Southampton vs Manchester United preview: Latest team news and likely line-up

Show/hide article…

Manchester United travel to Southampton trying to extend their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

The match is on Saturday afternoon.

The action at St Mary’s gets under way at 3pm.

The game is not available to watch live on television due to the three o’clock blackout, so Southampton and United fans should return here for our live blog that will follow every kick.

Defender Virgil van Dijk could make his first start in eight months against United, following a summer of endless speculation about his future.

The Holland international, who had been unavailable after suffering a serious foot injury in January and then handing in a transfer request, made his first-team return as a substitute against Crystal Palace last weekend.

Defender Matt Targett is a doubt with an ankle problem but Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who missed the game against Palace due to the birth of his daughter, is back in contention.

Southampton v Man Utd preview: Virgil van Dijk set to start against Jose Mourinho’s side

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk could make his first start in eight months when Southampton host Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Netherlands international, who had been unavailable after suffering a serious foot injury in January and then handing in a transfer request during the summer, made his first-team return as a substitute against Crystal Palace last weekend.

But Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino is considering thrusting Van Dijk into his starting line-up in an attempt to shackle a Manchester United side that has scored 16 goals in five league games - and one he has described as the “biggest in the world”.

“When we play against the biggest team in the world, it allows us to draw some conclusions about how we are. This is for me the nice challenge and we have to strive for this,” Pellegrino said.

“Playing against Manchester United is one of the most beautiful things. I will live this opportunity, I will live this game, and now we have to try to enjoy this game.”

While Van Dijk could bolster the Saints’ defence, Matt Targett is a doubt with an ankle problem.

But Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who missed the game against Palace due to the birth of

his daughter, is back in contention.

Jose Mourinho has no fresh injury concerns as his side look to keep pace with rivals Manchester City at the top of the table.

Marcos Rojo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic (both knee), Paul Pogba (hamstring) and Axel Tuanzebe (back) remain absent for the trip to St Mary’s but Luke Shaw is hoping to be involved against his former club having returned from injury as a substitute in the Carabao Cup win against Burton.

David de Gea, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly and Nemanja Matic are set to be involved after being rested for Wednesday’s 4-1 victory.

Southampton have lost 24 Premier League games against Manchester United (W7 D5); four more defeats than they have suffered against any other opponent.

Manchester United have won 14 of a possible 18 points in their last six Premier League visits to St Mary’s Stadium (W4 D2 L0).

Southampton have failed to score in eight of their last 10 Premier League matches at St Mary’s Stadium.

Southampton have lost 10 Premier League games in 2017 so far - if they lose this match, they’ll have already equalled their tally of Premier League losses in 2016 (11) with 15 more games scheduled to play following this fixture this calendar year.

Manchester United have scored more Premier League goals in the 80th minute or later in games (9) than 17 of the 19 other clubs have scored overall in the competition this season.

Eight different players have found the net in the Premier League for Manchester United in their opening five games this season; more than any other side. At this stage last season, they only had four different goalscorers.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku have combined for three goals in the Premier League this season (providing assists for goals) - no other partnership has been as profitable in 2017-18 so far.

Romelu Lukaku has scored five goals in his first five Premier League games for Manchester United. The player with the most goals after six PL apps for the Red Devils is Louis Saha (six).

12 of Romelu Lukaku’s last 22 Premier League goals have been scored in the 80th minute or later (55%).

Lukaku has scored more Premier League goals this season (5) than opponents Southampton (4), despite attempting 47 shots fewer (24 v 71).

Southampton produced a big performance at Crystal Palace. They are a funny team, winning that came quite easily after flopping at home to Watford.

Their problem is obviously the lack of goals and that will be an issue against a quality team like Manchester United.

I’ve not completely bought into the United hype just yet - people are raving about them but I thought Everton were bang unlucky for 20 minutes at the start of the second half at Old Trafford.

In the end United produced a flurry of late goals like they did against Swansea and the score looked much better than the game suggested.

This is a big test for United but I think they pass it.

Manchester United are odds-on at 3/4 with Sky Bet to secure the win, with Southampton considered 19/5 outsiders while the draw is priced at 13/5. Jose Mourinho’s men head to St Mary’s as 5/2 second favourites for the title while the Saints are 5/1 for a top-six finish. Romelu Lukaku is the clear favourite at 3/1 in an otherwise wide-open first goalscorer market, with Manolo Gabbiadini and Charlie Austin (both 13/2) considered the hosts’ main threats ahead of Shane Long (15/2).

Southampton v Man Utd is included in this weekend’s Super 6 line-up, with £250,000 up for grabs again. Enter your predictions for free here.

Manchester United team news: Predicted line-up for Premier League match against Southampton

Show/hide article…

Manchester United have dropped only two points in the league this season, with Jose Mourinho seeming to have sparked new life into his players over the summer.

There was concern over how the Red Devils would cope without the injured Paul Pogba, but Marouane Fellaini took his place in the league game against Everton, and helped the team to a resounding 4-0 win.

So can we expect a similar XI to face the Saints this weekend?

Everything you need to know for Southampton vs Manchester United

Show/hide article…

Manchester United travel to Southampton on Saturday with their sights set on all three points as they bid to build upon last weekend’s 4-0 rout of Everton.

Marcos Rojo and Paul Pogba remain sidelined with injury though Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial will have given manager Jose Mourinho food for thought after their midweek performances against Burton.

Virgil van Dijk is in contention to start for Southampton having returned to action as a substitute last weekend at Palace.

The game kicks off at 3.00pm on Saturday 23 September at St Mary’s.

The game isn’t being broadcast on live TV.

Virgil van Dijk. After a summer of speculation linking the Dutchman with a move away from Southampton, it’s now back to reality for Virgil van Dijk. He made his return to competitive league football last weekend as a substitute but looks set to make his first start on Saturday since January. Having been absent with injury for such a long period, it’ll be interesting to see if Van Dijk is still the same defender who first caught the eye of Liverpool and Co this summer. He’ll be out to prove that this is very much the case.

Marcus Rashford. The youngster was a delight to watch against Burton Albion in United’s midweek win over the Championship side. Intelligent, confident and purposeful, Rashford was the side’s standout player alongside Anthony Martial. Whether he starts or comes off the bench against Southampton, the forward will be the man to watch if his recent form is anything to go by.

Saints go in search of back-to-back wins in the Premier League as joint leaders Manchester United come to town…

TEAM NEWS

Mauricio Pellegrino has just one new injury concerns ahead of Saturday’s encounter and will make a late decision on whether Virgil van Dijk will be in contention. Matt Targett is set to miss out with an ankle problem while Charlie Austin’s involvement is also doubtful.

Former Saints full-back Luke Shaw may feature in the United squad after getting 45 minutes of action against Burton in the Carabao Cup on his return from injury on Tuesday night while the likes of Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo all remain sidelined.

Marcus Rashford was withdrawn with what appeared to be a slight knock against Burton Albion in midweek. Goalkeeper David de Gea was rested for that game and will surely be in line to regain his place at St.Mary’s.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

An assured showing at Selhurst Park earned Saints a comfortable 1-0 win over Crystal Palace last weekend, and will look to repeat the trick and register back-to-back victories for the first time when Manchester United come to town on Saturday afternoon.

In what will be the team’s last home fixture until the middle of October, success for the men in red and white at St.Mary’s could lift them to as high as third in the table.

United meanwhile head to the south coast looking to maintain a near-perfect record in the Premier League so far; the Red Devils have a share of the summit with Manchester City, after collecting 13 points from their opening five fixtures.

Jose Mourinho’s Reds are in fine fettle. A 4-0 thrashing of Everton last weekend was quickly followed by a safe passage into the Carabao Cup last 16 at the expense of Burton with Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford (2) on the scoresheet in another four-goal show.

Southampton’s hereto solid rearguard will need to be at their very best to keep out a forward line that has scored more goals in the last 10 minutes of matches this term (9) than 17 Premier League sides have managed overall.

FORM GUIDE

Southampton’s previous five:

Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

Southampton 0-2 Watford

Huddersfield 0-0 Southampton

Southampton 0-2 Wolves

Southampton 3-2 West Ham

Man United’s previous five:

Man Utd 4-0 Everton

Man Utd 3-0 FC Basel (UEFA Champions League)

Stoke 2-2 Man Utd

Man Utd 2-0 Leicester City

Swansea City 0-4 Man Utd

With five goals already this season, Romelu Lukaku has enjoyed a productive start to life at Old Trafford following a lucrative move from Everton in the summer.

The big Belgian currently tops the Premier League scoring charts alongside City’s Sergio Aguero and will look to become the first United player since Louis Saha to find the net six times in his first six appearances for the club.

Concentration from start to finish will be the order of the day for Saints: curiously, 12 of Lukaku’s last 22 league strikes have come from the 80th minute onwards.

Mourinho tribute to ‘very stable’ Saints

Show/hide article…

JOSE Mourinho has paid tribute to Saints ahead of Manchester United’s visit to St Mary’s tomorrow.

He has described Saints as “very stable” and believes his former Barcelona colleague Mauricio Pellegrino is fortunate to be in charge of a “very good club.”

Mourinho said: “Southampton, to be fair, I played them in my second spell in England, I played them and they had Mauricio (Pochettino), and then (Ronald) Koeman, and then (Claude) Puel and now Mauricio - and I don’t see many changes.

“It’s the kind of club where they are very stable in the way they play, the way they think (about) football, the qualities of their players.

“It’s a good team to be a manager (of). Honestly, it’s a very good club to be a manager and I see the match as a very difficult match.”

Meanwhile, Pellegrino insists his Liverpool connections do not serve as an added incentive to beat their bitter rivals Manchester United.

The 45-year-old former central defender made 13 appearances for the Anfield club under Rafael Benitez in 2005 before returning to Merseyside as first-team coach in the summer of 2008.

His Saints side take on United tomorrow, but Pellegrino is focused on gaining a positive result for his current employers rather than settling any old scores.

“This is part of my history as a player and as a first coach with Rafa Benitez in Liverpool,” he said. “For me they (Liverpool and United) are two of the biggest teams in England, in the world.

“But for me my challenge is to try to prepare my team as best as possible to try to win the game.

“I don’t have any relationship with Liverpool.”

Pellegrino was in the twilight of his playing career during his short spell in English football.

He became the first Argentinian to represent Liverpool after arriving on a free transfer from LaLiga side Valencia at the age of 33 in January 2005.

His debut in England’s top-flight came against United and, despite losing at home to a solitary goal from Wayne Rooney, Pellegrino remembers the occasion fondly.

“It was a nice moment in my life, it was my first Premier League game,” added Pellegrino, who was ineligible for the Reds’ successful Champions League campaign that season.

“We lost 1-0 but obviously I remember this game.

“I did my best for this club in this moment but this is part of my past, the present is different.”

Pellegrino pleased with Lemina’s impact

Show/hide article…

Lemina has made an impressive start to his Southampton career, with the 24-year-old turning in a man-of-the-match performance in last weekend’s 1-0 win away at Crystal Palace.

The display won him rave reviews from fans and pundits, and Pellegrino himself this week spoke about the impact the Gabon international has had.

“When we bring in a player it is because we think he can help us to be better, and Mario is a player who is coming from Juventus, playing at a high level, for a top team in the Champions League, and he has got the quality and the capacity to help us,” he said.

"I am happy with him, because he is a humble guy who is always working well and helping the team, and I think he was a profile of player we didn’t have.

“Now we are trying to move him in one position that he will be comfortable and useful for the team.”

Manchester United take private jet to Southampton ahead of Saturday showdown

Show/hide article…

The Manchester United squad has flown to Southampton ahead of their match at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Th Red Devils, currently sitting joint top of the Premier League, will be hoping to make it four straight wins after beating Burton Albion, Everton and Basel in their previous three fixtures.

Jose Mourinho and his players were spotted boarding a private jet at Manchester airport on Friday afternoon before making the short flight south.

Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, has been as impressed by Anthony Martial’s attitude as the Manchester United forward’s upturn in performances.

An outstanding first season was followed by a frustrating second campaign, with the Portuguese making his frustrations with the 21-year-old clear both behind the scenes and in public.

Martial has returned for the new season with a fresh approach and appears to be reaping rewards, continuing his fine form by netting in a man-of-the-match display in Wednesday’s 4-1 Carabao Cup win over Burton.

“I see a great improvement in the person, in the mood, in the face, in the body language - if you want just a word, in the happiness,” Mourinho said of Martial.

"He’s a happy guy, he’s working extremely well. He starts matches, he tries to do well.

"He goes from the bench, even it is for 10 minutes like in the last match at home, he tries to enjoy and tries to give something in these extra minutes.

“I am very pleased with his attitude overall, and then it’s easier to play well.”

Martial and Marcus Rashford, who scored a brace against Burton, are vying for a starting berth in Saturday’s game at Southampton, where Nemanja Matic, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly and David De Gea are set to return having been rested in the cup.

Romelu Lukaku is another set to come in having been an unused substitute in the middle of a week when supporters’ controversial chant about the United striker made ripples.

The Belgium international appealed for fans to move on from the song that references the size of his penis, and Mourinho clammed up when the subject was broached on Friday.

“Don’t ask me these questions,” the United manager said.

“I want the fans to support the football club and to support the players. That’s what I want.”

Mourinho was not much more forthcoming when the severity of Paul Pogba’s hamstring complaint was brought up.

The midfielder this week had more assessments on the injury sustained in the Champions League opener against Basel on September 12.

“No idea, no idea,” Mourinho said.

"But, again, great opportunity for other players to play and I trust them all, so I am not going to cry or to be counting the days for Paul to be back. Not at all.

“When he is back, welcome. But until then, I trust my people.”

Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini are competing to fill the midfield void against Southampton - the team Mourinho beat to win his first major trophy as United manager.

The Portuguese pointed to Louis van Gaal’s FA Cup triumph as being more important than February’s EFL Cup win, but believes things are improving under his tutelage across the field.

“The football team is improving, not just in results but also in a certain style of play,” he said. “Where the connection between the players, the team, the fans looks stronger and stronger; where the Manchester United fans around the world have more reasons to smile than in the recent past.”

Manchester United board their private jet ahead of Southampton tie

Show/hide article…

Manchester United boarded their private jet in preparation for their Premier League fixture against Southampton on Saturday.

Jose Mourinho’s squad travelled to the South coast in style as the rain poured down in Manchester.

United will be confident ahead of the Saints tie, hoping to keep up their unbeaten start to the season.

United travel to the St Mary’s off the back of another impressive performance, this time against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

They are still unbeaten in the league and will look to keep pace with Manchester City at the top of the table.

They face a difficult prospect in Southampton who have been beaten just once in the league so far this season but have struggled to score goals.

Jose Mourinho has no fresh injury concerns but does remain without Marcus Rojo and Paul Pogba, who is still nursing a hamstring problem.

The boss is likely to make changes to the team who beat Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic being rested for the game.

All eyes will be on Lukaku to see if he can continue his impressive goal scoring form since he joined the Old Trafford club.
