Revealed! Birmingham’s stunning £43k-a-week loan deal for one-goal Prem striker

Show/hide article…

Birmingham City 's season-long loan deal for rookie Southampton striker Sam Gallagher will cost the Championship club a staggering £43,000 a week.

The Blues beat Midlands rivals Aston Villa, Wolves and Derby to ex-England Under-20 international Gallagher – but only after agreeing to cough up the kind of cash that proves how money madness has infected the transfer market.

Sunday Mirror Sport has learned that Birmingham will pay Saints a £1.2million ‘rental’ fee for a player who scored his only top-flight goal more than three years ago.

They are also handing Gallagher, 21, a hefty increase on the £10,000-a-week deal he banked when signing a new four-year contract at St Mary’s last month. He will now earn £18,000 a week playing for Harry Redknapp this season.

Birmingham have also shelled out another £200,000 in agent’s fees for the deal to be brokered.

Southampton’s initial demand to send Gallagher out on loan was £2m – but they reduced their asking price when there were no takers.

Gallagher’s temporary transfer – one of dozens of loan deals completed this summer – illustrates how much lower-division clubs are prepared to gamble in a desperate scramble to hit the £200m Premier League jackpot.

The cash sums Birmingham are lavishing on one player – who scored just 12 goals in 47 appearances for Blackburn as they were relegated last season – are becoming the rule rather than the exception.

A source, who is involved at the business end of the player-recruitment industry, said: “Loan deals were introduced to help clubs in times of an emergency.

"Then it was used as a means of allowing young players to gain experience at a lower level. Now, with more money than ever swilling around football, the system is just another way for all parties involved to line their pockets.

“Sometimes that can be to the detriment of the clubs, sometimes to the detriment of the players. But some clubs are taking huge financial risks.

“It wouldn’t be such a gamble if payments and bonuses were linked to success. But payments on loan deals are front-loaded – with clubs often forced to give players minutes on the pitch because agreements have penalties attached if players do not make enough appearances.

“Those financial pressures often force managers to pick players they do not want in their team. Payments should not be made up front and clubs should not be financially punished if the manager takes the decision to leave a certain player out.

“The money being paid for loan deals should be linked to success and made payable at the end of the season.”

There have been calls for loans deals in the Premier League to be scrapped at a time when the clubs bank in excess of £100m every season from TV revenues.

Many top sides look to send players to lower-division clubs in a bid to give them minutes on the pitch in a competitive environment. Some are often forced to go to teams against their will, while others use a loan deal as a means of getting a wage rise.

The insider added: “Too many loan deals are being done to generate money – be that for a club, an agent or a player – and often aren’t being arranged to benefit the footballer’s development.

“The arrangement needs to be looked into and governed properly.”

10 Premier League deals that could still happen

Show/hide article…

The transfer window slams shut on Thursday night and teams are running out of time to secure their last-minute signings.

A number of Premier League sides are yet to conclude various deals while some are trying to plug gaps after sustaining injuries.

Here, Sportsmail’s Simon Jones assesses 10 deals that could still happen.

Experienced 26-year-old Mexico international has become a target for Everton as they consider their centre-forward options, though they would prefer a loan.

Mauricio Pochettino wants the full back at Tottenham. Yet, with a pending court case, he needs a work permit and permission to enter the country.

Bidding is at £32m for the 27-year-old England international who is ready to join Chelsea.

The pacy Ghanaian forward has had interest from West Ham, Brighton, West Brom and Fulham but is closing on a £9m move to Burnley.

Has one year left on contract, is wanted by Chelsea and Tottenham but is out injured for three months.

Hull had an £11m bid rejected for the striker, 23, while Brighton proposed £12m plus add-ons. Everton are keen too.

Chelsea have had a £30m bid rejected and will return. Liverpool are ready to step in but £180,000 a week is a lot.

West Brom are trying after giving up on Kevin Wimmer but have limited funds, unless Manchester City pay up on Jonny Evans. Sakho would prefer Crystal Palace.

Atletico Madrid are favoured though they have yet to agree a fee. Everton, Monaco and Marseille are considering a loan.

Arsenal have spoken to him and could lose Shkodran Mustafi to Inter Milan. Chelsea also like the Dutchman but Liverpool is his preferred destination.

Virgil van Dijk sacks agent in late attempt to force Liverpool or Chelsea move - report

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is still trying to force through a move to either Liverpool or Chelsea

The Dutchman has been involved in an ongoing transfer saga throughout the summer.

And while Southampton are determined not to sell, Van Dijk is doing all he can to force his way out.

Liverpool were forced to apologise after an alleged illegal approach, while Chelsea are yet to bid.

But both teams are still in the hunt, and Van Dijk is taking matters into his own hands.

According to The Irish Independent, the 26-year-old has dumped his agent and is trying to break the terms of his Southampton contract.

Arsenal ‘still hopeful of securing two huge signings’

Show/hide article…

Arsenal are yet to give up on signing Virgil van Dijk and Thomas Lemar, according to reports.

The Gunners could be forced into making additions if the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Shkodran Mustafi leave before the window shuts on Thursday.

According to The Sun , Arsenal could splash the cash to make sure they do not leave themselves short.

But they are also reportedly willing to bide their time to ensure that they get the right deal - even if it means waiting until January before making a move.

Arsenal will sell Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Chelsea this week — because they consider Liverpool too much of a threat to their top-four hopes.

Chelsea are willing to pay £40million for the Gunners’ midfield star, who is also wanted by Kop manager Jurgen Klopp.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger does not want Oxlade-Chamberlain to leave, but the England ace is determined to quit the Emirates before the window closes.

Wenger sees Chelsea as serious title challengers, with or without the Ox, but reckons Liverpool could struggle to push for a top-four slot with Champions League fixtures to negotiate and does not want to strengthen their chances.

Champions Chelsea are willing to meet Arsenal’s asking price for a player who has turned down a £180,000-a-week contract offer in the past few days.

Manchester City 's hopes of signing Alexis Sanchez have been given an unlikely boost — after Leicester made a £27million swoop for Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend .

That could spark a domino effect, which might end with City boss Pep Guardiola prising Sanchez away from Arsenal before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Thursday — despite Arsene Wenger’s vow not to sell the Chilean.

Leicester are closing in on a deal for Townsend, which would then open the door for Riyad Mahrez ’s departure from the 2016 champions.

If Arsenal can beat Roma to signing Mahrez – the Moroccan star is refusing to commit himself to a move to Italy in the hope that the Gunners firm up their interest with a bid — it will pave the way for City to finally make a £50m move for Sanchez.

Guardiola is hoping everything falls his way as he looks to add more firepower to his squad.

But his plans depend on Wenger recruiting a big-name replacement.

WATCH: Huddersfield 0-0 Southampton highlights

Show/hide article…

Huddersfield extended their unbeaten start to life in the Premier League with a goalless draw at home to Southampton.

The Terriers launched their first top-flight season in four decades with two straight victories and despite being held by the Saints in an entertaining stalemate, head coach David Wagner will be delighted with his side’s return going into the international break.

Both sides had chances to snatch the points. Steve Mounie and Thomas Ince went closest for the home side, while Town skipper Tommy Smith cleared Ryan Bertrand’s late header off the line.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side, who also extended their unbeaten league record, arrived full of intent but will be grateful to have left the John Smith’s Stadium with a point.

Saints could swoop for new signing

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has opened the way for a potential late transfer swoop at Saints after admitting the club have found a few potentially interesting options.

The Saints boss seemed resigned to the fact he would continue with the same squad until at least January when speaking before the goalless draw against Huddersfield, which continued the team’s unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign.

But after the match he appeared markedly more upbeat about the possibility of securing a fresh face before midnight on Thursday, though did caution that a deal could still evade the club.

He said: “I think we are ready to see what will happen because in the last three or four days there are some good players that can move.

“If there is someone we decide that can improve the squad and is ready to come with us, to share with us our squad, we will be ready.

“We never know. We cannot manage the market.

“It is really difficult to bring in good players. They are really expensive, a lot of money.

“If it’s in the Southampton way we will be there.”

One major talking point in the next few days will inevitably be the future of Virgil van Dijk.

Saints have insisted all along that the centre half will not be sold despite his transfer request.

Pellegrino was definitive in his latest response when he replied: “I think September 1 Virgil will be with us.”

Forster is “one of the best”

Show/hide article…

Fraser Forster remains one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers despite his omission from the England squad, according to Mauricio Pellegrino.

Forster was left out of Gareth Southgate’s latest squad despite the England boss naming four stoppers.

It is a blow for Forster who has enjoyed an up and down year or so but has the total backing of the Saints manager.

“We were talking with the goalkeeping coach about the situation but it was really close to the game,” said Pellegrino of Forster’s omission.

“He is experienced and sometimes you have to live this type of situation.

“Football is like life. Everything can change suddenly.

“It is something we have to know, all of us, you can win, you can lose, you can be in the top, you can be in the bottom. It’s like life.”

Pellegrino refused to criticise Southgate’s decision and said: “I can talk about Fraser as a Southampton goalkeeper. I don’t have any opinion about the national team. This question is not for me.

“I respect the decision of the manager of the national team.

“I can work with Fraser to improve every single day.

“Fraser is for me one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. He is with us and I have to support him but we have to respect the decision of the manager of the national team.”

Forster made some good stops to help Saints keep a clean sheet and bag a draw at Huddersfield.

It left Saints heading into the international break unbeaten in the Premier League this season, and Pellegrino with an impression that he is making progress.

“Hopefully,” he admitted. “You never know the performance of the team. Sometimes you are getting better, sometimes you are getting worse.

“It is not maths. Football is a game where participate human beings and sometimes are in a good way, the confidence is high.

“I am happy because we were working really hard this week after the defeat in the Cup and for this reason, in this way, I think we will improve I am sure.”

Ward-Prowse: We stood up to the fight

Show/hide article…

Saints earned a point against a buoyant Terriers side, who have started their first Premier League season in sensational fashion, with the visitors going close to claiming a victory in the closing stages.

Ward-Prowse, who was introduced as a second-half substitute, felt the team showed a good bit of fight in Yorkshire.

"I think before the game we knew it was going to be a tough test, and we knew it wasn’t only going to be a football match but a battle as well,” he said.

"I think we stood up to the fight and it was important that we didn’t lose the game, even though I think we deserved to win it at the end.

"I think we’ve improved game by game and we showed our resilience. I think it’s important we carry on along that pathway and make sure that we keep doing the things that we’ve been doing.”

Ward-Prowse had an appeal for a penalty turned down late on, claiming he was tripped by Huddersfield’s Zanka.

"I cut inside and felt something on my left foot but it’s the referee’s decision at the end of the day and we had to obviously get on with the referee’s decision and make sure we focused on the last few minutes,” he added.

Character pleases Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Saints halted the Terriers’ incredible momentum, as the newly-promoted side saw their perfect start to the Premier League season ended.

The visitors could not quite do enough, however, to claim all three points.

While Pellegrino was disappointed at that, he had no issues with the attitude shown by his players, as they continued their unbeaten start to their top-flight campaign.

“I think the best news for us is we deserved to win the first two games (against Swansea and West Ham),” he said.

“Today we couldn’t win. We could lose maybe, but we were there fighting until the end with character and this is the best news for us.”

Saints now have a two-week gap before playing again, with many of the squad heading off on international duty.

“In one side, ten or 11 players will be out and will come back two days before the next game, but, at the same time, it’s enough time to work together to try to have a better connection,” said the Saints boss.
