Burnley vs Southampton live score and goal updates - latest here

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini scored a dramatic last-minute equaliser to salvage a precious points for Southampton in their fight for survival.

Gabbiadini came off the bench to score within nine minutes of his introduction to lift Saints out of the bottom three.

His goal frustrated Burnley and they thought they were about to record their first win since December 12 after Ashley Barnes gave them the lead midway through the second half.

Southampton threatened early on through Dusan Tadic and his curled effort, struck with the outside of his left foot, beat Nick Pope, but not Ben Mee’s outstretched leg.

Nathan Redmond then had a drive saved by Pope as Southampton searched for the breakthrough.

Burnley’s best effort was a shot from Aaron Lennon which was blocked by the impressive Oriol Romeu.

Alex McCarthy then showed great bravery to save at the feet of Jeff Hendrick and took a kick in the face for his troubles.

The game desperately needed a goal to to liven it up and Burnley obliged midway through the second half.

Lennon crossed to the back post where Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s shot was saved by McCarthy and when Hendrick headed the rebound goalwards, Barnes nipped in ahead of the Saints keeper to finish from close range.

It was Barnes’ fifth of the campaign and it says it all about Burnley’s lack of goals that he is now their joint-top scorer with Chris Wood.

Southampton responded and Pope impressed the watching Gareth Southgate with a brilliant fingertip save to touch substitute Josh Sims’ shot against the post and frustrate the visitors.

With seconds remaining, Guido Carrillo nodded Sims’ cross back across goal for Gabbiadini to control and fire home with Burnley appealing in vain for a push on Kevin Long.

Burnley 1-1 Southampton: Manolo Gabbiadini rescues Saints

Show/hide article…

If European football is the aim for Burnley, then they are going a difficult way about it. Sean Dyche and his players could do no wrong earlier in the season but they were without a win since December before Ashley Barnes’ goal gave them hope of ending that torrid run.

It was, of course, blown away in controversial circumstances when Southampton substitute Manolo Gabbiadini scored after appearing to drag Kevin Long to the ground before firing past goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Frustration for Dyche, who thought his side had done enough to win until that moment. A win that would have strengthened their position in seventh place, with Burnley primed to qualify for the Europa League.

‘You can only control the controllables,’ he said. ‘Those things were out of our control today and went against us. I feel for our fans because they just want an even contest and they want to see a win. Apart from Nick Pope making a fantastic save I think we’ve delivered a good enough performance today to get a win.

‘Kevin Long is pulled by his shirt and he goes down. There wasn’t a lot in that by the way but it’s important to reference the whole league when everyone goes down for that and everyone gets a free-kick for that normally, which we didn’t.’

For Mauricio Pellegrino, then, a glimmer of hope. His side out of the bottom three for the second time this year. But he must know that his side have to do better if they are to stop being talked about as relegation candidates.

They dallied in the opening stages here. Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Jeff Hendrick both had chances to punish them but they couldn’t convert.

Dusan Tadic is one player Southampton need to see more from. Four goals and three assists this season is a poor return for someone who is relied on to create problems for opposition defence.

Burnley’s Pope nearly did all the hard work for him when his poor clearance led to Nathan Redmond finding the Serbian inside the Burnley penalty area. He took a touch before driving a left-foot shot towards the bottom left corner of the goal but Pope got a touch on it and captain Ben Mee cleared.

Sensing the atmosphere was getting a little flat, the home supporters inside the James Hargreaves Stand increased the volume.

Their players responded. Right back Matthew Lowton played a first-time ball back across the Saints penalty area. Barnes was able to control it and passed to Aaron Lennon 12 yards out but his shot was blocked by Oriol Romeu.

It just about summed up the way Burnley have been playing recently.

‘Come on Dyche, sort it out,’ came the cry from one supporter as both sets of players trudged off at the break.

They needed a spark. Something to liven things up. The home fans were half off their seats when Hendrick ran towards the Southampton goal but goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was out quick to stop him from having a shot.

By now, Burnley were directing most of their passes down the left side. Lennon, even at the age of 30, is still quick enough to nip inside before causing havoc.

That’s exactly what he did when he controlled the ball just outside McCarthy’s area. He jinked past Cedric Soares and swung the ball into the far post. Berg Gudmundsson cushioned a pass back to Hendrick before Barnes’ header forced the ball over the line.

How they had worked incredibly hard to create that opening. But it nearly unravelled when Southampton substitute Josh Sims got a clear sight of the Burnley goal. The 20-year-old’s right-foot hit the post after Pope got his fingertips to the ball. Some save.

But Sims was giving Southampton’s fans in the away end a reason to believe. Indeed, once the ball arrived to him on the right in stoppage time his contribution would prove pivotal. He crossed to Carrillo at the back post. He helped the ball down to Gabbiadini, who after fending off Long, struck with his left foot to send the ball past Pope. The Burnley players sprinted to referee Bobby Madley but he saw nothing wrong and the goal stood.

He said: ‘I think the game was really tight from the beginning until the end. I imagined this type of game from before because they are a team that don’t concede too much. But in the way we equalise I think it’s a fair result.’

Manolo Gabbiadini strikes late to salvage draw for Southampton at Burnley

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini’s first goal since mid-October rescued a much-needed point for Southampton as a game that had offered little drama produced an unexpected finale 20 seconds from the end of normal time.

A far-post cross from substitute Josh Sims was met by Guido Carrillo who headed back across goal for Gabbiadini, who barged defender Kevin Long aside, before burying the ball into the roof of the goal from six yards.

Referee Bobby Madley turned down Burnley appeals for a foul and the frustration for home manager Sean Dyche was all too evident after Ashley Barnes appeared to have won the game for his team after 67 minutes.

Aaron Lennon’s left-wing cross was met by Johan Berg Gudmundsson whose far-post volley drew a spectacular reflex block from goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, the ball sitting up invitingly for Jeff Hendrick who looked certain to head home the rebound.

But McCarthy recovered well and looked poised to block that effort before Barnes’ showed lightning reflexes to react first and head in from point-blank range.

It was an admirable piece of finishing, and a rare bright point on an otherwise instantly forgettable Turf Moor afternoon.

England manager Gareth Southgate certainly might have questioned the wisdom of his attendance at Turf Moor during a first half which reflected the two teams’ recent poor runs of form.

Over the last 10 games, no Premier League team has a worse record than Burnley and their five point and zero wins, while Southampton visited Lancashire with just one win from their previous 14 games.

Little wonder, therefore, that neither goal was particularly threatened in a tepid 45 minutes that never looked like threatening Turf Moor’s status as the Premier League ground to have witnessed fewest goals - 19 from the opening 13 league fixtures.

That might have changed had Gudmundsson done better with his header from an early Stephen Ward cross but he steered it well wide of the Southampton goal.

And, after Wesley Hoedt half-cleared a Matt Lowton free-kick, Lennon’s volley presented McCarthy with an easy catch in the Southampton goal.

Having started the afternoon in the relegation places, Southampton at least threatened occasionally on the counter-attack as the first half wore on, primarily through the pace and guile of Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic.

After 12 minutes, Redmond’s through ball presented Tadic with the chance of a shot which appeared to have Nick Pope beaten until defender Ben Mee blocked with an outstretched boot.

The pair combined again, this time Tadic finding Redmond in space, for the visitors’ only other first half sight of goal which saw the Saints attacker test Pope with a left-foot shot from the edge of the area which the Burnley keeper gathered comfortably.

Burnley’s dramatic loss of form since the heady days of summer and autumn when they flirted with the leaders in the top flight, has not been helped by a long injury-list which even extended to manager Dyche this week when he tore a thigh muscle on the team’s warm weather training trip to Portugal.

But they still showed glimpses of the play that has Dyche’s side comfortably positioned in the top 10.

In a late first half attack, Ashley Westwood’s long pass down the right was crossed, first-time by Lowton, and laid off by Ashley Barnes for Lennon who should have done better than strike his effort directly at opponent Oriol Romeu.

The second half offered little initial sign of an improvement in the fixture’s entertainment value although a 55th minute Southampton corner initially looked promising as James Ward-Prowse picked out Redmond whose effort was blocked by Ward.

Burnley responded, with Gudmundsson’s excellent pass offering Jeff Hendrick a half chance only for goalkeeper McCarthy to beat him to the ball with an important intercepting touch.

They retained the momentum when Westwood’s cross hung invitingly and Barnes jumped impressively only to head wide a few minutes later.

The opening goal eventually forced Southampton into a more adventurous approach with substitute Sims bringing a fine save from Pope who dived to touch his strong effort onto the post.

Premier League round-up: Liverpool rout West Ham as forward trio all score, Newcastle let slip two-goal lead

Show/hide article…

Saturday’s Premier League games saw more record-breaking brilliance from Mo Salah, a four-goal thriller at the Vitality Stadium and plenty more action. Here’s our round-up…

Liverpool took their goal tally for the season to 103 as they claimed second place in the Premier League with a comfortable 4-1 win over West Ham.

Mohamed Salah, with his 31st of the season, again got on the scoresheet, while Emre Can, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane also struck.

REACTION - Liverpool fans rave about Mohamed Salah as he matches Luis Suarez haul and sets new Premier League record

West Ham hit the bar through Marko Arnautovic in the early stages, but were outplayed and managed just a consolation through substitute Michail Antonio.

Liverpool, who also won 4-1 at the London Stadium in November, were dominant and could have had more for their efforts, with both Salah and Mane striking the woodwork.

The Hammers, whose supporters wore T-shirts commemorating the 25th anniversary of Bobby Moore’s death, offered little and the result prolonged their manager David Moyes’ miserable record at Anfield.

The former Everton and Manchester United boss has now not won at the ground in 15 attempts.

Glenn Murray scored twice as Brighton gave their survival hopes a shot in the arm and brought Swansea’s revival to a halt.

Murray’s double and goals from Anthony Knockaert and Jurgen Locadia helped secure a 4-1 victory and a valuable three points for the hosts, as the Swans’ 10-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end.

The World Cup may be a pipe dream for 34-year-old Murray, but he now has 10 Premier League goals this season and only three Englishmen - Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Jamie Vardy - have scored more.

With a daunting run-in which sees them face Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool in their final four matches, this was a huge victory for Brighton.

They are now up to 11th, four points clear of 18th place, which is occupied by their beaten opponents Swansea.

Dan Gosling struck a dramatic late equaliser against his former club as Bournemouth battled back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Newcastle.

Midfielder Gosling converted into the roof of the net in the 89th minute after Cherries substitute Adam Smith set up a tense final 10 minutes by halving the deficit.

Magpies striker Dwight Gayle looked to have earned the visitors three precious Premier League points on the south coast with two simple, first-half finishes, but they made to pay for their profligacy, which included Jonjo Shelvey missing an open goal at 2-0.

Victory at the Vitality Stadium would have moved Newcastle level on points with their hosts, but Rafael Benitez’s men will continue to look anxiously over their shoulders at the bottom three following their late capitulation.

Rock-bottom West Brom’s troubles continued as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Premier League relegation rivals Huddersfield, their fifth successive loss in all competitions.

Strikes from Rajiv van La Parra in the 48th minute and Steve Mounie in the 56th put Huddersfield 2-0 up.

Craig Dawson replied with a header in the 64th, but West Brom could not muster anything further as the pressure increased on boss Alan Pardew.

In a contest where Albion fans made their frustration heard in various ways, there were chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” directed at Pardew towards the end, and loud boos rang around The Hawthorns at the final whistle.

The result leaves the Baggies - who have won just one of 14 league games under Pardew - still seven points adrift of the safety, with 10 matches left to play.

Sean Dyche’s Clarets were as high as fourth in December, but their European dreams have diminished thanks to a lengthy run without a Premier League victory.

Ashley Barnes looked to have propelled Burnley to a much-needed victory, only for their winless top flight run to extend to an 11th match as Gabbiadini fired home late on to snatch Saints a draw.

All eyes were on referee Bobby Madley after the goal. His inadvertent block on Burnley’s Ashley Westwood allowed Saints to break, with Gabbiadini smashing home after Guido Carrillo cut the ball back.

Barnes’ close-range header looked to worsen Saints’ plight at Turf Moor, only for the last-gasp leveller to see the visitors sneak a point that had looked beyond them.

Burnley 1 Southampton 1: Manolo Gabbiadini’s last-gasp equaliser extends Sean Dyche’s winless run

Show/hide article…

For Sean Dyche, there was only frustration to add to his physical pain. The Burnley manager braved a torn quad muscle, picked up during a training break in Portugal on Tuesday, to take his place in the technical area. Yet his hopes of seeing a two-month winless streak ended were thwarted at the end.

Ashley Barnes’ header looked to have secured a first victory in 11 Premier League matches, but Dyche’s team could not see the game out. Twenty seconds from the end of regulation time, Manolo Gabbiadini swept his first goal since October to give Southampton a scrap of comfort in their relegation fight.

Mauricio Pellegrino may have won only one of his past 15 Premier League matches, but at least his side have climbed out of the relegation zone for now. “The draw is almost the same as a win today,” he said. It was easy to understand his jubilation; Southampton did not, for the most part, demonstrate the confidence that carried them into the FA Cup quarter-finals by beating West Brom last weekend, and Pellegrino is all too aware that success in knockout football is only worth so much. His predecessor, Claude Puel, led the club to last season’s League Cup final and still lost his job.

Burnley 1-1 Southampton: Manolo Gabbiadini extends Burnley’s winless run to 11 games

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini’s 90th-minute equaliser pulled Southampton out of the relegation zone with a late 1-1 draw at Burnley.

The Italian substitute latched onto Josh Sims’ cross and lashed beyond Nick Pope to give the Saints a draw they just about deserved with his first goal in four months.

Ashley Barnes earlier put the hosts in front with a scrappy finish from Jeff Hendrick’s flick, having kept Southampton at arm’s length for the most part.

But Sims forced Pope into a world-class save as they pressed for a late equaliser before Gabbiadini’s goal, which lifts them to 16th in the table and leaves Burnley 11 games without a Premier League win.

Southampton registered only two touches inside the Clarets box before the break, but created the best chance of the opening period when they did.

Nathan Redmond’s smart reverse pass found Dusan Tadic, who shot first-time but was denied by a combination of Pope and Ben Mee, who both got something on his curler.

At the other end, Johan Gudmundsson and Barnes both headed wide, but a game between two sides lacking in confidence was predictably cagey.

The Saints re-emerged better after a ticking off from Mauricio Pellegrino but still fashioned little, and Burnley took the lead when Gudmundsson’s shot was saved by Pope, and Barnes touched Hendrick’s header in on the line.

But the arrival of Sims turned things around for the visitors, and he used his pace to good effect to pull a stunning save from Pope inside the last 10 minutes.

With moments of normal time remaining, Sims pounced after Bobby Madley inadvertently blocked off Ashley Westwood in midfield, before crossing for Gabbiadini to score for the first time since October 15.

Romeu won a heck of a lot in midfield and kept Burnley at bay when they overloaded the flanks and very rarely beaten on the floor or in the air.

He was unlucky to be withdrawn as Southampton chased a draw late on.

Southampton return to St Mary’s, where they are currently on course for their lowest ever Premier League home points tally, while Burnley host Everton next Saturday.

Burnley 1-1 Southampton - in pictures

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini and Josh Sims rescued a point for Saints, the former with a superb strike to make it 1-1 in the 90th minute and the latter for his impact after coming on for James Ward-Prowse with 20 minutes left.

Ashley Barnes bundled the ball home on 68 minutes to give the Clarets the lead after a completely drab affair up until that point.

After that, Saints finally clicked into gear. Sims was superb. He got wide and got some crosses in, which the visitors had lacked so much before his introduction.

Just as things seemed lost, Redmond played to Sims on the right and the academy man picked out Guido Carrillo at the far post.

The Argentine nodded the ball back into the middle to Gabbiadini, who swiveled 180 degrees and leathered it home to save a point for Mauricio Pellegrino’s men.

Gabbiadini earns Saints a point

Show/hide article…

In a game of few chances, the hosts looked to have edged it, thanks to a scrambled Ashley Barnes effort midway through the second half, but Gabbiadini came off the bench late on to net his first since October and earn Saints what could be a potentially valuable draw.

The result lifts Saints up to 16th, at least for a day, ahead of a huge home game next Saturday, against a Stoke City team who are three places and one point below them.

Pellegrino made one change from the side that won 2-1 in the FA Cup fifth-round at West Brom a week previously, as Oriol Romeu was brought back into the line-up in place of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who dropped to a subs’ bench that also included the fit-again Sofiane Boufal and youngster Josh Sims.

After a relatively quiet opening ten minutes, chances started to appear for both teams, with Aaron Lennon’s snap volley from the edge of the area well held by Alex McCarthy, before Saints carved out an excellent opportunity of their own.

Pouncing on a loose ball 25 yards out, Nathan Redmond played a clever reverse pass to Dušan Tadić, allowing him to drive into the area. The Southampton playmaker, making his 150th appearance for the club, lined up a clever shot with the outside of his left foot, but the back-tracking Ben Mee was able to stick out a leg and stop it finding the bottom corner.

The game then dropped back into a lull, but Redmond, making his first Premier League start since Boxing Day, nearly sparked it into life in the 25th minute, with a fizzing, low strike from distance, which Nick Pope did well to hold in the Burnley goal.

Shortly afterwards, the hosts came close to a breakthrough, as Matthew Lowton chased a ball down the right to the byline and hooked it back into the area for Barnes. He spun and laid it off to Lennon on the edge of the area, but his low shot towards the bottom corner was brilliantly blocked by Romeu.

It was Burnley who continued to look the more threatening through to the break, although they were unable to seriously test McCarthy.

Neither side made any changes at half-time, and the game continued in a similar fashion, with both teams finding it hard to break down the stubborn resistance of the opposition.

McCarthy had to be alert, though, in the 58th minute, smothering at the feet of Jeff Hendrick after a through ball picked out the run of the Burnley player.

He was spared having to make a save a few minutes later, as Barnes rose to meet Ashley Westwood’s superb cross from a deep position on the right and headed wide from just outside the six-yard area.

McCarthy was eventually beaten in the 67th minute, however, as a deep cross from Lennon picked out Johann Gudmundsson at the back post. His first-time volley back across goal was palmed away by McCarthy, only for Hendrick to nod it back goal wards from six yards and Barnes to bundle it over the line.

Pellegrino responded by bringing off James Ward-Prowse and sending on Sims, and he was very nearly rewarded for it in the 74th minute, as the winger cut onto his right foot on the edge of the box and bent a shot towards the top corner, only for Pope to somehow tip it onto the post at full stretch.

Another attacking substitution followed as Boufal was sent on for Romeu seconds later, before Gabbiadini was introduced for Tadić with nine minutes remaining.

It was a change that proved crucial, as Gabbiadini scored his first goal since October to earn Saints a point.

Sims got free down the right and stood up a ball to the back post, which was headed back across the six-yard box by Carrillo. Gabbiadini was quickest to react, taking a sharp touch, before spinning and lashing home with the clock just seconds from 90 minutes.
