Mata and Hazard among Premier League stars in new Kick It Out advert

Show/hide article…

Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck claims every Premier League player has heard homophobic, biphobic and transphobic abuse from the stands in their career.

The Englishman is one of a number of Premier League stars recruited by Kick It Out for their new advert, with 24 players from a mixture of all 20 clubs reading out a poignant message on camera.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Manchester United’s Juan Mata are among the big names, with the charity breaking new ground in their fight against discrimination in football.

One of the stronger statements in the minute-long advert comes from Welbeck, who states: ‘We’ve all heard it’, while Hazard adds: ‘Abusive chanting is not okay and can affect anyone.’

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany and Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen are also involved, while Palace’s Scott Dann says: ‘Sometimes things can get out of hand.’

Following the release of their advert, Kick It Out said: ‘LGBT+ inclusion remains a central part of Kick It Out’s work and the film encourages supporters to report any abuse they witness or suffer – whether it’s to a steward or to Kick It Out via its free reporting app.’

The latest campaign is the first time a group of Premier League players have spoken so openly for the LGBT+ cause, and Kick It Out speak of their pride at being able to bring every top-flight club together.

CEO Roisin Wood said: 'Kick It Out have been campaigning for LGBT+ inclusion in football for a long time and it’s wonderful that we’ve been able to bring all 20 clubs together for the first time in our history to take a stand against HBT discrimination.

'This is about the collective force of the game uniting to eliminate behaviour that has no place in the game.

‘We also wanted to send out a positive message to fans across the world and make it clear that LGBT+ supporters are part of the foundations of football – just like any other fan.’

Previously players have worn rainbow laces to support the cause, with clubs also including rainbow branding to corner flags, handshake boards and captain’s armbands.

Rose the hero as Saints draw with Blackburn

Show/hide article…

Southampton goalkeeper Jack Rose saved a first-half penalty as his side claimed a goalless draw against Blackburn Rovers in their final Premier League Cup Group B match at Leyland County Ground.

Rovers had the best chance to win an entertaining encounter when they were awarded a penalty just before half-time for a foul on Lewis Mansell.

But Rose dived to his left to push away captain Lewis Hardcastle’s shot.

The teams were playing for top spot in the group having both already qualified and the draw means Rovers win it with 11 points, one ahead of Saints.

Cardiff City and Watford, whose match at Wealdstone was postponed, were the non-qualifiers from the group.

How the Premier League table would look if games finished at half-time

Show/hide article…

Tottenham Hotspur beat Crystal Palace thanks to Harry Kane’s winner in the 88th minute – an extreme example of how their slow starts have stifled them at points this season.

In fact, it took until the fourth game of the Premier League campaign for Spurs to score a goal in the first half of a match, although they will also be remembered for Christian Eriksen’s goal after 11 seconds against Manchester United.

So would they have any chance of finishing in the top four if matches ended after 45 minutes?

Here at talkSPORT we’ve dug deep and done the mathematics to discover how the Premier League table would look if the final whistle was blown at half-time.

Mirror Football writers offer North and South XIs for All-Star match

Show/hide article…

In America, the All-Star game is a major deal.

The NFL, NBA and NHL all host exhibition matches for their respective sports, with the top players from around each league gathering for a one-off showpiece event.

Major League Soccer also hosts a mid-season game, where fans vote for the stars they want to see on the pitch; in recent years an MLS XI has faced off against the likes of Arsenal, Spurs, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Now Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has called for the Premier League to follow in the footsteps of America’s major sporting leagues with its own All-Star game, pitting the North against the South.

It’s an intriguing idea certainly, and one which got the collective heads at Mirror Football pondering who they would include in their respective squads, should such a game come to fruition.

No arguing about what constitutes north and south. We had our official Mirror Football geographers* pore over the map and lay down a definitive marker for a 10:10 split. Here’s what they came up with:

Thus, without further ado, introducing the teams…

*they may not be official and are in fact completely made up

Tough choices but went for De Gea’s agility over sweeper-keeper Ederson. Would have preferred to have Pogba on the left of a three in midfield but would have had to play one of the forward players too deep.

Mane over David Silva was tough but the Liverpool man just edged it. And while hard-working Roberto Firmino has an outstanding understanding with Salah, Aguero’s record is second to none.

In the dugout, there’s no doubt Mourinho would win things - but Pep would win them with style.

It was a tight one as to whether I’d have Christensen or Sanchez in for Vertonghen as either would thrive alongside Alderweireld. I went for Azpilicueta at right-back ahead of Trippier’s superb crossing abilities as I think Azpi is more defensively solid. But, again, it was a close one.

I also toyed with Zaha ahead of Willian but Willian has more big match experience.

Pochettino would bring the fire, the organisation and the belief that this side could stand up and be counted against anything that the north would have to offer.

The Big Three of the North dominate because the Big Three are miles ahead of anyone else in the region (ditto in the South). I’ve gone completely rogue by naming Ederson ahead of De Gea but we are playing Pep-style and the Brazilian is bizarrely good with his feet. I’ve also worked on a no-injury basis, so Mendy makes it at left-back.

Am giving the manager’s gig to Sean Dyche. After getting what he’s got out of the limitations of Burnley, he would deserve a day out managing a collection of blue riband players.

Quite frankly, it is hard to see the southerners having much of a chance, mainly because of a chronic lack of serious goal threat. There is Harry Kane and that’s it.

With Kante and Demeble twinned in midfield, they would at least be combative and they look very solid defensively.

Considering eight Spurs players get the nod, Pochettino as manager was a no-brainer.

Spoilt for choice here, particularly up top where Alexis Sanchez - as brilliant as I think he is - doesn’t even make my bench; his team-mate Lukaku (for his physical presence) just edges it.

Why Chris Hughton and not, who many would consider, the obvious choice Mauricio Pochettino? I think he is the most underrated manager in the Premier League. He has done a magnificent job at Brighton and survival should be a certainty.

Again, spoilt for choice here - particularly in midfield. I am a huge Jack Wilshere fan so he gets in the team ahead of Tottenham’s exceptional Mousa Dembele… although based on Hughton as boss I have picked Fabian Gross. He’s been excellent.

Vincent Kompany’s ability to produce the goods when needed, even after a long spell out injured, has got him the nod at the centre back.

I’d have to back him to do the same again for a big North v South game. Andrew Robertson’s recent form in solving Liverpool’s left-back problem also gets him in.

Jack Butland and Riyad Mahrez are a couple of the north’s other impressive performers and get spots on the bench. Wanted to pick Ben Mee too but the Burnley man misses out so I could squeeze David Silva onto the bench.

Pep Guardiola will lead this team because he is the best manager in the league. It would also be great to see if he could get the best out of Paul Pogba.

The South’s starting team has a heavy Tottenham and Chelsea influence, bar Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and Wilfried Zaha. Crystal Palace’s Zaha is one of the most talented players outside the top six so gets in down the left side alongside Ozil who I’m picking on the basis of players being on top form.

Again, a couple of unsung heroes on the bench in Alfie Mawson and Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dele Alli’s potential place is taken by his Spurs teammate Christian Eriksen.

The Antonio Conte of last season will organise, inspire and fire up this team to take on their rivals from the North.

Due to the lack of decent left-backs in the north Leroy Sane is going to be a busy boy, sorry. I’ve build this team around a formation, rather than focused on individual brilliance, so it could backfire massively. But if there is one manager capable of making it work then it is Pep Guardiola.

The idea with this team is that when they’re on the attack, Sane moves into a left wing position complimenting the forwards and allowing Mohamed Salah to move out right. Meanwhile in defence Van Dijk shifts left and Kyle Walker drops into a more traditional right-back position. It’s a bit lopsided, but this is a modern world.

Unlike the northern team, this side is build around the players. It features a Tottenham core - and bench for that matter - but in my opinion is structurally sound.

Harry Kane should get plenty of service from the likes of Mesut Ozil and Cristian Eriksen, while Eden Hazard chips in with goals and N’Golo Kante mops up.

As for the defence, I’d say it’s pretty impenetrable.

The Southerners would have to go some to beat this Northern line-up of pace, power, skill and goals.

And with Guardiola pulling the strings from the bench – unbeatable.

Not many tough calls to make to get to this starting line-up.

Spurs and Chelsea dominate the selections and no-one from Arsenal just sums up their current state.

There’s a paucity of outstanding left-backs in the north right now - Andrew Robertson may just be the best - thus I’ve elected to go with a back three, of Bailly, Stones and Van Dijk.

Kyle Walker is the right wing-back while Leroy Sane is on the left; the German has played this role on occasion this season and provided the team dominates the ball, it’s not a problem (plus there’s Fernandinho there to cover.

Aguero leads the attack and Mo Salah simply had to be shoehorned in for his pace, movement and goalscoring. Ashley Young makes the bench for his versatility.

Hugo Lloris gets the nod in goal and Marcos Alonso is beats out both Danny Rose and Ryan Bertrand to the left-back spot.

There’s a heavy Belgian influence, with four of the starting XI coming from England’s World Cup opponents. N’Golo Kante and Mousa Dembele are fearsome in midfield and the side shouldn’t lack for creativity with Christian Eriksen, Mesut Ozil and Eden Hazard supporting Harry Kane.

It would be tempting to name 11 Manchester City players, given they are romping to the title in record-breaking fashion and are having the best campaign in their history, but their North West rivals deserve a mention too.

There was a time such a line-up would be crammed full of Arsenal players, but it is hard to make a case for any of them, given their decline. Chelsea and Tottenham make my 11 and they are light years ahead of the other southern teams.

The northern teams aren’t blessed with the defensive wealth of the south, but a fully fit Eric Bailly is one of the best centre-backs in the league, and the world’s most expensive defender in Virgil van Dijk isn’t bad either.

Guardiola takes the managerial reins over Mourinho as the purpose of this is meant to be fun, and the latter has a habit of sucking all enjoyment possible out of these big games.

Since it’s fairly Tottenham and Chelsea heavy, I’ve gone three at the back as it’s a system which has led to both shining in recent years.

The manager was an easy one. Largely because Antonio Conte is probably heading back to Italy in the summer, and, well, I’m not going to pick Wenger, am I?

The major problem for the north is the lack of quality left-backs. Benjamin Mendy would probably get the nod if he was fit, but it’s an open playing field otherwise.

It’s a heavy Manchester City midfield, but it’s impossible to leave out any of the three men in there. Sorry, Manchester United fans, but individually, no outfield player has done enough individually recently to force their way into the team.

Paul Pogba, on his day, would be looking at getting in. Special note to Johann Berg Gudmundsson of Burnley; he’s had a fine season.

As hard as I tried to make this not a Chelsea and Tottenham combined XI, it still ended up that way. Arsenal have been so poor that it’s hard to justify anyone - and the jury’s still out on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The south have much better defensive options than the north, with Andreas Christensen sneaking in for me, after slowly becoming Chelsea’s most reliable option in the centre.

Harry Kane leads the line in front of Eden Hazard and Willian - and is precisely the sort of striker crucially missing from Chelsea’s current XI.

Kyle Walker and Luke Shaw will give the side width and thrust from wide areas in a side that is built around this year’s outstanding side, City. Mohamed Salah gets in up front, and James Tarkowski makes the bench after impressively replacing Michael Keane at Burnley.

Seven Tottenham players and four from Chelsea make up my South side. A 4-3-1-2 formation will allow me to give Eden Hazard freedom to make things happen alongside Harry Kane, while not restricting Dele Alli.

A heavy Liverpool presence in a team blessed with bags of pace and guile. I couldn’t break up the Mane, Firmino, Salah front trio for their understanding but we did need a leader - so step forward Vincent Kompany.

Klopp can mould this lightning quick, creative unit - and for once he’ll have a decent keeper!

N’Golo Kante personifies this side so he gets the captain’s armband. His hard work and tactical nous, partnered with the strength and no-nonsense Victor Wanyama; nothing will get through the two in midfield will give the front four the platform to play.

In a hard-running team, Pochettino is the ideal man to take control. And with Harry Kane up front, you always have a chance.

Unsurprisingly, the team is dominated with players from high-flying City, United and Liverpool. The North are spoilt for choice in attack but Lukaku’s physical presence gets him the nod through the middle - Sergio Aguero will have to tuck in from wide.

It’s a London XI with Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal making up the starting XI. The front three should keep the North’s back four busy.

If not, then Jermain Defoe is on the bench ready to sniff out a goal.

Rose: “We know we can go far”

Show/hide article…

Radhi Jaïdi’s side had already secured progression, but a share of Monday night’s spoils was only enough to cement second spot, as Blackburn held on to their place afoot of a tightly contested group.

Saints will find out this week who awaits in the knockout phases, but it’s clear that both coaching staff and players have desires on going far in this year’s cup competition.

“We’ve got a great group of lads in the dressing room, and we know we can go far [in the competition],” Rose commented.

"The lads battled really well, we actually could have won the game. Their 'keeper also made some good saves.

"Ultimately my job is to keep the ball out of the net, and I’m thankful I did that last night.

“I’ve had a few [penalties] against me this season, so it was about time I saved one. You get a feeling, and you have to trust it. Thankfully he went the way I did,” the 23-year-old explained, after his first-half penalty stop kept Saints in the game.

He added: “We’ve had feedback from the coaches, who also think we’re capable of going far so we’ll just take every game as it comes!”
