THE VERDICT: Worrying signs for Saints

Show/hide article…

If Saints have so far refused to press the panic button, there must be fingers starting to hover over it now.

Saints may have struggled for a while, but the Boxing Day hammering by Tottenham at Wembley has sounded alarm bells.

The result was messy, but forget that for a moment. The performance was poor, but put that to one side for now. It was the attitude that really caused the most concern.

Saints looked a beaten side for all but fleeting moments from virtually the start of the game until the point the destination of the three points had already slipped away at Tottenham.

They showed precious little fight and desire when it mattered, character or belief that they ever thought they were going to get anything from when they still had a chance to do so.

That then filters into performance, to not finding that extra bit of effort to close down, that mental discipline to hold your position and shape, that resilience to keep plugging away.

You make mistakes, you are out fought, and against good teams, which Spurs are, you get punished. And how.

Make no mistake, based on what was evidenced at Tottenham, even more so than points and results, Saints are in trouble.

And while there are some very poor teams around this season, if Saints continue to play like this, and given the fixture list they have in the second half of the campaign too, then they will be rolling the dice.

Much focus is on manager Mauricio Pellegrino. He needs to get a grip of this situation.

For Saints to get rid of a second manager in virtually half a year would seem almost unthinkable, especially for Les Reed and Ralph Krueger. Also there would be the question of exactly who would come now too.

But this is a results game. Pellegrino knows that.

Saints need to take a stronger line on Virgil van Dijk too, get rid as soon as the window reopens if that is, as it seems, where this is heading, and bring in proven quality – not gambles – and try and dig themselves out of this situation.

They just can’t afford more games like this one, or the downward momentum may become unstoppable.

Tottenham were knocking on the door from very early in the game, and never really stopped.

Dele Allie’s pass outside to Christian Eriksen allowed him to slide in a low cross that was met at the near post by Harry Kane, who found the side netting.

Eric Dier’s shot forced a save from Fraser Forster while Alli’s first time side footed volley went over.

However, the Saints rear-guard action was breached on 22 minutes.

Saints had breathed a sigh of relief as Graham Scott made the correct decision in awarding a free kick rather than a penalty to Spurs as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg brought down Danny Rose as he was just inches away from entering the box on the left side.

That was short lived though as Eriksen’s inswinging corner found Kane, who had got into space with embarrassing ease, and had possibly the least taxing finish of his record breaking Premier League calendar year haul, heading in from a couple of yards out.

Saints almost equalised moments later in bizarre Fashion.

Hugo Lloris parried a shot from Sofiane Boufal but was almost beaten by his own man, Danny Rose, whose attempted cushioned header back to his stopper was far too high.

Lloris just got his fingertips to the ball and had to scramble back to just keep it out, via the inside of the post.

That was pretty much as close as Saints came in the first half, and they found themselves further behind at the break with another painful goal to concede.

Saints got horribly pulled out of position by Tottenham, and it all ended predictably enough.

Alli fed the ball to Heung-Min Son on the left and he centred low into a space that had been vacated, leaving Kane to slide the ball home from just inside the six yard box.

Saints opened the second period with a flicker of fight.

However, when Shane Long was inadvertently sent through by an awful Spurs pass his lack of confidence shone bright as he managed to fire his shot against his standing leg and it was easy for Lloris.

The Spurs keeper was beaten when Mario Lemina cut across the face of the area and hit a left footed shot but it struck the top of the bar.

With those chances having been and gone in the space of a couple of minutes, Spurs wrapped up the three points with two quickfire goals.

Alli was able to come inside unchallenged and curled a right footed shot into the far corner from just outside the area for 3-0.

It was 4-0 when Nathan Redmond’s misplaced pass set Alli away on the counter attack. It was all too easy as his simple pass found Son, who finished across Forster.

Saints got on themselves on the scoresheet twice.

Boufal’s slightly deflected drive beat Lloris at the near post while sub Dusan Tadic took advantage of a poor punch away from the Spurs stopper and lobbed a good shot back into the net.

In the middle, though, Spurs had grabbed a fifth, and Kane a hat-trick, as Saints failed to defend a throw-in and then allowed Alli to play in the prolific striker.

This needs to be the low point of the season. If it’s not then troubled days lay ahead.

Maya Yoshida says Southampton are in worse position under Mauricio Pellegrino than Claude Puel

Maya Yoshida says Southampton are in worse position under Mauricio Pellegrino than Claude Puel

Maya Yoshida admits Southampton have got worse under Mauricio Pellegrino and has questioned the team’s attitude.

Southampton were thrashed 5-2 by Tottenham at Wembley on Tuesday, a result which leaves the Saints 14th in the Premier League and just two points above the relegation zone.

The club finished eighth last season under Claude Puel, 12 points clear of the bottom three.

Yoshida insisted the squad were behind Pellegrino despite their winless run extending to seven games.

He said: "Yes, we can’t pass on responsibility to anyone else - to the manager, team-mates, the club. That’s easy.

"Everyone has to take responsibility. Claude Puel was fired last season because the club wasn’t satisfied. But the situation is even worse now.

“So just sacking the manager is clearly not always the best choice. But it is not my decision, it is a club decision.”

Yoshida believes Tottenham, and Harry Kane in particular, had it far too easy at Wembley.

The Spurs striker scored a hat-trick and broke the record for the most Premier League goals in a calendar year.

“Does the attitude need to improve? I would say yes,” Yoshida said. “I think it is a really difficult situation for Southampton, we cannot play like this. The game became too open. We need to get organised.”

On Kane’s treble, Yoshida added: “I think for him it was very easy.”

Southampton have little time to put things right before they travel to Manchester United on Saturday. They then face fellow strugglers Crystal Palace at St Mary’s next Tuesday.

Dundee United kept up the pressure on St Mirren at the summit of the Scottish Championship table with a 2-0 victory over Livingston, including a consecutive clean sheet for Saints stopper Harry Lewis. In the process, the 20-year-old notched his seventh league shutout of the season.

In Belgium, Jordy Clasie was a 46th minute substitute in Club Brugge’s 4-2 win over Royal Excel Mouscron. The victory extended Brugge’s lead to 11 points at the helm of the First Division A standings.

Elsewhere, Harrison Reed’s Norwich City scored a goal in each half to keep bottom club Birmingham rooted to the foot of the Championship. The midfielder replaced James Maddison in the 80th minute, as the Canaries climbed to 15th.

Striker Olufela Olomola meanwhile came off the bench two minutes from time as second-half strikes from Omar Sowunmi and Jordan Green secured Yeovil a 2-0 victory over Cheltenham.

Ref Watch: Dermot Gallagher’s verdict on Callum Wilson’s equaliser for Bournemouth against West Ham

Show/hide article…

Should Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson’s stoppage-time equaliser against West Ham have stood? Could Tottenham’s Dele Alli have been sent off at Burnley? Dermot Gallagher has his say in this week’s Ref Watch.

There were a number of highly contentious decisions over Christmas in the Premier League and on the continent, including contentious goals at the Vitality, players not being shown red cards at Turf Moor and penalties that generated huge debate at both the London Stadium and the Santiago Bernabeu.

Luckily, however, former top-flight official Dermot is here to run his eye over all the hotly-disputed calls…

Incident: Wilson’s stoppage-time equaliser against West Ham is initially ruled offside, before referee Robert Madley gives the goal after consulting with his assistant.

Dermot says: It is a very tight offside call, but once Simon Long (referee’s assistant) calls that, the basics should just happen. He whistles and gives offside. It became too complicated after that. The debate was if he is in an offside position and has he interfered and has the ball touched him. He has interfered. It became too protracted. Simon was convinced it was offside and he is in the best position to judge offside. And the referee really should have just given offside and we would not be talking about that. But unfortunately the conversation took place and there was too much information being given by each party, it seemed to go on too long. In the end, they came to the conclusion that Wilson had not touched the ball, which was incorrect as he did touch the ball and it also went in off his arm.

Incident: Francis’ high challenge poleaxes West Ham midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate, but referee Madley only books the Bournemouth defender.

Dermot says: I would not say it was malicious and I do not think he has in any way, shape or form gone to hurt him, but he has a duty of care to his opponent and if you put your boot that high - and it is that high, it is not as though the player has ducked, his studs go in his face - I think it is a red card and most referees would agree with me.

Incident: Leicester midfielder Daniel Amartey is sent off after picking up two yellow cards against United.

Dermot says: We talk about breaking up a promising attack, he is never going to stop the player, who is clear into space, or get the ball (for the first yellow). The second one is just obvious and you talk about a second yellow for a red card - well, you would never have a more heaven-sent second yellow for a red card than that. It is just blatant to everybody.

Incident: Charlie Austin’s boot catches Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl in the face, with the Southampton striker subsequently being handed a three-match ban for the incident.

Dermot says: He has left his foot in there. At that point he can leap the player and you see lots of forwards who leap the goalkeeper; he has enough time to do that. His foot has come out and he has left it in there. I think that should be a red card and Lee Probert was very clever in that situation because he knew that something had happened. But he did not panic into a yellow card and go halfway house. He kept his powder dry, it went to the FA because it was an unseen incident, he did not see that go into his face and therefore the procedure could take place. And Austin accepted the charge and took a three-match ban.

Incident: Alli lunges in on Burnley defender Charlie Taylor, but referee Craig Pawson only showed the England international him a yellow card.

Dermot says: It is low, he has gone one footed, it is reckless, but it is 100 per cent not a red card. It is not with massive speed and intensity to hurt, his feet are low and the referee [Michael Oliver] is absolutely correct in his action. The referee has done really well here because he has judged that on a Tottenham player making a foul, he has not prejudged by the name on the shirt. People have been banging on about Dele Alli, but you have to be careful about Alli. He has to be judged the same as every other player.

Incident: Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark is judged to have fouled West Ham forward Michail Antonio just inside the area.

Dermot says: Tough, tough call in fairness and the VAR will clear this up on FA Cup weekend. I do not think anybody would criticise a referee for this decision because look at the speed we are watching and the player is already in the penalty area. It is just outside, but it is marginal and you could also argue that it continues inside.

Incident: Real right-back Dani Carvajal is sent off after pushing the ball away with his hand and Barcelona are awarded a penalty.

Dermot’s verdict: Referee should have waited and not sent the player off.

Dermot says: If he had just waited one second because the ball was always going towards the line, then the referee could have given the goal and kept the player on. This is almost back to Arsenal v Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League final when Jens Lehmann was sent off and the same thing happened. They did score the penalty, but had they not scored the penalty they would have been even more upset. It is a massive gamble, let’s be honest, as in a massive game like that, if that suddenly spins wide….but you could argue that you were just delaying to see what happened. But if he had just waited that one second, because there is no rush to give a penalty or the red card, he always had that time. And it is amazing that in that one second the whole situation for the referee had changed.

Manchester United vs Southampton | Teams, streams, predictions and odds

Show/hide article…

Manchester United will hope to bounce back from successive draws when they host a struggling Southampton side on Saturday.

Jose Mourinho’s Christmas spell has not gone to plan after his side followed a disappointing 2-2 draw at Leicester with a another point against Burnley on Boxing Day.

It means United have not won in three matches after defeat to Bristol City in the Carabao Cup quarter-final earlier this month.

But United will fancy their chances against a Southampton side who have managed just one point from four and shipped 11 goals in their last four Premier League games.

Manchester United host Southampton at Old Trafford with kick-off scheduled for 5.30pm on Saturday, December 30.

The match will be televised on BT Sport 1 and BT 4K UHD from 5pm on Saturday night.

You can also follow the match LIVE on Standard Sport, follow team news and goal updates from 4.30pm.

Chris Smalling is a doubt for the visit of Southampton after he missed the 2-2 draw with Burnley on Boxing Day.

The England international picked up an injury in the draw with Leicester ahead of Christmas and will likely sit out until the New Year along with team-mate Matteo Darmian.

The visitors will be without the suspended Charlie Austin as he serves a three-game ban for his challenge on Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.

Liverpool to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75m

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk will join Liverpool from Southampton for £75million when the January transfer window opens on New Year’s Day.

Liverpool announced the signing on Twitter as they posted a picture of Van Dijk posing with a Reds shirt standing in front of a Christmas tree at his house.

Van Dijk completed a medical on Wednesday after Liverpool and Southampton reached an agreement over a £75m fee for the centre back.

Van Dijk will be assigned the No 4 shirt for Jurgen Klopp’s side when he completes his transfer to Anfield from Southampton on Monday.

Talks have been ongoing in recent days with Southampton leaving the Dutch defender out of their squad to face Tottenham on Boxing Day as discussions came to a head.

Manchester City had also held talks for the 26-year-old but were reluctant to meet Southampton’s asking price while Chelsea had also asked to be kept informed.

City had cooled their interest when the fee was quoted at £60m last summer so were never likely to be willing to go as high as £75m for the defender.

Van Dijk took to Twitter to express his delight at joining ‘one of the biggest clubs in world football’ and said he couldn’t wait to get started at Anfield.

‘Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool player,’ Van Dijk wrote. 'Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football!

‘I can’t wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come.’

‘I’m now looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting started.’

The fee, a world record for a defender, would also see Van Dijk’s former club Celtic earn around £7.5million from a sell-on fee.

Van Dijk is expected to earn around £200,000 a week as part of the transfer.

The defender was understood to be flattered by Manchester City’s interest and that of Chelsea and Arsenal but Liverpool was his preference.

He is excited at the prospect of working under Jurgen Klopp and with the prospect of a regular starting place.

Liverpool had also targeted Basle defender Manuel Akanji as an alternative to van Dijk but this outlay may put that deal on hold.

The 22-year-old Swiss international is considered one of the best prospects in Europe but would cost close to £30million.

Liverpool were considered favourites to sign Van Dijk last summer until Southampton reported them for an illegal approach.

Van Dijk had handed in a transfer request to try and force through a move, only for Southampton to stand firm and hold on to their star defender until the window shut at the beginning of September.

Southampton had become enraged by reports linking Van Dijk to Liverpool having received no official approach and contacted the Premier League to ask them to investigate a potential illegal approach for the defender.

Liverpool were then forced to issue a grovelling public apology and withdraw from the deal but talks have since resumed between the two parties.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino had refused to rule out Van Dijk leaving the club in the January transfer window.

Liverpool’s need for a centre back was highlighted by their defensive problems earlier in the season, though they have tightened up at the back recently with three clean sheets in their last four Premier League games.

Liverpool land Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75m: Transfer official on January 1

Show/hide article…

Manchester City and Chelsea have been beaten to the Dutchman. The Reds agreed a world-record fee for a defender of £75m to land Jurgen Klopp’s top target. Following discreet negotiations over the past few days, an agreement was reached today. Van Dijk is set to earn £180,000 a week at Anfield. And he will officially become a Liverpool player when the transfer window opens on January 1. Van Dijk’s switch to Liverpool was announced at 6pm after he underwent a medical today. Their pursuit during the summer had to be put on the backburner after Southampton accused them of tapping up Van Dijk. But while Liverpool cooled their charge to lure the defender to Merseyside, Van Dijk made it clear he wanted to go.

“Liverpool was always his first choice” The 26-year-old handed in a transfer request and was left out of Southampton’s team by Mauricio Pellegrino for yesterday’s trip to Tottenham. With the New Year fast approaching, Van Dijk has played his last game for the Saints. City had been confident of winning the battle, while Antonio Conte has been keen to take Van Dijk to Chelsea. But Liverpool was always his first choice. Southampton will subsequently look to reinvest the money from Van Dijk’s sale to strenghten their squad.

They have been dragged into a relegation battle after a poor run of form and are in need of goals especially. Liverpool, though, will be delighted to have staved off City and Chelsea’s interest. It will become the joint-second biggest transfer in Premier League history, level with Romelu Lukaku’s £75m move to Manchester United from Everton, and only behind United’s £89 Paul Pogba deal. The most expensive defender in football became Kyle Walker in the summer when City paid Tottenham £54m for the right-back, but Van Dijk will comfortably eclipse that. Naby Keita was set to become Liverpool’s record signing in the summer, but Van Dijk will ultimately cost around £25m more than the RB Leipzig midfielder. Meanwhile, Celtic are set to receive a hefty £7.5m as part of the transfer. The Scottish club arranged a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of their deal with Southampton back in 2015.

In terms of what this will likely mean for the Liverpool team, Joel Matip is expected to be the preferred partner for Van Dijk in the centre of Klopp’s defence. Dejan Lovren has long been criticised by Reds fans and pundits for mistakes made at the back. Ragnar Klavan, meanwhile, has always been a fill in at Anfield. Joe Gomez may now struggle to gain as many chances to showcase his talents in the centre, but he has sone at right-back in the absence of Nathaniel Clyne. Van Dijk will certianly bolster Liverpool’s hopes of progressing far in the Champions League knockout stages too. The Reds face Porto in February in the last 16, which Van Dijk will be elligible to feature in. He will also be able to play in the FA Cup this season.

Van Dijk has spoken out on his move, posting a message on Instagram and Twitter. He said: "Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player! Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football! "I can’t wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come. "I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Les Reed, the board, manager, players, fans and everyone at Southampton. "I will always be indebted to the club for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League and despite a difficult last few months I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saints and have made friends for life at the club. Thank you for everything. “Thank you for all the messages of support. I’m now looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting started.”

Liverpool confirm world-record £75m deal for Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have finally won the race to sign Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk for a world record £75 million fee for a defender.

The two clubs had again been in discreet negotiations in recent days following the acrimonious breakdown of a potential deal last summer and today reached an agreement on the transfer.

Personal terms and a medical have been completed and confirmation was made by Liverpool this evening.

Manchester City and Chelsea were both also interested and made inquiries at different stages of the past 12 months but Van Dijk will move to Anfield on January 1.

The Dutch defender has been handed the No 4 shirt and becomes the most expensive defender in world football.

Liverpool FC transfer news: Reds agree £75m fee for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk - reports

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have agreed a £75m fee with Southampton for defender Virgil van Dijk, according to reports.

The Netherlands international looks set to become the most expensive defender in the history of the game when he completes a January transfer to Anfield, barring any late super-bid from either Manchester City or Chelsea, who have both been credited with an interest in the 26-year-old.

Liverpool were hoping to sign Van Dijk during the summer, but they were reported to the Premier League by Southampton over an alleged tapping-up of the player.

The Anfield club were ready to pay £60m for the defender, but have had to raise their offer by £15m to get the deal wrapped up in January.

The £75m fee will make Van Dijk the most expensive defender in world football, breaking the previous record set last summer, when Manchester City spent £54m to sign Kyle Walker from Tottenham Hotspur.
