Shane Long reveals how he kept Seamus Coleman calm after horror leg break

Show/hide article…

As Seamus Coleman lay on the ground after suffering a horrific leg break whilst playing for Ireland, his teammate Shane Long helped in the only way he knew how - by applying a technique that aids pregnancy.

Coleman had to be taken off on a stretcher after suffering the break in a challenge with Wales’ Neil Taylor during the world cup qualifier on Friday.

And whilst others would have no doubt preferred to look away, the Liverpool Echo reports that Long rushed to support his friend by putting the calming method into practice as Coleman received oxygen whilst on the pitch.

“I was just trying to settle and relax him,” the Southampton striker would later reveal.

And Long may have used some techniques learned during his wife’s pregnancy in order to do so.

Wife Kayleah told the Sunday Independent: “I had a hypnotherapy birth and they taught Shane to help me to breathe through it.

“He told me: ‘It all came back to me. I was just talking to Seamus, teaching him how to breathe through it.’ He remembered it all.

“I asked if Seamus was listening to him and he said, ‘Yes, to be fair, he was. He was really breathing well.”

Kayleah added that Coleman sent Long a text message after the game to thank him for his support during the immediate aftermath of the injury.

Coleman underwent successful surgery in Dublin on Saturday, and will now begin the long road back to fitness. He is expected to be missing until the end of the year.

Shane Long’s wife reveals what he said to comfort Seamus Coleman

Show/hide article…

Shane Long used breathing techniques he learned during his wife’s pregnancy to help comfort his stricken Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman, it has been revealed.

Long was seen talking to Coleman and embracing the full-back as he received treatment on a horrific double fracture of his right leg, caused by a strong challenge by Wales defender Neil Taylor.

Ireland’s medical staff gave Coleman oxygen before carrying him off the Aviva Stadium pitch and taking him to St Vincent’s University Hospital, where he underwent successful surgery.

Kayleagh Long, Shane’s wife, has now revealed what her husband said while attempting to keep Coleman calm and prevent further aggravation of the injured leg.

“I had a hypnotherapy birth and they taught Shane to help me to breathe through it,” she told the Sunday Independent.

“He told me: ‘It all came back to me. I was just talking to Seamus, teaching him how to breathe through it.’ He remembered it all.

“I asked if Seamus was listening to him and he said, 'Yes, to be fair, he was. He was really breathing well.”

Kayleagh also revealed that Coleman later sent a text message to Shane to thank him for his words of comfort.

After the ill-tempered 0-0 draw with Wales, Long merely claimed to have been “trying to settle and relax” Coleman while he spoke with him.

Coleman, who has impressed this season at club level for Ronald Koeman’s Everton, remains in hospital recovering from the injury.

Martin O’Neill, the Ireland manager, is confident that Coleman will return stronger from the injury, but has said no timescale is currently set on the 28-year-old’s return.

"Even the doctors and surgeons wouldn’t be terribly sure [when he will return],” he told BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek.

“Sometimes there are complications afterwards and injuries can be more prolonged, other times it can be clean and clear sailing.

“It will take some time but Seamus has great determination and sometimes those things work very much in your favour, in terms of recovery.”

Arsenal gossip: Gunners ‘tempted by Southampton star’s release clause’

Show/hide article…

Arsenal could move for Dusan Tadic after reports that he has a release clause of just £13million.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Southampton star is attracting interest from the Gunners as well as Italian sides because of his price tag.

Juventus and Napoli are also believed to have taken an interest.

Arsene Wenger is known to like a bargain and Tadic, one of Southampton’s brightest talents, fits the bill.

Tadic scored a penalty and assisted two strikes as Serbia defeated Georgia on Friday night.

Mesut Ozil has insisted he is “very comfortable” at Arsenal in the biggest indication yet that he will sign a new deal, writes Mirror Football’s Liam Prenderville.

Ozil has around 15 months remaining on his current Emirates contract and talks over an extension have been put on hold.

Alexis Sanchez is also out of contract in the summer of 2018 but any decision is likely to be influenced by Arsene Wenger’s next step.

The Frenchman is yet to confirm if he will sign a new deal but it appears he will spend at least one more season in north London.

Despite talks stalling, Ozil has indicated he remains happy at Arsenal.

“I am contracted until 2018 and I feel very comfortable,” he told German newspaper Die Welt.

“We’ll talk soon and then make a decision.”

Olivier Giroud has admitted he could work under a different manager like Jose Mourinho or Antonio Conte , writes Mirror Football’s Jake Polden.

The France international, who scored twice in his nation’s 3-1 win over Luxembourg on Saturday, was talking about different types of coaches in world football when he made the comment.

In an interview with L’Equipe Magazine, the 30-year-old was asked whether he could see himself playing under the current Manchester United or Chelsea boss.

Giroud replied: "As an idea, why not? Each experience is good to live through. I would adapt.

"At Montpellier in 2011-12, Rene Girard was of the fighting mentality, of a player who never gave up, of open-mindedness, of fight. A barker.

“We were the champions of France with him.”

Bertrand reflects on positive week

Show/hide article…

The Saints left-back started both the 1-0 friendly defeat away to Germany and the 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Lithuania, at Wembley.

“Despite the result earlier, there were a few positives we managed to draw from the previous fixture,” he told southamptonfc.com after Sunday night’s fixture. "It was important that we went out today, got the win and showed that progression.

“It’s a difficult game when they come and they sit off and try to frustrate you, but more often than not we managed to keep a good tempo and managed to get the goals.”

England prevailed against Lithuania thanks to strikes from Jermain Defoe and Jamie Vardy in either half, keeping them top of Group F, with 13 points from five games, as they moved into a commanding position at the halfway stage of qualifying.

“We’ve got our individual team targets we want to hit, and we’re just going to concentrate on each game as it comes and keep ticking off the boxes,” said Bertrand, who was also pleased to produce two strong individual displays.

“On a personal note it’s good to play for your country and get the starts in. You just hope you can do well enough to leave a good enough performance in the manager’s mind for the coming fixtures too.”

Davis captains Irish to win

Show/hide article…

After making the European Championship finals for the first time last summer, Michael O’Neill’s side are now looking to reach a first World Cup since 1986.

They boosted their chances with the win over Norway, in Belfast, with the result taking their total to ten points from five games, putting them second in Group C, behind Germany, at the halfway stage of qualifying for the 2018 finals, in Russia.

The Irish did the damage in the first half, as Jamie Ward gave them a perfect start, scoring inside two minutes.

His effort was then followed up by Conor Washington half-an-hour later.

Northern Ireland had other opportunities to extend their lead, but the two goals proved enough, as they ran out comfortable victors.

Out of position XI: Alan Smith, Javier Mascherano, Michael Owen feature

Show/hide article…

James Milner has thrived at left-back for Liverpool. But which other players have had success in different positions?

Having previously played in midfield, Milner has impressed in defence for the Reds, even though he admits he does not like the role.

With Milner’s switch in mind, here’s an XI of some others players who have performed out of position…

Not only did the former Mexico international play as a goalkeeper and a striker, but he sometimes played both positions during the same game.

During a match between Atlante and Cruz Azul in 1996, Campos was taken out of goal and stuck up front, with a substitute goalkeeper taking his place between the sticks.

For someone who does not like playing at left-back, Milner has done a more than serviceable job in the position for Liverpool this season.

Previously used in midfield at club level and internationally, it was Jurgen Klopp who decided to give Milner a go at left-back.

“Football has changed in the last few years and you need different players with different skills for different positions than before,” explained the Reds boss.

Primarily a midfielder, Carrick has played at centre-back a few times throughout his career.

He was deployed there by Louis van Gaal in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Liverpool in December 2014 and also against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League last season.

With his height and ball-playing skills he has some key centre-back attributes - but Jose Mourinho is yet to give the idea a trial.

Not only did Mascherano play in midfield during his time in the Premier League at West Ham and Liverpool, but he also plays there with Argentina, including in the 2014 World Cup final.

However, at Barcelona he has been used at centre-back, and puts it down to a tackle he made on Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner in 2011.

“That tackle changed everything,” he told The Guardian. “I found my position and I’ve been there all these years, trying to keep my place and keep this level.”

A winger during his time with Reading, Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest, Antonio has been used on the right side of defence at West Ham.

“It is hard work playing full-back but as a winger, I go up and down anyway, so it’s not much of a difference,” he said.

“It’s just one of those things, no matter what position you play me, I’m still going to try to get up there and get a goal.”

Antonio has also played as a striker for the Hammers, proving to be a useful utility player for Slaven Bilic.

Smith caught the eye as a forward at Leeds, scoring nine goals in the 1998/99 season and then 18 in 2000/01 as part of the side that reached the Champions League semi-finals.

However, he was moved to the right of midfield by David O’Leary and then played as a central and defensive midfielder at Manchester United and Newcastle.

As he dropped down the leagues with MK Dons and Notts County he would play both up front and also in the middle of the pitch.

Rooney’s role has caused plenty of debate in recent years.

As a striker he has scored enough goals to become England and Manchester United’s leading scorer, but as he has got older he has dropped deeper at club and international level.

Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith said in October that Gareth Southgate faces questions over Rooney’s future. “For Rooney, I think he sees his future for England in that withdrawn position. The question is, does the manager see that?”

Right-back Zabaleta has been used in midfield on several occasions during his time at Manchester City, most recently by Pep Guardiola against Celtic in the Champions League.

“He is really good at arriving in the box,” explained Guardiola. “In the last years of his career, he is going to play more in the middle than at full-back. He has the qualities.”

The former Liverpool and England striker said it was an “eye-opener” to play in a deeper-lying role under Kevin Keegan at Newcastle. “I had been a striker all my life. Yet there was a real good feeling about that new role,” he said.

Keegan would later say that he thought Owen could have extended his career by playing in midfield.

“Having worked with him, he could have played on for another two, three years as a midfield player, a really, world-class midfield player,” he said.

A defender turned striker turned defender, Dublin started out at the back for Norwich before impressing up front for Coventry and then Aston Villa. However, it was at Villa that he moved back into defence, a role that he appeared to take to with ease.

“I remember when I was marking Wayne Rooney, playing centre-back for Villa, and he told me I was the best centre-back he’d played against,” said Dublin.

“He said he couldn’t do anything, even though he was faster than me, and it’s because I was anticipating where the ball would go.”

Magennis made the transition from goalkeeper to striker, having started out between the sticks as a youngster at Cardiff. “If I stayed a goalkeeper I was going home,” he said about the move.

The Northern Ireland international also revealed how the decision caused surprise among team-mates when he turned up for an Under-19s match. "I showed up without my gloves and they were saying, “what’s going on?”’ he said.

Charlton’s Magennis has since won more than 20 caps for his country at senior level.
