Hunter: Checkatrade experience so valuable

Show/hide article…

Saints fielded an under-21 team against the League One leaders, as one of 16 clubs invited by the EFL to enter a young side.

Although they were beaten 2-0, Hunter’s men performed impressively against their high-flying, senior opponents, and the experience was something that Southampton’s Technical Director feels was invaluable.

"Unless they get exposed to this they’re never going to find out, and it shows who can stand up to and be counted and who needs a lot more work – that’s the real purpose of this sort of tournament,” said Hunter.

"It gives us a snapshot of what they’re like playing against tough opposition and obviously men, and then we can develop their programmes individually depending on the needs of each player.

"I said to them before the game that the most tired part of your body in games like this should be your brain, because you’ve got to think, and out-think the opposition, particularly as some of their players are obviously seasoned professionals and they’ve got quite a lot of league games under their belt.

"It’s a thinking process and they’ve equipped themselves very well.”

Hunter now wants the players to take what they have learned into their next Premier League 2 games, before returning to Checkatrade Trophy action in October, when they visit Cambridge United in their next group match.

"What we need to do is build on this to play games in the Under-23 league – that’s before we get to playing the other two Checkatrade games – so the level’s been set and they need to produce that against their own age groups.

“That’s first of all, and we’ll look at the other two [Checkatrade Trophy] ties as and when they come"

Roy Keane tells striker to 'look at the man in the ’ over club struggles

Show/hide article…

Roy Keane has challenged Shane Long to ‘look at the man in the mirror’ and ask why his club career has stalled.

But at the same time, he will back the striker to put his Southampton frustrations behind him when called upon in Georgia this Saturday.

Long, 30, has made three appearances this season - two in the league and one in the League Cup - but all of them were off the bench and he has yet to score.

Last season, he started 10 Premier League games and came off the bench another 22 times scoring three goals along the way.

For club and country combined, Long made 27 starts last season and was a used sub the same number of times scoring seven goals in the process.

But since leaving Reading in 2011, Long has found his career to be stop-start at West Brom, a brief stint at Hull and now Southampton, where Manolo Gabbiadini is the main man.

Asked if Long could do more to establish himself, Keane said: “I would have thought so, yeah, but I don’t work with him every day.

“Shane played under a lot of managers at West Brom and had a short stint at Hull.

“As much as we look at managers, I always say the player’s got to look at himself. Look at the man in the mirror.

“Is he doing enough at club level in terms of training? I don’t know. But when we have him for the week, he’s fine, he gets on with it.

“But sometimes players do turn up and they do look as if they are short of minutes under their belts.

“And maybe that can happen with Shane sometimes but if he starts for us on Saturday, I’m sure he’ll do well for us.”

Keane continued: “In an ideal world we’d want all our lads playing regularly and strikers scoring goals.

“It doesn’t seem to be happening for Shane at Southampton at the moment but would that mean he’d be reluctant about starting on Saturday? Obviously not.

“Sometimes we just put whatever is going on in their club careers on the backburner and just get on with it. We know if Shane starts on Saturday, he’ll do a good job like he always has.

"But ask any striker, it’s all about getting minutes on the pitch and putting the ball in the back of the net and he’s not been doing that regularly enough.”

Arsenal suffer Virgil van Dijk blow: Southampton move for Theo Walcott a non-starter

Show/hide article…

It was reported yesterday that Southampton were willing to cut a deal with the Gunners if Theo Walcott was included in a deal.

But, according to football journalist Emanuele Giulianelli, the Saints’ move for Walcott is a “non-starter”.

Giulianelli, who made the original claim, tweeted: “Walcott to Southampton seems to be a non-starter.

“He was willing to join on £180k per week but Saints would only offer around £130k.”

Walcott started his career at Southampton before joining Arsenal at the age of 16 in 2006.

Yoshida reflects on a special five years

Show/hide article…

It was 30th August 2012 when the Japan international completed a move to St Mary’s from Dutch side VVV-Venlo, shortly after Saints had returned to the Premier League.

Yoshida’s debut was a chastening 6-1 defeat at Arsenal, but, if it was a difficult start to life in the club, there were far better moments to come for the centre-back.

Yoshida, now 29, has been a mainstay of a squad that has achieved four successive finishes in the top half of the Premier League, while also reaching a League Cup final and experiencing two European campaigns.

He has gone on to become one of the most senior, respected members of the group, wearing the captain’s armband on occasions, and signing a new three-year deal only last week.

Reflecting on the five-year anniversary of his arrival, Yoshida said: "Five years is a long time. I think I have become much better as a player, as a man, as a husband, as a dad.

“That five years has made me really stronger as a person, not only as a footballer. I think these five years have been the biggest time of my career, but still I want to progress more and more with Southampton.”

Adapting to England and the Premier League wasn’t simple for Yoshida, who admits he went through some tough times as he established himself, but he feels very much at home now.

“It wasn’t easy,” he explained. "We struggled in the first season – we were just promoted from the second division.

"I had everything through those five years, for better and for worse. Sometimes I played a lot, some seasons I didn’t, but everything makes me stronger.

“It’s not easy first time of course to adjust to English football and the English culture, but now I understand and my wife is really happy as well.”

Yoshida last season became the first Japanese player to reach 100 Premier League appearances, and it is a source of great pride for him – although it is difficult to select just one highlight from his time with Southampton so far.

“It’s hard to pick one, because every day is a special moment for me in Southampton, in England, in the Premier League,” he said.

"I fight for it every day, because if I lose my focus just one day it’s going to be trouble for me, because there is most tough competition here, and I have to fight for that every day.

“Last season, I achieved 100 Premier League appearances, we went to a Wembley cup final, I became a dad, so last season I had many things and I think those are my best moments in Southampton.”

Wood: We’ve learned a lot

Show/hide article…

Saints’ young team was beaten 2-0 by the League One leaders at ABAX Stadium on Tuesday night in their opening game of the competition, but they came away from the match with plenty of reasons to be proud, as they stood up to a tough, physical test from their senior opponents.

Left-back Wood said: "It was a good test for us. I think we started poorly in the first half and gave away two sloppy goals, but in the second half we came out flying and I think we were the better team at the start of the second half.

"But that’s men’s football – the real world, if you like – and we don’t get that physicality in our league, so I’m really pleased with how we stepped up and dealt with the physical battle.

“We could have just sat back and been immature about it, but I’m really proud of the boys. We all stepped up, we all faced what they could give us.”

Wood believes the experience of facing Peterborough is something the playerrs can use when the Under-23 team returns to Premier League 2 action.

“They’re streetwise, they’ve done it all before,” he said of Tuesday’s opponents. "A few of them are experienced lads – they’ve had over 100 appearances nearly all of them, and between us we’ve got pretty much none, so I’m just proud of the boys and looking forward to the next games that come up.

“We can take the experience from this and put it into the games we’re going to face in the Premier League 2. You’re not going to learn much more than against a team like that.”

Alan Shearer gets plate inserted in broken wrist after bike accident

Show/hide article…

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has had surgery to have a plate inserted into his broken wrist.

The 47-year-old fell off his bike during a cycling holiday in Portugal earlier this month but is now back in England, where he has been treated.

Match of the Day pundit Shearer took to Instagram on Wednesday morning to share X-ray pictures with his 184,000 followers.

He accompanied the scan images with the caption: ‘Nice new wrist!!!’

The Premier League’s all-time record goalscorer also posted a photo of himself in a hospital bed with a large piece of blue foam protecting his right arm.

He wrote: ‘Op done. Plate in wrist. No golf tomorrow!’

Shearer had used Instagram to break the news of his injury too.

On August 21 he shared a gruesome photo of his cut hand and the message: 'Ouch! Bit of a fall off the bike this morning.

‘Waiting for results of X-rays on wrist. Good job I was wearing my helmet #bikesafe’.

Despite his injury, BBC Sport pundit Shearer appeared on Saturday night’s Match of the Day show, wearing a black plaster on his wrist.

Transfer window: The deals that could still happen

Show/hide article…

With less than 48 hours to go of the transfer window, millions remain to be splashed by the big-spenders from the Premier League and abroad to seal the talent they need for this season.

Alexis Sanchez, Virgil van Dijk, Philippe Coutinho and many more are still very much sought-after and keen on moves — but can the buying clubs get the deals over the line?

Here, Sportsmail looks at the biggest transfers still to come this window and how likely they are to go through.

It’s been an ongoing saga since before the window opened, but Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are finally getting close to agreeing a deal for Costa. A fee of £40million and £10m in add-ons should do it. The Spain striker has made it clear his former club is the only destination he will accept.

How likely is it to happen? 7.5/10

Liverpool will resume their pursuit of Van Dijk before the deadline, having had their fingers burnt earlier this summer. Chelsea and Manchester City have also shown interest but despite the centre back being frozen out at Southampton two big obstacles still stand - a huge price tag and more importantly, the Saints have been adamant up to this point they will not sell. It remains to be seen if that changes.

How likely is it to happen? 4/10

Another frozen-out player with his club resolute in their refusal to sell up. Liverpool have rejected three bids, reaching up to £114m, but the ambition of both Coutinho and Barcelona to secure a switch to the Nou Camp has not diminished. Negotiations will continue but it would take a serious Liverpool U-turn for this deal to go through.

How likely is it to happen? 4.5/10

Chelsea and Tottenham have been the principle suitors for Barkley, with the former seeing a £25m bid rejected this week. A torn hamstring put Spurs off and now Ronald Koeman has opened the door for the Englishman to stick around for the last year of his contract. But Everton would have no problem with accepting an improved offer from any buyers.

How likely is it to happen? 6/10

Oxlade-Chamberlain has rejected a move to Chelsea after Sportsmail revealed the versatile midfielder was stalling on the champions’ £35m deal earlier this week. Liverpool’s interest is real, though, and Oxlade-Chamberlain would consider an approach from Anfield — whether Arsenal would be so welcoming is another question. He could still stay in north London.

How likely is it to happen? 7/10

After interest from Arsenal and Tottenham earlier in the window, Liverpool are now the frontrunners for Lemar with a £74m deal mapped out. This chances of pulling off a deal are not helped by Didier Deschamps’ refusal to allow players to leave his France squad to complete transfers and Liverpool face a race against time to get this one over the line. Divock Origi could move in the opposite direction.

How likely is it to happen? 4/10

Paris Saint-Germain might have to take Mbappe on loan initially to do so, but they have no intention of stopping their mind-blowing summer spending. The eventual cost of this deal will be £166m and the French forward’s international team-mates are all under the impression his move is as good as done. Only a late hiccup will stop Mbappe linking up with Neymar in Paris.

How likely is it to happen? 9/10

Manchester City have left it late, but they are now making the most serious advances of the window to get Sanchez out of Arsenal. The Gunners are ready to cash in but would want more than £70m or a structured deal with a player in exchange. Otherwise, their preference is to keep the Chilean despite dressing-room fears that his wantaway status is destabilising. Expect this one to drag on right to the deadline.

How likely is it to happen? 6.5/10

Buyers Tottenham want it to happen, sellers PSG want it to happen, Aurier wants it to happen: £23m, five-year contract. Now it just comes down to the Home Office and whether his visa application is accepted. The full back’s conviction for assaulting a police officer in May 2016 is again causing issues. Sources in France expect a decision on Wednesday.

How likely is it to happen? 5/10

Jose Mourinho has been pursuing Perisic all summer but Manchester United appear to be admitting defeat in their chase of the Inter Milan star. He now appears set to sign a new contract at the San Siro and although United want another wide forward their options are narrowing. Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s return has given them additional numbers in the squad, too.

How likely is it to happen? 2/10

A potential makeweight in Sanchez’s situation, Sterling is open to a move to Arsenal. The Pep Guardiola is not so open to losing a player who has already rescued three late points for him this season, though. Unless other options emerge, Sterling’s future depends on how desperate Manchester City are for Sanchez.

How likely is it to happen? 4.5/10

Chelsea have held talks over the Swansea City striker and while Paul Clement has made it clear he does not want to lose Llorente, a £15m offer and Wilfried Bony coming in as a replacement could facilitate a move. Everton also showed interest but a switch to Stamford Bridge looks to be on before the window shuts.

How likely is it to happen? 8/10

Arsenal are willing to sell Mustafi just 12 months after splashing £35m on him, but want to recoup a significant chunk of that fee. So, Inter Milan’s initial offering of £4.6m for a season-long loan isn’t likely to appeal. Juventus are also keen which could drive a price rise but the Gunners would also need a replacement, too. A long way still to go on this one.

How likely is it to happen? 6/10

Chelsea want to pay a maximum of around £35m, Leicester City want closer to £40m. A deal for Drinkwater now comes down to compromise. The midfielder is interested in linking up with Antonio Conte and a return to the Champions League but Chelsea have some work to do to agree a fee.

How likely is it to happen? 7/10

Liverpool have little need for Sakho’s talents but value the French centre back at around £30m. Crystal Palace, who had him on loan for the second half of last season, are nearing that valuation but face competition from Leicester and West Bromwich Albion. Liverpool’s search for other stars looks like a sale for Sakho will ultimately come about, with Selhurst Park his most likely destination.

How likely is it to happen? 8/10
