Virgil van Dijk left out of Southampton squad as Manchester City near £60m deal

Show/hide article…

Manchester City are nearing a £60m deal to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk after the Dutchman was left out of the squad that travelled to London for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

The 26-year-old defender handed in a transfer request in the summer to try and force through a move to Liverpool, only for Saints to stand firm in the defiance against selling him and exile Van Dijk from the first team squad until the transfer window shut at the start of September.

Van Dijk has since returned to Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad and been a regular starter this season, but he was left out of the side that was named by the manager to take on Spurs and did not travel with the rest of the squad.

When asked why Van Dijk was not named in the squad, Pellegrino did not mention any injury and referenced the growing transfer speculation, before adding: “With Virgil, there is a lot of speculation, but we have to wait and see until January and then we can talk.”

Liverpool remain interested in signing Van Dijk given their continuing troubles in defence – having allowed a 2-0 lead evaporate at Arsenal last Friday to draw 3-3 – but it appears that City have steamed in ahead of the Reds in the hope of signing Van Dijk as the replacement for club captain Vincent Kompany, who Pep Guardiola feels cannot be relied upon anymore due to his persistent injury troubles.

With John Stones also sidelined with a hamstring injury, City manager Guardiola is keen to strengthen what is already the strongest defence in the Premier League, having conceded just 12 goals in 19 matches this season, and after putting off plans to bring in a new forward in Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez until the summer, he has made reinforcing City’s defence his priority.

Guardiola is currently relying on Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala at centre-back, with the Spaniard willing to sell the latter last summer had a team come on for the French defender that met City’s valuation so that they could sign West Bromwich Albion’s Jonny Evans – a deal that failed to go through before the summer transfer deadline.

Tottenham 5-2 Southampton: Pellegrino calls for Saints reaction

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has called on his players to give Saints fans the reaction they crave after seeing his team given a Boxing Day hammering at Wembley.

Saints were thrashed 5-2 by Tottenham, plunging them ever nearer the bottom three and with supporters starting to turn on the manager and members of the team.

There are just a few days for the squad to pull together ahead of a tough trip to face Manchester United at Old Trafford, and Pellegrino is desperate for a positive response.

He said: “The fans got the same feeling that we have.

“Everybody comes to the pitch to try to see this team giving everything and try to win points and win games but sometimes this is the game. The defeat and the bad moment is part of our life.

“People want to see the reaction, the spirit and aggression of the players fighting for every single ball until the end.

“We did this second half and we have to show this from the beginning and not just after the first and second goal.”

Pellegrino’s own position is starting to come under close scrutiny, with elements of the fanbase starting to turn on him.

“Hopefully yes,” he replied when asked if he can turn it around.

“I think difficult moments like today it’s important to know how people react and the people who can show character.

“Football is a game that the difficult situation you realise how is the people really in his character and which are the players that want to fight for the club 100 per cent.

“This type of situation helps me to draw this type of conclusion.”

Pellegrino went with a back four at Tottenham, a decision which drew much criticism, but defended himself.

“We can play also with three centre backs and full backs but I decide to play like this with Jack Stephens at right full back and Matt. Cedric and Ryan have different qualities and we prefer to put more people in the middle to play higher,” he said.

“Those players don’t need too many chances to convert.

Saints look increasingly like they are being sucked towards a relegation fight for the remainder of the season, and Pellegrino reckoned: “Last season between eighth and the last one six or seven points.

“The Premier League now is really tight and there are ten teams really close in five or six points.

“I know we are in a difficult situation but we need a couple of results to try to change the mood and show our best version on the pitch.”

While many of the headlines after the Tottenham game were reserved for the record breaking exploits of Harry Kane, there was a more worrying storyline for Saints.

“I think against this side we made a lot of mistakes that we cannot,” reflected Pellegrino.

“Obviously in the second half we react well, we create a couple of chances to be on the game but after the third one it was really difficult for us to bounce back and be in the game.

“At least we show another face.

“I know it’s difficult to digest five goas and this type of game up and down until the end but at least we show another reaction which we had to do from the beginning.

“Against those players you cannot play too easy like for example the first 30 minutes.”

He added: “I think that the early goal was a smash for our players.

“I think the second half I repeat we have had the Mario chances and Shane Long one v one to try and be on the game but we couldn’t.

“Also in the first possibility they scored the third one and it was really difficult for us to bounce back and our goals came a little bit late.”

Tottenham 5-2 Southampton: Spurs and Kane demolish Saints

Show/hide article…

Harry Kane smashed Alan Shearer’s Premier League record for goals scored in a calendar year by hitting a hat-trick in Tottenham’s 5-2 mauling of Saints.

Kane needed only one goal to pass the 36 scored by Shearer in 1995 but the Spurs striker banged in three at Wembley to finish 2017 on an astonishing 39 goals in 36 league matches.

Dele Alli and Son Heung-min helped put Southampton out of sight in the second half despite Sofiane Boufal pulling one back at 4-0 and substitute Dusan Tadic reducing the deficit late on.

But while five different scorers made for a frenetic, if undoubtedly one-sided contest, Kane was the star of the show from the moment he headed past Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster in the 22nd minute.

Shearer was quick to send his congratulations on Twitter, hailing his successor’s “magnificent 2017”, and it is noteworthy Kane has needed six fewer games to complete his tally than Shearer enjoyed 22 years ago. This was also Kane’s eighth hat-trick of the year, and sixth in the Premier League.

Away from Kane, there was also a match to be won and Mauricio Pochettino will be thrilled to have sustained recent momentum.

Tottenham have now won five out of their last six matches while Southampton are winless in seven and there were some sarcastic chants from the visiting fans here that will not have been lost on under-pressure manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Mousa Dembele and Danny Rose came in for Moussa Sissoko and Ben Davies while Pellegrino opted to replace the banned Charlie Austin with Shane Long, who remains without a goal since February. Virgil van Dijk was again absent from the Saints squad, with a January transfer now looking increasingly likely.

Tottenham’s early dominance did little to rouse a rather sleepy home crowd until Rose, with a large plaster strapped across his forehead, launched a barnstorming run down the left and won a foul on the edge of the box.

Christian Eriksen whipped in the free-kick and Kane, unchallenged by his marker Oriol Romeu, was allowed to nod home from point-blank range. He toasted his record by sliding to his knees in the corner.

The celebrations could have been short-lived when Rose almost lobbed Hugo Lloris with a header back to his goalkeeper but Lloris scrambled back to gather the ball off the post.

It seemed only a matter of time before Kane would be smiling again and when Son slid an inch-perfect pass across the box in the 39th minute, he had his second.

Southampton twice went close to pulling one back early in the second period as Long shot straight at Lloris after a wayward Jan Vertonghen pass and Mario Lemina clipped the crossbar with an effort from distance.

But Spurs’ complacency quickly wore off as Alli and Son added two more goals in as many minutes. Alli capitalised on some more lax Romeu defending to bend the ball inside Forster’s far post before then turning provider, supplying Son to finish off a ruthless counter-attack.

Kane almost had his third only to volley wide from an excellent cross-field Rose pass and Southampton pulled one back when Serge Aurier made a mess of a headed clearance and Boufal drilled past Lloris at the near post.

Nothing could stop Kane though. Another counter-attack stretched the Saints defence as Alli fed Kane, who nonchalantly dinked the ball over Forster for his hat-trick. Tadic added a late consolation but when the final whistle blew, there was only one man striding off with the match ball.

Southampton watch Jack Hendry as PL clubs circle around Celtic target

Show/hide article…

Southampton scouts watched Dundee defender Jack Hendry in action against Celtic on Boxing Day.

The 22-year-old has been widely expected to join Celtic in the January window but Premier League clubs have taken note of the stylish centre-back who has drawn comparisons with Manchester City’s John Stones.

Crystal Palace and Newcastle United have also watched Hendry who had a brief spell with Wigan Athletic prior to returning to Scotland, having started out at Partick.

Southampton want a centre back with City and Liverpool both willing to pay over £60million for Virgil van Dijk who was again left out of their starting line-up as they lost 5-2 to Tottenham at Wembley on Boxing Day.

Celtic were due to speak to Dundee about Hendry after the game but around 18 clubs were represented in the stands, many to watch the young centre back.

Hendry has been a first-team regular for Dundee this season, featuring in 25 games.

As well as impressing at the back, he has scored two goals.

Romeu: We understand the frustration

Show/hide article…

Goals from Harry Kane – who hit a hat-trick – Heung-Min Son and Dele Alli condemned Southampton to a 5-2 defeat on Tuesday in front of more than 3,000 travelling supporters at the national stadium.

The fans’ efforts certainly did not go unnoticed by Romeu, who was quick to thank those who made the journey to London on Boxing Day, and he called for more of the same going forwards in a difficult period.

“We understand the frustration of the fans but it happens in football,” he said. “ I have been here in a similar situation before and I know how it feels. We appreciate the support and what the fans keep doing for us and that is exactly what we need.

“We want to thank them and tell them that together we will be stronger and together we can get back to where we want to be.”

Juventus ready to up bid for Emre Can; Virgil Van Dijk set for record transfer

Show/hide article…

With the calendar soon turning over to the new year, the gossip ahead of the January transfer window is heating up. Transfer Talk brings you all the latest rumours.

Tuttosport is reporting that Marko Pjaca could be included in the deal to send Emre Can to Juventus.

The German is eyeing a bumper new contract and using his expiring deal at Anfield as leverage in negotiations with the Reds.

Yet an agreement has still to be reached, with the Old Lady strongly linked to the Bayern Munich product for some time should he opt to leave on a free transfer next summer. The Italian champions can officially approach the 23-year-old next month regarding a pre-contract agreement.

Given their weak negotiating position, the Reds’ best option could be to take a player back in return, with Croatian winger Pjaca likely to offer excellent cover out wide for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Southampton will sell Virgil van Dijk – but only for a massive £70 million to make the Netherlands international the most expensive defender of all time, reports the Mirror.

The 26-year-old was omitted from Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad once again as the Saints were thrashed 5-2 by Tottenham at Wembley, suggesting a sale next month is inevitable.

Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool are the front-runners and will face paying more than the £50m that Pep Guardiola was forced to pay Spurs for Kyle Walker.

City will gladly go to £60m, with the Telegraph claiming that the Blues are “closing in” on a deal. Liverpool have already had a £65m bid knocked back last summer amidst a war of words between the clubs that ultimately prevented any move transpiring.

Antonio Conte is eager to reunite with Arturo Vidal next summer, reports Chilean outlet La Cuarta, with Chelsea set to offer the Bayern star a bumper contract.

Vidal and Conte worked together successfully at Juventus, with the Italian insisting he would “go to war” with El Guerrero.

The report claims that the Blues will table a contract worth $18.5m (£13.5m) annually, or £260,000 per week.

Vidal’s current contract runs to 2019, meaning the Blues will hold the advantage over Bayern – who will be keen to recoup some money on the 30-year-old three years after his €40m move from Juventus – in negotiations.

Barcelona are making a big effort to sign Gremio star Arthur, with Sport now reporting that the 21-year-old has offers from other clubs, including Real Madrid.

The Brazilian help Gremio win the Copa Libertadores last month, leading to widespread interest from Europe’s biggest clubs.

Barca will send representatives to Brazil to hurry through a deal, hoping to triumph due to the player’s desire to wear the Blaugrana shirt over others, as he’s been pictured wearing the shirt this month.

  • It is beginning to look like a busy January for Barcelona as Ernesto Valverde shapes up his squad.

Aleix Vidal, fresh from scoring the third goal in the 3-0 win over Real Madrid, could be heading for the exit with Atletico Madrid and Valencia the latest clubs to show interest, according to Sport.

Sevilla, who appear to be the player’s preference after one year at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, are the favourites and could strike an agreement with the La Liga champions at £8.9m.

  • Barcelona’s forgotten man, Arda Turan, is close to joining Besiktas with Barcelona set to sign off his exit, reports Sport.

The Turkish media are claiming Turan will sign with the Black Eagles with his agent, Ahmet Bulut, set to meet officials from the club in the coming hours to find a compromise. The 30-year-old has not played a single minute for the Blaugrana this season under Valverde.

Liverpool ‘make offer for Van Dijk alternative’ to strengthen defence

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have made an offer for Lazio star Stefan De Vrij as they continue to search for an alternative target to Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds need to sure up their defence with Dejan Lovren persistently costing his team with mistakes.

Yet interest in Southampton star Van Dijk has brought bad publicity after being accused of tapping up the centre-back.

Tuttosport say Liverpool and Atletico Madrid have made concrete offers to De Vrij, while Juventus are also in the running.

It’s hard for Steven Gerrard to get away from his legendary status at Liverpool.

At his new workplace at Liverpool ’s Academy in Kirkby hangs a banner, proudly listing his games and goals, beside other famous youth products like Jamie Carragher .

But he just wants to be Steven Gerrard the coach when he is out on the training pitch working with his table-topping Under-18 squad.

Gerrard has consciously consigned the glorious playing chapter in his life to the past as he focuses on successfully writing the next one as a coach.

Trent Alexander-Arnold enjoyed his “dream” Anfield moment… even if manager Jurgen Klopp tried to turn it into a nightmare afterwards.

The teenage Liverpool sensation scored his first Premier League goal, and his first at the famous Kop End, all in front of his extended family who had flown in from America especially for this game.

“It’s a dream come true to score at Anfield, especially to win,” he said. “I’ve scored two goals away from home but it’s good to get one at Anfield, especially at the Kop.”

Yet after a vibrant performance against Swansea, Klopp revealed afterwards that despite hugging the young defender on the final whistle, he was actually taking him to task for earlier failing in defensive duties.
