Man Utd will win title ahead of Man City, Southampton win showed why - Danny Murphy

Show/hide article…

Danny Murphy says Man Utd will beat Man City to the Premier League title

That’s the view of former Liverpool star Danny Murphy.

Jose Mourinho’s side edged past Southampton in a 1-0 win at St. Mary’s yesterday, while City hammered Crystal Palace 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola and City top the Premier League table on goal difference, with United just behind.

And pundit Murphy says despite City scoring 16 goals in their last three league games, Mourinho’s United will win the title as they can grind out results due to their work ethic.

“People doubt sometimes if they want to do the hard yards, creative players, but for Mourinho you have to or you’re out,” Murphy said on Match of the Day.

“It’s great to see players playing for the team even at a big club where they’re expected to go and dominate.

Manchester United fans furious about ‘double standards’ after Mourinho sent off

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho didn’t get the chance to watch the final few seconds of Manchester United 's victory over Southampton from his dugout, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The manager was sent off by referee Craig Pawson in stoppage time for seemingly encroaching on to the pitch when he was trying to give his players encouragement.

United held on for the 1-0 victory courtesy of Romelu Lukaku 's goal, but it was a defensive effort in the second period.

And Mourinho was issuing instructions when he was deemed to have strayed from his technical area, it appears, and sent to the stands.

Supporters were not happy at the action, which was deemed “pointless” in the final minutes.

The main reason for their fury? The difference between Mourinho’s treatment at the hands of referees… and the treament Premier League rivals Jurgen Klopp, Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola receive.

As far as United fans are concerned, these other bosses are often applauded for their touchline behaviour - while Mourinho is vilified for the exact same thing:

Puzzled Mourinho blames good Southampton weather

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho insisted he did not know why he was sent off in the final minutes of Manchester United’s 1-0 victory at Southampton as he bizarrely blamed their underwhelming performance on the good weather.

Midway through the first half and 1-0 ahead through Romelu Lukaku’s close-range finish, United appeared in such control that their latest convincing, one-sided win appeared almost certain to follow.

The hosts instead grew in confidence at the same rate at which United’s energy waned, in the warm conditions, and to the extent that had their long-term struggles in the final third not continued, Mourinho’s team would likely have dropped points.

They instead have a club record-equalling 16 for this stage of a Premier League season, though further difficulties could yet arise following Mourinho’s dismissal by referee Craig Pawson in second-half stoppage time.

Asked why he had been sent off, the Portuguese responded: "I don’t know. Craig told me to leave, and I left.

"Did I ask for an explanation? No. He told me to leave, and I left.

"(I collided) with the fourth official (Mike Jones).

"(My players) were really tired at the end. Nine of them didn’t play in midweek (in the 4-1 defeat of Burton) so nine of them, it’s not even an accumulation of fatigue.

"The weather was beautiful. Even if you train at 11am, 12pm, 3pm in Manchester, we don’t get this weather. Seriously. The last time we had this was in Los Angeles and then in Macedonia, and they felt (it).

"I saw some players not sharp. Great spirit and always trying, but not the same sharpness. So if your opponent is coming with everything against you, let’s do it for 10 or 15 minutes and stay solid.

“We are better this season than last. But this is nothing. It’s just a start. I really think that six teams are going to fight for the title.”

Mourinho was also asked about United’s supporters again using their controversial chant for Romelu Lukaku - one Kick It Out have called “offensive and discriminatory” - and the 54-year-old responded: "I don’t understand what the fans sing.

"The only music I understand clearly is one from my opponents when they tell Mourinho to go to a place.

"But the only thing I will say is the fans were amazing; the support amazing. It’s important to have that not when you’re winning 3-0 or 4-0 and winning the game, but it’s more important when you are defending and are exhausted.

United ask Saints for CCTV footage over Lukaku song

Show/hide article…

Manchester United have asked for CCTV footage to try to identify those chanting a controversial song about Romelu Lukaku in the win at Southampton, with a view to taking further action.

The 24-year-old striker continued his fine start to life at United at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon, when his first-half effort was enough to secure a hard-fought Premier League win.

Lukaku has quickly become a fans’ favourite, although a song to the tune of the Stone Roses’ ‘Made of Stone’ has caused controversy as it references the size of his penis - a song anti-discrimination body Kick It Out have called “offensive and discriminatory”.

Both club and player urged fans to refrain from chanting the song, but it could be heard in Southampton after he scored in the 20th minute, as were chants of “we’ll sing what we want”.

A United spokesperson said afterwards: "Manchester United has a zero tolerance stance on offensive chanting and behaviour.

"The club and player have been clear in asking for an end to the chant.

"The club has worked with relevant bodies and supporters groups in trying to eradicate any offensive behaviour and will take further action against individuals if this continues.

“The club is in discussion with the police and has asked for CCTV footage from Southampton and will try to identify those who disrespected the player’s wishes not to sing the song.”

Hampshire Police had received no complaints over the issue on Saturday night, and had no open log on the incident.

On Thursday, United posted a quote from Lukaku saying “fans have meant well with their songs but let’s move on together”.

The quotes included “#RespectEachOther” and Kick It Out reacted to the chants re-emerging on Saturday with a statement which read: "Kick It Out is aware of repeated racist chanting by supporters of Manchester United today (23 September).

"Kick It Out would like to reiterate its stance that such behaviour has no place in football. Romelu Lukaku himself has requested that the supporters ‘move on’ from singing the chant in question and Manchester United now has a responsibility to ensure that the request is complied with.

"If anyone has any evidence of supporters engaging in racist chanting, Kick It Out asks that you report it via the organisation’s app, to a steward or to the police.

“Kick It Out notes Manchester United’s statement requesting CCTV footage from Southampton and will again be liaising with the club, the FA and the police to identify potential perpetrators and ensure appropriate action is taken.”

United manager Jose Mourinho was not keen to discuss the subject before the trip to Southampton and after the game was asked about the subject again.

“I don’t understand what the fans sing,” he said.

"The only music I understand clearly is one from my opponents when they tell Mourinho to go to a place. That’s the only one I understand.

"But the only thing I will say is the fans were amazing, the support amazing from the first to the last minute.

“It’s important to have that not when you’re winning 3-0 or 4-0 and winning the game, but it’s more important when you are defending and are exhausted. The songs? I don’t understand them.”

Mourinho’s club are certainly aware of the matter, though, and were in discussions about a suitable response during the first half at St Mary’s.

Earlier this week, United contacted relevant bodies to see whether the song about Lukaku could be categorised as racism by the letter of the law.

Press Association Sport understands stewards were briefed ahead of the Carabao Cup tie with Burton on the song that uses a stereotype about black men, with a pocket of fans on Wednesday chanting about Lukaku but having appeared to tweak the words.

"We’ll sing what we want’’ would get a heartier rendition against Burton. It is understood there were no arrests or complaints to the Greater Manchester Police that evening.

Rio Ferdinand explains why Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in the Premier League

Show/hide article…

Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand believes Virgil van Dijk is the standout defender in the Premier League right now.

The Southampton defender was at the centre of the one of the most high profile transfer tussles during the summer window – with Liverpool heavily interested in signing the Dutchman – but the 26-year-old ended up staying with the Saints.

The ex-Celtic man is now in the process of reintegrating himself into the Southampton first team and, speaking exclusively to Tony Cascarino for talkSPORT, Ferdinand explained why he rates the centre-back so highly.

“I think Virgil van Dijk – he’s a player at the moment that has been courted by a lot of the top teams,” said the former England captain who has just announced plans to become a professional boxer.

“Southampton did well to keep hold of him.

“He’s got the stature; he’s a big guy and great on the floor as well.”

Ferdinand, who also turned out for West Ham, Leeds and Queens Park Rangers during his career, explained further how current defensive coaching has changed in the Premier League.

“Defending isn’t the first thing on defenders lips these days – that’s the difference,” the 38-year-old added.

“They think about passing the ball. The way the coaching is at the moment it’s all about on the ball, receiving the ball and then you think about defending.

“Especially things like one v one situations or the basics – defending your back post when the ball is wide or defending the front post when the ball is in wide areas.

“I think the basic elements of defending are probably not as high up the list of working on as what they once were.

“When you find someone like Virgil van Dijk, who is very good on the ball but also very good defensively, you do start jumping around and going crazy.”

Rio Ferdinand was speaking ahead of the EE Wembley Cup. To see Rio back on the pitch at Wembley click here.
