Hunter proud of players

Show/hide article…

Saints, one of 16 clubs invited to field an under-21 side in the competition, were beaten 2-0 by the League One leaders at the ABAX Stadium, but held their own against their high-flying opponents.

"I’m very proud of them,” said Hunter. "There’s four or five lads there tonight who have acquitted themselves really well and shown good signs for the future.

"The other pleasing thing was not to concede in the seocnd half and the chances that were created by the opposition were from our poor play and not some sort of fantastic way of opening us up.

"I think Alex [McCarthy] has only had one save from a corner in the second half, so that was very pleasing.”

Hunter added: "It was the difficult game that we thought it would be.

"I thought for the first 20 minutes we were poor, we didn’t adapt to the pace and power of this team, bearing in mind they’re top of League One.

“I thought after that we settled in the game and grew to half-time and I thought the start to the second half was particularly good.”

Ex-Saints and Eastleigh defender takes on Whitehawk job

Show/hide article…

EX-SAINTS and Eastleigh defender Dan Harding has stepped into the managerial hot seat at Whitehawk.

The 33-year-old left-back is in caretaker charge of the Vanarama National League South club following Jimmy Dack’s resignation.

Dack, who took over in the summer, stepped aside in the wake of Monday’s 4-0 defeat at Havant & Waterlooville.

Harding will take control of first-team affairs while they look for a replacement.

Harding, who had been helping Dack on the coaching side as well as playing, first joined Whitehawk in September 2016, linking up again with his old Eastleigh boss Richard Hill.

A Whitehawk statement said: “The club would like to thank Jimmy for his efforts and wish him the best of luck in the future.

“Dan Harding steps up as Whitehawk’s new caretaker manager following the resignation of Jimmy Dack last night.

"Dan began his career at Brighton & Hove Albion and also played for Leeds United, Ipswich Town, Southend United, Reading, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Millwall before joining the Hawks in September 2016. Harding is also a former England U21 player.”

Whitehawk are propping up the VNL South with just one point. Their next match is at home to Tom Killick’s Poole Town on Saturday.

Roy Keane challenges Shane Long to ‘look in the mirror’

Show/hide article…

Roy Keane has challenged Shane Long to ‘look in the mirror’ to ensure he racks up more minutes on the pitch and more goals at club level.

The 17-goal Republic of Ireland striker is set to lead the line in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Georgia after playing less than an hour of competitive football this season.

‘It doesn’t seem to be happening for Shane at Southampton at the moment but would that mean he’d be reluctant about starting on Saturday? Obviously not,’ said Keane on Tuesday.

‘I’m sure if he [Long] was sitting here he’d say he’d like to have got a lot more games under his belt and certainly more goals,’ added the Ireland assistant manager.

‘I don’t know his stats at Southampton but you ask any striker and it’s all about getting minutes on the pitch and putting the ball in the back of the net, and he’s not been doing that regularly enough.’

‘I’d love to know how many games he started and finished over the last five or six years,’ added Keane, who believes Long is in control of his own destiny.

‘As much as we look at managers, I always say the player’s got to look at himself. Look at the man in the mirror,’ said Keane.

'Is he [Long] doing enough at club level in terms of training? I don’t know. But when we have him for the week, he’s fine.

'Sometimes players turn up and do look as if they are short of minutes under the belts. And maybe that can happen with Shane sometimes.

‘But we kind of forget about that a little bit on Saturday and if he starts I’m sure he’ll do well for us.’

Keane believes Jon Walters is on course to win his 50th Ireland cap in Tbilisi. The 34-year-old striker has been working with the Irish physio Tony McCarthy on his rehab as he steps up his recovery from an ankle problem.

‘Once Jon is on that plane, I’d be pretty confident that he’ll be available for selection unless there’s any sort of major setback tomorrow,’ said Keane who is demanding Ireland’s shot-shy midfielders find their shooting boots on Saturday.

Apart from James McClean (nine goals), and Robbie Brady (six), the midfield goals return is poor.

Aiden McGeady has just three in 90 appearances, Wes Hoolahan three in 40, Glenn Whelan two in 81, while David Meyler (19 caps) and Harry Arter (six) have yet to score.

‘If you are a midfield player, be that Meyler, McGeady or McClean, you should have goals in the locker, five or six or seven every season, whether that’s in the Premiership or international level,’ said Keane.

‘I probably didn’t score enough myself at international level but if you are a midfield player contributing goals, it has a huge effect on the team,’ he added.

Scott Hogan should be available for final round of qualifiers next month while another Championship striker, Will Keane of Hull City, has indicated his eagerness to declare.

Having options in attack is a plus but Keane laments the shortage of top-flight players available to the management team.

‘I still think too many of our players are playing in the Championship. I’d like to be going to Premier League games a bit more.’

Keane said speculation earlier this month linking him with the Israeli national team post had ‘no truth in it from my angle.’

The Corkman signed a deal with the FAI last September to remain on in his current role until after the 2018 World Cup.

Peterborough 2-0 Southampton U21s: Saints youngsters lose Checkatrade Trophy opener

Show/hide article…

Saints U21s were well beaten in the first game of their Checkatrade Trophy campaign at League One leaders Peterborough United tonight.

After conceding two early goals – the third-minute opener from a corner and the second from the penalty spot – they left London Road with nothing to show from their opening game in group C of the Checkatrade Trophy’s southern section.

This was always going to be a tough examination for the latest batch of Saints youngsters.

Peterborough are flying high atop League One after winning their first four matches and made only a few changes from the team that won 4-1 away to Northampton Town, one of the other teams in their Checkatrade group, on Saturday.

It did not help that Saints conceded two goals in the first 21 minutes at London Road.

The ‘ABAX Stadium’ holds some happy memories from Saints journey through the Football League.

Saints won 3-1 on their last visit in April 2012, on their way to winning promotion from the Championship.

An early goal from Jos Hooiveld and two by Billy Sharp secured that victory.

The previous season, Saints drew 4-4 here en route to going up from League One. They led 2-0 and 4-2, with Rickie Lambert scoring twice, but had to settle for a point after conceding a penalty at the end of a helter-skelter afternoon.

But a decade after losing their last cup clash against Peterborough (Gregorz Rasiak netted at both ends in a 2-1 League Cup exit at London Road in August 2007), Saints U21s lost another.

They never really troubled Posh and Junior Morias did not help their confidence when he netted the first from close range after Will Wood conceded an early corner.

Jonathan Afolabi, Saints’ attacking spearhead, was denied by Posh keeper Connor O’Malley within a minute of the opening goal.

From the resulting corner, a near-post effort from Alfie Jones, with the outside of the captain’s right boot, was comfortably saved.

Having scored his third goal of the season, the lively Morias sent a couple of other efforts whistling past the left-hand upright.

Gwion Edwards was also twice off target as Posh pressed for a second.

Morias won a corner with a rasping cross-shot before Marcus Maddison doubled the home side’s advantage from the penalty spot, sending Alex McCarthy the wrong way in the 21st minute, after Ollie Cook was penalised for a foul on Idris Kanu.

Edwards continued to threaten down the right but Saints struggled to make any headway.

Callum Slattery had a rare Saints shot on target, a free-kick straight at Posh custodian O’Malley, and at the other end McCarthy dealt comfortably with Maddison’s inswinging dead ball from the left.

The rain teemed down throughout the first half at the end of which Posh produced the best move of the opening 45 minutes, zipping the ball across the turf with the confident air of a team in form.

It ended with Maddison skidding a low shot into the palms of McCarthy.

Tyreke Johnson’s inswinging left-footer into Johnson was quickly snuffed out by a Posh defence well marshalled by former Saints U18 captain Tafazolli. who spent four years at Mansfield before moving on last year.

Slattery had a cross blocked and the resulting corner was headed away by Tafazolli.

Even when Johnson got the better of the ex-Saint, the danger was thwarted.

Captain Jones had Saints best effort of the match at the beginning of the second half, when his half- volley from the edge of the area was palmed over by O’Malley.

The corner did not clear the first man but Cook was soon defending well for the visitors.

The pass of the match then set up Morias, who slipped on the turf in the goalmouth but managed to retain the ball, while surrounded by a phalanx of red-and-white shirts, before firing away a shot that McCarthy did well to save with his feet.

Tafazolli’s header was well saved by McCarthy, before Morias was applauded off ahead of Peterborough’s trip to Doncaster on Saturday.

He was replaced by Jack Marriott, who has scored six goals in Peterborough’s last three games, including a hat-trick.

Peterborough had already done enough, but continued to threaten after the introduction of their top scorer.

Marriott was in the thick of the action as McCarthy palmed aside another goal-bound effort, before missing a sitter when Jones gifted him possession.

He burst through after intercepting a pass, only to slide his left-footed shot the wrong side of the post.

After winning a corner, Marriott volleyed over from close range and Maddison’s deflected volley was also comfortable for McCarthy.

Excellent defending from Richard Bakary at least prevented a third Peterborough goal in injury time.

Next up for Saints in this competition is a trip to Cambridge United on October 3.

Virgil Van Dijk to Liverpool: I’m hearing there’s no way Saints will sell - Jamie Redknapp

Show/hide article…

At least that what’s footballer-turned-pundit Jamie Redknapp has suggested as rumours of a potential switch continue to swirl. Van Dijk has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most in-demand players since joining Saints from Celtic two years ago. And a move to Anfield appeared a formality before Liverpool were accused of tapping the Holland international up in June. That situation forced the Reds to take a step back from proceedings - although Jurgen Klopp remains keen to get him on-board this summer.

“But they are digging their heels in. I’m hearing that there’s no way they’re gonna sell him.” Jamie Redknapp reckons Southampton are desperate to keep hold of Liverpool target Virgil Van Dijk Former Liverpool star Redknapp had his say on the Van Dijk saga on Tuesday night’s edition of The Debate on Sky Sports. And he revealed the murmurs are Southampton are determined to keep hold of the 26-year-old ahead of deadline day. Redknapp said: "I remember doing The Debate show three weeks ago, four weeks ago now, and we were talking about [how] I thought it was a certainty that Liverpool would get Van Dijk. But they are digging their heels in. I’m hearing that there’s no way they’re gonna sell him.

"It’s a nightmare for the player. It’s a little bit like the Coutinho one because now we’re talking about two players that are getting an opportunity. [Philippe] Coutinho wants to go to Barcelona. It’s hard to begrudge anyone doing that. When you [Ian Wright] was at Crystal Palace, you had the chance to go to Arsenal, you know. And it’s the same with Van Dijk wanting to go to Liverpool, or wherever it is, Chelsea. Everyone wants to better themselves, in whatever walk of life you’re from. “It’s a really interesting one now and I’m looking forward to seeing how these all figure out. The fact that Liverpool are bidding for [Thomas] Lemar and believe they’ve got a good chance of getting him tells me that maybe [the] Coutinho one could still be alive and they are selling him but they want to get in a player before they end up selling him to Barcelona.” Whether Liverpool will manage to persuade Southampton to let Van Dijk leave before tomorrow’s 11pm deadline remains to be seen. It’s likely to take a world-record defender fee of more than £70m to secure his services if St. Mary’s chiefs do alter their stance.

Claise could make Saints exit

Show/hide article…

Jordy Clasie will be allowed to leave Saints before the close of the transfer window if a suitable bid comes in.

The Dutch midfielder does not currently figure in Mauricio Pellegrino’s plans and so Saints are thought to be prepared to sell him if a suitable offer arrives before midnight tomorrow.

Clasie joined Saints for £8m in July 2015, linking up again with Ronald Koeman, who managed him at Feyenoord.

His first season saw him make a limited impact with Koeman explaining that he regularly substituted Clasie as the midfielder was building up his physical level to that required in the Premier League.

Koeman predicted bright things for Clasie in the 26-year-old’s second campaign at the club but he found chances even harder to come by under Claude Puel.

The signing of Mario Lemina this summer has ended any realistic hope Clasie had of fighting his way back into the first team at Saints, as he finds himself behind the new boy, Oriol Romeu and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the pecking order. Pellegrino would also likely prefer Steven Davis and potentially James Ward-Prowse in that position too.

Saints would, therefore, like to move Clasie on for both his good and the club’s, but that will require somebody coming in for him.

Both Crystal Palace and Newcastle are believed to have considered making an offer, and with both looking for new faces in the next couple of days it is possible one of them could be tempted to make a move.

There have been no further developments in the situation with Clasie’s Dutch colleague Virgil van Dijk.

Speculation is inevitably ramping up over the future of the central defender heading into the final days of the window, but Saints have still yet to receive an offer for his services.

Van Dijk remains sure he wants to leave having handed in a transfer request, while Saints do not want to sell.

For all the talk and speculation there has to this point not even been a decision to make, and Saints are hoping it remains that way.

Certainly any notion that they will encourage a bid appears wide of the mark.

Saints do still have half an eye on trying to bring in another attacking player, though the odds are currently thought to be against them adding any further to the squad as they will not spend for the sake of it.

Saints U21 coach: My boys did themselves proud at Peterborough

Show/hide article…

SAINTS Under 21 coach Martin Hunter was delighted with his youngsters for their performance in last night’s 2-0 Checkatrade Trophy defeat at League One leaders Peterborough United.

Posh scored their goals in the opening 21 minutes of the southern section, group C opener at London Road.

Many of the Saints side are still in their teens and Hunter was pleased with the way they responded to conceding from a third-minute corner and a penalty.

He said: “I’m very proud of them for that performance against a team flying at the top of League One.

“During the first 20 minutes there was was a bit of shell shock in terms of the pace and power against senior players.

“We were disappointed to concede from a corner, the first goal was a mistake and I’m not sure about the penalty.

“But some of the passages of play were very good, our pressing throughout was excellent.

“Peterborough played a lot of their first-team players and a lot of lads on that pitch were under 18. That’s fantastic experience for them. We’ve got to take that into the U23 games and the next two rounds of the Checkatrade.”

Next up in this competition is a group game at Cambridge United on October 3.

“For sure there are areas to work on and we’ll do that,” continued Hunter. “The whole back four was solid, the three midfield players grew into the game and we’ve got pace and power up front.

“We just need to be a bit more clinical.

“I’m pleased with all of them. We had chances and theirs came from our poor play. We’ve not been carved open which is pleasing.”

Hunter believes his players will be better for the experience.

“There are plenty of bangs and bruises to get over!” he smiled.

“We’re looking to get exposure for the players to play against men in circumstances that are a lot tougher physically and more demanding and seeing who can handle it and move through the ranks at this football club.

“Three or four did that tonight. I’m delighted with what I’ve seen from our developing youngsters.

“This competition is helpful. Look at [Josh] Sims’ performances last year that got him in the first team. “For those players looking to go out on loan, there were scouts and managers here tonight so it’s a double-edged sword.

“But the old adage at this club is ‘if you’re good enough you’ll get a chance’.”

Virgil Van Dijk: Liverpool prepared to pay £70m for Southampton star - Paul Joyce

Show/hide article…

That’s according to The Times’ Paul Joyce, who says Saints are yet to show any sign of altering their stance that the Dutchman is not for sale.

Van Dijk has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most in-demand players since arriving at St. Mary’s in 2015.

And a summer switch to Anfield appeared to be a formality before Southampton threatened to report Liverpool to the FA amid tapping up allegations.

Jurgen Klopp remains keen on getting Van Dijk on-board as he looks to bolster his defence before the transfer window shuts.
