Long used pregnancy breathing trick to help Coleman

Show/hide article…

Shane Long used breathing techniques to help Republic of Ireland team-mate Seamus Coleman, the Southampton striker’s wife has revealed.

Coleman suffered a horrific double leg break during Friday night’s World Cup qualifier against Wales after a tackle from defender Neil Taylor and was seen being consoled by Long.

While Taylor was being sent off by referee Nicola Rizzoli, Long was not simply passing on words of encouragement to his compatriot.

His wife revealed that Long used techniques learned during her pregnancy to help Coleman through the traumatic incident.

‘I had a hypnotherapy birth and they taught Shane to help me to breathe through it,’ Kayleah Long told the Sunday Independent.

'He told me: “It all came back to me. I was just talking to Seamus, teaching him how to breathe through it.” He remembered it all.

‘I asked if Seamus was listening to him and he said, “Yes, to be fair, he was. He was really breathing well”.’

The Everton right-back is expected to be out for at least six months.

Manager Nartin O’Neill revealed on Sunday that the surgery on Coleman, who fractured his right tibia and fibia, had gone to plan.

O’Neill said: ‘He had the operation yesterday morning at 8:30am, that was successful. He has realised everything that has happened and is obviously very disappointed.’

Ireland are second in Group D, four points clear of Chris Coleman’s Wales side, and only trail Serbia courtesy of goal difference.

Stephens and McQueen set for action

Show/hide article…

The Young Lions are visiting Denmark for a friendly encounter, at 6pm BST, with the Saints duo keen to further impress coach Aidy Boothroyd.

Stephens played the full game in last week’s 1-0 friendly defeat away to Germany, while McQueen watched on from the bench.

Both will now be hoping to see some action in Randers this evening.

Ahead of the game, Stephens told TheFA.com: “We’ve got a few things to work on but there are definitely some positives.

“I think we can see that we’re not too far away from where we want to be.

“It [Germany] was a good test for us and good to find out where we are on the scale of things and what we’re going to face in the summer.

“They’re definitely one of the better sides we’ve played but we can take the positives and take it forward into the summer.”

Speaking about the finals, in Poland, Stephens added: “We’ve been very successful in the last two years so it would be nice to go over there and show what we’re about.

“We want to do better and we want to go over there and win it ideally.

“But we’ll take things one step at a time as we have done through the whole of qualification and like we did in Toulon.

“We took a lot of confidence from winning that tournament [last summer], because it was a long time since an England team had won it before we did."

Shane Long helped Seamus Coleman with breathing techniques from wife’s pregnancy

Show/hide article…

Republic of Ireland forward Shane Long used breathing techniques from his wife’s pregnancy to help Seamus Coleman deal with the horrific double leg break he suffered on Friday night.

The Everton full-back underwent surgery on Saturday to pin the tibia and fibula in his right leg after Wales defender Neil Taylor’s challenge during the 0-0 World Cup qualifier draw in Dublin left him in agony and his season over.

Surgeons are confident the 28-year-old will make a full recovery, and Ireland team-mate Long was first to help out his stricken colleague on the Aviva Stadium’s pitch.

“I had a hypnotherapy birth and they taught Shane to help me to breathe through it,” Long’s wife Kayleah told Ireland’s Sunday Independent.

"He told me: ‘It all came back to me. I was just talking to Seamus, teaching him how to breathe through it.’ He remembered it all.

“I asked if Seamus was listening to him and he said, 'Yes, to be fair, he was. He was really breathing well.”

Derby’s Cyrus Christie replaced Coleman on Friday evening but, handed a chance to stake his claim for the right-back spot in the skipper’s absence, admitted he also found it difficult to deal with psychologically.

“That’s not the way you want to come on,” Christie said ahead of Tuesday night’s friendly against Iceland at the Aviva Stadium.

"When they were telling me to warm up, I didn’t even move. I was in shock when I saw his leg. It wasn’t nice.

“It’s tough. You don’t want to come on in a game like that, especially when that’s just happened. I think everyone in the stadium was in shock.”

Davis named Northern Ireland Player of the Year

Show/hide article…

The Saints and Northern Ireland captain topped the public vote to claim the award ahead of his teammates after a memorable 2016.

After being instrumental in helping to secure the Green and White Army’s first major tournament appearance since 1986, Davis was a major force as Northern Ireland reached the knockout stages in France.

Davis has been a key part of the national team since his debut in 2005, and is fourth on the list of all-time appearances with 92 caps.

After receiving the trophy from Vauxhall competition winner Stan Kee, Davis expressed his pride at receiving the award for the second year running.

“It’s an honour to be named Vauxhall Northern Ireland Player of the Year, especially after the fantastic year that we had,” said Davis.

“It’s great to be recognised by our loyal supporters and I am hugely thankful to each and every one of them for voting.

“We have put ourselves in a decent position in our qualifying group for the next major competition and it is up to us to build on the success that we had in 2016.”

Andrew Curley, Head of Sponsorship and Events at Vauxhall, said: “Steven has had a great year in leading his country to success on the field, and he thoroughly deserves his award.

“We are proud of what Northern Ireland have achieved and we look forward to continuing our support in 2017.”
