Pellegrino: It could be a big point

Show/hide article…

Substitute Manolo Gabbiaidini’s 90th-minute strike earned Saints a draw when it looked as though Ashley Barnes’s scrambled effort midway through the second half was going to separate the sides at Turf Moor.

Gabbiadini’s first goal since October lifted Pellegrino’s team two places in the table and took them out of the relegation zone ahead of next weekend’s big home game against Stoke City.

“I think in the way that we equalised we can be happy because it was really difficult, after conceding against this side who don’t concede too much themselves,” said the Saints boss.

"But, obviously, we have to analyse well, because we have to improve in different aspects – how can we play against those teams who will press and are really aggressive physically, and who try to put you under pressure all the time?

"I think our concentration was good, and our intensity too, but I think we were a little bit nervous in some moments. When you don’t want to take any risks sometimes the ball is always in the air and for us it was difficult to play.

“We had a couple of chances to equalise and at the end we got this goal that allowed us to get one point. It’s not the best, but in this moment one point can be the big difference at the end.”

Burnley 1 Southampton 1: Late Manolo Gabbiadini strike rescues Saints

Show/hide article…

Sean Dyche’s Clarets were as high as fourth in December, but their European dreams have diminished thanks to a lengthy run without a Premier League victory.

Ashley Barnes looked to have propelled Burnley to a much-needed victory, only for their winless top flight run to extend to an 11th match as Gabbiadini fired home late on to snatch Saints a 1-1 draw.

All eyes were on referee Bobby Madley after the goal. His inadvertent block on Burnley’s Ashley Westwood allowed Saints to break, with Gabbiadini smashing home after Guido Carrillo cut the ball back.

Barnes’ close-range header looked to worsen Saints’ plight at Turf Moor, only for the last-gasp leveller to see the visitors sneak a point that had looked beyond them.

This is a match that may be remembered for controversy but not quality.

England manager Gareth Southgate must have been questioning his decision to come to Turf Moor during a first half devoid of entertainment.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson headed wide and Aaron Lennon got a snapshot on target for the hosts, while Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope denied Dusan Tadic with a fine one-handed save at the other end.

January signing Lennon was denied by a timely block from Oriol Romeu after Nathan Redmond saw an attempt stopped at the other end - but neither side had grabbed the match by the scruff of the neck.

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton’s subs changed the game in their draw with Burnley

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton’s subs changed the game in their draw with Burnley

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino said his substitutes changed the game as two combined to score a late equaliser in their 1-1 draw at Burnley.

Manolo Gabiaddini scored in the final minute of normal time to rescue the Saints a point, with the goal made by fellow sub Josh Sims as Saints moved two places outside the relegation zone.

Southampton only managed two touches inside the Burnley box before half-time, and although they improved after half-time it was only after falling behind, and the introduction of Sims in particular, that they began to look dangerous.

Pellegrino said: "It was difficult. Burnley are a team who don’t concede too many, but we have a good feeling because the game was tight without too many chances for either side.

“The substitutions had a big impact on the team. Hopefully Manolo can regain his confidence. We’ve got 10 games and I need everybody to be ready to contribute.”

The calls for a foul by Gabbiadini in the build-up to the goal were so strong that Ashley Barnes was cautioned for his protests to referee Bobby Madley, but Pellegrino felt there was no case to answer for his Italian forward, after his first goal for five months.

“I was thinking about my team. When you lose two points at the end it’s massive and every team wants to win,” he added.

“I don’t think there was a foul by Monolo, I think people were complaining more about the referee’s block, but the referee didn’t intend to do it.”

Premier League: SIX THINGS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED FROM SATURDAY’S ACTION

Show/hide article…

The last Sunday in February is a date reserved for the League Cup final, while this year also has the small matter of Manchester United vs Chelsea and Crystal Palace vs Tottenham to add to the mix. But there was still plenty to discuss in Saturday’s Premier League action.

Mohamed Salah equalled Luis Suarez’ goal haul from 2013-14 en route to a thumping Liverpool victory against West Ham and there were also victories for Huddersfield and Brighton.

Here, Sportsmail brings you a round-up of all the things you might have missed from Saturday’s action.

Shaqiri arrived at Stoke a Champions League winner with five league titles. When Stoke signed the tricky Swiss winger, it was viewed as a coup, and now he is beginning to find his best form.

His strike against Leicester was his third in as many games, the first time he’s scored in three consecutive games in his career, with his form coinciding with the arrival of new manager Paul Lambert.

Since the Scot arrived at the bet365 stadium, Shaqiri has scored three goals and clocked one assist in five games, whilst his effort against Leicester ranks him among the league’s best scorers from long range.

Since August 2015, Shaqiri has scored nine goals from outside the box, trailing only Gylfi Sigurdsson, Kevin De Bruyne and Harry Kane, who’ve 10 goals from distance to their name, with the recently-departed Coutinho leading the way with 14.

By now Mohamed Salah’s incredible goalscoring feats are no secret. He has 31 goals in his first 37 games as a Liverpool player, an identical record to that of Luis Suarez’s last season at Anfield. The Uruguayan was idolised for his feats, and so too is Salah.

Some Liverpool fans unveiled a giant banner which read ‘Egyptian King’, a fitting description for the winger who’s made his £37m transfer fee look a bargain and scored the penalty that sealed Egypt’s qualification for their first World Cup since 1990.

The banner itself is very well-assembled, made using what appears to be a water-proof red plastic, with the city’s Liver Bird stamp etched into the background, finished with a cleverly-designed image of Salah dressed as Egyptian royalty.

Whilst Suarez and Salah live long in the memories of some, so too does Matt Ritchie, but for different reasons.

The Scot infamously dropped down a division to sign with Newcastle in the Championship for a fee of £12m in 2016. That decision doesn’t sit well with all Bournemouth fans, so much so, that some fans voiced their dissatisfaction in the form of a banner which pales to Salah’s ‘Egyptian King’ montage.

This particular banner reads ‘Grown as a cheery, stolen by a magpie’, using simple images of the red fruit and the black bird behind black card to illustrate this. The banner looks like a bit of a last-minute effort from the unhappy Bournemouth fans, who saw their side rally back from two goals down to snatch a point against Newcastle.

The last time Liverpool scored 100 goals in a season, their attacking trio was none other than Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling. Each of those have moved onto pastures new, but there’s a new front-three in Merseyside to be excited by.

Emre Can’s header against West Ham was the 100th goal Klopp’s side have scored this season, with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane accounting for 63 of those.

It’s also the first time since 2013-14 that Liverpool have hit a century of goals in a season, suggesting the ghosts of the ‘SAS’ have finally been replaced, and perhaps bettered, depending on your opinion.

The ‘dubious goal panel’, or in other words, The Premier League Match Centre, won’t be getting any Christmas cards from a certain Chelsea loanee anytime soon.

Tammy Abraham’s deflected shot was originally credited as a goal for him, but after review, it was ruled as an own-goal by Lewis Dunk, his third of the season.

In response to this, Abraham voiced his opinion on the matter on Twitter, quote-tweeting a tweet from the Premier League that announced that goal switch with ‘cheers’.

Not many managers can they say have a win over Liverpool at Anfield on their resume, but after more than 10 attempts, you may expect one win to creep up somewhere, but not David Moyes, who is without an Anfield victory in 14 games.

As manager of Everton, Man United, Sunderland and West Ham, Moyes is yet to leave the iconic Merseyside ground with a victory, drawing seven and losing the rest.

‘If you want to say we’re five points from the relegation zone, then carry on. I’ll tell you that we’re six points behind Burnley, who are apparently having a fantastic season’ were the words of Watford captain Troy Deeney in his programme notes.

Deeney was alluding to the fact that Burnley’s season is viewed as a success, but Watford’s is apparently a shaky one, despite their being just two wins between the two sides prior to kick-off.

McCarthy: That shows our spirit

Show/hide article…

Saints trailed to Ashley Barnes’s goal midway through the second half until substitute Manolo Gabbiadini fired home on the turn in the 90th minute at Turf Moor.

The hosts were left aggrieved after it appeared one of the Burnley players was blocked off by the referee in the build-up to the equaliser – some good fortune McCarthy feels has been lacking this season.

“Obviously coming away to Burnley we knew it was going to be a tough game, but to get the point in the end is massive,” said the goalkeeper.

“We haven’t had a lot of luck this season, but getting that bit of luck has obviously resulted in a goal for us.

“It wasn’t going to be a pretty game, but the boys stuck together and we got the point in the end.

“We’ve got great character in this group and a great squad with great players.

“The boys still think we could’ve done better out there – we know we can – but there are a lot of positives we can take into Stoke next week.”
