Former Saints captain Jose Fonte agrees China deal

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints captain Jose Fonte has agreed a deal to play in the Chinese Super League.

Fonte, 34, joined the club in 2010 and left in January last year to join West Ham United for a fee of around £8 million.

He helped Saints climb from League One into the Premier League in 2012.

Now, the Portugeuse has agreed a move to China to play for Dalian Yifang before this year’s World Cup.

West Ham manager David Moyes said the former captain wanted to move in order to bolster his chances of making the national squad for the tournament in Russia.

The 34-year-old made just eight Premier League appearances for the hammers this campaign.

Carabao Cup final betting odds and Premier League tips

Show/hide article…

The Quadruple is gone - just like that. Quicker than you can say, ‘Oh Christ, here come the Wigan fans,’ Pep Guardiola’s potential haul of silverware was slashed by 25 per cent.

Manchester City still head the betting in the three tournaments they remain in and are no better than 2/5 to lift the Carabao Cup on Sunday.

But Arsene Wenger and Arsenal, 40/17 with Unibet to lift the trophy, will have been cheering City’s FA Cup KO to the League One side at the start of the week.

It certainly rattled the Premier League leaders and Pep Guardiola let the Mr Cool mask slip with his clash with opposite number Paul Cook and rather sarcastic comments post-match when he ‘congratulated’ Wigan on their win.

There was a sense when Liverpool played City last month that the timing was right for Jurgen Klopp’s men to take advantage. City had almost had a midweek wobble as they narrowly beat Bristol City before heading to Anfield and Wenger will be hoping his side can follow Liverpool’s lead. He had a wobble of his own on Thursday night, but we’ll get to that.

The Frenchman’s record against Guardiola’s City reads played four; lost two, drawn one and won one. But that one victory was at Wembley in last season’s FA Cup final before they shocked Chelsea, who went into the game on the back of a seven-game winning run as Premier League champions, in the final.

Wenger’s got a decent strike rate in domestic cup finals with Arsenal – seven wins from 10 – but to add an eighth he’ll require more from his players than they gave in the early exchanges against Ostersunds.

That shouldn’t be too hard as they seemed to start that game half asleep before boos ringing round the Emirates Stadium woke them up.

The 90-minute market on Sunday has City at 8/13, Arsenal 9/2 and the draw at 18/5 while there’s always the 7/1 on offer that a penalty shootout decides the outcome.

Sergio Aguero heads the goalscorer betting and he’s scored in his last four games against Arsenal while Kevin De Bruyne is 11/4 at any time.

The Gunners will look to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but Aaron Ramsey, who should be passed fit after groin trouble, is no stranger to a glamour-game goal and he’s 5/1 to ripple the net. Sky Bet have boosted him from 14/1 to 20/1 for the opener.

Jose Mourinho couldn’t resist a sly dig at City after their Monday night misery, claiming his Manchester United side bowed out with dignity when they lost to a lower-league rival.

Mourinho would be well advised not to get too smug though as he goes head to head with Antonio Conte on Sunday.

They’ve been shooting from the lip at each other for much of the season and while the pistols have been holstered in their war of words of late, the tension is still there and Coral go 6/1 either of them is sent to the stand at Old Trafford.

On the pitch, it’s United 13/10 and Chelsea 13/5 with the draw 23/10 and any score draw 37/10 (that’s the best bet).

Much has been made of Paul Pogba’s problems and cracks appearing in his relationship with the boss but further up the pitch the midfielder’s pal Romelu Lukaku will be under as much scrutiny.

His tally of 21 goals for the season is far from shabby but until he scores against the big boys (he’s had four shots and no goals in six games against the big six) the flat-track bully accusations will hang around.

The former Chelsea man still heads the goalscorer betting (5/1 first, 19/10 anytime) but Alexis Sanchez is a better option at 11/2 and 23/10. For Chelsea, Willian (10/1 and 4/1) and Eden Hazard (7/1 and 13/5) stand out.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Leicester are 3/4 to win the opening game of the weekend against Stoke at the King Power.

They’ve won just two of their last 10 in the league but did see off Sheffield United in the cup last week while Stoke haven’t played since drawing with Brighton on February 10. Leicester to win by one goal is 13/5.

Newcastle and Bournemouth upset the odds last time out, beating Manchester United and losing to Huddersfield respectively, and it’s tempting to back a draw on the south coast.

Matt Ritchie’s winner against United was his first goal of the season and he’s 9/2 (Betfair) to score against his old employers.

Burnley are living off their fine start to the campaign as in the last 10 games no team has taken fewer points than their five. They’re at home to Southampton who are in the bottom three but have lost just once in eight games in all competitions. Saints are 20/11 with Unibet.

David Moyes has never won at Anfield with Everton, Man United or Sunderland and he’s not about to start with West Ham.

Liverpool, who are no better than 1/4, have put four past the Hammers the last twice they’ve played them and it’s 23/10 they hit four or more at Anfield on Saturday.

Liverpool’s city rivals Everton are at Watford and Sam Allardyce desperately needs to shut the door having conceded 11 goals in their last three away games. They’ve won just one of their last 21 on the road. Watford are 11/8 but a half-time draw, full-time home win is 5/1.

Backing Spurs wasn’t the best move last weekend and the 3/4 on offer for them to win at Crystal Palace doesn’t rock our see-saw but the 23/10 they win with both teams scoring could be worth a nibble.

This weekend also sees a crunch clash at the bottom between Brighton and Swansea while basement boys West Brom host Huddersfield.
