Yoshida ready to compete for place after Van Dijk’s return

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton defender Maya Yoshida knows Virgil van Dijk’s return to the squad will make it even more difficult to hold down a place in the starting line-up but says the increased competition can only be good for the Premier League club.

Van Dijk, who has not started for the Saints since suffering an ankle injury in January, was the subject of transfer interest from Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea in the summer but Southampton managed to hold onto the Dutchman and now have him available for selection again.

Yoshida made his fifth Premier League start of the season in Southampton’s 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United on Saturday and says if he wants to continue having regular first team football he could not afford to make mistakes.

“It’s really tough, I understand. Virgil is one of the best centre backs in the Premier League,” Yoshida told reporters.

”I have to keep strong in my performance to the manager, the fans, get a result for the team. It’s only the things I can do. I just focus on myself and playing well.

“Even (Jack) Stephens was not involved in the squad. That’s the kind of really high competition we have in Southampton.”

While Southampton are one of the tightest teams at the back, conceding five goals in six matches this season, they continue to struggle up front and Saturday’s defeat marked the eighth time in nine home league games they have failed to score.

Their next league game is at Stoke City on Saturday.

United’s Lukaku struggles to provide urine sample and misses team bus

Show/hide article…

United produced a gritty and determined display, typical of a Jose Mourinho side, to ensure Lukaku’s first-half strike was enough to grind out three points.

But the Belgium international found it a lot harder to provide a urine sample for drug-testers than he has to consistently score goals this season and was forced to get a taxi on his own in an effort to catch up with the team bus.

The £75million man, much like the rest of Mourinho’s squad, has started the season in sensational form and has notched six Premier League goals already.

United have been slaughtering teams this season and have scored an astonishing 17 goals from just six league games.

Many felt that perhaps this indicated the Portugal boss had changed his approach over the summer, but leopards never change their spots.

The victory over Southampton was as trademark Mourinho as it gets, a well-organised, strong defensive display accompanied with an admirable execution of a game plan, there was even some touchline amateur dramatics to take us back to his Chelsea days.

‘Amazing points,’ enthused Mourinho after his side claimed all three points.

‘Honestly, I felt Southampton were strong. I felt their manager was enthusiastic, excited. We had good solidarity, organisation and spirit.’

The Saints certainly played their part in the fixture and put on a second-half performance that was arguably their best 45 minutes this season.

They asked so much of Mourinho’s side that United ended the game with three centre-backs, three full-backs and three defensive-minded midfielders - plus Lukaku - on the pitch.

While we have seen United blow teams away this season we must have learned by now that Mourinho does not do sentiment. Not when there are matches to win and titles to claim.

United and their rivals Manchester City currently sit joint-top of the league and the question on everybody’s lips is will Mourinho’s ability to be pragmatic when required ultimately overcome Pep Guardiola’s single-minded zeal for total football?

You certainly wouldn’t bet against it.

Or as Saints defender Maya Yoshida put it: 'I think Mourinho is realistic.

'He understands the situation — that’s why they became more defensive. And then they won.

Jose Mourinho finds out if he is to face FA action over Southampton sending off

Show/hide article…

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho will face no further action from the FA after he was sent to the stands during his side’s 1-0 win over Southampton.

The Portuguese was given his marching orders during the closing stages of the 1-0 win after encroaching onto the pitch in the dying seconds of the game.

He was trying to get his players back into position to see off any late threats from the hosts, but was dismissed by referee Craig Pawson.

After he was dismissed, Mourinho high-fived Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino before leaving the technical area.

When asked why he had been sent off after the match, Mourinho said: “I don’t know, you have to ask the referee.”

A solitary goal from Romelu Lukaku was enough to seal the win for the Red Devils.

With Southampton pressing, Mourinho had taken off Henrikh Mkhitaryan and replaced him with Chris Smalling as United adopted a defensive approach to try and see out the game.

Mourinho was given a touchline ban and fined £58,000 for two separate offences in November last year.

He was sent to the stands by referee Mark Clattenburg during a home match with Burnley, and fined for comments he made about referee Anthony Taylor prior to a game at Liverpool.

But he will face no further action, not even a warning over this latest incident.
