of their four matches in all competitions and the Saints boss wants better efficiency in front of goal.

On Bertrand’s late opportunity, Pellegrino said: “It was an incredible action. We were really close to winning but this is football. It is efficiency, we had to score.”

Huddersfield largely dominated the first half and had chances themselves through Steve Mounie and Thomas Ince.

Pellegrino added: "It could have been three points, one point or nil because it was really tough in the beginning.

"Huddersfield are really well prepared especially in their style of play. The long ball and second ball and in crosses we were in trouble at some moments.

"At the same time we had two chances in the first half and in the end, the last 15 or 20 minutes, we put them under pressure with our chances.

“We had two or three clear chances. There were some moments for us and some moments for them.”

Pellegrino also refused to be drawn on a late penalty appeal for James Ward-Prowse, who tumbled under the challenge of Mathias Jorgensen.

“It was a difficult situation,” he continued. “We were watching on the TV two or three times since and it was difficult for us [to tell]. We have to respect the decision of the referee.”

Southampton have been active in the transfer market this summer and recent arrival Wesley Hoedt was an unused substitute at Huddersfield.

On the prospect of further signings before Thursday’s deadline, Pellegrino said: “We never know. If someone that’s important for us is ready to come and can improve us, we will be ready.”

Yeovil 2-0 Coventry: Home comforts for Glovers

Show/hide article…

Coventry lost their second successive Sky Bet League Two match as goals in either half from Rhys Browne and Olufela Olomola sealed a 2-0 victory for Yeovil.

The visitors started strongly and within 30 seconds of kick-off, Jodi Jones had forced a sharp save from Artur Krysiak after he breezed past Bevis Mugabi all too easily.

Despite being on the back foot it was actually Yeovil who took the lead against the run of play after 27 minutes. A hopeful ball over the top from Otis Khan caused a mix-up between Chris Stokes and goalkeeper Liam O’Brien who collided, leaving Browne to knock it into an empty net.

Coventry pushed for the equaliser in the second half and went close as a Tony Andreu free-kick hit the post and a Marc McNulty header was kept out by Krysiak.

But Olomola settled any nerves for the home side in the 75th minute as he burst past Liam Kelly into the box and fired it low past O’Brien.
