Liverpool to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75m

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have smashed the world record transfer fee for a defender by sensationally completing the £75million signing of Virgil Van Dijk.

He will officially become a Liverpool player on January 1. Van Dijk underwent a medical on the South Coast on Wednesday, with Southampton’s consent, after the two clubs agreed a fee. He has signed a contract worth more than £180,000 per week that runs until June 2023.

Liverpool have landed a player who will be eligible for the Champions League in the second half of the season – he could even make his debut against Everton in the FA Cup third-round tie next Friday. Van Dijk has been assigned the No 4 shirt.

The Holland international’s future had come under intense scrutiny after he was left out of Southampton’s squad for their games against Tottenham and Huddersfield.

He has been a target for most of the top clubs in the Premier League, with runaway leaders Manchester City particularly keen. Pep Guardiola was eager to add him to his squad and City were aware of the finance it would cost. They had been in talks with Southampton.

City first sent a scouting delegation to watch Van Dijk in November 2016 - ironically in a 0-0 draw with Liverpool - and viewed him as the long-term successor for Vincent Kompany, whose injury problems flared up once more against Newcastle on Wednesday night.

But his ambition from early this summer was to move to Anfield to work with Jurgen Klopp and that wish never wavered, even though Liverpool were initially forced to withdraw their interest in June after Southampton threatened to report them to the Premier League for an illegal approach.

That incident left Liverpool red faced but Mike Gordon, the President of Fenway Sports Group, made concerted efforts to improve relations between the clubs and it got to the point where there was a possibility of him moving to Anfield on deadline day in August.

The two clubs have done significant business since the summer of 2014 and Van Dijk becomes the sixth player to swap St Mary’s for Anfield following Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Sadio Mane. The total for those transfers is £168.5million.

Southampton were adamant they would not sell Van Dijk back in the summer but the landscape has changed.

Van Dijk is likely to say his goodbyes to Southampton’s squad on Thursday. He was given permission not to report to their Staplewood training ground on Wednesday so he could undergo a rigorous fitness test - he only played 16 times for the Saints this calendar year due to a serious ankle problem.

He is relishing the opportunity to get his career on Merseyside started and he posted a message on his Instagram, having been pictured at home with a Liverpool jersey, to express his joy.

‘Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool player,’ said Van Dijk. 'Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football! I can’t wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come.

'I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to (Technical Director) Les Reed, the board, manager, players and fans and everyone at Southampton. I will always be indebted to the club for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League and despite a difficult last few months I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saints and have made friends for life at the club.

‘Thank you for everything. Thank you for all the messages of support. I’m now looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting started.’

Liverpool make huge breakthrough in bid to land top target

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is closing in on a £75m dream move to Liverpool.

Mirror Sport understands Southampton have agreed a deal in principle for van Dijk to move to Anfield.

Van Dijk, 26, is set to sign a contract worth £180,000-a-week after setting his heart on a move to Liverpool ahead of Manchester City.

Southampton do not have a problem dealing with Liverpool despite reporting them to the Premier League for allegedly “tapping up” van Dijk last summer.

Southampton simply want to sell to the highest bidder and they know the 26-year-old Dutch defender wants to move to Anfield ahead of any other club. Southampton may confirm publicly they have accepted a bid from Liverpool.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp sees van Dijk as his main man, wants to bring him in to shore up his defence and that has persuaded the Saints defender to go to Merseyside rather than the Etihad.

It has been a long running transfer saga which started last summer when Klopp chased van Dijk and persuaded him to move to Liverpool ahead of City, Chelsea and Arsenal who all tried to sign him.

But the deal blew up after Liverpool were forced to back off and apologise after allegations that they flew van Dijk to Blackpool on a private jet and Klopp had bombarded him with Whats App messages.

Van Dijk has struggled this season to find his form having had his head turned by Liverpool and was dropped from the last two match day squads by Southampton who now just want to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and get the best price.

City have made an enquiry but also have Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez on their wish list and he has a £32m buy-out clause.

Chelsea have been interested but it is understood that Liverpool are now in pole position and are set to get him as soon as the window opens.

Southampton want a record £70m-plus fee and the long running saga now looks like being resolved once and for all.

Liverpool agree world record deal with Southampton for Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Liverpool will sign Virgil van Dijk when the transfer window re-opens in January after agreeing a world-record deal to sign the Southampton defender.

The Dutch centre-back will move to Anfield in a transfer that is understood to be worth £75m, eclipsing the previous world-record fee for a defensive player set when Manchester City bought Kyle Walker for £53m.

Liverpool announced on Wednesday night: “Liverpool Football Club can confirm they have reached an agreement with Southampton for the transfer of Virgil van Dijk.

“The Reds have agreed a deal with the south coast club, and the player himself, that will see the 26-year-old defender move to Anfield when the transfer window re-opens on January 1, 2018.”

Van Dijk, who will be assigned the squad number four, commented that he was “delighted and honoured” to join the Merseyside club, who currently sit fourth in the Premier League table.

Writing on his Instagram page, Van Dijk said: “Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football.

“I cannot wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come.”

Personal terms of around £180,000-a-week have been agreed between Van Dijk and the club. Both Manchester City and Chelsea were also interested and had made inquiries with Southampton at different stages over the past six months, but the defender has long had his heart set on a move to Anfield.

The agreement completes months of protracted negotiations between the two clubs, with Van Dijk first handing in a transfer request in August. “I have been left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed,” he complained at the time.

However a move fell through when Liverpool apologised for making an alleged illegal approach for the 26-year-old, after Southampton made an official complaint to the Premier League.

Van Dijk remained on the south coast but missed the start of the season amid concerns over his focus and mentality, before being slowly reintegrated back into the first-team under new manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

However he has made just 12 appearances in all competitions this season and was left out of recent games against Chelsea, Huddersfield Town and Tottenham Hotspur.

Van Dijk is now the most expensive defender in world football and the second most expensive transfer in Premier League history.

His fee of £75m is level with Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku and behind only the club’s £90m purchase of Paul Pogba, in August 2016.

Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool to sign Southampton defender for world record £75m

Show/hide article…

Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk will join Liverpool when the transfer window re-opens on 1 January in a world record £75m deal.

The Netherlands international had been expected to join the Reds last summer after he handed in a transfer request.

But a move fell through when Liverpool apologised for making an alleged illegal approach for the 26-year-old.

The fee is the most ever paid for a defender - Manchester City paid £52m to Monaco for Benjamin Mendy in July.

Van Dijk said in a statement he was “delighted and honoured” to sign for the Merseyside club and accepted he had had a “difficult last few months” at St Mary’s.

He was left out of Southampton’s squad for their 5-2 Premier League defeat by Tottenham on Tuesday, prompting speculation he was set to leave the club.

“Southampton have agreed a fee that will set a new world record for a defender,” the south coast club confirmed on Wednesday.

The player only signed a new six-year contract last year, having joined the Saints from Celtic for £13m in September 2015.

However, Liverpool’s interest in the summer prompted a transfer request from the player which saw him forced to train alone by manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

He returned to first team action in September, featuring in a win at Crystal Palace.

Van Dijk’s former club Celtic will benefit from the record transfer fee - the Scottish champions are understood to have had a 10% sell-on agreement on any future deal.

Though he will join the club on 1 January, Van Dijk will not be able to register as a player until 2 January so will not be available for Liverpool’s trip to Burnley on Monday.

The Anfield club also announced he will wear the number four shirt.

The Van Dijk fee tops the £48m release clause the Reds have agreed for RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, who will move to Anfield next summer.

"Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player. Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football.

"I can’t wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Les Reed, the board, manager, players, fans and everyone at Southampton.

“I will always be indebted to the club for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League and despite a difficult last few months, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saints and have made friends for life at the club.”

It has cost Liverpool an additional £15m and half a season, but manager Jurgen Klopp has finally got his man.

Southampton pulled the plug on a proposed £60m deal during the summer, such was their unhappiness at the way they were being railroaded into a transfer.

However, the tell-tale sign Klopp knew who he wanted to address defensive deficiencies and wouldn’t be changing his mind came through the fact Liverpool did not try for an alternative.

After conceding 23 goals in 20 Premier League games so far, Klopp has been reminded often enough he needed to strengthen his defence.

Now he has done it, he will hope his side can retain their attacking brilliance and close the gap to Manchester United and Chelsea and, in time, start to challenge at the very top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool’s desire to sign Van Dijk comes through the size of the fee, which Manchester City - who were also interested - were not prepared to match.

As for Southampton, they have got rid of a player who clearly had no wish to remain on the south coast and generated the funds that will allow them to reinforce a squad that has struggled for the past 12 months and led to speculation manager Mauricio Pellegrino is on dodgy ground.

France full-back Benjamin Mendy moved from Monaco to Manchester City in 2017, with Kyle Walker joining Pep Guardiola’s side from Tottenham in the same year.

David Luiz joined Paris St-Germain from Chelsea in 2014, while John Stones arrived at City from Everton in 2016.

Van Dijk will become the sixth Southampton player signed by Liverpool since 2014 - at a total cost of £171.5m.

The other five to have joined are: Sadio Mane (£34m), Adam Lallana (£25m), Dejan Lovren (£20m), Nathaniel Clyne (£12.5m) and Rickie Lambert (£5m).

Southampton have got one hell of a deal. Van Dijk is a good player, yes, but for £75m? No, he’s not worth it at all.

Southampton could have named any price they wanted. They knew Liverpool were absolutely desperate for a centre-half. Everyone is aware they are desperate - we have seen them come up short several times this season.

When Liverpool try and sign a goalkeeper - which they also desperately need - they will find the same thing.

We’ve been saying it for a number of years now - that transfer fees have gone through the roof - and this one has taken it to another level.

It seems inevitable for Southampton to lose top players every year. It must be disappointing to see so many players leave. Their scouting system has been good - they tend to sell and make profits but eventually that will back fire. They’re in a relegation battle this season - they’re going to have to scrap.

It’s crazy money for a central defender. When he was at Celtic, a lot didn’t think he was good enough for a top-six club at that time. Southampton took a chance and suddenly his fee has gone through the roof. It’s a crazy fee. Southampton have been good at finding replacements, but whether they can do that again is now the question.

It has always been on the cards. It was just a case of when and for how much. Virgil has been outstanding at Southampton. I looked at him as a player who could quite literally go to any club in the world. He is that good.

I would say since he came back into the side this season he hasn’t quite been firing on all cylinders and looking quite as good as he was before the injury, but that could be said for the whole side.

Liverpool agree deal to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75m

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have agreed a £75m deal to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.

Liverpool confirmed Van Dijk will complete a move on January 1, 2018, having been left out of Southampton’s side for their 5-2 defeat at Tottenham on Boxing Day.

The agreed fee for Van Dijk is a world-record sum for a defender, topping Manchester City’s deal to sign Kyle Walker in July.

Van Dijk, who will wear No 4 at Liverpool, said he was delighted to be joining “one of the biggest clubs in world football” on Instagram.

“I can’t wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come,” he said.

Southampton confirmed the world-record deal and sent their best wishes to Van Dijk, who admitted he owed a debt to the south coast club.

Van Dijk added: "I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Les Reed, the board, manager, players, fans and everyone at Southampton.

“I will always be indebted to the club for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League and despite a difficult last few months I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saints and have made friends for life at the club.”

Van Dijk was keen on a move to Anfield last summer and handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s, but Liverpool ended their pursuit when Southampton complained the Merseyside club had made an illegal approach for the centre-back.

Manchester City had opened discussions with Southampton over a move for Van Dijk, according to Sky sources, but Mauricio Pellegrino said he was unaware of the club’s interest.

Gary Neville: Virgil van Dijk transfer fee to join Liverpool is ‘incredible’

Show/hide article…

Gary Neville says the £75m fee paid by Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk is “incredible”, but will prove a good deal if he helps his new club win trophies.

It was announced on Wednesday evening that a deal has been agreed between Liverpool and Southampton to make Van Dijk the most expensive defender in history.

And former Manchester United centre-back Neville told Sky Sports: "It’s a lot of money! When I first heard it I thought ‘wow, £75m’. I’m not surprised by the actual transfer but that is an incredible amount of money.

“Liverpool need defenders and have to pay to get him. That’s the way the market is and it isn’t going to change.”

Van Dijk will complete the move on January 1, having been pursued by Liverpool in the summer and handing in a transfer request in an effort to leave St Mary’s.

Liverpool ended their pursuit on that occasion as Southampton complained the Reds had made an illegal approach for the centre-back.

But, having been criticised at times this season for their defending, Liverpool have now got their man for a fee that eclipses Manchester City’s £53m deal to sign full-back Kyle Walker in July.

“It sounds like a fantastic deal for Southampton,” said Neville. "But if Liverpool can stop their creaking in big matches when put under pressure then it will be a good deal for Liverpool as well because people will forget about the money that has been spent in a year or two if they can win trophies and get the defence right.

"Liverpool have to get the defence right, in the bigger matches they do stress quite quickly and can crack, so from their point of view, paying that sort of money hopefully it pays off, but for Southampton they would snap your hand off for £75m.

"Over the last few years they have lost some good players for good money but nothing at this level. It seems like a fantastic sell.

“I was surprised in the summer when I saw £50m for Kyle Walker but he has done brilliantly and it’s just the way the market has shifted to an incredible level that shocked me.”

How have Liverpool’s signings from Southampton worked out?

Show/hide article…

Liverpool will sign Virgil van Dijk for £75million when the transfer window opens on January 1 as the Reds raid Southampton for the fifth time in three and a half years.

The world-record fee for a defender means Liverpool have spent a total of £166.5million on Southampton players since the summer of 2014.

But how have Liverpool’s previous signings from Southampton fared? Sportsmail has put together a guide on all the players to leave St Mary’s for Anfield since 2014 and rated each of them below.

The first person to make the journey up the M6 and the one that was easily the least successful. Rickie Lambert made a return to his boyhood club and, on paper, it should have been fine. He had scored 15 and 13 goals in his previous two Premier League seasons after a long and arduous career - and he was only ever meant to be backup at Liverpool. But then Luis Suarez left, the pressure on Lambert increased as injuries and hurricane Mario Balotelli hit, and the England international struggled. He left a season later with just three goals in all competitions to his name - has since retired from football.

Signing up Southampton’s captain after a successful second season in the Premier League seemed like a no brainer, even if the fee for Adam Lallana seemed a bit inflated. But Lallana struggled to settle initially, another victim of the fact that Liverpool lost their best attacking talents through sale and injury that summer. The arrival of Jurgen Klopp changed things for the midfielder. He has impressed under the German, becoming one of the better central midfielders in the division on his day. Few would argue against the fee now.

The Croatian defender impressed during his time at Southampton and he seemed like the answer to the defensive woes that plagued Liverpool. The fact they are now signing up Virgil van Dijk suggests the reality has been slightly different. Lovren had a very tough first season but improved over time and found genuine form under Klopp. His role in the run to the Europa League final cannot be dismissed. But Liverpool are replacing a £20m defender just three and a half years later. He will not be first choice when Van Dijk arrives. It’s hard to see him as a positive piece of recruitment, overall. Endured a true horrorshow in the 4-1 loss to Tottenham earlier this season as he was taken apart at Wembley.

Nathaniel Clyne was an impressive signing for Southampton, proof that plundering the lower leagues can work for Premier League sides. And Liverpool definitely spent sensibly when they signed him for £12.5m. After all, in a world where Kyle Walker cost more than £50m this summer, a comparable right back for nearly a fifth of that price is a steal. The only complaint you could have about Clyne, and this is only because he is an attacking full-back, is that he is not that effective in advanced positions. He provided just two assists and scored no goals in the Premier League last season. However, he is solid and, at just 26, Liverpool have his position sown up for a few years. Has yet to play this campaign after struggling with fitness problems.

The Senegalese forward’s best day in a Southampton shirt probably came against Liverpool - he bagged a hat-trick to completely turn a game on its head. There were still question marks over Sadio Mane when he arrived at Anfield, but he completely pushed those aside last campaign. The 25-year-old scored 13 goals in 27 Premier League games and was a key component of Liverpool’s push for the top four. He has very swiftly become one of Liverpool’s most important players, the man who makes Klopp’s pressing and hard running system tick. Mane is one of Klopp’s fearsome front four, along with Philippe Coutinho, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino. This signing could be taken as a good omen.

Liverpool have OVERPAID for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk - Gary Neville

Show/hide article…

The Reds announced earlier today that they had reached an agreement for the Dutchman, who will arrive in a deal worth £75m.

The 26-year-old passed a medical and will officially join when the transfer window opens on January 1.

Van Dijk was pursued by Jurgen Klopp throughout the summer but a deal never materialised, despite him submitting a transfer request.

Liverpool were desperate for reinforcements at the back as they look to hunt down runaway leaders Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

And while they seem to have fixed a problem position, Neville is shocked at the price they were forced to pay.
