Watch match highlights of Burnley 1-1 Southampton

Show/hide article…

Super substitute Manolo Gabbiadini helped relegation-threatened Southampton snatch a controversial last-gasp point to prolong Burnley’s winless run with a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor.

Sean Dyche’s Clarets were as high as fourth in December, but their European dreams have diminished thanks to a lengthy run without a Premier League victory.

Ashley Barnes looked to have propelled Burnley to a much-needed victory, only for their winless top-flight run to extend to an 11th match as Gabbiadini fired home late on to snatch Saints a 1-1 draw.

All eyes were on referee Bobby Madley after the goal. His inadvertent block on Burnley’s Ashley Westwood allowed Saints to break, with Gabbiadini smashing home after Guido Carrillo cut the ball back.

Barnes’ close-range header looked to worsen Saints’ plight at Turf Moor, only for the last-gasp leveller to see the visitors sneak a point that had looked beyond them.

Burnley 1-1 Southampton: Gabbiadini earns Saints late point

Show/hide article…

Sean Dyche’s Clarets were as high as fourth in December, but their European dreams have diminished thanks to a lengthy run without a Premier League victory.

Ashley Barnes looked to have propelled Burnley to a much-needed victory, only for their winless top flight run to extend to an 11th match as Gabbiadini fired home late on to snatch Saints a 1-1 draw.

This is a match that may be remembered for controversy but not quality.

England manager Gareth Southgate must have been questioning his decision to come to Turf Moor during a first half devoid of entertainment.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson headed wide and Aaron Lennon got a snapshot on target for the hosts, while Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope denied Dusan Tadic with a fine one-handed save at the other end.

January signing Lennon was denied by a timely block from Oriol Romeu after Nathan Redmond saw an attempt stopped at the other end - but neither side had grabbed the match by the scruff of the neck.

Referee Madley’s whistle brought respite from the first-half drudgery, a break in play that resulted in both sides upping the ante a notch.

Redmond saw both a cross and attempt blocked, while Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy did well to prevent Jeff Hendrick going through.

Barnes nodded wide for Burnley, but the hosts would not be denied for long.

Cedric Soares inexplicably allowed Lennon to move onto his right foot and swing in a cross to the back post. Gudmundsson’s ball across was pushed out by Hendrick, whose header back towards goal was glanced in by Barnes.

Things could have got worse had McCarthy been sent off for handling outside the area, but the Southampton goalkeeper stayed on as his team tried to equalise.

Pope, so impressive since Tom Heaton’s injury, superbly tipped sub Sims’ shot onto the post, while Carrillo and Jack Stephens saw tame headers denied.

Saints looked bound for defeat until Madley’s block on Westwood allowed Redmond through. The ball went wide to Sims and the cross was headed back by Carrillo, with Gabbiadini rifling in.

Burnley 1-1 Southampton: Pellegrino relieved as Saints overcome nerves

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino wants Saints to lose the nerves as they prepare for a crucial relegation clash with Stoke.

The Saints boss felt his side were edgy at Burnley, only grabbing a point with a late Manolo Gabbiadini equaliser at Turf Moor.

Pellegrino is taking his players away for a couple of days of warm weather training before a return to the cold of Staplewood where they will complete preparations for a vital match against the Potters.

Pellegrino felt Saints were good value for the point at Burnley, even given the nerves.

He said: “I think the game was really tight from the beginning until the end.

“I imagined this type of game from before because they are a team that don’t concede too much, defensively they are really well organised and they try to put their opponent under pressure with direct play and second ball. In this aspect they are maybe a little bit better than us.

“We were really focussed mentally, we play with aggressiveness but I think we were a little bit nervous and didn’t play in the way I think we can do it.

“In the second half we start to do a little bit better, we create a couple of chances, but in the way we equalise I think it’s a fair result.”

Saints Together week set to begin

Show/hide article…

The week of action, which starts from tomorrow, sets out the connection between the club, Saints Foundation and the local community.

It will culminate in the home Premier League clash with Stoke City next Saturday, which will be the Foundation’s official charity match, with various activities taking place at St Mary’s.

Throughout the week, the club will be promoting different areas of Saints Foundation, detailing its wide variety of programmes, while telling the inspirational stories of some of its participants.

Videos will feature stars such as first-team player Charlie Austin and Olympic and World Championship medallist Iwan Thomas finding out about the work of the Foundation, while the Stoke programme will include a host of features about the work that goes on.

The campaign will then be wrapped up at the Saints Together charity dinner, at St Mary’s, on Wednesday 7th March.

Pellegrino praises Sims impact

Show/hide article…

The 20-year-old came off the bench late on to play a crucial role in Manolo Gabbiadinio’s 90th-minute equaliser, crossing for Guido Carrillo to head back to the Italian striker to lash in from close range.

It was one of a number of moments of threat from Sims, who had came close to cancelling out Ashley Barnes’s scrambled goal himself within moments of coming on, only for Clarets keeper Nick Pope to somehow flick his goal-bound shot against the post.

Having returned in mid-January following a long lay-off with a knee injury, Pellegrino is pleased to have Sims as an option ahead of the final weeks of the campaign.

“Josh is an intelligent guy and is getting better every single week,” he said. "He’s homegrown also.

“He can make an impact and help us in these games that are really tight and really close, because his pace is the main weapon and we are happy with that.”

Pellegrino added: “It’s important that everybody has to be ready to help the team and Southampton will be stronger the more players are physically and mentally ready.”
