Southampton’s Cedric Soares targeted by Manchester City - sources

Show/hide article…

Manchester City are tracking Southampton defender Cedric Soares as they look to bolster their defensive options next season, sources close to the Etihad Stadium club have told ESPN FC.

City boss Pep Guardiola has made a new right-back one of his top priorities this summer and sources have told ESPN FC that Portugal international Soares figures on his wanted list.

Current City right-backs Bacary Sagna, 34, and Pablo Zabaleta, 32, are both out of contract this summer and they could both leave as they have yet to be offered new deals.

City have been credited with an interest in Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin and Tottenham’s Kyle Walker, but the club realise it would be hard to prise away either of those two from their direct rivals and Soares may be more a realistic option.

Soares, 25, has impressed at Southampton this season, making 20 Premier League appearances and recording one assist.

The former Sporting Lisbon player has established himself as a key man at St Mary’s since his arrival in the summer of 2015 and he was handed a new deal until 2020 last summer.

Southampton are keen to keep hold of the Euro 2016 winner, but they are bracing themselves for interest in Soares this summer with City and several other big clubs keeping tabs on his progress.

Bertrand helps England to victory

Show/hide article…

Bertrand was one of four Saints players in the squad for the qualifier, at Wembley Stadium, alongside Fraser Forster and senior new boys James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond.

While his three colleagues watched on from the bench, Bertrand again started at left-back for his country, as he had done a few days previously in the 1-0 friendly defeat away to Germany.

The 27-year-old turned in an assured display for the Three Lions, who made the breakthrough midway through the first half, as Raheem Sterling burst in behind the visitors’ defence and picked out Jermain Defoe to side-foot home from about eight yards.

Bertrand came close to setting up a second goal for England when his superb low cross from the left corner of the area found Sterling at the back post, but he was unable to turn the ball in from close range.

England did finally get themselves a cushion in the 66th minute, as an intricate move ended with ex-Saint Adam Lallana’s clever touch freeing Jamie Vardy, who stroked the ball past Lithuania keeper Ernestas Šetkus, not long after coming on for Defoe.

The result further strengthens England’s position at the top of Group F, giving them 13 points from their opening five games, as they reach the halfway mark on the road to next year’s finals, in Russia.

brings you the Merseyside derby, Arsenal v Man City and much more

Show/hide article…

Domestic football is back with a bang this weekend with Sky Sports at the forefront of the live action once more.

It all kicks off on Friday night live on Sky Sports as QPR make the journey north to Pride Park to take on Derby in good form, having won three of their last four league games.

Then, and this is no April Fool, the Merseyside derby kicks off the weekend’s Premier League action on Saturday, with Everton looking in fine fettle since the last clash with their Stanley Park rivals. Liverpool’s far superior derby record in recent times makes them firm favourites in the lunchtime encounter at Anfield. Coverage starts at 11:30am on Sky Sports 1 HD.

And that’s not all on Saturday. There is a tantalising Sky Bet Championship clash between Reading and Leeds on the Saturday Night Football, three La Liga games, including a resurgent Atletico Madrid taking on Malaga at the Rosaleda, three MLS fixtures, Sparta Rotterdam against PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie and Guangzhuo Evergrande’s clash with Shanghai SIPG all live on Sky Sports.

Sunday is similarly crammed full of live matches. Sevilla do battle with La Liga strugglers Sporting Gijon in the day’s first live match, before Hearts’ SPFL clash with league leaders Celtic gets under way on Sky Sports Mix at 12.30pm.

Then, the focus returns to the Premier League, as Swansea take on Middlesbrough at the Liberty Stadium, in a match that could be crucial for both sides in their quest for top flight survival, live on Sky Sports 1 HD. Next up is the small matter of Arsenal’s clash with Manchester City, also live on Sky Sports 1 HD, with the result set to have a major bearing on the top four.

There are four La Liga matches in total on Sunday, with Barcelona travelling to Andalusia to take on Granada in the day’s final match from Spain. The action in the Netherlands hots up as Ajax’s clash with great rivals Feyenoord completes a Eredvisie double header on Sky Sports 3 HD, while Coventry take on Oxford United in the Checkatrade Trophy to leave you completely spoiled for choice.

Liverpool free to land Prem star as Antonio Conte decides on different No.1 Chelsea target

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk: Chelsea are ready to leave Liverpool in the clear to sign the Southampton star

Van Dijk is one of the Premier League’s most-wanted. The Dutch defender has been a rock at the back for Southampton since arriving for Celtic in 2015. Chelsea have been keeping a close eye on the 25-year-old as boss Conte eyes up a new defender.

But the Sunday Express report he’s more interested in Napoli centre-back Koulibaly instead. The Serie A star was wanted by Chelsea in a £48m switch last summer. A move didn’t come off, and the Blues signed David Luiz instead.

But Conte could now attempt a fresh swoop at the end of the current campaign. Captain John Terry looks to be heading out, and the club will want a top-class replacement. Chelsea’s interest in Koulibaly leaves Liverpool in the clear to sign him, according the Express.

Arsenal youngster Nathan Tella moves to Southampton after trial spell

Show/hide article…

Arsenal teenager Nathan Tella has said he is joining Southampton after a decade at the North London club.

Tella, 17, has signed for the club after playing for the under-18s on trial against Leicester earlier this month.

The winger wrote on his Instagram page: "After a great 10 years at Arsenal, sadly I have to move on to a new challenge.

"Thank you everyone who has helped me over the past 10 years to make into the player I am.

“I will miss the boys and hope they all have a great career. However, I am delighted to sign with Southampton and can’t wait to see what the future holds for me at this club.”
