Virgil van Dijk told to snub Liverpool for Chelsea move

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has been linked with Chelsea and Liverpool

That’s according to Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson who’s urged the Southampton star to move to west London.

Van Dijk is widely expected to leave St Mary’s having been dropped for the last two games.

Southampton refused to let him leave in the summer.

But his time on the south coast looks to be coming to an end.

Merson suggested earlier today that Van Dijk will join Liverpool, saying: “Yeah I think he will be playing for Liverpool by January.

"No I think it will be Liverpool. I think Liverpool.”

Højbjerg’s heartfelt response

Show/hide article…

Saints were beaten 5-2 at Wembley Stadium on a chastening afternoon, and Højbjerg summed up the hurt that he was feeling after the match.

“The disappointment is huge when you lose, and when you lose like this – at one point we were 5-1 down – it is of course devastating,” he said.

"It’s frustrating, it’s disappointing – there’s a lot of words, a lot of things in my mind, but I think it’s important now that we show what we are, that we stand up and show the character that we have.

"In each person we must show that, and also as a team – that we still have something to say, still have something to do and most importantly have something to show.

"We always need to keep going with a clear mind. But after today we have to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask if we really did everything that was possible to get the margins, or the luck, or the result that we could have gotten here.

“I think in times like this you must show the spirit, character and mentality of the team and this is what we need to show now, because there is no doubt that we have amazing players and a good squad to compete, in my opinion, against even the very best. It is now that we need to show who we are and what we came here to do.”

Transfer news LIVE! Premier League latest

Show/hide article…

Jack Wilshere has been waiting a long time for an occasion like Friday evening. The 25-year-old has not started a Premier League game for Arsenal against top-six opposition since November 2014, writes James Olley.

He is in line to do so when Liverpool visit Emirates Stadium courtesy, in part, of Aaron Ramsey’s hamstring injury, but more significantly, the diligence with which he has applied himself amid great uncertainty over his future for club and country.

Wilshere has made no secret of his desire to stay with the Gunners and also break into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for next summer’s World Cup finals in Russia.

Arsene Wenger and Southgate have both lauded Wilshere’s ability but cited concerns about whether he can transform a hugely promising career repeatedly truncated by injury into sustained effectiveness at the highest level.

Jack Wilshere has been waiting a long time for an occasion like Friday evening. The 25-year-old has not started a Premier League game for Arsenal against top-six opposition since November 2014.

A hastily-arranged loan move to Bournemouth followed but after 22 starts and making real strides with his fitness, April saw him break his leg and return to square one.

Yet he refused to give up, working tirelessly to return in September, since when he has thrived in the Europa League with Wenger voicing his respect for Wilshere’s maturity — something that has also been questioned in the past, most controversially when pictured smoking on nights out.

“Obviously, I heard the boss speak about it, but I feel like it comes with age,” he said. “I picked up a lot of injuries over the years. When I used to watch my game, every time I picked the ball up I wanted to run with it, I wanted to hurt the opposition, but now I can pick my times.

“I don’t have to do it every time. Sometimes you can just pass and move into a better position. My time at Bournemouth helped me. I improved defensively, I’m not one who just dives into tackles now. I try and pick my opportunities when the ball breaks. I feel good, I’m happy with the way things are going and I’m enjoying playing here.

“I only had a few days to pick between three or four clubs, and as soon as I spoke to Eddie [Howe] and Jason [Tindale], his assistant, it was clear to me that was the right place to go.

“It was totally different to here at Arsenal, of course. The aim at the start of the season was to stay in the League. I have never been in a position like that, so it was new to me.

“I felt I improved massively defensively, I had to learn a lot out of possession. A team like Bournemouth against the big teams would try and sit in and hit them on the break, so I learned that side of the game.”

It may prove useful this evening given the vast array of attacking talent Liverpool have at their disposal. Mohamed Salah is the League’s top goalscorer while Wenger admitted yesterday that even he is not sure exactly which players from Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Dominic Solanke and Daniel Sturridge will supplement him in advanced areas.

Wenger has decisions to make tactically — chiefly whether to revert to a back three with Shkodran Mustafi expected to be fit — while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be hoping to start in an effort to prove his move from Arsenal to Liverpool was not a £40million exercise in relocating from one substitutes’ bench to another.

Wilshere counted himself among the pained onlookers as Arsenal were thrashed 4-0 at Anfield in August. Wenger admitted the result will live with him for the rest of his life while goalkeeper Petr Cech described that day as one of the worst in his career.

Talk of revenge is inevitable but that maturity Wenger identified in Wilshere quickly came to the fore again.

“When you have a game like that, you try and forget it as quickly as possible,” he said. “I wasn’t playing that game but I watched it. None of the lads was happy with that performance. We tried to forget it straight away.

“We did bounce back at the time quite well. We pushed on, we’re a better team since then and we need to get it out of our mind. We might feel like we owe them one and we want to put things right in that sense, but we have to keep that out of our mind going in to the game.

“We’re fifth, they’re fourth, it’s a big game for us. We played a big game against Manchester United and we lost, so we need to start beating the big teams and it’s a perfect place to start.”

And as Wilshere prepares to enter the final six months of his contract, it is the perfect place to continue his own revival.

Southampton admit defeat over Virgil van Dijk with Manchester City poised to swoop

Show/hide article…

Southampton have admitted defeat in their fight to hold on to Virgil van Dijk, with Manchester City poised to make an offer between £60 and £70m for the highly-rated defender.

The Dutchman, who failed to force through an exit in the summer after handing in a transfer request, was left out of Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad for the Boxing Day trip to Tottenham.

Speaking in the wake of Southampton’s 5-2 defeat by Spurs, Pellegrino insisted he had no regrets about keeping van Dijk in the summer, despite the defender’s mixed run of form in the first half of the current campaign, but suggested the club are now resigned to losing the 26-year-old.

“We tried to do the best for the team. The board decided to try to keep our best player at the club. This situation is a big learning curve for everybody and now we decide what is the best for the club,” he said.

“The manager decides what is the best. We win, draw and lose, with and without Virgil. We have to wait until January. I can’t control the market so we’ll see what happens.”

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has set his sights on bringing in a central defender next month due to the current injury concerns of his backline.

Van Dijk is the top target for both Guardiola and director of football Txiki Begiristain and it is understood Southampton are willing to do business, with the defender’s recent exclusion from Pellegrino’s match-day squad the latest indicator that a deal is close to being secured.

However, the City hierarchy are highly mindful of the problems that arose with Liverpool’s very public interest with the Dutch centre-half in the summer.

To complicate matters, Liverpool remain interested in the defender and could make another move in January while Chelsea have also been linked to the player.

If City fail to land Van Dijk, attention is expected to turn to Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez and West Brom’s Jonny Evans.

Man Utd star Marouane Fellaini lets rip at Saints ace Shane Long over shocking tackle

Show/hide article…

Fellaini has suffered with injury this season and he believes Long almost broke his leg.

The Irishman was booked for a lunging tackle that left Fellaini in agony during United’s 1-0 win at St. Marys back in September.

He has missed Manchester United’s last seven Premier League games and it is currently unknown when the midfielder will return to action.

Speaking about his current knee ligament trouble, Fellaini told Belgian outfit HUMO: “It could have been worse … there was that attack by Shane Long. Have you seen that?

“Do you see how much crazy luck I’ve had? He could have broken my leg!

“Without that tape around my ankle it would have certainly broken, and I would have been out for six months.

Pellegrino: Keeping van Dijk was not a mistake

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says he does not regret Saints’ decision to keep hold of Virgil van Dijk in the summer.

Saints were praised for refusing to let the Dutch defender go in the face of interest from Liverpool.

However, he looks all but certain to leave in January, and was again left out of the squad for yesterday’s hammering at Tottenham.

Manchester City have been linked with a £60m offer for van Dijk as soon as the window opens, with a quick sale seeming to suit all parties.

Chelsea and Liverpool could yet revive their previous interest in him, but, while Saints will want the best price they can get, they know they need to spend the money on fresh faces and so cannot afford to hold out for too long.

The van Dijk saga appears to have been a distraction for the best part of six months, and is still causing problems now.

Pellegrino, though, doesn’t believe that keeping him was an error of judgement from the club.

“No. I think we try to do the best for the team,” he insisted.

“The board decide this to keep our best players in the club.

“Now this situation is a big learning for everybody and now we decide in January what is the best for the club.”

Pellegrino was again not giving much away as to why he didn’t pick van Dijk, who didn’t even travel with the squad, but it is not too hard to read between the lines now.

“I decided it is the best for the team,” he said.

“I know that around Virgil will be a lot of speculation.

“The manager decides which is the best for every single game.

“We win, lose and draw with and without Virgil and in this squad right now there are a lot of players that can play.

“We are used to some changes but we can’t use today this as an excuse.”

Pellegrino was asked whether things might actually be easier for Saints if van Dijk was just sold and replied: “We have to wait until January because now I can’t control the market and we will see what happens.”

He added: “He is part of our club and we know Virgil is an important player for us.

“We will see what happens in the future.”

City appear to be the front runners for van Dijk, and clearly have the money to pay £60m to sign him, but Pellegrino said: “I can’t control the whispers and the news from outside.

“It is difficult for me to decide what happens outside the club. It is difficult to control inside so imagine outside.
