Southampton lacked finishing touch vs. Manchester United - Yoshida

Show/hide article…

Maya Yoshida has called on Southampton to show the kind of clinical edge displayed by Romelu Lukaku in Manchester United’s victory at St Mary’s.

A new season and change in management has yet to bring around a change of fortunes for Southampton, with the team struggling for goals and home wins under Claude Puel’s successor Mauricio Pellegrino.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to United means Southampton have already lost 11 top-flight matches in 2017 – as many as they did in the whole of 2016 – and have failed to score in eight of their last nine Premier League matches on home turf.

A meek first-half display was followed by United’s toughest second period of the season, yet Saints were unable to translate pressure into goals.

"Especially in the second half we dominated a lot,’’ defender Yoshida said. "They made a few chances, but, playing against a top team, the small detail makes a big difference.

"It costs a lot. It’s really difficult to accept but that is why they are top of the table. Since the end of the season we couldn’t score enough, that’s the problem I think.

"We have to be more clinical for sure but defensively I think we did much better than last season. So the way we are going is not wrong I think.’’

Lukaku’s first-half effort was the difference for United, with the striker shrugging off Southampton’s defensive attention to get away a header that Fraser Forster could only push back into his path to score.

"Really tough,’’ Yoshida said of facing Belgian Lukaku. "If they put the ball in the penalty box, it is really difficult to stop him. That is why we have to avoid - we were pushing up and trying to take him away.

"Most of the time we could do it. I think one or two times we couldn’t do that and then he scored. That is why he has scored so much – he is really clinical. They had a few chances, maybe two chances and they score.

"That is kind of the difference between Southampton and Manchester United, but if we can play like this against teams in the top, hopefully we can step up against the teams in the middle.’’

While United’s attacking options are on another level, Saints’ defensive depth certainly look impressive.

Yoshida lined up alongside Holland international Wesley Hoedt on Saturday, with Virgil van Dijk on the bench and Jack Stephens, so impressive this year, not even in the squad.

"It’s really tough, I understand,’’ the Japan international said on the battle for a centre-back role.

"Virgil is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

"I have to keep strong in my performance to the manager, the fans, get a result for the team. It’s only the things I can do. I just focus on myself and playing well.

"[With] my experience in the last couple of years, I am pretty sure that kind of pressure makes me stronger.

"Even Jack Stephens was not involved in the squad. That’s the kind of really high competition we have in Southampton.’’

Man Utd duo Matic and Fellaini picked up knocks at Southampton amid Pogba absence - Robson

Show/hide article…

Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini were in the wars for Manchester United at Southampton

That is according to United global ambassador Bryan Robson.

The ex-Red Devils midfielder has suggested Matic and Fellaini both picked up injuries at Southampton yesterday.

United won the Premier League clash 1-0 at St Mary’s thanks to a first-half strike from Romelu Lukaku.

Before Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands late on though, Matic and Fellaini both suffered blows during the contest.

While they managed to play out the 90 minutes, their fitness could be of concern for Mourinho.

Maya Yoshida bemoans Southampton’s inconsistency after United defeat

Show/hide article…

Maya Yoshida has warned Southampton are too inconsistent to catch the Premier League’s big guns.

Southampton have yet to enjoy back-to-back wins this season and they suffered another setback against Manchester United.

Saints defender Yoshida also warned their lack of goals as they have managed just two wins from their last 12 home games and failed to score in nine of them.

Yoshida said: “We have to be more consistent, not sometimes win, sometimes lose. If we continue to play like this we can have more chances.

“There is nothing much different between the top teams - If we want to step up more we have to be better, more consistent. I believe we can do it.

“Especially second half we dominated a lot. They made a few chances – but, playing against a top team, the small detail makes a big difference. It can cost a lot. It’s really difficult to accept but that is why they are top of the table.

Virgil van Dijk return heightens Southampton defensive battle for Maya Yoshida

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk’s return to the Southampton squad is making it even tougher to earn a starting place, says Maya Yoshida.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino brought Van Dijk on for the final 10 minutes of their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace last week, and he was an unused substitute in the defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.

Van Dijk has not started a Southampton game for eight months following a long-term ankle injury and submitting a transfer request this summer, but Pellegrino had indicated the 25-year-old was ready to return to face United.

Yoshida lined up alongside Holland international Wesley Hoedt in central defence for Southampton on Saturday, though, as the pair also kept Jack Stephens out of the side, but the Japan international remains wary of competition from the sidelines.

“It’s really tough, I understand,” he said on the battle for a centre-back role. "Virgil is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

"I have to keep strong in my performance to the manager, the fans, get a result for the team. It’s only the things I can do. I just focus on myself and playing well.

"(With) my experience in the last couple of years, I am pretty sure that kind of pressure makes me stronger.

Premier League hotlist: Alvaro Morata, Leroy Sane, Phil Jones, Philippe Coutinho and more

Show/hide article…

Who were the best Premier League players from the weekend games? We take a look at the man-of-the-match performances in our hotlist.

It was another match-winning performance from the Tottenham striker. He added two goals to his tally for the Premier League season (4), and netted his 25th goal in 23 appearances for Spurs in 2017 - only Lionel Messi (34 in 26 apps) has scored more in Europe’s top five leagues.

It was also his sixth and seventh goals against West Ham, with former Spurs striker Teddy Sheringham calling him the “complete player” in his post-match analysis. He could have nabbed his hat-trick after he twice struck the crossbar in the second half, but he will surely be pleased with his haul at the London Stadium nonetheless

Chris Wood came into the game as one of the in-form Premier League strikers but he was expertly contained by Schindler throughout the match.

The tall German centre-half was only beaten on one crucial occasion by his opposite man but Wood was unable to take advantage, and the chance appeared to play on his mind for the remainder of the encounter as Schindler dominated the duel.

Having scored the crucial spot-kick to confirm Huddersfield’s place in the Premier League last May, the club’s one-time record signing has made an impressive start to life in the top flight and was always on hand to make vital interceptions to help his side to a fourth clean sheet of the season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin led the line brilliantly for Everton, putting in another promising display, but it’s Oumar Niasse who grabbed all the headlines.

The striker seemed surplus to requirements in the summer following last season’s loan spell at Hull City but he was named in an Everton squad for the first time since May 11, 2016 in midweek, coming on to score in the 3-0 win over Sunderland in the Carabao Cup.

And against Bournemouth, with Everton starring down the barrel of a fourth straight league defeat for the first time since January, 2015, Koeman turned to the 27-year-old again - and he delivered again.

Latching onto Tom Davies’ pass, Niasse finished emphatically before being in the right place at the right time to cap a dream week with the winner as Everton came from behind to secure all three points.

Raheem Sterling might have scored twice, but it was Sane who played a starring role for City in front of his international head coach Joachim Low.

After breaking the deadlock before half-time with a composed finish, Sane played a perfectly-weighted pass into the middle for Sterling to tap in. Having spurned a good chance to score his second, the Germany international then whipped in a brilliant cross for Aguero to head in.

On this evidence, Sane will be difficult for Pep Guardiola to leave out of his starting XI.

Many thought Victor Lindelof’s summer arrival at Old Trafford would mean we’d see less of Jones this season, but the England man put in a superb shift at St Mary’s to give United a hard-earned three points.

Southampton huffed and puffed throughout an intense second half, but Jones, alongside Eric Bailly, did everything they could to keep the hosts out. He won all 10 of his duels, didn’t concede a single foul, made more clearances than any other United player and registered a passing accuracy of over 90 per cent.

While Lindelof remains on the fringes of the side, there’s no need to rush him in just yet with Jones performing impressively so far this season.

In the week it was confirmed Diego Costa was set to rejoin Atletico Madrid, Morata looked more comfortable than ever in the role as his successor as Chelsea’s main striker after notching his maiden hat-trick for the Blues.

Summer signing Kiko Femenia started at right-back for Watford and impressed in both attack and defence.

The Spaniard made more tackles (5) and interceptions (3) than any other player on the pitch, while his link-up play with Andre Carillo was equally as impressive.

Any fears that Coutinho’s head isn’t fully on the job after a turbulent transfer window were put to bed with this showing.

He revelled in the space just behind Roberto Firmino, producing two world-class moments to give Liverpool a foothold in the game. His cross for Mohamed Salah’s opener was a peach before he stole the show with a stupendous dead-ball effort from 30 yards.

Hemed scored the only goal of the game as Brighton picked up their second win of the season in the Premier League. He put in an industrious display which impressed Sky Sports’ co-commentator at the Amex Stadium, Andy Hinchcliffe

He said: “In the first half he lacked a bit of anticipation when the ball was bouncing around the six-yard box but he was alive when that header came across from Dale Stephens and took his chance really well. His hold-up play has been good, his work-rate is good too. He’s a real team player and he’s had a good afternoon.”

THE VERDICT: Saints show the way ahead

Show/hide article…

Saints were deservedly applauded from the field after their second half showing against Manchester United, but what matters more is whether they can take that same spirit into games against the likes of Stoke, Newcastle and West Brom.

Spirit not just in the sense of togetherness, of purpose, of intensity, of work rate, but also attacking intent and style.

After a first half in which Saints were meek against United, playing admittedly a very good team but giving them too much respect and falling into that trap of ponderous attacks with little width and so much in front of their visitors, they found a new rhythm.

It was one of pressing, of unity of purpose, getting the ball out wide, and trying to get round the outside rather than measured passing and favouring control of the game.

You wouldn’t call it entirely caution to the wind type stuff, but it would be fair to say that at times it strayed into the swashbuckling bracket.

It was exciting, and Saints look so much more likely to do damage playing that way.

But in a way it isn’t as difficult to do that when you are 1-0 down to United at half time.

Frankly, you don’t have much to lose.

Nobody really expects you to win the game and so the pressure is off. The pressure of a missed chance doesn’t sit as heavily on the shoulders. You still don’t score, you lose the game, and can get cheered off if you’ve given it a good go. Were Stoke the opponents that wouldn’t be the case.

You wouldn’t expect Saints to approach every game in the same way, but the second half was much more like it. It should be something of a template for them.

To produce that against their next opponents – Stoke, Newcastle, West Brom, Brighton – is the real test. It is here that the pressure is on, that an odd goal could be crucial, that you don’t want to make a mistake that you fear could cost you.

It is also against these sides that Saints need to profit. If Mauricio Pellegrino is to turn around these goalscoring problems and make the team one capable of fighting for European football, these are the games in which to garner the points.

Because for all of Saints’ admirable play, the unwanted stat still notched up another turn of the scoreboard – now no home goals at St Mary’s in nine of the last ten matches.

Once again they did enough to have expected to have got at least one, but it didn’t come.

In fairness to Pellegrino he was pretty blunt about that, refusing to blame any outside factors and indeed pointing out that if you don’t score then you know what can happen.

United didn’t take long to start to pin Saints back, and eventually the pressure told as they took the lead on 20 minutes.

Ashley Young’s shoulder drops earned him a yard to whip in a left wing cross which found Romelu Lukaku on his own on the edge of the six yard box after he had outmuscled Wesley Hoedt.

It is not an advisable position to leave him in and he made Saints pay, finishing at the second attempt after Fraser Forster had produced an excellent reaction save to prevent his first effort going in.

Marcus Rashford came close to adding another goal with a free kick that went narrowly wide as United cruised through the first half, so comfortable against a Saints threat that was narrow and too slow.

Saints did begin to spark into a bit of life just before half time and took that momentum into the second period. They attacked out wide, stretching United, trying to go outside them, and their illustrious opponents were very troubled.

Oriol Romeu had a hat-trick of chances, putting wide after a corner deflected his way, seeing a good header cleared by Marouane Fellaini retreating back towards the goalline and failing to hit the target after arriving in the box following a sumptuous Saints passing move.

Nathan Redmond, so much brighter in the second half and really showing what he could deliver Saints, twice worked David De Gea as they searched, ultimately in vain, for an equaliser.

United still posed a threat on the break, and Forster had to save with his legs from Lukaku before Ander Herrera missed the chance to seal the win, firing over with time to pick his spot from inside the area.

Mourinho paid Saints the ultimate compliment as he brought on another centre half and changed formation in a bid to try and contain Pellegrino’s men as United just clung on.

In the end they did do enough to get away with the three points.

As much as Saints wanted something tangible from this game, maybe they got something intangible, though potentially more important.

They got a sense of what they are capable of, what they could achieve under Pellegrino. If they could control United like this then why not Stoke, Newcastle and West Brom?

It’s now a case of taking this forward and continuing in this manner.

If they do, things will get much better very quickly.

Romeu reveals how impressed he’s been with Lemina

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu has hailed midfield partner a “great player” and another representation of Saints’ successful recruitment system.

Lemina has had an impressive start to life in the Premier League, turning out another top display in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United after a man-of-the-match performance at Crystal Palace the week before.

The Gabon international, who is Saints’ record signing after joining for £16m from Juventus last month, is notable for his combative style and quality on the ball.

Romeu said: “He’s been very good. He’s a great signing. He’s a very strong player. He helps the team a lot. He’s defensively strong and also can drive forward and create chances.

“It’s very good to have him, so hopefully we can keep helping him and he can get better. Then, together, we can make a stronger team.”

Romeu, who celebrated his 26th birthday on Sunday, has been a revelation since joining from Chelsea for £5m in 2015.

It’s a similar path that many of Saints’ new recruits have taken in recent years, moving from big clubs where they may not have been getting regular game time.

The same can be said for Lemina, 24, who was not considered a first choice at Juve but is fast becoming a popular choice at St Mary’s.

“He’s coming from a big club, we know he’s got strong qualities and he has a good level,” Romeu said.

“That’s what the club are doing and they’re trying to find the right talents and they’re doing well.

“Mario was playing in Italy but I hadn’t seen him play before now. I’m surprised the way he is and he’s a great player.”

Lemina, along with fellow summer signing Wesley Hoedt, the £15m centre-back from Lazio, are starting to settle in to Mauricio Pellegrino’s side this season.

The second-half performance against United was excellent despite Saints not being able to score and Romeu revealed it shows that Pellegrino’s men are beginning to click.

“With the games and weeks I think feelings get better and we start to know each other more,” he said.

“We’ve got new signings like Wesley and Mario who look very good already and I’m sure they’ll get even better so it’s just a matter of keep learning and keep getting better.”

Romelu Lukaku’s goal in the 20th minute was the difference at St Mary’s as United kept the chase up at the top of the Premier League.

Romeu insists Saints can be proud of their efforts in defeat, because of the second half performance.

“In the second half we played the same football we did away at Crystal Palace,” he said.

“It’s just the way, what we say when we’re finished. We can be proud of what we did today because we fought against a great team.

“We know in this league anyone can beat anyone but we did a great job and that’s what we have to take from this.”

The midfielder says Saints must take the display in the second half display to Stoke.

He said: “If we go to Stoke now and lose it will mean nothing. It will mean nothing so taking three points next week is massively important.”

Loan Watch: Seager makes it two from two

Show/hide article…

Seager played 71 minutes of the derby clash and broke the deadlock on just seven minutes when he got a telling touch on Osman Sow’s low cross from the left wing.

Gboly Ariyibi doubled the advantage on 27 minutes when he showed composure after a scramble in the box, before Lee Nicholls saved a second-half Lyle Taylor penalty to allay any lingering fears of a comeback for the hosts.

Elsewhere, Harrison Reed played the duration of Norwich City’s 0-0 draw with Bristol City in the Championship.

Sam Gallagher also featured for loan club Birmingham City, playing 63 minutes of a 1-1 draw as the Blues earned caretaker manager Lee Carsley a precious point against Derby.

Lukas Jutkiewicz was introduced in place of Gallagher at Pride Park, who scored just one minute after being introduced with a glancing header.

But the hosts responded three minutes later when a substitute of their own made an instant impact, as Sam Winnall finished Richard Keogh’s header across the box.

In League Two, Olufela Olomola recovered from an injury to partner Francios Zoko and play 73 minutes of Yeovil Town’s 1-1 draw with Port Vale at Huish Park.

North of the border, Harry Lewis kept a clean sheet as Dundee United were held to a goalless draw against Falkirk in the Scottish Championship. The result leaves the Tangerines in fourth place in the table.

Jordy Clasie was an unused substitute as Club Brugge recorded a crucial 2-1 away victory to maintain their lead in the Belgian top-flight against second-placed Charleroi.

Virgil Van Dijk: Saints will never sell to Liverpool, club think he’ll stay until summer

Show/hide article…

That’s according to The Gambling Times, who claim Southampton are unwilling to do business with the Reds after this year’s summer-long transfer saga.

Van Dijk emerged as the player Jurgen Klopp wanted most to strengthen his backline towards the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

However, the 26-year-old’s prospective move to Merseyside fell by the wayside after Liverpool were accused of tapping him up in June.

Van Dijk has only just returned to first-team action having been forced to train with Southampton’s reserves when he handed in a transfer request.
