Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool optimistic about completing deal for Southampton star

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk wants to join Liverpool - and the Reds are said to believe a deal can be done for the Southampton star before the 11pm cut off.

Saints have been adamant all summer they won’t be selling the Dutch centre-back, who is yet to play for the club this season.

But Liverpool believe there could be a late change of heart.

They are willing to pay a mega fee to sign Van Dijk, with reports claiming up to £70m could be spent on getting him on board.

Liverpool set to sign ex-Saint Oxlade-Chamberlain for £40m

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have opened talks with Arsenal over a deal for ex-Saint Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Chelsea appeared to have moved ahead in the race to sign the England international after reportedly having a bid of £40million accepted.

However, Liverpool have been monitoring the situation of the 24-year-old, who is in the final year of his contract, for several months and they made their move to start negotiations this morning.

It is understood Oxlade-Chamberlain never got to the point of discussing personal terms at Stamford Bridge as his preferred destination is Anfield and he was holding out for the Reds to make their move.

Oxlade-Chamberlain helped Saints win promotion from League 1 in 2010/11, before moving to Arsenal as a 17-year-old in the summer of 2011 for around £11m.

Clasie could make Saints exit

Show/hide article…

Jordy Clasie will be allowed to leave Saints before the close of the transfer window if a suitable bid comes in.

The Dutch midfielder does not currently figure in Mauricio Pellegrino’s plans and so Saints are thought to be prepared to sell him if a suitable offer arrives before midnight tomorrow.

Clasie joined Saints for £8m in July 2015, linking up again with Ronald Koeman, who managed him at Feyenoord.

His first season saw him make a limited impact with Koeman explaining that he regularly substituted Clasie as the midfielder was building up his physical level to that required in the Premier League.

Koeman predicted bright things for Clasie in the 26-year-old’s second campaign at the club but he found chances even harder to come by under Claude Puel.

The signing of Mario Lemina this summer has ended any realistic hope Clasie had of fighting his way back into the first team at Saints, as he finds himself behind the new boy, Oriol Romeu and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the pecking order. Pellegrino would also likely prefer Steven Davis and potentially James Ward-Prowse in that position too.

Saints would, therefore, like to move Clasie on for both his good and the club’s, but that will require somebody coming in for him.

Both Crystal Palace and Newcastle are believed to have considered making an offer, and with both looking for new faces in the next couple of days it is possible one of them could be tempted to make a move.

There have been no further developments in the situation with Clasie’s Dutch colleague Virgil van Dijk.

Speculation is inevitably ramping up over the future of the central defender heading into the final days of the window, but Saints have still yet to receive an offer for his services.

Van Dijk remains sure he wants to leave having handed in a transfer request, while Saints do not want to sell.

For all the talk and speculation there has to this point not even been a decision to make, and Saints are hoping it remains that way.

Certainly any notion that they will encourage a bid appears wide of the mark.

Saints do still have half an eye on trying to bring in another attacking player, though the odds are currently thought to be against them adding any further to the squad as they will not spend for the sake of it.

Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Southampton relaxed over transfer, no offer received

Show/hide article…

The Reds have been chasing the Holland international all summer long but the Saints have yet to receive a formal bid.

The Irish Independent say Southampton are relaxed about Van Dijk’s position as he continues to train away from the rest of his team-mates.

After Liverpool were accused of tapping up the 26-year-old earlier this summer, Saints are aware they hold all the cards when it comes to any transfer.

A fee of £70m could tempt Southampton into selling but the Reds have made no bid, according to the reports.

Former Arsenal star Nigel Winterburn thinks Liverpool will look very strong if they end up signing Van Dijk.

Southampton’s Jordy Clasie secures loan move to Club Brugge

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie has completed a loan move to Club Brugge until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old Dutch midfielder, who appeared in 17 Premier League games last season, moved to the south coast two summers ago, following four years at Feyenoord.

Sky Sports news reported that the temporary move was set to be wrapped up earlier on Wednesday and Saints confirmed the transfer later in the day.

Southampton’s vice chairman (Football) Les Reed said: "We have an extremely strong and deep group of midfielders, meaning there is significant competition for places in the team.

"We feel it is beneficial to give Jordy the chance to play regular first-team football over the coming months. This move to a strong Club Brugge side will allow him to do that at a high level.

"This is also an opportunity to develop a relationship for the longer term with Club Brugge, one of Europe’s top football clubs, who regularly qualify for European competition.

"We will remain in regular contact with Jordy throughout the loan spell and will be closely monitoring his progress and performances during his time in Belgium, as we do with all our loanees.

“We wish Jordy and Club Brugge the very best for the rest of the season and hope to see him help them to another Jupiler Pro League title.”

Clasie is a full international but has fallen out of favour at St Mary’s and was recently linked with a summer move to fellow Premier League club Crystal Palace.

Clasie has not played for Southampton this season. Saints signed central midfielder Mario Lemina from Juventus earlier in the summer, while Harrison Reed was sent to Norwich on loan.

Mauricio Pellegrino has also signed defenders Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan and Wesley Hoedt on a five-year deal from Lazio.
