Carrillo ready to hit capacity

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has full confidence that record signing Guido Carrillo will hit full capacity soon.

The £19.2m January arrival from Monaco has instantly found himself thrust into the Saints side and leading the line as they battle for Premier League survival.

It’s a big ask for the 26-year-old Argentinian as he tries to break down the language barrier as well as getting used to life in English football.

Though he is still waiting for a first Saints goal, Carrillo has shown improving performances and Pellegrino is encouraged by what he has seen.

“He’s adapting well, working well and now in some movements he has to improve the connections with some teammates,” said the Saints boss.

“It’s not too easy as most games have been away and Liverpool at home but little by little he will improve like the team.

“Every player needs context for good performance individually and he will show his capacity.”

Carrillo’s more physical style has added an extra dimension to Saints and has started to alter their style of play.

They are now able to go more direct to Carrillo and feed off of him, though Pellegrino insists that Saints as a whole are still adapting.

“I think he will give and is giving us something we didn’t have,” reckoned Pellegrino. “Not like Charlie (Austin) but similar profile.

“Maybe Charlie is quicker - in the box different but outside the box he’s a different option and we have to work out what to do when Guido goes deep and when he’s in the box to give him more time.”

After reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals with a win at West Brom last weekend, it’s back to fighting relegation for Saints this afternoon as they travel to Burnley.

“I think it was important for us to move forward but every single game you have to be fully focussed and really well prepared to keep going in a positive way,” reflected Pellegrino.

“Burnley obviously in some aspects are similar but in another pattern they are really strong in a different way.

“It is a difficult team at home, every single game is really tight when you play a team really well organised, a competitive team, good rhythm.

“If we use our last home game as experience we dominate, manage the ball but couldn’t break their defensive system.

“We have to be 100 per cent on the pitch to try to gain something positive from this game.”

Survey reveals Saints are out of the relegation zone (sort of…)

Show/hide article…

TO SOME, Arsenal fans are getting a raw deal considering the amount they spend on a ticket during a difficult season.

But they’re getting value for money compared to Southampton supporters according to new research.

Statistics released by TicketGum.com have identified which Premier League clubs are offering their local fans the most affordable match day experience.

And in this table Saints are out of the relegation zone and up to 12th.

The firm has calculated how long supporters in each of the 20 different towns and cities where the clubs are based would have to work in order to afford a full match day experience, based on the average full-time weekly wage for the area.

A full match day experience includes the lowest price of a ticket coupled with the costs of a programme, cup of tea, pie and most popular piece of merchandise; which was found to be an official adult football shirt.

The research found that local Saints fans had to work for seven hours and five minutes to experience a whole match day at St Mary’s Stadium.

Fans of Crystal Palace are getting the most affordable experience with locals working four hours and 22 minutes to enjoy a home game and despite leading this year’s Premier League, champions-elect Manchester City languish in bottom spot in the table - their fans having to work for more than eight hours to afford a home game.

A spokesperson for TicketGum.com said: “Local supporters embody the spirit and culture of their football clubs.

"Unfortunately, many cannot afford the full cost of a season ticket, so they attend a few home matches instead.

"By considering the average weekly wage for the area in which each team is based, it provides a clearer indication of how affordable match day experiences really are for local supporters in proportion to their income.”

WINTER OLYMPICS: Billy Morgan sends Team GB into record medal territory

Show/hide article…

Four years after hanging a toilet seat around his neck during a memorable apres-ski in Sochi, Billy Morgan will replace it with an Olympic medal after soaring to a shock bronze in the men’s Big Air final in Pyeongchang.

“It’s a bit of an upgrade,” admitted the party-loving Morgan, who nailed a trick he had never performed before in competition - and had crashed in his last four attempts in training on Saturday morning - to muscle in on the podium.

His success earned the 28-year-old former acrobat an unlikely place in history as the man who guaranteed Great Britain their best Winter Olympics with a fifth medal of the Pyeongchang Games.

Morgan had crashed on the first of his three jumps, meaning it was imperative he landed both his next two in an event in which the medals are decided by the cumulative total of their two best scores.

He nailed his problematic big trick - which he described as a “front-side 14 triple with mute and tail-grab, but essentially a triple cork frontside wipe” - to score 85.50 which put him into the third place on 168.00. It was a position which, despite ten athletes still to go, remarkably sustained.

When Canadian Max Parrot fell on his final run, ruling him out of contention, Morgan’s extraordinary achievement was confirmed, sparking wild celebrations amongst his support staff at the foot of the jump.

“I didn’t think I could win a medal,” conceded Morgan. "I had Torgeir (Bergrem) and Max to come and they’re rad riders, they never fall over - and they did.

“I had some good luck on the day but that’s what makes the sport so interesting - you can do a trick 100 times but fall on that day.”

Since Morgan had finished a disappointing 10th in qualifying for the men’s slopestyle on the opening day of the Games, he had taken an unconventional approach to preparations for his second event.

“We had an early night last night,” said GB Snowboard coach Hamish McKnight.

"We spent yesterday out on the coast riding electric motorbikes in the woods. We got into a bit of trouble but I don’t think we damaged anyone.

"Billy proves you don’t have to be a cold-hearted machine to be an Olympic medallist. He parties at the right times - and the wrong times.

“We’ve not had big parties since we’ve been here. Billy tends to pick and choose when to party. The problem is his definition of a party is a bit further than anyone else’s.”

What made Morgan’s success all the more remarkable were the injury issues that had threatened his participation in Pyeongchang.

He had competed in Sochi without an anterior cruciate ligament, and subsequently needed substantial knee reconstruction two years ago.

Morgan’s brash and confident demeaour belies an unexpected nervousness which he says contributes to his need to fill his preparation time with semi-notorious social activities.

“I come from the last generation of snowboarders who can get away with it (partying),” added the former Bellemoor schoolboy, who began snowboarding as a 13 year-old at Southampton Alpine Centre.

"I get scared a lot and I worry about it and it does help to have a couple of drinks and not think about the scary stuff I have to do. I’m 28 years old and I’ve maxed the limit of what my body can be scared about.

“Today I was like, even if I completely wreck myself it doesn’t matter. I’m going to go and do it. Normally, if I’m worried, I’ll just pie it off and go home. But today I was just, I’m going to go out and send it for the boys.”

A former builder, Morgan faced another setback in the summer when his father Eddie suffered a severe aneurysm at his home in Southampton.

“That was a heavy hit,” added Morgan, who was cheered on by friends and family at The View Bar Southampton last night. “He’s a big part of my life. But he’s come a long way and he’s at the pub watching. He’s called Mad Eddie, he’s nuts.”

Of course he is. Pyeongchang is unlikely to have seen anything like it when Morgan and his team embark on their richly-deserved and overdue celebrations.

But for Morgan, there was a minor reminder that bronze medals do come at a cost.

“I can’t send it too hard,” Morgan shrugged. “I’ve got to go and do stuff.”
