Pellegrino on Spurs defeat

Show/hide article…

Sofiane Boufal and Dušan Tadić were on the scoresheet, but stealing the headlines was 24-year-old Harry Kane, whose eighth hat-trick of 2017 broke another string of Premier League records.

The Southampton manager noted the opposition’s attacking talent on display at Wembley today, after conceding five, and further asserted that his team will need to exercise ‘togetherness’ in order to overcome a difficult stretch of results.

“When we concede the third goal it was really difficult to come back,” the manager began. “I think we reacted well in the second half, to try to score goals and be in the game.

“Obviously our goals came late, but we pressed higher and tried to show what we are [capable of]. It was important to show some character in those moments.

“Sometimes the difficult moments are useful for seeing how people will react. Our profession and our life in football is made from these moments, the difficult times help the team to be together and be stronger. Hopefully we can bounce back from this moment.

“Against the top teams, you cannot make any mistakes, because they don’t make too many. Some amazing players today, a lot of quality up front, allowed them to score goals with few chances. It is the level of the Premier League.”

Pellegrino gives Austin update

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino fears that striker Charlie Austin is set to be sidelined for some weeks with a hamstring injury.

Austin was injured in the team’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town last Saturday, going off late on after scoring the opener – his fifth goal in five starts.

Pellegrino said the full extent of the problem isn’t known, but that the forward is likely to be out for a significant period.

“Charlie will be probably out for a long period of time,” said the manager. "It is a little bit more serious [than we first thought].

“But we have to wait and see what the doctors say, in the next few weeks.”

Austin was already ruled out of today’s match with Tottenham, as well as the visit to Manchester United and home game with Crystal Palace, after being charged by The FA with violent conduct in relation to an incident during the draw with Huddersfield.

Antonio Conte will be fuming if Virgil van Dijk signs for Liverpool or Man City - Thompson

Phil Thompson believes Antonio Conte will not be happy if Man City sign Virgil van Dijk

That is according to pundit Phil Thompson.

Southampton look certain to lose their star defender next month after rebuffing offers in the summer.

After being chased by Liverpool during the last window, Van Dijk is now attracting interest from a number of Premier League heavyweights.

Chelsea and Man City have been linked with the Dutchman in recent weeks.

Blues boss Conte recently pleaded with his managerial counterparts to stop Pep Guardiola signing van Dijk due to City’s huge lead at the top of the table.

Southampton boss Pellegrino opens up on Virgil van Dijk transfer

Show/hide article…

Southampton are resigned to selling Virgil van Dijk in January - but are demanding a staggering £70m world record fee.

Manchester City , Liverpool and Chelsea are all in for the Dutch defender who has been axed from the first team set-up while they carry out the transfer auction.

Premier League leaders City are confident of landing van Dijk but Liverpool believe they also have a genuine chance as the 26-year-old wanted to move to Anfield last summer and privately they think that is still the case.

City are ready to pay £60m while Liverpool had a £65m offer turned down last summer before backing off after being forced to publicly apologise for tapping him up.

But Mirror Sport understands that Southampton will hold out for a record fee bigger than the record £50m City paid for Kyle Walker in the summer and the fact three clubs are in for him will only strengthen the belief they can get £70m.

Arsenal were the other club interested in van Dijk last summer but the price this time is likely to scare them off from a player who was blocked from leaving in the summer and Southampton do not believe his attitude has been right in the past few weeks.

Van Dijk was not involved against Huddersfield on Saturday and did not even travel to Wembley for Southampton’s defeat to Tottenham and Mauricio Pellegrino opened the door to a January sale.

Saints boss Pellegrino said: “I have to decide what’s best for the team and around Virgil there has been a lot of speculation.

“The manager decides what is the best. We win, draw and lose, with and without Virgil. We have to wait until January. I can’t control the market so we’ll see what happens.”

Pellegrino insisted he had no regrets about keeping van Dijk in the summer even though the defender wanted to leave and has endured a bad first half of the campaign.

“We tried to do the best for the team. The board decided to try to keep our best player at the club. This situation is a big learning curve for everybody and now we decide what is the best for the club,” said Pellegrino.

Pellegrino also finds himself under mounting pressure at St Mary’s as the unhappy travelling fans chanted “You’re getting sacked in the morning.”

But Pellegrino insisted that he can turn the situation around even though he confessed Southampton now find themselves in a relegation scrap.

Pellegrino said: “The fans have the same feeling we have. People want to see a reaction, the spirit of aggression, fighting for every ball. We did in the second half but need to show from beginning.

“After a difficult moment like today, it’s important to know how people react. You can realise how people really are. Which are the players who want to fight 100 per cent for the club. It will help me draw a lot of conclusions.

“The Premier League is tight with ten teams more or less really close and we are in difficult situation. We need a couple of results to change the mood and show our best personality on the pitch.”

Mauricio Pellegrino insists he cannot control Virgil van Dijk exit rumours

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino refused to be drawn on the future of Virgil van Dijk after leaving the defender out of his squad for their 5-2 loss at Tottenham on Boxing Day.

The unsettled Netherlands international was omitted from the Saints matchday 18 for the second successive game, but Pellegrino insisted the decision was tactical.

However, the Argentine, who faced chants of ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ from sections of the sold-out away end during the match, claimed he did not know if Van Dijk will be leaving in January amid reported interest from Premier League leaders Manchester City.

“I decide that it’s the best for the team. I know that around Virgil there will be a lot of speculation but this is my decision,” Pellegrino said.

"It’s tactical reasons. The manager decides which is the best for every single game; we win, we draw, we lost with and without Virgil and in this squad right now I have a lot of players who can play.

"Now he’s part of our club and we know that Virgil is an important player for us, but we’ll see what happens in the future.

“I cannot control the whispers and the news from outside.”

As good as Spurs were offensively at Wembley, though, it was a poor performance from the visitors as their winless run stretched to seven top-flight matches.

Pellegrino, however, preferred to take the positives out of his team’s display, especially their second-half showing at the national stadium that saw them score twice.

“We reacted well in the second half when we were close to scoring the first goal to make it 2-1 and to be in the game,” he said.

"And then they scored the third goal and from this moment it was really, really hard to come back.

"But at least we showed another face, personality and character in the second half. But we also have to congratulate an opponent who were really precise in the chances they had.

"We saw strikers with a lot of quality and they do not need too many possibilities to score and we also made too many mistakes.

"But as a manager, I can draw a lot of conclusions from situations like this and realise how people react in difficult moments. And we can draw a lot of things from today.

"We used to be much better in defence, but today we could not in some moments, especially with this type of striker.

“We reacted well in the second half, pressed higher and were more aggressive, but our goals arrived too late.”

Southampton resigned to losing Virgil van Dijk in January after defender is left out of squad again

Show/hide article…

Southampton are resigned to selling Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window after he was once again left out of manager Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad.

Manchester City have moved ahead of Liverpool and Chelsea in the race to sign central defender Van Dijk, who Southampton still want £70million for.

But the Dutchman’s value has not been helped by the fact Pellegrino has now dropped him for Southampton’s last three games.

Having been an unused substitute against Chelsea, Van Dijk was omitted from the matchday squads for the draw with Huddersfield and the Boxing Day thrashing at Tottenham Hotspur.

With City preparing an opening bid of around £60m, Pellegrino said: “We have to wait until January. I can’t control the market, so we’ll see what happens.”

Jamie Redknapp and Thierry Henry joined David Jones to analyse the talking points from Tottenham’s 5-2 home win over Southampton on Boxing Day.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane scored a hat-trick at Wembley to help see off the Saints, taking the England international to 39 Premier League goals in 2017.

Kane’s treble meant he broke Alan Shearer’s 22-year-old record for most Premier League goals scored in a calendar year, which had previously stood at 36.

Kane’s hat-trick was his eighth in all competitions of 2017, with the Sky Sports pundits discussing the player’s record-breaking past 12 months for Spurs.

Jamie Redknapp ‘worried’ for ‘woeful’ Southampton after Tottenham defeat

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s “woeful” defensive display in their 5-2 loss to Tottenham on Boxing Day has left Jamie Redknapp concerned for their Premier League safety.

Defeat at Wembley not only stretched Southampton’s winless run to seven league matches, but also saw them slip to 14th in the table, just two points above the relegation zone.

Harry Kane was Southampton’s chief tormentor as he scored a hat-trick, but it was how Southampton defended Dele Alli’s strike four minutes into the second half that Redknapp felt summed up their poor performance.

“From Southampton’s point of view, show him [Alli] down the line, he’s right footed so do not let him come inside,” said the Sky Sports pundit.

"You see it so often now with players and that is lazy, rubbish defending if you ask me. If he goes on his right foot, he is going to smash it in from 20 yards. Show him down the line where there is going to be no danger.

"As soon as you let him come inside, he is going to shoot. It is too easy - look at [Maya] Yoshida turning his back.

"Now you are a team fighting for your lives, you have to do better than that. That is really woeful defending. You have been playing against him all game so you know that he is predominantly right footed.

“And I think that summed up Southampton today - not good enough.”

Redknapp believes that it is Southampton’s transfer strategy, though, that is finally catching up with them.

“Twenty goals now in the season, obviously Charlie Austin is out injured for a while with his hamstring,” he said.

"It worries me because what they have done is they were a team a few years ago that we applauded - it is great how they run their club, they manage to sell good players and keep getting better.

"But not now and that catches up with you. In the end, what we are seeing now is if you keep selling your best players and not buying better players, you are going to be in a mess.

“Now by the end of the day they could be a couple of points off the bottom three, a team lacking form and confidence.”

In particular, Redknapp thinks Southampton’s decision not to sell unsettled centre-back Virgil van Dijk last summer is now looking like a mistake.

“It looked like a good decision to maybe keep Van Dijk, but they should have sold him in the summer,” he said. "He does not want to be there, get the money in and go and reinvest.

“The way that they have done it so far over the years has worked, [Sadio] Mane, [Victor] Wanyama, and [Adam] Lallana. All these good players, you keep selling them and not bringing in better players, it is a recipe for disaster.”

Meanwhile, fellow Sky Sports pundit Thierry Henry has laid the blame for the Saints’ current malaise at their decision to part company with previous manager Claude Puel at the end of last season.

“Right now, too good or not too good, it does not really matter, you are where you are so that means you are not doing extremely well,” Henry said.

"But I will go back to the managers they had, they had [Ronald] Koeman, [Mauricio] Pochettino and Claude Puel.

"And I know we are going back to the same story every time. But I thought they had a good manager with Claude Puel. Yes, they nearly won the League Cup, they finished eighth - what else do you want?

“You had a good manager and I am not having a go at Mauricio Pellegrino because he is a good manager and did a good job with Alaves, but you had a good manager and you let him go.”

Things you missed: West Ham’s kit men misspell Marko Arnautovic’s name

Show/hide article…

An action-packed Boxing Day of Premier League football saw Jesse Lingard score twice to salvage a point for Manchester United against Burnley while Harry Kane netted another hat-trick to become the highest goalscorer around the world in 2017.

Callum Wilson was the hero for Bournemouth against West Ham and Philippe Coutinho scored another trademark wonder goal as Liverpool eased past Swansea.

But that was just the half of it on a busy day across the country. Sportsmail have listed some things you may have missed among the mayhem…

In recent weeks Marko Arnautovic has been the name on every West Ham fan’s lips with crucial goals against Chelsea, Newcastle, Stoke and Bournemouth.

However, it seems the club’s kit men have still not got to grips with how to spell the Austrian forward’s name as he was sent out against Bournemouth with the name ‘Arnoutovic’ on his back.

The issue of the high boot in football has been a topic of conversation this season after Sadio Mane was, wrongly or rightly, sent off for Liverpool against Manchester City after a dangerous collision with Ederson.

Once again supporters will be bemoaning the consistency of Premier League referees though as Robert Madley somehow didn’t give Bournemouth’s Simon Francis his marching orders against West Ham.

The defender wildly kicked Cheikhou Kouyate in the face during the first half but was fortunate enough to only be given a yellow.

It took 46 minutes for Chelsea to open the scoring at home to Brighton but when they eventually found a way past Mathew Ryan, it was a goal truly made in Spain.

As Cesar Azpilicueta crossed for Alvaro Morata to head home, it was the sixth time the duo had combined for a Premier League goal this season.

That equalled the joint-most for one Chelsea player to another in a single season, pulling level with Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa in 2014-15 and Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba in 2009-10.

Christmas, among other things, is a time for sharing and no team are dividing their goals up quite like Watford at the moment.

Molla Wague’s equaliser against Leicester means The Hornets have now had more different goalscorers in the Premier League than any other side this season with 13.

Abdoulaye Doucoure, Richarlison, Etienne Capoue, Troy Deeney, Andre Gray, Will Hughes, Daryl Janmaat, Christian Kabasele, Miguel Britos, Tom Cleverley, Stefano Okaka and Roberto Pereyra have also found the back of the net.

A sublime performance from Tom Heaton saw Burnley earn a point against Manchester United at Old Trafford last season while Sean Dyche’s men walked away from the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ with another draw on Boxing Day.

Jesse Lingard came off the bench to score twice in the second half following earlier strikes from Ashley Barnes and Steven Defour.

Those two goals saw Burnley become only the second different team to have scored more than once in a game against Jose Mourinho’s Man Utd at Old Trafford after Man City.

The left-back’s future at Spurs seems to have been in doubt for quite a while now but Rose looked committed to Tottenham once again on Tuesday.

Rose’s discontent has been rumbling along since pre-season when the England defender demanded that the club buy more world class players to compete with Europe’s elite and revealed that he would consider leaving if an offer from a bigger club came in.

But it seems all may be forgotten as in Harry Kane’s post-match celebratory picture, Rose can be seen pointing to the Spurs badge.

Tottenham decimated Southampton 5-2 at Wembley but Rose was forced to wear a large plaster across his forehead during the game after suffering an injury during training.

Philippe Coutinho scored his 19th Premier League goal from outside the box to put Liverpool 1-0 ahead against Swansea at Anfield.

He took one touch before firing past the helpless Lukasz Fabianski inside the opening 10 minutes.

In doing so, the Brazilian now has one more goal than Robbie Fowler from outside the box and is second only to Steven Gerrard, who has 33, among Liverpool players.

Arguably the biggest shock when looking down the Swansea team sheet was the inclusion of young striker Oliver McBurnie from the start.

However, the 21-year-old appeared to choose to not wear shinpads on his full debut. This though is against the laws of the game with shinguards part of football’s compulsory equipment.

Perhaps he looked at Liverpool’s fragile defence and sensed no danger to his shins.

Riyad Mahrez temporarily gave Leicester fans hope of three points on Boxing Day when he opened the scoring at Watford with a header.

In doing so he continued his excellent recent away form against The Hornets and has now scored in all three of his Premier League games at Vicarage Road.

The Algerian also notched in Hertfordshire in both March and November 2016.

Despite their team’s rather subdued performance at The Hawthorns, Everton fans will have been delighted to see winger Yannick Bolasie return to first-team action.

It was his first appearance in more than 12 months after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury which required two operations.

Bolasie lasted until just after the hour mark before he was substituted and Sam Allardyce will be hoping his return can inject some much needed flair into his attack.

Among the Premier League’s Brazilian contingent we have seen the look away finish a number of times season.

The sight of it oozes coolness and composure in front of goal and Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino added insult to injury when he looked away before stroking in his side’s fourth goal against Swansea.

Firmino also pulled out the trick against Sevilla in the Champions League while Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus has also done it.
