Manchester United squad revealed for Premier League trip to Southampton

Show/hide article…

There are no fresh injury concerns for Jose Mourinho to deal with as Manchester United prepare to travel to Southampton this weekend.

Paul Pogba’s hamstring is still causing him problems and he will miss the trip to St Mary’s, while Axel Tuanzebe is out with a back problem.

Luke Shaw is hoping to be involved against his former club having returned from injury as a substitute in the Carabao Cup win against Burton.

David de Gea, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly and Nemanja Matic are set to be involved after being rested for Wednesday’s match.

Mourinho has hailed the competition for places in his squad - especially his midfield.

“Matic and Fellaini are in the best form that I have ever seen them,” he said. "I never saw Matic playing so well. I never saw Fellaini playing so well.

"Carrick is in a team with these two guys, playing absolutely phenomenal.

"For Carrick and for Ander, it’s just patience because their time will arrive.

“They are going to be important players for us, for sure. That’s the team, that’s the squad.”

Long-term absentees Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic remain out with their knee problems sustained at the back end of last season.

Opposition View: Manchester United

Show/hide article…

Mourinho’s Manchester United side will arrive at St Mary’s tomorrow joint-top of the Premier League, having started the season with four wins and a draw from five matches.

United now face a sequence of six games out of seven on the road, and the Portuguese expects a stern test for his players on the South Coast.

“Southampton is the kind of club that are very stable in the way they play and in the way they see football, with the qualities of their players,” he said.

“I think it’s a good team to be a manager of. Honestly, I think it’s a very good club to be manager of. And I see the match tomorrow as a very difficult match.”

Mourinho insists he is not “counting the days” to Paul Pogba’s return from a hamstring injury.

The Frenchman missed last weekend’s 4-0 win over Everton having joined Marcos Rojo on the treatment table at Old Trafford, and the pair definitely won’t be fit to face Southampton.

Former Saint Luke Shaw is available again after making his first appearance of the season as a half-time substitute against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

“I have no idea [when he will be back],” said Mourinho of Pogba. “No idea. But, again, it’s a great opportunity for other players to play and I trust them all.

“So I’m not going to cry or be counting the days until Pogba comes back, not at all. When he comes back, welcome, but until then, I trust my people.”

AFC Wimbledon 0-2 MK Dons: Ryan Seager and Gboly Ariyibi score

Show/hide article…

One of modern football’s rawest grudge matches went the way of Milton Keynes Dons, thanks to two of their loan stars.

Ryan Seager and Gboly Ariyibi, on loan from Southampton and Nottingham Forest respectively, scored the first-half goals to sink AFC Wimbledon at a fractious Kingsmeadow.

Lyle Taylor saw a penalty saved by Lee Nicholls as Wimbledon rallied after half-time, but they slumped to a fourth defeat in six meetings with their bitter rivals.

Over 15 years have now passed and both clubs enjoy equal status in League One, but not one iota of the animosity has been lost.

Wimbledon declined to name their visitors on the front cover of the match programme, with a condensed page of pen pictures the only reference inside.

The MK team and supporters arrived under police escort through a back entrance.

However, they couldn’t escape a boisterous atmosphere inside, with ‘where were you when you were us?’ one of the more printable chants from the Wimbledon fans.

MK managed to quieten the crowd with a seventh-minute goal, Seager finishing first-time from close-range after Osman Sow crossed from the left.

And they doubled their advantage when American midfielder Ariyibi took advantage of some desperate Dons defending to fire home.

Taylor wasted Wimbledon’s lifeline when his penalty was saved after the break.

Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley said: 'We were sucker punched with two goals, they’ve done a job on us.

‘Ultimately you get what you deserve when you don’t take your chances.’

MK boss Robbie Neilson said: ‘It’s a very difficult place to come but we had the better of the play, scored some good goals and were resilient.’
