Jose Mourinho ready to unleash Anthony Martial against Southampton

Show/hide article…

The Old Trafford boss is weighing up unleashing the triple strike threat of Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Martial to go toe-to-toe with rivals Manchester City. United have already scored 16 goals in just five league matches - the same tally as City. But the United boss wants even more with Martial, fresh from a man-of-the-match performance in the midweek Carabao Cup win over Burton, in the frame. Mourinho is now giving serious consideration to revamping his team to face Southampton today. He said: “All of them give me options. All of them are fast one against one. All of them can score more goals than they do.

“They are different but in the globality, they are all very similar. “Rashford and Martial can play together. “How many times has that happened? I think a few times last season especially. “It’s hard for Martial, but it’s hard for many others. So many players are in good moments, playing well. “It’s hard for all of them. When I see the match last Wednesday, the attacking players - Martial, Rashford, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard - which one deserves to be on the bench tomorrow? “No-one. Nobody deserves to be on the bench. But they are four, plus Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan is six. I cannot play with the six.”

Martial has long seemed like the odd man out under Mourinho, with the Frenchman struggling for form last season. But his willingness to graft this time around has earned him more game time and his four goals already are half of his entire output for last season. Mourinho said: “He’s improving a lot. Not just on his will, his desire to do it, but being effective in that defensive work. Very good. “I see a great improvement in the person, in the mood, in the face, in the body language. “If you just want one word - ‘happiness.’ He’s a happy guy, he’s working extremely well.”

One player who won’t feature against his former club today is United left-back Luke Shaw, who came through a rare start in midweek but still has a long way to go before he hits full fitness. Mourinho added: “He has to work. Just that. You saw the game. You saw the same as I see. “Are you asking if he plays tomorrow? No, he isn’t. He has to work. He has to improve. “Look, he doesn’t play for six months. I’m not expecting him to arrive on Wednesday and be man of the match or to be running up and down for 45 minutes. “It’s a process. He doesn’t play for a long time. You have other players in the Premier League who are not starting matches and their managers just say they’re not in the best conditions. “Luke had surgery and a long time without playing. I cannot expect him to be back and strong, strong, strong in his work.”

Mourinho makes amazing claim about his Manchester United attacking options

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho claims he is spoilt for choice with his current attacking options at Manchester United .

Boss Mourinho says none of his forward players deserves to be left out of Saturday’s side to face Southampton, after United’s explosive start to the new season.

Anthony Martial pushed his claim for a regular starting place with a Man Of The Match display in Wednesday’s 4-1 Carabao Cup win over Championship visitors Burton.

The Frenchman is now set for only his second Premier League start this term, with Mourinho admitting the form of his frontmen – Marcus Rashford scored twice against Burton with £75m summer buy Romelu Lukaku rested – is giving him a selection headache.

“It’s hard for Anthony — but it’s hard for many others,” he said. “So many players are in good moments, playing well, so it’s hard for all of them.

“When I see the match last Wednesday, the attacking players - Martial, Rashford, Mata, Lingard - which one deserves to be on the bench against Southampton? No-one. Nobody deserves to be on the bench.

"But they are four, plus Lukaku and Mkhitaryan is six. I cannot play with the six.”

Martial scored 17 goals in his first United season following his £36million move from Monaco, but regressed last term, managing to net just eight.

Issues in his private life seemed to affect his form, and Mourinho claims the striker’s performance is down to a better attitude and happier outlook.

“I see a great improvement in the person, in the mood, in the face, in the body language,” said the manager. “If you want just a word — in the happiness.

“[If] He starts matches, he tries to do well. [If] He goes from the bench, even if it is for 10 minutes like in the last match at home, he tries to enjoy and tries to give something in these extra minutes.

“I’m very pleased with his attitude overall and then it’s easier to play well. He’s improving a lot. Not just on his will, his desire to do it, but being effective on that.”

Six of United’s next seven games are away, starting at St Mary’s, but Mourinho is not bothered at a prolonged spell on the road at this stage of the season.

“It’s very difficult, but it means it’s going to be easier later,” he said.

“If we play now CSKA in Moscow and Benfica in Lisbon [in Champions League group games], it means later we’re going to play them at Old Trafford.

“If we have consecutive matches at Liverpool and Huddersfield, it means later we’re going to play them at Old Trafford. So I’m never too worried about matches at home and away, because the number of matches is going to be the same.”

Star midfielder Paul Pogba remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, and Mourinho is non-committal about his return.

“No idea,” he said, of when the Frenchman will be fit again.

“But it’s a great opportunity for other players to play and I trust them all, so I’m not going to cry or count the days for Paul to be back.”

Ryan Bertrand admits he didn’t feel like a footballer while playing for Chelsea

Ryan Bertrand admits he has bad memories of his time at Chelsea

The Southampton left-back left the Blues back in 2015.

Since then he has become a regular first-team player on the South Coast and forged his way into the England setup.

Manchester City and his former side have considered a move for his services in recent transfer windows.

But the defender admits his time in West London is tainted with unhappy memories.

“When I was there, whenever I did get the chance to play I never felt the full support to relax and enjoy my football,” admitted Bertrand, speaking to the Daily Mail while at the launch of EA SPORTS FIFA 18.

Mauricio Pellegrino: Southampton will attack Man Utd, it’s the best form of defence

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is ready to go on the offensive against Man Utd

United have banged in 23 goals in their first seven outings of the season while the in-form Belgian Lukaku has already notched 11 times for club and country.

It’s in stark contrast to Southampton, who have once again struggled for goals

But Saints boss Pellegrino has drawn up a masterplan and said: “Lukaku is a top player and we will have to defend really well but also attack really well when we are going forward.

“They are really quick with the space and when he is close to the goal he is really dangerous. We have to be really close to our limit to try and have our own chances in the game.

Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand: ‘I didn’t feel like a player at Chelsea’

Show/hide article…

Five minutes into this interview and Ryan Bertrand’s face lights up. Full of pride, he reflects on the night of September 1, 2017.

For the supporters who stormed out of Malta’s National Stadium in Ta’Qali, long before the final whistle, disgusted that England were only winning 1-0, it’s a night they will want to forget.

Not for Bertrand, though. It will be a night he remembers for ever.

So what exactly is it like to score for England? ‘Amazing,’ recalled the Southampton defender. ‘It’s a cliche but it’s every boy’s dream to score for England.’

But there was hardly any time for the left back to absorb the moment. England went on to score two more goals to give the scoreline a more emphatic appearance.

Three days later, he was back on the field helping England secure victory over Slovakia which, barring two calamitous results against Slovenia and Lithuania next month, should book England’s World Cup place in Russia next year.

Such is the life of an England international. On to the next game. Eventually, though, Bertrand had the chance to reflect.

‘When that goal came it was more like relief,’ said the 28-year-old.

‘It was a tight game, we needed a goal and needed to put the game to bed. But I definitely made up for it when I got home to my family.

‘We had a really nice moment when we got home. We sat down, digested it. It was a nice moment. It’s surreal when you look back at your journey because no one journey is the same.

‘People focus on the now and think that any certain player has always been a Premier League footballer.

‘Every footballer has their path and it’s amazing to accomplish such things like scoring for your country, it’s the real pinnacle. Unbelievable.’

This coming from the man who famously won the Champions League with Chelsea on his debut in the competition.

That was in 2012 when Chelsea beat Bayern Munich on penalties in Bayern’s own Allianz Arena. Indeed, his decision to leave Stamford Bridge and to sign for Southampton in 2015 raised some eyebrows.

Why would you leave Chelsea? Bertrand explained it was a decision he had to take for football reasons.

‘I left for myself,’ said Bertrand, speaking at the launch of EA SPORTS FIFA 18.

‘I wanted to feel like a footballer. I didn’t necessarily feel like a footballer at Chelsea. It was emotional in terms of Chelsea being the club I had been at since I was young and taken part in one of their most historic moments. There was the emotional attachment but from a football perspective it was a no-brainer. When I was there, whenever I did get the chance to play I never felt the full support to relax and enjoy my football.

‘The times I did play it was like an audition. And that is never healthy.

‘As a young player coming through you want the club to be stable enough to say, “We trust in you, go out there and play”.

‘You don’t want to make a young player feel on edge. I wanted that consistency — and for people to judge you they need to see you consistently.

‘Southampton has given me a fantastic base in being able to do that and progress.’

Ultimately, Bertrand’s move to the South Coast has been vindicated as he has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most accomplished left backs.

Manchester City and old club Chelsea have both considered a move to sign Bertrand, but Southampton are in no mood to sell at the moment.

And Bertrand can look back at the decision to leave his comfort zone in west London and say it was the right one.

He has started each of England’s previous six matches — that tally is likely to rise to eight during the next international break. Then, of course, there’s the World Cup.

Bertrand, who will face Manchester United at St Mary’s on Saturday, said: ‘The move to Southampton has gone perfectly.

‘I’m not saying I knew it was going to but I was confident in my ability — it’s just that Southampton gave me the opportunity to showcase it. The carrot of the World Cup is massive. You don’t blank it out. You just want to be on that plane. I was part of the Euro 2016 squad. It was disappointing, but I don’t dwell on it.

‘It’s a motivation for us. It was a massive let-down, but looking forward to the World Cup after being part of the last campaign, this team feels ready now. It feels like we are moving forward.’

Pellegrino relishing Mourinho reunion

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is relishing coming up against Jose Mourinho almost 20 years after the pair worked together at Barcelona.

Pellegrino was a centre half under Louis Van Gaal at the Nou Camp while Mourinho was cutting his teeth on a backroom staff that also included Ronald Koeman.

The Saints boss spent a season on loan at Barca in 1998/99 and this afternoon gets the chance to go head-to-head with Mourinho in the dugout as Manchester United visit St Mary’s.

Pellegrino recalled: “When I was a player there (Barcelona) he was working in the staff as a coach, talking about the opponent and working with Van Gaal.

“It was a really nice experience in my life and I met him in this time in my life, but as a coach not as an interpreter or manager and after his life changed completely, and my life was in another way.

“Now football allows me to be face-to-face with him and it will be nice.”

He added: “Obviously Jose in the modern football is one of the references, but I don’t know how he is in the dressing room because I was never part of a team with him, but everybody knows how Mourinho’s team are on the pitch.

“Every single day for me is a nice challenge. My challenge is to be better every single day and offer to my players the best product in a training session and find ways to inspire them to be better players inside and outside the pitch because human beings play football.

“The result in our life is everything. We need results all the time.

“Playing against Manchester United is one of the most beautiful things. The biggest team in the world.”

For all the talk of the two managers, Pellegrino insists the focus should remain on the players.

“Always I think we are a team and always I try to adapt to my players and my players talk on the pitch for Southampton, not just Pellegrino,” he said.

“It’s not a game between the managers, it’s a game between two teams.

“We have got our possibility and I am confident we can put them under pressure and we will fight for this.”

Pellegrino has United down as sure fire title contenders and admits his team are in for a stern examination this afternoon.

“Yes sure, because they work as a team, they have players with quality and in one second they can change the game,” he reflected.

“They are really strong and they showed last season winning two titles and after five games it’s too early to draw some conclusions but they are showing their quality.”
