Saint Austin inspires youngster, 9, in school visit

Show/hide article…

HE’S the Saints striker who inspires thousands of children each weekend with his actions on the field.

But Charlie Austin appears to have inspired one young Southampton student with an appearance off the field.

The 28-year-old visited Hightown Primary School as part of the Saints Foundation’s Primary Stars programme.

And according to the striker, the scheme has already had an impact on one student, nine-year-old Kian Rumsey, who has shown a huge improvement in his behavioural skills.

Austin said: “He has benefited very well from it, which is a great example of the impact the work can have on young people.

“It was really interesting to learn more about him and pass on some advice to him that I learned when I was younger about working together as part of a team.

“Kian really does value Lee Nicholas our Foundation worker’s time and when Lee comes in it helps massively, not only with Kian but with the teachers as well.”

The Saints Foundation’s Primary Stars programme aims to increase young people’s enjoyment, participation and skills in local schools.

Delivered across 16 schools, the Saints Foundation’s Primary Stars programme engages with thousands of pupils from 16 core schools across the area.

Each of the core schools has a dedicated member of staff to run the programme.

Hightown Primary’s Primary Stars Coordinator, Lee Nicholas, has seen first-hand the impact the programme has had on pupils like Kian.

He said: “The impact we’ve been able to have on PE, and with children in the classroom, has been really great.

“At the beginning Kian was quite frustrated, but he’s a lot calmer now and he can see the bigger picture.

“It’s hugely rewarding to see and experience the impact our time and this programme can have on young people – that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”

Austin’s visit was part of Saints Together week, which aims to document some of the inspirational stories from the programmes Saints Foundation run in the community.

Saints Together week will conclude on Saturday when Stoke City visit St Mary’s.

Ref Watch: Dermot Gallagher’s verdict on whether Vincent Kompany’s goal was offside

Show/hide article…

Was Manchester City’s second goal in their win against Arsenal at Wembley offside? Should Alvaro Morata’s late effort in Chelsea’s crucial clash at Manchester United have stood? Dermot Gallagher has his say in this week’s Ref Watch.

There were a number of hotly-disputed decisions in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup final over the weekend.

So whether it is penalties not given, offsides, possible fouls, simulation or foul throws, Dermot was on hand to give us his verdict…

Incident: The VAR was used for Manchester City’s second goal scored by Kompany. It was ruled that Leroy Sane was in an offside position, but he was not affecting David Ospina in Arsenal’s goal.

Dermot says: It was a goal because the ball deflected off Kompany and Ospina is diving towards his right. Kompany diverts the ball towards the left, and Sane is nowhere near him [Ospina] and has no impact whatsoever on him. The deflection off Kompany takes it the other way, Sane does not play the ball, so he does not get involved in play and he clearly does not interfere with Ospina’s dive because he cannot get back anyhow. It is all about line of vision…

Incident: Shkodran Mustafi believed he was fouled by Sergio Aguero in the build-up to City’s opener at Wembley.

Dermot says: I just thought he [Aguero] was too strong, he had more desire and wanted the ball. He is looking at all kind of things, but for me it is just not a foul.

Incident: Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen goes down with a head injury in the lead-up to Romelu Lukaku’s equaliser at Old Trafford.

Dermot’s verdict: Correct decision, the referee was duty bound to play on.

Dermot says: This proves that football is not an exact science and refereeing certainly is not in so much that if a player is down and the referee thinks he has a head injury, he will stop play. In that incident, the two players’ heads clashed, the ball is knocked away, Christensen went down quickly and then chose to get up quickly. But by the time Martin Atkinson has looked round, he is already getting up and that sells in his [Atkinson’s] mind that he does not have a head injury - he may well have, but in Martin’s eyes, the fact the player has got up would tell him he has not and that is what you have to remember. He then carries on and I would admit, is out of position slightly, which is unfortunate and the game goes on. But I think the referee is duty bound to allow the game go on.

Incident: Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has a late equaliser ruled out for offside.

Dermot says: It was so, so tight, but what I would say is that it is not guaranteed to be a goal because irrespective of whether it was right or wrong, the referee blew before he shot the ball in the net. So it would not have been a goal, that is what you have to remember. Whether it was an incorrect offside decision is up for debate as I can’t tell what part of his body is ahead, whether it is his arm, whether it is his chest… and I think VAR would have had a long time studying this one.

Incident: Spurs forward Dele Alli goes down in the box, but no penalty is given, while the player also escapes a booking.

Dermot says: It is certainly not a penalty because he does not get fouled by the goalkeeper, he goes into the 'keeper. Even before Wayne Hennessey has made contact with Alli, his knees have already crumpled, so it is not a foul. He may well say he is anticipating being hit, but it is certainly not a penalty.

Incident: Serge Aurier managed a hat-trick at Selhurst Park on Sunday, but unfortunately it was of foul throws.

Dermot says: Well, he did at least manage to keep one foot behind the line on the first of those examples!

Rose: Hard work paying off

Show/hide article…

Both sides have already qualified for the last 16 of the competition, but Saints will be looking to earn the win that would see them leapfrog Rovers and win their group.

Jaïdi’s side will certainly head to the north-west with plenty of confidence, having won four of their last five matches, including a 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle last time out.

“I think we’ve been training really well recently,” said Rose. "Radhi’s got the lads going and we’re just training with better intensity and we’ve got that bit of momentum that we’re doing really well with.

“We’ve had a chat together, and we think we can go far in the cup. We’re looking at winning it – that’s the ultimate aim.”

Saints’ recent form has also been helped by strong performances in goal from both Rose and Kingsley Latham, with the former explaining how the pair help keep each other’s standards high.

“We get on really well off the pitch, and it’s good competition in training,” he said. "It’s going really well for us.

“We both give each other pointers, we both know what we need to work on and that’s what we focus on in training.”

Wessex round-up: Lymington rev up for Saints showdown with a win

Show/hide article…

LYMINGTON Town will go into Thursday’s Southampton Senior Cup semi-final against Saints under-23s (at Blackfield & Langley FC, 7.30pm) on the back of a morale-boosting win.

The New Forest outfit edged Horndean 1-0 in Saturday’s top-eight Sydenhams Premier Division clash.

A game of few chances was settled shortly before half-time when Lymington skipper Ross Bottomley turned in Owen Fee’s cross.

The result keeps Lymington seventh, four points clear of the Deans, but Michael Birmingham’s visitors have four games in hand.

Summerhill has largely taken on the role since the departure of Jim Macey earlier in the season but, in the interest of stability, the club committee feel that now is the right time to make it official.

Summerhill said: “I am delighted to name as manager. My focus for the short term will be working day and night to try to achieve staying up in the Premier Division.

“Long term my plans will be dependent on what division we are in next season.

“My main aim will be to get the best of the local talent playing and committing to the club. I want to see the stadium packed with local people watching the best of the local talent perform at the highest level possible.

“I would like to thank the committee for the trust they have showed in me in what has been a difficult season.”

The size of Summerhill’s task became more apparent on Saturday as they were beaten 3-0 on home soil by Team Solent – their 27th defeat of the campaign.

Julian Stahler, Jim Orvis and Hisham Kasimu scored for the Southampton Solent University side whose goalkeeper Bradley Banda had saved a Luke Kendall penalty after Billy Connor had been sent tumbling in the area with the score still 0-0.

It was a welcome change of fortune for 17th-placed Solent after four straight league and cup defeats.

Weather permitting, the Students are due to visit Newport IW tomorrow evening (Tuesday, 7.45pm).

*REIGNING Sydenhams Premier champions Portland United slumped to 12th in the table after a 4-0 home spanking by AFC Portchester.

A brace from Rob Evans and singles from Andy Todd and Nathan Kirby sealed the Islanders’ fate.

Interim boss Gary Bailey said: “It was a bad day at the office and the players know that.

“We all take responsibility for it and move on.

“We have a big game on Tuesday night in the semi-final of the Dorset Senior Cup (away to Shaftesbury) so there is no time to dwell on it.”

*HAMBLE Club saved their best until last away at Hamworthy United on Saturday.

But it was too little too late for the Monks who fell to a 2-1 Sydenhams Premier defeat.

Goals by Darren Watts and Nathan Walker put the Hammers 2-0 in the clear before Hamble sub Sam Wilson hit back late on.

Tomorrow (Tuesday, 7.45pm) Hamble are due to travel to Fawley AFC in the quarter-finals of the Sydenhams League Cup but, with freezing temperatures forecast, the game will be subject to a pitch inspection.

Fawley go into the tie off the back of a 1-0 Sydenhams One derby win over Hythe & Dibden – Ben Murphy’s goal separating the sides.
