Harrison Reed doesn’t want to come back to Saints if he’s going to ‘sit in the stands’

Show/hide article…

HARRISON Reed has revealed that playing for too long for Saints’ under-23s “halted” his career somewhat.

Now the Staplewood academy graduate is tasting regular football with Norwich in the Championship on loan, he doesn’t want to go back to taking a backseat at St Mary’s, where he was a mainstay in the academy teams but was a peripheral figure in the first-team.

“I don’t feel like I want to go back to sitting in the stands, training all week and then on a Saturday not being involved,” he told the Eastern Daily Press.

“That’s not something I want to do and I think if you asked many footballers, they would agree.

“So next season I’ll look to progress again, whether that be here or we’ll see what other opportunities arise.

“Definitely it’s opened my eyes. Being at Southampton and a Premier League club is great. But playing in the under-23s and not really coming up against men maybe halted my career a little bit.

“Some coming to Norwich and playing week in week out, getting the game time I have done has really opened my eyes and I feel like I’ve progressed.”

The 23-year-old moved to Carrow Road for a season-long loan last summer, having made 30 first-team appearances across four seasons at Saints.

The Worthing-born man played mainly in domestic cup games for Saints and was always considered one for the future but never made that breakthrough.

Reed signed a long-term contract at St Mary’s in December 2016, extending his stay on the south coast until 2021.

However, after going out on loan for the first time, Reed’s perspective has changed and will be considering his options.

“I haven’t really sat down and thought about my future but there will come a time in the season where I will sit down with my agent, my family, and see what opportunities arise,” he said.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here. From the first day I walked through the door the boys have been brilliant and I’ve really enjoyed being in the city.

“Coming away this season, playing regular football and when it comes to 3pm Saturday being in the starting XI and walking out in front of a packed crowd, that’s something I want to continue."

Boufal and Lemina among Europe’s top dribblers

Show/hide article…

SAINTS pair Sofiane Boufal and Mario Lemina are in the top ten of Europe’s dribblers, according to CIES Football Observatory.

The research group have compiled, using OptaPro data, a dribbling index to analyse statistics from the continent’s big-5 leagues.

Boufal is placed in eighth in the rankings, trying 4.6 dribbles per 90 minutes of play with 53 per cent of those successful.

The Moroccan’s St Mary’s team-mate Lemina enters the index in ninth position, recording three dribbles per 90 minutes, of which 79 per cent were successful.

“The dribbling index is calculated by multiplying the average number of dribbles achieved per 90 minutes with the percentage of successful ones,” the football observatory says.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard tops the index with 6.4 dribbles per game and 75 per cent success rate and is followed by PSG’s Neymar (7.3 and 62 per cent), Barcelona’s Lionel Messi (5.5 62 per cent), Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele (3.7 and 74 per cent) and Tottenham’s Mousa Dembele (3 and 88 per cent) to make up the top five.

After that, Atalanta’s Papu Gomez (3.7 and 71 per cent) and West Ham’s Arthur Masuaku (4.3 and 59 per cent) follow before Boufal and Lemina in eighth and ninth.

Lyon’s Nabil Fekir completes the top ten having recorded 3.4 dribbles with a 70 per cent success rate.

Another St Mary’s man, Dusan Tadic, also features on the index, coming in at 63rd with 1.9 attempted dribbles with a 78 per cent success rate.

U23 Report: Blackburn 0-0 Saints

Show/hide article…

Saints came into the game knowing qualification was assured, but that three points were needed to lift themselves above their opponents and claim top spot in Group B.

They came close to achieving that, as they dominated the second half, but neither side could find a way through, with both looking strong ahead of the last 16.

With the game being played in freezing temperatures at Lancashire FA’s County Ground, it was hardly the ideal start, as Joe Grayson went down with an injury in the first seconds of the match, necessitating a lengthy stoppage that ended with the Blackburn defender being taken off on a stretcher and replaced with Isaac Whitehall.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it took a good while for the game to really get going, with neither side able to carve out a decent opportunity in the early stages.

The first major threat arrived in the 19th minute, as Okera Simmonds escaped down the inside-left channel and drove into the area, but Yan Valery tracked back superbly and muscled the Rovers forward off the ball just as he went to shoot.

Saints themselves went close to an opener in the 25th minute, as Blackburn keeper Charlie Albinson spilled an in-swinging Callum Slattery corner, but, as the ball fell goalwards, it was cleared off the line.

Another stoppage followed shortly after, as Valery went down in some pain with what appeared to be an ankle injury following a challenge from Simmonds. After some lengthy treatment, the right-back was able to continue, but only for a short period, as Tom O’Connor came off the bench to replace him.

With ten minutes to half-time, Saints nearly broke the deadlock, as Nathan Tella slid in a beautiful ball from the left wing that picked out the run of Michael Obafemi through the middle, but his first-time shot was turned wide brilliantly by Charlie Albinson in the Rovers goal, who had also saved well at his near post from the Saints forward shortly before.

There was to be an even better stop at the other end, though, as Rovers were awarded a penalty in added time at the end of the half, when Aaron O’Driscoll was judged to have tripped Lewis Mansell in the area.

Captain Lewis Hardcastle stepped up to take it, with Jack Rose springing superbly to his left to get a hand to the low shot and divert it away.

If that wasn’t enough, the Saints keeper produced another impressive stop from Hardcastle five minutes into the second half, tipping over the midfielder’s dipping strike from 20 yards.

At the other end, Siph Mdlalose tested Albinson with a low shot on the turn from 18 yards, moments before he was taken off to be replaced by Tyreke Johnson, as the game neared the hour mark.

Johnson’s impact was quickly felt, as he whipped in an inviting low cross from the left in the 63rd minute, which Tella controlled in the area, but his strike from close range was diverted wide by Albinson.

The Rovers keeper was nearly left red-faced midway through the second half, though, as he misjudged a clearance, hitting it low against Obafemi, before watching as the ball spun just wide of there post.

He followed that aberration with a fine double stop from Tella, though, after Obafemi was able to find his teammate inside the area.

Saints had the hosts well under pressure as the game approached 90 minutes, with O’Connor testing Albinson with a long-range strike, while Will Smallbone shot straight at him from the edge of the area after great work down the left from Johnson, but the visitors could not find a way through, as they had to settle for second place in their group.

The last 16 now awaits, though…

Jaïdi: We could have scored four

Show/hide article…

His young charges put five past Newcastle United in the PL2 last week and arguably created enough chances to do the same against Blackburn here in the PL Cup, only for two fine goalkeeping performances at both of the ends of the field.

Despite the result, which sees Saints qualify for the knockout stages as runners-up in Group B, Jaïdi was happy with the attacking intent he saw from his team.

“It was a frustrating night, but in a good way,” he said. "I think we had the best of it on the pitch, created a lot of chances and we could have scored at least four. Their goalkeeper made too many saves and their defenders too many blocks.

“I said to the boys it’s a positive to come here and impose our game, play our football and create in the final third. They were disappointed not to win it but it’s a lesson to learn for when we move onto the knockout stages.”

For all of the visitors’ promising build-up play, it took a Jack Rose penalty-save to keep them in the game on the stroke of half-time, a moment which ought to have pushed Saints onto victory after the break.

"The momentum was changing in the first half, we began to take control but had Jack to thank for his save at the end of the half.

“It was a game that really could have gone either way but considering the way we played, you could have seen three or four goals from our side and that would have been a perfect night for us.”

With younger members of the squad now stepping into the fold, performances on the up in recent weeks and a PL Cup last 16 tie now to look forward to, Jaïdi and his team are ready to approach “an important period” with optimism.

"I’m looking forward to this period that’s on the way and seeing how the boys will respond.

"I’m satisfied with the younger guys’ performances; Jake Vokins has been playing for us a few times recently and we wanted to give Christoph Klarer a taste of this level and see how he could handle it.

"I think overall they all managed it well and delivered some positive performances. There’s a lot to learn so I hope they can keep working hard on the pitch.

“We said at the start that we wanted to go as far as possible in this competition but the most important thing for us is to keep the momentum now into the PL2.”

Premier League clubs unite with Kick It Out for LGBT History Month

Premier League clubs have united with Kick It Out to promote inclusion in LGBT History Month.

Kick It Out, football’s equality and inclusion organisation, has released a film featuring players from every Premier League club which seeks to promote LGBT+ inclusion in football and emphasise that homophobic, biphobic or transphobic (HBT) discrimination has no place in the game.

The short film features Premier League stars such as Eden Hazard, Vincent Kompany, Juan Mata and Danny Welbeck, as well as Women’s Super League representation from England international Jill Scott.

LGBT+ inclusion remains a central part of Kick It Out’s work and the film encourages supporters to report any abuse they witness or suffer, whether it’s to a steward or to Kick It Out via its free reporting app.

“Kick It Out have been campaigning for LGBT+ inclusion in football for a long time and it’s wonderful that we’ve been able to bring all 20 clubs together for the first time in our history to take a stand against HBT discrimination,” said Roisin Wood, Kick It Out’s chief executive.

"This is about the collective force of the game uniting to eliminate behaviour that has no place in the game.

“We also wanted to send out a positive message to fans across the world and make it clear that LGBT+ supporters are part of the foundations of football just like any other fan.”

Premier League executive director Bill Bush added: "This film produced by Kick It Out features all our member clubs and highlights the need to challenge homophobic, biphobic and transphobic behaviour across the sport.

“The Premier League is embraced across the world and we are proud to show our continued support for LGBT+ inclusion in football.”

Sims is fired up to make big impact

Show/hide article…

JOSH Sims insists he is ready to make a big impact in Saints’ scrap for Premier League survival.

An “awkward and unusual” chipped cartilage injury in the 20-year-old’s left knee, which had to be operated on, came at a bad time, keeping him out of first-team action for nearly nine months after making an eye-catching breakthrough last season.

But, now, after a long rehabilitation period Sims is champing at the bit to impress further in the first-team, having had a telling impact as a substitute in the 1-1 draw at Burnley on Saturday.

“I’ve been out injured for a while so I’m just getting back to full fitness. It’s been hard watching it while I’ve been injured because I feel like I can make an impact,” he said.

“Hopefully I can start to show the manager what I can do when I come off the bench. It’s down to myself really to take the opportunities when I come on.

“It’s been difficult for me. We’re nearly into the end period of the season now and I’ve only just started playing. But that’s obviously down to the injuries.

“This season has been hard for me, but I’ve got to get through it now and look at next season really.

“I need to get ready to start strongly next season, but we’ve got a few games left and hopefully I can make an impact towards the end of the season and keep us up. That’s the main thing.”

The academy graduate played 13 games for the first-team last season, but was ruled out with injury for more than seven months after a freak incident in training.

Sims’ breakthrough campaign included an assist for Charlie Austin’s winner 41 seconds in to the 1-0 victory over Everton at St Mary’s on his debut in November 2016.

He also set-up Shane Long for the winning goal at Anfield in the League Cup final second-leg.

Following a heady period, a frustrated Sims had keyhole surgery on his left knee to rectify the issue and knew he’d have to start from scratch to get back into the first-team picture, especially with a new manager, Mauricio Pellegrino, to impress.

He said: “I chipped my cartilage in training. It was an impact injury. It’s a real awkward and unusual injury, so I had to have keyhole surgery in my knee. It was quite a big operation.

“It was at the front on my left knee, so I had keyhole there. I don’t feel anything now, so it’ all good. All the way through rehab it was always really positive, I didn’t have any setbacks.

“It came at an awkward time for me. I was doing well and played quite a bit of first-team football and did well when I got the opportunity.

“The injury came at a bad time for me but you can’t do anything about injuries, it’s one of those things in football.

“With the change in manager it was always going to be a clean slate for everyone. Of course, it was an awkward one for me and a hard one to take considering where I was at the time.

“But that’s all in the past now and I can look forward to the games coming up.”

Saints are out of the relegation zone on goal difference alone with ten games remaining in the league and are facing a season-defining period.

Pellegrino’s strugglers face second-to-bottom Stoke at home this Saturday, before trips bottom-half rivals Newcastle and West Ham United.

“We’ve got some really important games coming up, so if I can ultimately help the team stay up that’s what I want to do,” Sims said.

“From a personal point of view a lot of my work is looking to next season but, of course, the games now are massive so I’ve just got to do my best if I get the opportunity.”

Sims was introduced soon after Ashley Barnes gave Burnley the lead at Turf Moor on Saturday and he had a instant impact. His high energy and running gave Saints a whole new dimension.

“When you come on, a player like me just has to be positive and just try and make an impact,” Sims said.

“It all comes from myself really. I don’t need anyone to tell me what to do. I know how I can change a game, so I’ve just got to do my best when I come on.

“When you come off the bench you’ve just got to do your best and try and make an impact.

“I think I did that, so I was happy with my performance. At the end of the day, the points are what matter and we’re lucky we got the goal at the end to get the point.”

While next season is very much on Sims’ mind, he is motivated for the battle ahead, so that he is able to play top-flight football next term.

He said: “Of course, the situation we’re in, it’s a strange one. I don’t think we deserve to be down here.

“It’s a difficult one and I do think we’re too good to be down here. We can’t do anything about it now and the games coming up we’ve got to make sure we do well and win.

“Everyone would rather be playing Premier League and it suits my game especially to be playing in the Premier League.

“It means a lot to me. I’ve been here along time now. I’ve come up through the academy and it’s not very nice seeing the club in position it’s in.

“But if everyone pulls together, I have no doubt we’ll stay up.”
