Redmond hopes for more appearances

Show/hide article…

The Saints player made his Three Lions debut in last week’s 1-0 friendly defeat in Germany, while he was part of the squad for Sunday’s 2-0 home win over Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier.

“It’s been a good experience,” said Redmond, following England’s victory at Wembley.

"I’m obviously delighted to have played a part in one of the games and made my debut, so it’s sort of a stepping stone and a building step for me.

“It’s been a fantastic week training with the lads and to finish it off with the most important thing, which was a win in this group, is a good thing for all the boys and it keeps our spirits going into next week for our clubs.”

Looking back on his debut, as he came off the bench in the second half in Germany, Redmond said: "It was mixed emotions coming on. I was delighted to have done that, but then obviously the most important thing would be the result.

“But I’m delighted to have made my debut, got it out of the way, and now I can hopefully focus on putting performances in for the club and hopefully it will lead to being in the senior squad.”

Southampton’s Oriol Romeu happy at club despite Barcelona return links

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu has said he wants to stay at the club amid reports linking him with a potential return to Barcelona.

Romeu, 25, stressed that he feels contented on the south coast after becoming a key player in Claude Puel’s team this season.

The Southampton Echo quoted him as saying that being linked with Barcelona “is always something nice.”

But he added: "I’ve been at Chelsea and Barcelona and haven’t played, and I don’t want to have this feeling.

"I’m feeling very happy here, and I won’t give this away.

"The club has given me a massive welcome since the beginning, signing a new contract in January, and this support and confidence they have given me is something that no one has done before.

“I’m very pleased with what they’ve done for me and I just want to give this love back.”

Romeu, who signed from Chelsea in a £5 million deal in August 2015, said he felt he had also taken on an important role off the pitch.

“I feel respected. If teammates have problems, sometimes they come and ask me,” he added.

"I’m an important part of the dressing room, which in the way you play gives you that respect.

“It’s something I’ve always been looking for, and now that I have it I’m really enjoying it.”

Man City keen on Prem star: Summer raid could have disastrous knock on effects on Arsenal

Show/hide article…

City boss Pep Guardiola is eager to sign at least two new full-backs at the end of the season to help revamp his ageing defence.

ESPN claim that Portugal international Soares is now firmly on City’s radar and seen as an achievable target.

The Saints ace would be able to slot straight into their starting line-up and would not need time to adjust to life in England like some of City’s other targets further afield.

Forster: Big future ahead for Saints duo

Show/hide article…

Both players made their full Three Lions debut in last week’s 1-0 friendly defeat in Germany, having been selected in the squad for the first time.

Forster, who is a mainstay of the England set-up, believes he will be seeing them plenty more times in the future for country, as well as club.

“It’s been brilliant,” said the keeper, who was also in the squad alongside fellow regular Ryan Bertrand. "It’s been a fantastic week.

"Berty’s played both games and obviously for these two to get their first caps is something special for them and they’ll use that to kick on and it’ll be the first of many for both of them.

“It was a good week for us at Southampton, but also a good result [2-0 against Lithuania] and a clean sheet and three more points, so it ticks another box on the way to next summer.”

The Saints quartet now return to their club ahead of a busy week that will see them play three games in eight days, starting with Saturday’s home game against Bournemouth, before they host Crystal Palace and then visit West Brom.

“It’s very important,” said Forster. "I think we need to get a few results and obviously get that momentum and it would set us up nicely going into the end of the season.

“We still want to have a strong finish and we need to win the games that we’ve got coming up.”

McQueen features in Young Lions success

Show/hide article…

The left-back was given the opportunity to impress coach Aidy Boothroyd ahead of this summer’s European Championship finals and he duly turned in a strong performance.

McQueen himself went close to scoring in the 25th minute, only to be denied by keeper Jeppe Hojbjerg.

By then, though, the Young Lions were already 2-0 up, through efforts from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Solly March.

They continued their dominance after the break, with Cauley Woodrow extending the advantage, before Loftus-Cheek added his second of the night to round off the scoring.

McQueen’s Saints teammate Jack Stephens, who played the full game in last week’s visit to Germany, was an unused substitute.

Saints Foundation set to expand education programme

Show/hide article…

The two-year programme, which has been delivered at St Mary’s Stadium since 2011, will be launching in Fleet, Basingstoke, Salisbury, Newport and the Isle of Wight as of September 2017.

As well as studying for a BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and training every week, students will also have the opportunity to improve their footballing skills and work towards gaining a career in sport.

This development will be supported by 6-8 hours a week of training with FA qualified coaches, as well as time in a small classroom setting, within which students will be supported on a one-to-one basis.

Those enrolled in the course will also gain work experience opportunities with the wider Saints Foundation programmes.

All abilities will be catered for within the course to ensure that each student has a pathway to fulfil their own potential. A competitive fixture programme will also be included, and preparing for competitive games will be a key part of the daily training.

Andrew Hunt, Education Satellite Co-ordinator said: I’m very excited to be involved in this and with the staff we have here, the players and students will be learning from the best.

“I truly believe this is the perfect platform for students wanting to enhance themselves both on and off the pitch and I am proud we are now able to open it up to a larger audience.”

Mark Gamble, Education Manager at Saints Foundation added: “From the success we’ve had over the last six years running the programme at the stadium, it has been a natural progression for us to open it up.

“We are very proud of what we do here and our passion is to continue to grow this in wider areas. We want more people to be aware of Saints Foundation and be able to benefit from the fantastic work being done across all of our programmes.”

For more information on this programme, including open evening dates at each site, please contact Andy Hunt at ahunt@saintsfc.co.uk.
