Huddersfield 0-0 Southampton: Wagner’s men maintain unbeaten start

Show/hide article

The final whistle had barely subsided when Huddersfield’s stadium announcer took the microphone to release two snippets of news.

First up was the attendance. There were 23,548 inside this raucous ground for the visit of Southampton and they were thanked for their support. Then, in the next sentence, came the big announcement.

‘Town fans,’ he boomed after the 0-0 draw. ‘You’re top of the league!’

In that particular moment, it was an indisputable fact. At 5pm, after three rounds of matches, the pre-season favourites for relegation sat looking down on everyone else, undefeated with seven points and not a goal conceded.

Maximum points from their opening two assignments has served to whip up the euphoria that has swept around this town since May and the noise before kick-off reflected the buoyancy and optimism of supporters.

Home form, inevitably, will prove critical in the final reckoning next spring and if Huddersfield are to defy the odds, the importance of making home advantage count whenever possible is paramount - that’s precisely what Burnley did last season.

It was no surprise, then, to see them start off with such energy and enthusiasm, following the high intensity demands of their manager to the letter. They pressed and they pestered and left Mauricio Pellegrino, in the Southampton dugout, hopping in frustration.

Pellegrino has not had an easy introduction to life managing in England, with the Virgil van Dijk saga and a first-round elimination from the Carabao Cup significant bumps in the road, but he should really have seen his team strike first here.

For all that the hosts dominated possession, they were carved open when Maya Yoshida fed Steven Davis and the captain split Huddersfield’s defence with a perfect ball that allowed Nathan Redmond to surge forward but his shot, which beat Jonas Lossl, curled away at the last minute.

It would prove to be the only meaningful sight of goal they got until the closing stages. Huddersfield’s issue, though, was failing to make their dominance count and when Wagner looks back at replays, he will appreciate his team could have been out of sight by half-time.

In the 19th minute, for instance, a fine double save from Fraser Forster - who will have caught the eye of the watching FA Technical Director Dan Ashworth - thwarted Steve Mounie and Elias Kachunga after Huddersfield had worked an opening down Southampton’s right.

Forster was needed again in the next attack, which was started by a superb throw out from Huddersfield keeper Lossl - he rushed into action like a quarterback looking for his wide receiver - that sent Kachunga scuttling past Jonathon Lemina but Mounie could not convert the cross.

Another direct approach in the 34th minute enabled Huddersfield to get in behind Southampton once again but Tom Ince had too much to do after Tommy Smith’s ball found him, his left-foot volley being beaten away by Forster.

The second period continued in a similar vein. Huddersfield’s tempo never relented and the introduction of Kasey Palmer, the Chelsea loanee, was crucial in maintaining that; one thumping tackle on Southampton defender Jack Stephens had the crowd roaring its approval.

There were more opportunities – Palmer, Kachunga and Mounie all had sightings – but none of them were clear enough to threaten Forster and the longer the game progressed, the more the feeling grew that Southampton would pilfer something late on.

Perhaps they should have done. James Ward-Prowse, on as a substitute for Manolo Gabbiadini, had a penalty appeal waved away – a decision that left Pellegrino raging – while Redmond was once again thwarted by Lossl when it seemed for all the world he would score.

That came in the 86th minute but there was still time for one more opportunity and Ryan Bertrand will be wondering how he never profited when he charged to get on the end of a cross but Smith, Huddersfield’s captain, appeared to kick the England left-back’s header off the line.

Defeat would have been horribly cruel but teams with a sharper cutting edge than Southampton will not be so lenient. Huddersfield deserve every word of praise that comes their way but Wagner will know the hard work is just about to begin.

Saints keep unbeaten start going

Show/hide article

Following the opening-day draw at home to Swansea and the 3-2 win over West Ham at St Mary’s, Saints went on the road for the first time this season and battled out a 0-0 draw with the Terriers.

Huddersfield had come into this game flying, with two wins from two for the newly-promoted club, but Mauricio Pellegrino’s side were able to halt some of their momentum.

Pellegrino named an unchanged XI from the side that beat West Ham 3-2 last weekend, with new signing Wesley Hoedt earning a place among the substitutes.

Saints created the first big opportunity of the afternoon as a superb Steven Davis pass released Nathan Redmond down the inside-left.

He charged down on goal, but bent his low shot just wide of the far post, as Terriers keeper Jonas Lössl came out to narrow the angle.

Davis was proving an extremely influential presence, and he nearly got in on goal himself, as DuĆĄan Tadić’s cleverly-weighted pass picked out his run in behind, only for Chris Löwe to make a superb saving tackle.

At the other end, Maya Yoshida had to make a crucial intervention to deny Elias Kachunga, as he got onto a low cross six yards out, before Fraser Forster did brilliantly to reach a dangerous cross just ahead of Steve Mounié.

Having been a threat at one end, Davis then had to play an important role at the other in the 23rd minute, as Kachunga’s cutback found Rajiv van La Parra in space 16 yards out. His low shot was heading for the bottom corner, but the Saints midfielder stuck out a leg to divert it clear.

The Terriers were beginning to threaten more by this stage, and Mounié saw a shot bobble just wide after 31 minutes, before Forster had to fling himself to his right shortly afterwards to make a fine stop from Tom Ince, flicking his angled shot from the corner of the area just wide of the far post.

Forster had to make another good stop with five minutes of the half left, having spilled Löwe’s left-wing cross straight into the path of Kachunga, redeeming himself by turning away the Terriers player’s first-time shot.

The last action of the first half saw Oriol Romeu booked for an aerial challenge on Zanka, as the sides went in level at the break.

Saints carved out the first opening after the restart, as Mario Lemina worked the ball to Manolo Gabbiadini 20 yards out, but his low shot was straight at Lössl in goal.

Mounié then headed over for the hosts at the other end, but opportunities were proving a little harder to come by in the second half for both sides.

In a bid to change that, Pellegrino made his first change on 64 minutes, as Lemina was withdrawn and Shane Long was thrown on in his place.

Shortly after, the Saints boss made another switch, as James Ward-Prowse entered the fray in place of Gabbiadini, while his final change saw Sam McQueen replace Tadić.

Ward-Prowse had an appeal for a penalty turned down in the 81st minute, as he cut back past Zanka inside the area, but his claims of a trip were denied by referee Stuart Attwell.

Long then created an opening for Redmond, finding him in space on the edge of the area but Lössl was equal to his curling shot, pushing it away to safety, as Saints began to apply some late pressure.

Bertrand nearly then won it in the last minute, as he stole in at the back post to meet Long’s looping cross, but his header back across goal was cleared off the line by the covering Tommy Smith.

Huddersfield v Southampton live score and goal updates - latest here

Show/hide article

Huddersfield moved top of the Premier League after a goalless draw at home to Southampton.

David Wagner’s men remain unbeaten from their opening three games and, with Manchester United not playing until later, sit top of the pile.

Town, buoyed by a vocal home support, harassed and pressed their opponents at every opportunity but it was the visitors who had the game’s best chances.

Saints winger Nathan Redmond twice found himself in good positions to break the deadlock but was wasteful on both. His first, on 11 minutes, was the best of the pair, clean through on goal and with the keeper to beat after a fine pass from Steven Davies he placed his effort wide of the post.

The Terriers’ best chances came in a first half which they dominated from the off.

Elias Kachunga was denied from close range courtesy of a superb diving block from Maya Yoshida on 19 minutes and Fraser Forster was forced to tip a Tom Ince effort round the post on 36 minutes. They should have been ahead at the break when Forster spilled Chris Lowe’s left-wing cross with Kachunga lurking and the goal gaping but the keeper made amends with a good save.

The visitors were second best for long periods but finished with a flurry and after Redmond saw a curling effort well saved by keeper Jonas Lossl, Ryan Bertrand was denied by a superb goal-line clearance from Mathias Jorgensen.

Premier League RESULTS: Newcastle vs West Ham and more

Newcastle bagged their first Premier League points of the season in style with a 3-0 win over West Ham.

Elsewhere, Huddersfield and Southampton are still unbeaten after their goalless draw, while there was also stalemate at Watford - the Hornets could not be breached by Brighton despite playing for more than an hour with 10 men.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, lost again as goals from Tammy Abraham and Jordan Ayew secured Swansea a 2-0 victory at Selhurst Park.

Premier League results: Newcastle and Swansea win comfortably to heap pressure on Slaven Bilic and De Boer

Show/hide article

Four games followed Manchester City’s dramatic 2-1 win over Bournemouth and talkSPORT.com followed the action

Tammy Abraham, on loan from Chelsea, opened his account for the Swans to give the away side breathing space at the break. The 19-year-old volleyed home a superbly lofted ball into the box from Leroy Fer.

Frank de Boer, the Crystal Palace manager, was clearly furious by what he’d seen in the first half and sent his players back onto the field five minutes early. But despite a bright start, Swansea took a 2-0 lead when Danny Kelly was robbed of the ball on the halfway line, allowing Kyle Naughton to send Andre Ayew through to beat a weak challenge from Wayne Hennessey.

A comeback never looked on for the Eagles, and a third defeat on the trot will have Palace supporters anxious over De Boer’s failure to make an impression early on in the season.

Southampton had the better of their opponents early on, going close through Nathan Redmond, but Huddersfield slowly but surely grew into the game. The Terriers’ high-pressing style of play was problematic for the Saints, and certainly had goalkeeper Fraser Forster rattled. Only last-ditch blocks stood in the way of David Wagner’s team taking the lead.

Huddersfield hoped the long-ball to striker Steve Mounie would cause defensive problems for Southampton in the second period, but the Saints’ experience showed and they regained control without offering too much threat of their own.

With six points on the board, the Terriers won’t be disheartened by the draw, but Mauricio Pellegrino will be disappointed by his players not kicking on from the previous win over West Ham.

Joselu scored the first goal of Newcastle’s season to give the home side a deserved lead against a West Ham team that simply haven’t got going this term, despite the acquisitions that have been made over the summer.

Javier Hernandez was almost anonymous for the Hammers and just as Slaven Bilic had looked to his substitutes’ bench to inspire the comeback, Ciaran Clark nodded in the cross from Matt Ritchie to double their lead.

Substitute Aleksandar Mitrović later got his name on the scoresheet to add a third and force Joe Hart to pick the ball out of his own net for the 10th time in three games, leaving Bilic under pressure and with unavoidable questions over another lacklustre performance from his team to answer.

Miguel Britos’ reckless challenge and subsequent deserved red card was the main talking point of the first half, summing up a lack of inspiration at Vicarage Road.

Despite the man advantage, Brighton failed to capitalise and will be rueing a missed chance to get three vital points on the board.

Yeovil Town vs. Coventry City - Football Match Report - August 26, 2017 - ESPN

Show/hide article

Coventry lost their second successive League Two match as goals in either half from Rhys Browne and Olufela Olomola sealed a 2-0 victory for Yeovil.

The visitors started strongly and within 30 seconds of kick-off, Jodi Jones had forced a sharp save from Artur Krysiak after he breezed past Bevis Mugabi all too easily.

Despite being on the back foot it was actually Yeovil who took the lead against the run of play after 27 minutes. A hopeful ball over the top from Otis Khan caused a mix-up between Chris Stokes and goalkeeper Liam O’Brien who collided, leaving Browne to knock it into an empty net.

Coventry pushed for the equaliser in the second half and went close as a Tony Andreu free-kick hit the post and a Marc McNulty header was kept out by Krysiak.

But Olomola settled any nerves for the home side in the 75th minute as he burst past Liam Kelly into the box and fired it low past O’Brien.

Huddersfield 0-0 Southampton: David Wagner’s side held by Saints

Show/hide article

Huddersfield extended their unbeaten start to life in the Premier League with a 0-0 draw against Southampton at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday.

The hosts enjoyed the better of the first half as Steve Mounie drew a smart stop from Fraser Forster, while Nathan Redmond squandered an excellent early chance for the Saints.

Southampton improved after the break and pushed for a winner in the final 10 minutes as substitute James Ward-Prowse had a penalty appeal turned down, while Jonas Lossl kept out Redmond’s side-foot effort and Ryan Bertrand saw a header cleared off the line.

The result means Huddersfield have two wins and a draw from three Premier League games and they have kept three consecutive league clean sheets.

Huddersfield largely controlled the first 45 minutes but the best opening fell to Redmond, who fired wide when one-on-one with Lossl.

Forster then denied Mounie with a point-blank save as the hosts upped the tempo and the Southampton goalkeeper almost gifted the Terriers the lead shortly before the break. He fumbled a deep cross straight into the path of Elias Kachunga but recovered to keep the score level.

The visitors stepped up a gear in the second half and Manolo Gabbiadini - otherwise isolated for much of the match - forced Lossl into a low save with a shot from the edge of the area.

Mauricio Pellegrino introduced Shane Long and the Irishman made a difference, creating three opportunities in quick succession in the final stages.

Ward-Prowse wanted a penalty after racing onto Long’s pass and tumbling under the challenge of Mathias Jorgensen before Long teed up Redmond to test Lossl with a curling strike.

There was still time for Southampton to fashion one more opening, with Long again involved. He chipped up a cross for an onrushing Bertrand but the full-back miscued his header, allowing Tommy Smith to hack clear.

The Huddersfield captain was a rock at right-back and helped keep Southampton’s attacking trio quiet for much of the match.

Redmond and Dusan Tadic had little joy, while Smith looked more adventurous in attack than opposite number Bertrand.

He bailed out his side late on too, clearing Bertrand’s header off the line in stoppage time to preserve a clean sheet and a share of the spoils.

David Wagner: "At the end maybe the fair result is a draw. I think it was one of the better 0-0 draws we have seen, especially from my side.

"In the first half after Southampton missed their first clear chance, we played very good, we created good opportunities, we were very aggressive on crosses and we kept them away from our goal.

We really were in their face so I was really happy with the first half. In the second half we had some moments as well, but Southampton showed why they are one of the best teams in this division."

Mauricio Pellegrino: "It could have been three points, one point or nil because it was really tough in the beginning.

"Huddersfield are really well prepared especially in their style of play, with the long ball and second ball. On crosses we were in trouble at some moments.

“At the same time we had two chances in the first half and in the end, the last 15 or 20 minutes, we put them under pressure with our chances.”

Phil Thompson: "I’ve been a big critic of Maya Yoshida in the past but what a terrific game he had.

“He is getting better and better alongside Jack Stephens. The two of them were under heavy pressure at times as Huddersfield crossed so many balls into the box. But the two of them were absolutely fantastic today for Southampton.”

The international break means Huddersfield will have to wait until September 11 for a chance to keep their dream Premier League start going.

That’s a Monday Night Football clash at the London Stadium against struggling West Ham, while Pellegrino’s Southampton host Watford on September 9.

Redmond: We should have done better

Show/hide article

Saints kept their unbeaten start to the Premier League season going by fighting out a goalless draw with the Terriers, but Redmond felt they were far from their best.

“We could have done better, a lot better,” he said. "That’s not our usual standard and I think we know that and we’ll be frustrated in the dressing room.

"If we’re being critical, we should really have finished our chances. But they had a few as well, so we’ll take the draw and we’ll go into the international break and clear our heads.

"The excitement of coming up from the Championship to the Premier League, they’ve done fantastically well at the start of the season, but we know that on our day we can play against the best of them, and today we weren’t quite up to that. We’ve got two weeks to reflect on that over the international break.

“We’ll work on getting better over the next two weeks and looking forward to the next Premier League game.”

Fighting spirit pleases Pellegrino

Show/hide article

Saints earned a 0-0 draw away to the Premier League new boys, and had some opportunities in the early and late stages to have claimed all three points.

On the whole, Pellegrino was satisfied with the display and the continuation of the team’s unbeaten top-flight start, but explained they need to find more in the future.

“It was a really tough game from the beginning and I think we were fighting, we were there,” he said.

"We had some problems on second balls and in some deliveries, but I think little by little we were getting better, especially when we controlled the ball.

"At the beginning we had a couple of situations and, at the end, we were much better – we had three or four opportunities to score and to win the game – but typical British football, it was really tough.

“Huddersfield are now with a really high mentality. We were fighting until the end. The character of the team was good and we’ve got another point, another clean sheet, but we have to keep going. To win games, you have to do something more – a little bit more.”

Huddersfield 0-0 Southampton: Saints stay unbeaten in top flight

Show/hide article

Saints go into the first international break of the season unbeaten in the Premier League after a battling out goalless draw against Huddersfield.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side spurned a great early chance and then to soak up a lot of first half pressure against the newly promoted Terriers, who came into the game on a high after victories in their first two top flight matches.

But tactical changes from Pellegrino helped his side turn things in their favour and produce a solid away result – which would have been even better were it not for a stoppage time goalline clearance from Tommy Smith - to bounce back from the midweek Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Wolves.

Saints don’t have another game for a fortnight but will return to action with two draws and a win under their belt in the Premier League.

Saints were having to handle a lot of intensity in the opening stages of the game.

Huddersfield were bang up for the match as you would expect and were pressing hard in every area of the pitch which only further encouraged an already raucous crowd.

It gave Saints so little time on the ball and they were having to hold firm in an attempt to dampen early enthusiasm and work their way into the game.

They did just that as they created a golden opportunity with virtually their first attack of the game on 11 minutes as Steven Davis slid the ball into Nathan Redmond.

Replays suggested he was marginally offside but the flag stayed down and Redmond had the chance to open up his body and guide a right footed shot into the far corner under little pressure. However, his effort was directed wide of the far post.

Fraser Forster had his first action four minutes later, making a simple save from a Mathias Zanka header from just inside the area that never had enough power to trouble the Saints stopper.

They were grateful to Maya Yoshida for making a tremendous last gasp saving challenge in the six yard box on 20 minutes to prevent Elias Kachunga from turning home from close range.

Moments later Forster did superbly to save with his body from close range as Steve Mounie tried to turn home a first time shot from a left wing cross.

Saints were under the pump and after Kachunga had left Mario Lemina standing, Steven Davis made a vital late interception to cut out Rajiv van La Parra’s shot that looked to be heading for the bottom corner.

Mounie didn’t make clean contact to a Tommy Smith low cut back cross from the right on 31 minutes and Saints were happy to see the ball trickle just wide of the post.

The Huddersfield striker did hit the target with a header form a corner but it was simple for Forster to deal with.

He was extended far more on 36 minutes as Saints allowed the ball to bounce to Tom Ince, who hit a shot across goal only for Forster to dive to his right to turn wide.

Forster was just about able to recover from what looked as though it might be a terrible moment as he made a mess of dealing with a cross on the move and presented the ball to Kachunga, but he was able to save the shot with his legs.

When the half time whistle went Saints were no doubt pleased to have got into the break level despite Redmond having had such a great opportunity early in the game.

Pellegrino made a tactical change for the second half with Oriol Romeu playing alone in the anchor role in front of the back four and Davis dropping deeper to play alongside Lemina in front of him.

Lemina’s positioning made an impact six minutes after the restart as he held the ball up and laid it off to Manolo Gabbiadini, whose shot from 20 yards was drilled low but straight at Jonas Lossl in the Huddersfield goal.

Pellegrino’s change was having an effect as Saints were getting far more control, and as a result possession, in the middle of the pitch, also restricting Aaron Mooy’s influence, allowing them to press Huddersfield back a little.

The Terriers reacted quickly to the situation by making a substitution on 56 minutes with Kasey Palmer replacing van La Parra.

Mounie headed a difficult chance well over the bar as Huddersfield tried to reassert their dominance in the game.

There was another change for Huddersfield as Danny Williams came on for Philip Billing.

Redmond tried an effort from distance that whistled just wide before Pellegrino introduced Shane Long for Lemina on 64 minutes and reverted to much more of a 4-2-3-1 but with Gabbiadini playing deeper and trying to support Long.

It didn’t last long though as James Ward-Prowse replaced Gabbiadini on 71 minutes.

That was followed three minutes later by Sam McQueen coming on for Tadic. He went out to the left with Redmond playing more centrally.

Forster had to make a save from Ince, who hit a powerful shot from range.

The various changes for both sides had interrupted the rhythm of the game which hadn’t flowed like it did in the first period, but the three points were there for the taking for either side.

Saints furiously appealed for a penalty on 82 minutes as Ward-Prowse cut back inside in the area and went down over the trailing leg of Zanka but referee Stuart Attwell was having none of it.

Redmond had a sight of goal three minutes later but his side footed shot from just inside the area was guided too close to Lossl was able to push away.

Huddersfield made a final switch with two minutes remaining with Collin Quaner coming on for Kachunga.

Saints so nearly broke the deadlock in stoppage time as Ryan Bertrand arrived unmarked at the far post to head Long’s right wing cross back across goal. Lossl was beaten but Smith appeared on the line to hack it away.

That proved to be the final chance of the match with both sides probably relatively content with a point.
